3:00 pm
from phones to french. t.v. dot com. this is all to you live here in the russian capital of breaking news tonight up to thirty five people killed by a terrorist explosion of moscow's domodedovo airport the busiest in the country. around one hundred thirty of those were injured by the blast in the international arrivals hall the security area often filled with members and taxi driver forty people are said to be in a critical condition to british citizens and thought to be among those we suspect
3:01 pm
a suicide bomber is to blame but don't know yet whether it was a man or woman or what nationality. investigators are studying c.c.t.v. footage the moment of the explosion was caught on camera russian president richard there's a lot of extra security. stations to be increased to continue and take off. well now let's get the latest. tell us what's happening at the airport just. to this is affected suicide bomber struck. well bill at this point of course the security measures are still way out there is a police presence all over the place literally hundreds and hundreds of police officers and the security officers from federal security service are also on hand we out we have seen sniffer dogs obviously they were still investigators were still looking whether or not there could be any explosives left over in that building at
3:02 pm
this point it has been at this point they say that it rather say there is no sense of that if that is the first thing that we noticed don't we arrive at the airport of course there's a lot of tension in the areas you can imagine but people were rather operating in a rather orderly fashion and there it i have to mention of their. entrance to the airport where usually there were not but a business point. but we started checking everything that's coming in there looking . all the bags right at the entrance to the airport at anything that looks like a model or a blow dryer or anything go in between is also being looked at in that see that people are opening their bags right there in the entrance so as i have said the security measures are unprecedented at this point we also saw. dozens up emergency vehicles. ambulances police fire all of them were on hand a lot of them have left at this point but still
3:03 pm
a rather significant number is left still by naturally there is still a lot of tension being present there is still a lot of the investigation is still going on so naturally that has to be kept in check and we also spoke to some of the witnesses of course that there were also psychological. members of isaac logical help teams from the minister for emergencies present on the hand to help those who have seen or witnessed the explosions that happened earlier today of course because it's not something people will forget anytime soon. and of course that we also spoke to some witnesses and this is what they told us. someone detonated a hidden explosive device it was either in luggage or a suicide belt or so the blast a suitcase was on fire and a person had his back to me so the explosive device was either on this person though in the suitcase i don't know what he looked like he was dressed in black and
3:04 pm
standing with his back to me blustery me three meters back when i stood up everyone was running towards the exit panicking there was a lot of black smoke and the lights went out i went for a medical check up at first i thought i had a wound on my head but it turned out i just had someone else's blood on me. you can't see anything at the scene of the blast it's all kind you don't and the investigators are working there you can't see anything there's a distinctive smell in the air. force the investigators are still. they're exploring all possibilities trying to figure out exactly what happened here it's core thirty in the afternoon when the blast struck let's have a listen to what the investigators have to say. the police. at the scene the explosion took place in the international arrivals who. is suspected of carrying out the attack. and we also know that a serb in it and italian the differential national dollar i'm only going to then
3:05 pm
isn't mentioned to britain's time are up or now is pronounced it dead but dad naturally there are some people who were here we also spoke to them police said that they believe they were told they'd start the number of casualties will be a lot higher of course it is enormous at this point this is a very tragic event but we spoke to one woman who was working at a cafe and she said that she saw with her own eyes people being carried out of the international arrivals area with their limbs were not covered in blood people with the remnants of body body is all in their clothes so course the scene that was here earlier today is truly horrific but at this point at things at the airport seem to be quieting down as i have steadily lot of really merchants to be cause are leaving a however the entering the international arrivals area where people used to be able to approach it rather closely in that area right now is coordinate all it's only open to those who are coming into the airport why arriving at those who are here to
3:06 pm
meet and greets people passed away from them in the departures area so basically there is a very large area on the airport that has been closed off to pretty much everybody but the investigators and those who have to pass through it as they're arriving having said that i also have to mention that planes are coming in and going on schedule flights have been canceled but a lot of them are departing and arriving so the airport is operating to the fullest capacity that they could possibly. operate in these extenuating circumstances bill just briefly could you give us an idea of the geography here because. suspected that the bomb went off in the baggage reclaim area but no it's suspected that it was actually in an area very close to the baggage reclaim area where people wait for passengers to come through security area and that's pretty close to what you all know is. that imagine that that it could be one of the one of the girl even leery ideas for the investigators because like i said that area before
3:07 pm
was very open to people a lot of people could come in there pretty much anybody and there were not not particular security checks in that area so. they actually eye witnesses were saying that somebody heard a rumor that they have seen a man throw a bag in that very area in the in the in the meeting and greeting area so we have got to wait for the investigators bring their official. their official verdict in this case. also just finally we've always had reaction from the president. has she actually being to the side i mean this is obviously a very important situation for him to address because he hasn't been long in the post has he. got that is absolutely right we have not seen the mayor with our own eyes but we did see a lot of official looking vehicles coming in just when we were arriving as well and that is when the mayor was supposed to come in here as well so if he did i arrive i
