ffs. thirty five people have been killed and almost two hundred one that in a blast at a moscow airport it was the largest terror attack in the russian capital since this metro was bombed last march. hospitals across the capital have taken at around one hundred i'll be injured with almost half of them in a critical condition. investigators believe the attack was most likely a suicide bombing and experts say international terrorists are involved making it more than an internal issue.
12:01 am
it was an r.t. coming to life from moscow and thirty five people have been killed in the round one hundred eighty injured after a suspected suicide bomber struck at russia's domodedovo airport the country's busiest air hop the terror attack which took place in the international arrivals area as russia's worst since twin bombings rocked moscow's metro last march around a hundred people have been taken to hospitals across the capital well we can now cross live to our correspondent lindsey france and sara furthur of following the story for us here outside moscow and first let's go to say our russian airports have imposed enhanced security measures after the blast an international flights have been diverted as we know or delayed so tell us what's the situation there now what's going on there how's a functioning at the moment. well the heavily increased security presence here today as you'd expect despite this the airport is operational now we know that when
12:02 am
you enter the airport at the name and you have a security check as soon as they stools there's a lot of security stuff that metal detectors that you have to gate through and you can see the increased presence. oh security stuff on the ground that we saw this not just a dog but all the major transportation hubs stepping up the security in this way immediately after the explosion happened at full thirty pm yesterday at the international arrivals hall. know the airport security cameras catch it face pictures of the explosion we saw some quite harrowing images as the bodies on the ground in the dense like from not blasting we can head out to the eyewitnesses. nice of people covered in blood with injured limbs and the ones their faces were covered with blood to someone conscious there was a feeling that something something heavy fell down there is a construction site there so we saw the workers drop something heavy but people from the second floor say that they felt
12:03 am
a shake the door and. who were leaving the airport when we had the explosion when we were leaving the luggage claim area there was something in the air and there was smoke our friends were calling us saying that there was an explosion and there were victims the bomb was not in the baggage area but tried behind the doors in the crowd of people welcoming us in the airport principally going to be able to move we heard in the. huge commotion started immediately the scene was quickly secure the police were everywhere. and offering them first. we just sort of shook his head you. know colonel case has been lowered should leave first the day she is underway we know that they had to investigate the investigative committee was briefed last night and had the preliminary findings from the investigators now we know that they've got a number of theories the main one pig that this was very like carried out by
12:04 am
a suicide bomber we come from some sources it's perhaps to us to give that as a definite. the other day we actually. police are now looking for a number of other suspects in connection to this attack is the possibly the suicide bomb was dropped off in the parking area hit by the arrival i was unable to put it in an area where there are no method to take notes another thing we know that investigators are looking at is the security stuff roll in this that they've taken the safety regulation documentation from the airport they'll be examining that very closely they will say going to be examining all the c.c.t.v. footage to try to establish exactly what happened. is that this explosion occurred at the arrivals cry yes there are about thirty flights landing fifteen at the international so you would see this attack agency has maximum damage it. will see that. a one hundred eighty people injured many if they are being treated at
12:05 am
hospitals that. are in tears about the situation in around the airport at the moment. it was her first is the moment let's now go to lindsey friend who is outside one of the moscow hospitals and as we know almost a hundred people have been taken to hospitals so what do we know about those victims those people who are treated in hospitals at the moment what's the condition tell us more. well right now there are thirty eight people listed as in critical condition is very touch and go it's less than twenty four hours since the attack so there's a physical condition is extremely sensitive at this point the victims were brought to area hospitals. from the airport last night after the bombing and spread out among a number of different hospitals in the area you can go to these hospitals and donate blood if you choose now preliminary reports show that forty eight of these
12:06 am
people were from moscow and or are from moscow thirty one are from other cities in russia and eight are foreigners so far that list contains people from italy france england moldova stand and serbia so right now like i said there are thirty eight in critical condition doctors are working around the clock to keep them with us and yesterday president medvedev met with russia's health minister and asked her and her deputies to go to all of these locations where the people are being kept in hospital to check and make sure that everything is being done there are more than enough medicine and more than enough blood and that every measure is being taken to help them and to help their families there will also be money given to the deceased families the families of the deceased involved in this attack one million rubles for families of the deceased two hundred thousand roubles for the. families
12:07 am
of the of the injured at this point the priority is to get these families to moscow to to their loved ones as soon as possible and make sure that is taking care of two people together now these numbers of injured could very easily change throughout the day as it goes on as i said it has been less than twenty four hours since this attack and with thirty eight in critical condition we could see those numbers change. or at least and thanks very much indeed for the sun. well let's now go back to sara who is outside of the airport sara tell us more about the reaction from the russian government. but what we saw yesterday was a very quick very strong response president would face paint his economic core than . to really address this issue you know what we have with he was saying first and foremost obviously with the families and friends and old days who were involved in the. state of the pipe take the bull because in his words they're going to be false
12:08 am
and the hills as we said we still with it in accordance with presidential security we. know just the date of the will the day to chance would take we've heard that he's going to be looking for a place to live at the antiterrorism these people stood up to the attacks of the netsky expressed but. that happened less than a year ago and these that these were added to these talks and what we've heard now is that these are very now going to be scrutinized let's look at how they work in practice if there's anything that can be done to prevent situations like this from occurring again. brushes busiest air hub rocked by an explosion chaos blood smoke and death in the international arrival section. someone detonated an explosive device it was either in luggage or a suicide. blast a suitcase was on fire and a person has parked to meet the explosive devices are the only person zero in the

