a black box has been applied to my life and on the outside about black box. has been written the word write that book is now going to an open court process being open. and i hope over the next day we will see that box. is in fact. the arguments that the defense will be putting forward are focused around julian assange as human rights they say that his human your rights will be violated if he's extradited to sweden because sweden has in the past extradited people to egypt which is accused of torture they also say that if he goes to sweden there's a risk that the u.s. will seek either his extradition or they will try to apply illegal rendition to him to take him to the u.s. where he may be held in guantanamo bay or

a similar detention facility and they also say that he is at risk of being subject to the death penalty if indeed he is extradited on words to america they are also fighting this on the grounds that he hasn't actually been charged with any crime the swedish prosecution wants to question him about these crimes but they haven't charged him yet and they say that the principle of extradition law is that suspicion of having committed a crime is not grounds for extradition you actually have to charge somebody now the swedish prosecutor's office says that. is protected from transfer eventually to the u.s. by strict e.u. rules they say that even if they do get him to go to sweden sweden can't then do what it likes with us are sweden has to ask the u.k. for permission to extradite him onward to the u.s. and they also maintain that political decisions are not involved in the legal process in sweden so any political pressure applied by washington on stockholm would not float in the lower courts in sweden however many say that sweden has an

incredibly close friendship with the u.s. and said there would be a lot of political pressure to extradite him onward once he gets to stockholm now with this is the last day of this particular hearing but we're not really expecting a decision to be made today the judge has already said that he may take several weeks to consider this decision and then will be able to appeal if the decision goes against him so we'll have to wait to see how it pans out later on this afternoon. ok. paranoia t. not saying neutral switzerland with guns but in any other european country pretty swiss so i wonder if it's time to finally say i'm going to go to one of those. does absence make the heart grow fonder take a look at how american soldiers into remember former president ronald reagan. egypt's new cabinet is increasing pay and pensions for public sector workers in an attempt to quell two weeks of unrest but protesters are still refusing to back down

a struggle between not between mubarak and the people but pick between the american cia covert operators of u.s. power around the world and the people are having to try to get a place with somebody else it's. hard to ignore the fact that the very abuses that drove hundreds of thousands of people into the streets had some assistance from the united states people have collected almost with pride these empty tear gas cylinders that have the words made in the usa written on them and so so much for regime change so a man was as much made in america as the dictator who appointed him and who is now being thrown out by the egyptian people wiki leaks cables show the us administration was grooming him for years as far back as two thousand and seven it had already identified him as a possible successor to president mubarak. and many of our contacts believe that solely because of his military background the least have to figure in

. despite its neutral and peaceful image switzerland has a strong military tradition it has europe's highest per capita rate of gun ownership and every male citizen on the fifty years old is a reserve soldier but many question why a country that hasn't been seriously involved in military conflict for two hundred years should have been on the. training for combat preparing for war except these soldiers are from neutral switzerland and are unlikely to ever experience wartime combat. more and more the centuries old suicide militia is being child in february the longstanding tradition of keeping a government issue weapon at home as part of military obligations will be put to a vote on whether they should go on keeping their guns at home or store them in public arsenals but that's just one of the arguments local activists like to stuff

by day has been pushing for a complete abolition of the armed forces as normal cold war we totally surrounded by the european union which is. militarily speaking totally friendly so we have no war in the me so the army has no reason to be no enemy just a tradition do you think that's what someone should have an army. for. certainly not a joke just make fun you know. just play a bit more games but we don't. we don't need. a nine hundred eighty nine referendum on the issue revealed that more than a third of the swiss are in favor of dissolution a figure significant enough to pressure the government to take some action to rein in military activity the size of the army and its budget while still a substantial four point five billion dollars have been cut and the option of joining the civil service instead was introduced it's not enough there is a political clout which means that the parliament is made moves

a lot of rich people. i mean people want to know me. because they feel insecure there's still about two hundred thousand army personnel with compulsory military service for swiss males and private gun ownership for all conscripts living up to a local saying switzerland does not have an army it is an army not a pleasant prospect for young draftees like adrian feller who just don't see the point. to food. in my opinion nor me just. for security. but well i saw two army can do. anything against risking anything social problems and disorder so why should we worry about five billion

of swiss francs for something to help us solve the problems we have the arguments are there give the swiss majority still cannot imagine a nation without their men in uniform. not only the political left support evolution we're still a minority in this country it's hard to convince the population because it's really a tradition that is deeply rooted in this with psyche plus there's the rise of populism and demagoguery it worries me. many swiss feel that abolishing the armed forces is a kid to letting go of a tradition of losing that sense of security real or imagined so does a neutral country with no enemies really need an army while support for abolition is elusive the question has been asked and the debate is about to continue just are still here r.t. switzerland. may not have any of this series but we have a story line about one in this this would certainly like to bring to justice the

former us president george w. bush. disputes the concerns of protests. this story is on a website. and their team character is competing for the title of the saltine winter olympics moscow have been revealed to find out more about them that very few favorites head to my website. one of the three of water would have been a former u.s. president ronald reagan's one hundredth birthday the american media has spoken glowingly over his legacy but all of the reporting more about the myth than the man he's christine from south has this report from washington. it was a celebration fit for a king. and even though the u.s. government never had a monarchy if it did this man just may have been the king we give ourselves a little pat on the back for having made republican
2:15 am
a proud word once again. ronald reagan the fortieth president of the united states may be gone but his one hundredth birthday saw the mainstream media elevate him to sainthood he stuck to his principles he was a fantic which is i think one of the reasons why he's so admired after all of these years but he knew when he needed to compromise this sunday a president ronald wilson reagan would have turned one hundred years old the reagan presidential library is concerts a giant birthday cake and the opening of a new museum roundtable discussions on his significance from a historical perspective he knew when to hold them he knew wonderful them he was an extraordinary negotiator he had learned all that as the head of the screen actors for. the most significant republican probably since abraham lincoln one of the best things about a president who's dead and gone is it's ok to have a selective memory about what he actually did while in office under reagan the