3:08 pm
would imagine that maybe at this point he is not meeting with the press not saying anything because obviously the mayor will have to discuss a lot of things with the investigative committee we did see members of the investigative committees as they were coming out of the international arrivals area by the way and they were heading into a secluded area in the airport and i imagine they're still working there because we have not seen a lot of official vehicles leaving songs thinking that at this point it's safe to speculate that in this building behind me there is a lot of work going on a lot of investigate. in a lot of thinking because they're trying to piece all that all the pieces of the puzzle together in order to figure out what exactly has transpired here just several hours ago. and in are going to go thanks very much indeed for that live update from the domodedovo airport there in moscow when at least sixty people have been taken to hospitals across the russian capital so far we understand that thirty five have been killed including two britons many of those people have been taken to hospital in critical condition has been obvious outside one of those hospitals
3:09 pm
joins me now you know what do we know about those who are hospitalized. but we know that around half of those people sent to hospitals across the city are in critical condition they've not only been sent to hospitals in moscow but also in clinics two clinics in the moscow region according to the authorities they may be sent to a federal medical centers in order to provide proper medical assistance now also another factor which became a problem for might have become a problem for medical assistance was the fact that this blast happened at four thirty pm and this is the time when of the evening traffic jam stores in moscow well police escorted more stock ambulances through the traffic jam to get the injured to proper medical assistance on time. there are various injuries but most
3:10 pm
of them were caused by shrapnel i believe from this explosive device which went off in the my dear the airport besides giving physical medical systems assistance also psychological help is being given both to the to the survivors of this attack and to their relatives and to everybody who is in need of it because quite a lot of people were effected by this blast not only those who were in the area of the explosion but according to the. dozens of reports from eyewitnesses. almost everybody who was at. airport in the terminal at that time felt that explosion on people on the totally different end of the building. on different floors as well hotlines have also been. psychological help and. transfer have been as well. just how well have the emergency services cope do you
3:11 pm
think of the condition bearing in mind of course this was at four thirty in the afternoon and russia was well on the way and obviously airport is quite a way out from the city center. while the conditions were quite difficult the traffic jam i just told you about the time all of this happened but judging by the reports from the eyewitnesses for now which are now flooding the internet and other mass media here in russia everything everything was done quite quickly the ambulances team to the to the airport quite quickly there was no panic after the explosion and still psychologists are still working at the airport as well just in case somebody is in need of help and also trains which take people. passengers to the airport to be are now working for free to be able to transfer
3:12 pm
back in just to and from the airport so quite a lot is being done is this police which is supporting us this is supported the ambulances a lot was done in order to provide assistance to those affected and especially there were also foreign citizens who are affected by this attack the two british citizens there also now. the. french embassy is also checking the. reports that its citizens were injured. in this attack a lot of effort was put into helping absolutely everybody who were affected because this was definitely a shock definitely unexpected and scary well meaning people ok we'll leave it there you going to skin off thanks very much for the moment more from you no doubt we get more news more developments this incident thank you well the president held an emergency meeting to discuss the response to the blast and he's also delayed his
3:13 pm
trip to the world economic forum in the swiss city of davos where he was planning to make a key speech well earlier i spoke to tom about the government's response. the president. as you said canceled his delayed his trip to the the divorce economic forum where he was going to be a keynote speaker and he also recently had this meeting with the prosecutor general the investigative committee and also the russian transport ministry where they outlined really their immediate priorities the immediate priorities that he highlighted. first of all to get on to the people who who are behind this attack he planned it in his words to be hot on their heels also really to provide immediate assistance to the people on the ground medical and psychological help if you don't if the people hospital oversee medical help if they weren't actually wounded
3:14 pm
physically that then also need psychological counseling if they're traumatized from this bombing also he extended his condolences to those people affected by the attack the russian prime minister vladimir putin also spoke to the health minister saying that those people will be will get compensation and recommending the health minister visit them in person the president earlier spoke after this meeting and more just to hear some of the things he had to say there. that. the explosion in domodedovo took people's lives are spoken to the health minister and the emergencies minister those injured in the explosion will receive all necessary aid i express my condolences to the families of those killed extra security will be put in place in all airports roadways stations and transport hubs a special investigation group will be set up to look into the incident we need to
3:15 pm
look at what's happened in the immediate aftermath and for security on transport we've recently approved a number of laws on that we need to check that those laws are working because what happened shows not all of those rulings are being properly apply. side we have to look into about the most important thing at the moment is to support the victims and their families. the laws to which president medvedev are referring is referring there are laws passed after last year's march metro bombings and the earlier bombing of the netsky express train on its way to some petersburg in both cases extra laws were added to russia's antiterrorism legislation but as he said those laws are either not being adhered to properly or are in need of some adjustment and they'll have to be scrutinized to see how they actually work in practice also of note was the fact that the moscow's mayor and also the regional governor of the moscow region made
