takeover of the house of representatives polluting our democracy and these people are saying that's unacceptable now activists are trying to take on the coax head on to stop what they say is an agenda to transform america into a right wing led their world where corporations not the people reign supreme you will not live in the next thank you another cold turkey we're not going to do that twenty five people were arrested but this simply motivated the crowd of fed up liberals the sheriff has several times threatened the protesters here with arrest and this is what's happening right now they're telling people that this essentially is illegal they're forcing people out of the way but in many ways these people are not into or they say that this is the true show of democracy not what's going on behind those closed doors that's right right wing blogger andrew breitbart showed up to defend the koch's right to assemble and to provoke the crowd and rollerblade going to knock me out do you feel. free to. just. have

more of a crowd of all ages worried about the influence of such a small group of elites their motivation to expose the koch's right wing agenda comes from a real fear that a small group self interest will eventually lead to a crushing of social safety nets in america and a rollback of consumer protections the more people that become aware of it the more the means and god put it out there the more it will grow into something and actually maybe. even revolution will happen that's what we need in rancho mirage california come on galindo. the koch brothers have been holding fund raising retreats for years they've been shaping policy for years funding conservative and libertarian causes including the heritage foundation the cato institute and groups like americans for prosperity but thanks to the rise of the tea party the citizens united ruling and investigative reporting from organizations

like think progress this year the koch's actions have gone public twenty five people were arrested out of what has been said to be more than one thousand activists who came to protest the gathering of the so-called billionaire's caucus in rancho mirage california but will this protest make any difference especially when you counter the millions that each coke conference only delivers david dayen from firedoglake cover the rally this weekend and is joining me now live from our studio in los angeles david thank you so much for joining us now. give me from your perspective what the scene was like this weekend i mean was there really a need for police in riot gear was there some kind of a threat of violence that was announced beforehand. well i mean that's what i asked andrew breitbart actually i said you know which where is the security threat here was a was a paper but a puppet or was it the lady with the umbrella that was pink you know i view it was a perfectly peaceful rally the law enforcement was actually pretty professional

about it but i thought the riot gear the helmets the helicopters flying overhead and the baton sort a little excessive now i just mention that you know the koch brothers have long been involved in the volatile sphere they've been holding these retreats for years but it seems like in the past two years when they suddenly have a lot of attention on them a lot of you know the media spotlight is on them to what would you really credit that or who perhaps well i think there has been a lot of good investigative work you mentioned think progress and what leaf has been able to do and you've seen people you know. washington willing to finally talk about this and put this out there are all of these right wing groups that have funded the conservative movement for many many years the lead sponsor of this rally yesterday was common cause which is a washington organization that usually seeks consensus it was founded by

a moderate republican it's not necessarily the kind of group that you would expect to do this kind of direct action and the fact that they did it is is significant i think and shows that liberals and democrats are looking at ways to really counter the power of the koch brothers and doing it through shining a direct spotlight but that's what i was wondering is do you think of this is just the liberals way to counter what the koch brothers are doing because it doesn't fall in line with their ideology more than you know going after at least the happen to run a lot of policy why don't we see the same kind of concern or outcry over let's say someone like george soros. well i think you do on the right but certainly i think the difference is perhaps that what we saw in the last campaign where millions of undisclosed dollars were used by groups front groups set up by you know

conservative activists to spend millions and millions of dollars in these campaigns so i think that was one of the unifying themes around what i saw yesterday was talking about the breakdown of the campaign finance system i think if you ask most of the people out there do you want to get all the money out of politics you want to get money that comes by way of george soros or money that comes by way of charles and david koch they say sure we need full public financing of elections so i don't see this is contradictory very much in any way. well you know and i can imagine too right now with the economic situation that the country is in that really doesn't feel so good to know that there are millions perhaps billions of dollars flowing into some of these campaigns but do you think that protests like this might actually scare the koch brothers that all that they might even make a little dent in what it is that they've been you know but you have to look at sort

of over the long term i mean last year at this time we didn't know that these meetings existed i mean we had an assumption that they did but because of some diligent work this year fifteen hundred people showed up and you know at least made them that much more uncomfortable i think that the koch brothers historically have welcomed you know doing their business out of the spotlight you know the it's just the fact that they have a lot of consumer brands things like brownie paper towels and dixie cups and you know the more that that gets known puts a little a little hit to their problem possibly to their bottom line it's not going to happen overnight but i think there's a willingness on the part of even the state you know good government consensus building groups like common cause to really shine a spotlight on what the koch brothers are doing and so in that sense perhaps it

will be you know affective in the long term now of course this entire event was very secretive although you know the location was disclosed that and the rumors as to some of the people who were in attendance this year. yes we believe that house majority leader eric cantor was on hand. presidential candidate herman cain who is one of the only announced republican presidential candidates was there members of the amway fortune. and a series of other right wing billionaires there it is called the billionaires caucus after all were on hand to hear different lectures and plot strategy well the billionaires caucus i hear they even shut down the entire hotel and some activists had made reservations of the restaurant at the hotel ahead of time and that the hotel called them inconveniently had to cancel that law so it's definitely getting a lot more attention this year thanks so much for joining us david. thank you. well

media is set up for their time by local t.v. stations in michigan or wherever or national satellite and cable networks for quick for the quick hit quick segment stereotypical kind of set up because it plays on our fears of outside muslim terrorism or even better the enemy within this so-called radicalization of american muslims that hasn't been proven yes you've had these you know these these these examples you know in oregon and major nidal at fort hood but by and large when they've done polling and even the f.b.i. as you know when they do a little background of american muslims people are content people are patriotic people are just trying to survive but that doesn't fit into the production mode of our american media that plays on fear otherwise it becomes a crime story it's an older white male it oh he's part of our community if it's a young somali man he's outside of the community and what's ironic is this mosque

is one of the largest in america there have been middle eastern people arabs christian druze in detroit for eon where you can't tell them apart from the average of troy or so they're very even thought of as outside of the american fold so i mean why isn't there more coverage well there's still muslims even though they've been in detroit forever and have michigan accents they're still muslims so we don't cover them as careful well i also think it says a lot about our politicians our lawmakers that are also incredibly. outspoken and we've heard a lot from we have people like representative peter king is now going to hold hearings on the radicalization of islam but you know we don't have any hearings on just homegrown terrorism as a whole on the radicalization of other people this man for example the suspect here had made threats to george w. bush in the past threats you know he had written online using a fake muslim name right i thought they were you know monitoring the wrong people

a lot of the media has been focusing on that but i didn't hear anything about moscow after one day right because it's. really it becomes a crime story and that interest some people are wrong to clean become so monday's crime stories become someone doing that we just see over our heads but here we have fear we have an out you know outsiders or the in or the enemy within talking about muslims either local or you know across the ocean that makes it sexy that means you can be a little easier on your coverage and in terms of the production in terms of the research but then you've said treat the news with it you know so want to be lazy in terms of the production i mean you don't have to put a thought into it you can blast those stereotypes out everybody gets scared you get the ratings this crime stories are a little bit more complicated a little bit more boring ironically now very quickly i just had a discussion on the new york times coming out of the paywall saying a yes or no do you think that it's actually going to work i think it's going to work people want the content it's going to work i mean the average person the net