number of employees in the federal government grew from two point eight million to three million national debt grew from seven hundred billion to three trillion during his time in office and he may have lowered taxes but he also raised taxes still here sarah palin for president reagan said you have me for big government big taxes and big bureaucracy do be for the little guy perhaps that simply because reagan wasn't always for the little guy in one thousand nine hundred one he fired more than eleven thousand air traffic control workers who had gone on strike again what you probably didn't see during the reagan. media love fest if they do not report for work within forty eight hours they have forfeited their jobs and will be terminated scenes like this all but forgotten from reagan's pre-presidential days. instead he is remembered as the man who rode in on horseback to rescue america it's

2:20 am
the precious metals have stalled and whether going next i'm not drawn by tim mccutcheon from a vulcan called thank you for coming to the studio so what happened to these precious metals why have they performed so poorly well it's all relative term and i think traders tend to have a very short term view of things and we've been in a bull market for the better part of ten years now and you know if there's a correction if things don't go up all the time forever of course they correct they come down people take off profits but the timing of course is always an issue you know in general people don't like to sell off things before the end of the year because basically they pay the performance of their funds as closing in december thirty first ones they pay performance they reallocate capital and that goes to basically selling off things and buying new things have a tremendous run last year so it's only natural for to come off a bit and general the fundamental underlying factors of performance are still there you have massive inflationary printing of money throughout the world not only in the us but in other countries as well and you have a stagnant basically recovery in some of the major economies in the world so the
2:21 am
question is you have more money chasing the same amount of goods which will result in inflation and i think you'll hear more and more talk about inflation now within sort of mainstream comics circles whereas maybe a year ago two years ago the talk was deflation deflation deflation and therefore gold it had a little bit of a head one headwind now it seems that basically people are sort of understand it it's not a question of will there be inflation is a question of how much there will be so i mean how like other markets to work to go to this gold rush and what price of gold you expect by the end of the year. the thing about gold it's very hard to put your thumb on is that it's really not a commodity it's money it's. basically a medium a transaction in a way of storing wealth in absolute terms to give you an idea of the what's been happening in the past two months china's import over two hundred tons of gold so basically take the entire production of russia china is consumed in two months it's normally a figure in a small private individuals not mentioning you know national banks. so china is
2:22 am
bringing in money in the of course is a huge tradition of buyer of gold. basically for the first time in many many years central banks have been buyers of gold in two thousand and ten so you know it's really all about the marginal buyer and it's right now what we have is gold production is more or less flat or declining it has been declining for the past fifteen years. and so it's really a question of how many people are willing to hold their savings in u.s. treasuries for example or another a fixed income instruments or they want to hold an absolute store of wealth to buy gold so it's really hard to put a price target on it but i can tell you that it's very unlikely it's going to go down more than go up so basically when the when times are bad gold goes up that more or less or less is basically the thing is interesting is that when the yields on a fixed income come down to zero the opportunity cost of holding a non yielding instrument like gold goes away so that what's the point of me holding the gold was zero percent interest when treasuries yield very little anyway
2:23 am
there's really no in the treasury will see a deposit in a bank so the relative attractiveness is gold's a lot safer than a promise from a government so i'm going to give up half a percent interest on my checking account in the whole goal so basically do you think that gold is becoming an asset bubble no because and again i you know i've been asked that question a lot and i don't really say that lightly because obviously there are there is an endless history of people say the bubble still got to go and of course suppose i mean looks ridiculous i don't think that well dispersed through i mean the last time gold really had a run up which is in the early eighty's and then paul volcker was the fed chairman at the time and he raised interest rates very aggressor. to basically control inflation us and you saw gold essentially spike and then come crashing down everyone says the same thing's going to happen again of course they've been saying that for the past ten years and it hasn't happened yet it's really all about absolute terms you if you look at gold in absolute terms sort of the relative cost the gold to other commodities it's basically held still you can take a chart of the price of oil in the price of gold price of oil in ounces of gold and
2:24 am
you'll see that it's more or less at that relationship pretty stable for over a long period of time so it's hard to say that there's a discrete bubble in the gold space and only go on i think that's that's not true to say it's about what's the best way of investing into gold if you want to basically you know hedge your debts right i mean. one of the biggest problems about gold obviously one of the ways of doing it is simply buying coins and again there's really no point in buying rare coins because there's a value there that very hard to get your fingers on you know an answer gold is an ounce of gold in the fact that it's got you know from one thousand nine hundred seventy two from one nine hundred eighty or from two thousand and ten it's sort of irrelevant frankly so just buy gold coins from from a statement or from a very reputable producer of gold or silver for example you can buy those coins and have them deliver to you there is something called the exchange traded funds e.t.f. g.l.d. is the largest one which buys physical gold although there's some question as to
2:25 am
whether or not actually buying gold or just buying futures contracts so there might be some counter party risk there there are certain e.t.s. where they specifically say there's a fixed block of gold in a swiss bank account in the vault and that's it and so they're not very liquid but at least you know there's gold behind the stock that you're buying more as an e.t.f. like g.l.d. sort of basically the issue shares and they back them up by buying futures so there might be a little counter party risk there but in general that's how you go about doing is buying coins buying an e.t.f. on the stock exchange it's a reputable e.t.f. . or buying gold mining stocks the general director of a gold mining company we're exploring for gold in the russian far east you really have to do your homework when you buy stocks mining is a risky business ok well thank you very much thanks very much for that. and that's all we have time for and this edition business program but you can always buy most or even a website called business or join me at twenty past. this