3:16 pm
a very swift public response to go to the scenes the hospitals and the airport to show leadership on the ground and to be at the center of the decision making process so as the president said in the in his in his address really. it's a matter of public transport safety public transport hubs have had security massively stepped up especially the other airports but also here in the center of moscow i'm pretty close to the kremlin now in the head of the federal security service there's visibly heightened police presence on the streets here it is reminiscent of the increased police presence after the moscow metro bombings which only happened under under a year ago and so the atmosphere of what it be vigilance really a lot of increased vigilance now from the security services. reporting there from central moscow well earlier i spoke to buddies from the institute of globalization
3:17 pm
and social movements who says the way airports are organized gives terrorists a good opportunity to strike. they way airports all denies it is actually increasing the risk of terrorist attacks not diminishing it because their way of forego the control of the crowd of the airports is done it's creating bottlenecks it's creating tough crowds of people which are very very easy targets for terrorist attacks and it's really impressive that nothing happened like that so far were the world or in russia because i think that they are opposed to cure it is not about providing safety and security of the passengers so far all terrorist attacks were targeted at working class people who would target or those people traveling by metro and they were targeted at people who are not really important for the first time you know have an attack which was targeted at people whose closs level was kind of a bit higher middle class maybe another middle class people and that is the absolutely
3:18 pm
new to russian terrorism. or is there will you know spoke to. the security measures taken in most cases second busiest airport. taking going through the check in and having your luggage checked just taking a lot longer now as a measure to be instead you've also seen the troll stuff around the airport grounds with dogs so it is natures we can see we've spoken to the security staff and they said that they've got the highest security level in place now all this stuff are on high alert they've been extra vigilant checking the luggage and they've got people monitoring the c.c.t.v. extremely closely doesn't this the monitor usually anyway that the money is actually placed with the threat and the attack has happened it on the data and i will be speaking to people on the ground in the airport trying to get a feel there's certainly no panic at the moment but people who are traveling today extremely anxious about what's happening i wanting to know as much information as
3:19 pm
possible especially about their safety in the services. will be in part where we understand the despite of planes still leaving and arriving you don't do that there are indeed planes being diverted to show it to be a search what's the impact there or they'd be overcoat without extra capacity. but we had a chair much of that today saying that they were ready to take the extra flights are going to be diverted from the other day divert you know is actually speaking to share much of this press service just a little while ago bill what they told us was that actually there weren't that many flights diverted to share much of those about a thirty minute gap when flights were restricted from coming into domodedovo airport and that's actually now according to show that the president has been listed to the flights returning to normal at the dead of here they said that was they were some sneaky for airport ever see some of these diverted flights as well as st petersburg airports and initial enough course to the people who were
3:20 pm
expecting to land in most kates a day now landing quite far out of that city and they'll be looking not to face a least a four hour train ride they've of course got the hirelings this crew some destruction chair much as he. ready to take on the extra capacity the extra people if necessary but what we're hearing at the moment is a looks like they stifle defies perhaps would be necessary and he will. tell us so what's the atmosphere is amongst the passengers there because clearly the capital is in a state of alert can you sense any nervousness tension there or are almost people like we saw over a year ago after the most metro bombings getting on with life as usual what is the situation there the feeling of this fear. look people are understandably nervous and anxious when they hear this nice they actually stuff on the ground have done a really great job every assuring people as best they can and keeping them as who phoned to say possibly kind of what's going on so we actually think that some of
3:21 pm
the people in the airport some of them knew what was happening some of them were just finding out as we were talking to the so we can hear some of their reactions now. you know the most important thing is people safety i'm a little scared but there's nothing i can do have to go in there there's no other way home. you know. what happened when we have been i really want to know what happened and they want to talk to my parents now because i think they're . hurt i don't they keep going to change. coming to school. i was supposed to fly from should i meet you but now i'm leaving from domodedovo airport i'm not scared here and i don't have any other troops there what has been interesting to know in the comparison is welty the bombing last year is a real resilience of people they're not going to be terrorized by these people by these attacks are they getting on with things as best as they can as he said the
3:22 pm
stuff that we try to keep things running as effectively and smoothly and emphasizing that their main priority at the moment is continuing to ensure that they put every machine in place to ensure the safety of the passages coming in and out of these airports. first reporting there were dennis summit a london based expert on terrorism and conflict resolution told me earlier that there are similarities between this attack and others carried out by terrorists from russia's restive north caucasus well obviously the first impression is that this is. similar to others that have taken place in moscow in recent years and the all indications are that this is part of the insurgency going on in the north caucasus so unless we hear evidence of. other suspects i think it's natural to suspect that it's people from the involved in the insurgency the north caucasus that are behind it we must keep in mind. the insurgency in the north