suitcase i don't know what she looked like he was dressed in black and standing with his back to me glossary me three meters back and i stood up everyone was running towards the exit panicking there was a lot of black smoke and the lights went out i went for medical checkup at first i thought i had a wound on my head but it turned out i just had someone else's blood on me i mean when you see you can't see anything at the scene of the last it's all kind. and the investigators are working you can't see anything there's a distinctive smell in the air which is you know the blast wave was very strong we were quite far from the explosion but even there we could feel the blast wave ears had we felt a strong blow. doesn't it have a quickly swarming with police officers special security forces and paramedics investigation almost immediately focusing on one theory. the police are investigating at the scene of the explosion took place in the international

arrivals hall the suicide bomber suspected of carrying out the attack. initially authorities discussed a total evacuation of the airport but that one did have a continued business as usual there with some noticeable changes with the unprecedented security measures now in place of the domodedovo airport everybody who is meeting and greeting those wire arriving is forced to stand right here behind me and this is the departures lounge in fact the security measures are so strict that we were actually told twice to leave and not to film those looking to get out of them or dead of a were offered free travel on the rail shuttle between the airport and central moscow some good samaritans even driving stricken passengers home for free the tragedy resonated throughout the world with condolences pouring in from london paris warsaw and washington many observers say this latest attack on russia has far

reaching implications the growing islamism is a global phenomenon but the terrorism is usually caused by even splinter groups of then the islamist. movement and those are usually pretty local with local causes for instance al qaeda attacks the united states for its foreign policy that sort of thing so it's seems like a global movement but it's really not that coordinated various groups attack various countries for various reasons and it's usually local but while world leaders are left to ponder the ramifications of the latest deadly attack on russia most russians have not allowed terrorism to ground their plans coming and going as they were before the blast in a ghost court t.v. mosco. and the un security council on leaders from many countries including spain the u.k. and the u.s. have can damn the terror attack and offer their condolences and help in fighting terrorism art is guided to count as more from washington on the international reaction to the tragedy the u.s.

security council has condemned the blast president obama has done the same he called it an outrageous act of terrorism against the russian people he also expressed condolences to the families of the victims words of sympathy and solidarity were coming from all over the world this monday here is just some of the reaction we're getting to this tragedy at the washington airport to members of the security council can then in the strongest terms that there is to tack that the curate at them of that of international airport must go russian federation on january twenty fourth two thousand and eleven causing the numerous deaths and the injuries. they express their deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of this scheme is an act of terrorism and to their families and to the people and government of the russian federation i strongly condemn this outrageous act of terrorism against the russian people at the dome again of the airport i want to express the solidarity of the american people with the russian people in the

aftermath of this premeditated attack against innocent civilians michelle and i offer our deepest condolences to the russian people who have suffered greatly at the hands of tears. we share your sorrow in the resolve to stand with you in our common fight against terrorism for their political. thoughts are with the families of the victims and we are praying for a successful recovery. also we know that the u.n. security council is going to start their session on tuesday with a minute of silence in memory of the victims we also have a statement from nato secretary-general who said he was shocked by this attack he says terrorism is a common threat and the international community has to fight it together and this really was an act of international terrorism if you think about it they attacked the busiest international airport in washington the terrorists clearly knew that not only washington nationals are going to suffer moreover we're getting reports
12:14 am
about french italian nationals caught up in this tragic attack this could suggest a terrorist don't really care about nationality well what's really shocking to most here is this blast in context of the previous was russia has suffered from a succession of horrendous terrorist attacks over the last year and a health there were the moscow metro suicide bombings last march there was the attack on the passenger train a little bit over a year ago and only recently has the united states and the west the general started to sort of acknowledged that this is part of international terrorism and not just russia as the mass they gave shoes security experts point out that these monsters could actually be staging the attacks to raise funds from international terrorist networks you know to sort of children they can pull this off now everybody's talking about terrorism as a common threat that the international community has to fight fight it together and so on and so forth but the rat awake hasn't always been like this for
12:15 am
a long time the west would see the terrible things that terrorists had done in russia as part of some separatist movement as they would call it but now it's very much clear to everyone that these things are in threat to the whole of the international community and that their actions cannot be justified by anything but again it took the west a while to realize that. now on reporting their security analyst fred burton explains why airports are an obvious target for terrorists if you look at the nature of the airports in general they're a very logical target set especially in light of the transportation sector and the ongoing threats directed towards them if you think about it in context as you arrive at an airport you're cute before you get into any kind of screening environment. it looks like they are somewhat flip the equation and and we're focusing on the arrival aspect or the baggage claim area and in essence that's
12:16 am
where family and friends can calm and meet their loved ones so that from a terrorists perspective you're able to get into that kind of environment and be successful with an improvised explosive device with low probability of getting caught by now there's no doubt that they have a pretty good idea. the suicide bomber based on the crime scene they may have some challenges with doing a rapid investigation of the individual that actually detonated the improvised explosive device but in all probability they've got a pretty good working file on the suspect. and data some zero to london based expert on terrorism and conflict resolution suggests those responsible for the attack are connected with international terror groups we must keep in mind that. the insurgency in the north caucuses has not now has connections with other

terrorist groups in the middle east and in other parts of the world so we are seeing yet another. yet another attack against innocent civilians on the same pattern as happened in new york and london and paris and in other parts of the world. of course the insurgency in the north caucuses has domestic moods and. there are courses for it that are local but in the end this is in my view a part of much wider international. commit the bloody scenes of the moscow attack are reminiscent of what can be seen in a computer game conversationally involves a character who is urged to kill civilians in an imaginary airport the aftermath of monday's blasts has sparked hot debate as the stuff of

the manufacturers always deny that it has any influence on anyone. denials aside some say games like this can aid and abet reality. i think though who have been radicalized already that suppose in this case your hobby is a car or other car and they look at the games and see that these games will serve them to train as for the aftermath russian officials say don't forget to go airport will recover quite soon and a range of public figures came out condemning the attack. but so far no one is coming out questioning justification for a virtual version lauren lyster r.t. new york. and we'll be bringing you more from moscow airport throughout the day here on r.t. and you can get all the details about the blast on our website that's r.t. dot com and all the latest video eye witnesses commons and expert opinion and much more available for you on line at r.t. dot com.