3:23 pm
caucuses. now has connections with other terrorist groups in the middle east and in other parts of the world so we are probably seeing. another. yet another attack against innocent civilians on the same pattern as happened in new york in london and paris and in other parts of the world. of course the insurgency in the north caucuses has domestic routes and. there are courses for it that are local but in the end this is in my view a part of much wider international threat to. peace loving people everywhere in the world where police are currently working to identify the suspected suicide bomber behind monday's attack the security has been tightened across the capital here russia's antiterrorism committee says the
3:24 pm
situation at the airport and across moscow is under control. but of the proportion if you can or as soon as we received information about the explosion police officers federal security experts and emergency teams went to the airport we're taking every measure to prevent any such incidents in other public places in accordance with the presidential order we've tightened security at all transportation hubs in moscow we are considering various motives but the most likely one is an act of terror the national antiterrorism committee has already asked the public for any information about the incident the situation at the airport and across the capital is under control this is of course a very grave incident and it shows that society should mobilize to fight against terrorism. the thought of well many passengers traveling out to domodedovo airport to use the airport express train which travel from. station here in central moscow and artie's the france now reports from that. well it's been a lot of shock and
3:25 pm
a lot of dismay some people were and many people were scattered about the airport when it happened some people thought it was construction work they had no idea bob had actually got off and gone off there was dust falling from the ceiling isn't it seemed a bit odd to them but they had no idea just how how abnormal the situation actually was a lot of people said they didn't actually see or hear anything but they smelled a lot of heavy smoke and got on the train out of the airport as soon as possible this train is about forty kilometers away i'm sorry the distance is about forty kilometers away from the airport to get into this station so it does offer them a very quick ride it lauzon to avoid traffic so a lot of passengers were talking with each other about their experiences on the train before it before they got here and their passports were checked by security a lot of people were warned before their planes landed what was going to be
3:26 pm
happening at the airport and they were very worried that maybe people were there waiting for them that family members had been waiting for them and something had happened and they there was no way to confirm that until they landed at more taxing and could get on their phones and confirm that so those were some very nerve wracking times others. actually hadn't taken off we're we're we're about to get on their airplanes when news came that had been bombed and had to get on the phone with loved ones who are going to be waiting for them to avoid the problem so there's a lot of anxiety here trains are still stopping by here at the station and letting people off and so everyone sort of settling down but these first couple of hours have there's just been a lot of shock and a lot of dismay over what's happened. lizzie front's reporting there well there's been international condemnation to this attack from the u.s. germany and france among others well let's get more now from marty's going to
3:27 pm
church can she is in washington gonna tell us what kind of reaction have we been hearing from around the world. well first of all just just now the u.n. security council has condemned this this terrible act of terrorism president obama has earlier also condemned the blast and he called it an outrageous act of terrorism i guess the russian people he also expressed condolences to the families of the victims press secretary robert gates has earlier read out the president's message take a listen. i strongly condemn this outrageous act of terrorism against the russian people at the dome and yet of the airport i want to express the solidarity of the american people with the russian people in the aftermath of this premeditated attack against innocent civilians michelle and i offer our deepest condolences to the russian people who have suffered greatly the hands of terrorism. we share your sorrow in
3:28 pm
the result. in our common fight against. terrorism for their political. thoughts are with the families of the victims and we are praying for a successful recovery. many of the world leaders have done the same they expressed their their solidarity we have a statement from nato secretary general who said he was shocked by this attack he says terrorism is a common thread in the international community has to fight it together all of the looters are actually saying that and this really was an act of the international terrorism if you think about it they attacked the busiest airport in russia the terrorists clearly knew that not only russian nationals are going to suffer more of what we're getting reports about french italian nationals caught up in this tragic attack this could suggest that terri's don't really care about nationality what's really shocking to most here is this blast in context of the previous ones russia
3:29 pm
has suffered from a succession of horrendous terrorist attacks over the last year and a how they were the moscow suicide bombings last march there was the attack on the passenger train a little bit over a year ago so russia is falling victim to terrorism on a regular basis and only recently has the united states and the west in general started to sort of knowledge that this is part of your national carrier is not just russia is the mistake issues and problems russia's been saying for years that there has to be a global effort to fight it is not solely washes responsibility although russia is in in many ways much more vulnerable to terrorism than other western states going to what about the security aspect here one expert saying especially about the fact the it it is a major international hub. well both security experts point out that those. thugs could be staging the attacks the raise funds from internet.
