seven thirty am in moscow good to have you with us here on our t.v. easier headlines seven more suspects identified in connection with a moscow airport bombing in january this after russia's most wanted terrorist claims he ordered the attack. with the leaks founder julian assange in court in the u.k. for a second day fighting extradition to sweden with a hearing set to resume friday sun his lawyers say political pressure from washington could see him handed over to u.s. authorities. and egypt's president hosni mubarak offering to reform the constitution in an attempt to diffuse public anger but thousands for back into tahrir square in cairo with an apparent rejection of the proposals and continue to
11:31 pm
demand his resignation. headlines back now to washington for part two of the alone issue. my well it's time for tonight's tool time ward and tonight it goes to a tech company that decided to use their skills for something that really is just so distasteful alcan relapse created a game called smuggle truck operation immigration for i pads and i phones and it seems designed to be downloaded and played like an app but the theme of the game is coming under a little bit of fire you see the gist here is to drive a truck full of immigrants over the u.s. mexican border and as we're driving the truck you run over all sorts opticals things like dead animals rubble cliffs mountains and so the goal is to keep as many
11:32 pm
of those immigrants inside your truck as possible and the more immigrants hang on at the end the higher your score check out a clip of this game for yourself my . that you got to see the part where the baby fell out of the back of a truck come on one of the developers of the game says that the concept here came about after hearing from many people about how difficult it is to emigrate to the u.s. so the game was designed to make a statement about the struggle that immigrants face and the best part is that the games creator even promised that they weren't trying to be offensive they went so far so try and make sure the immigrants in their game weren't what you would totally expect from a quote stereotypical immigrant they even made a nerdy looking one with the pocket protector for the nerdy looking immigrant was
11:33 pm
there not to the games critics and they keep them happy so as you can imagine immigration activists are opposed to the message of smuggle drugs they say that it's disgraceful to make money out of an issue that leaves as many as one hundred. people dead each year and i completely agree did you say see the way that these bodies were just flying out of a truck that's not funny that's not fun so can we just accept that some things aren't made to be made into video games such as the trafficking of human beings and call it a day that's just a thought and that's why the creators of smuggle truck are tonight's tool time winners. now the drama over wiki leaks documents released online and who should read that information has become a never ending the bait here in the u.s. state department cables are out there posted all over the internet written about in major newspapers for the entire world to read but the u.s. air force still doesn't want its own people reading any of that information online so today they're releasing an official warning not to guess what apparently family
11:34 pm
members of soldiers are also being watched and a just released guidance document therefore said that almost anyone in the u.s. especially soldiers and their families could be prosecuted for reading those documents and in the air force guidance documents it states classified information does not automatically become declassified as a result of unauthorized disclosure and accessing the wiki leaks site would introduce potentially classified information and classified networks. now i get it i understand that just because someone seen some kind of classified information it doesn't make it unclassified but it's not like this is just been passed around by a few people let me mention again it's been published in newspapers on websites everywhere within the air force they've already blocked access to wiki leaks so this latest move is just an attempt to save face by the military of the whole embarrassing which leaks ordeal but they really are they really going to go out and charge your teenager under the espionage act if they happen to take a glimpse of
11:35 pm
a document say when contacted about family members also facing charges a spokesman told politico that the guidance is now under review but they said we were just trying to give guidance to military and civilian service members and employees to control their youngins yeah yeah the military spokesman actually said youngins in an official statement but that's a whole different story either way this drama over wiki leaks is really getting played out and trying to prevent people from reading information that is at this point public knowledge is just stupid if you ask me. and how many times have you heard the president say that our mission in afghanistan is to disrupt dismantle and defeat al qaeda or is it the taliban or is the both see the two are not one in the same they have different goals a complicated history and the links between the two aren't permanent and can be exploited for u.s. political and military gain that's something that
11:36 pm
a new report by the new york university's afghanistan regional project has just stated that it may be possible to reach a separate peace deal with the taliban the keeps al qaeda out of afghanistan but there are attempts to hammer the taliban through night raids home searches well they're in vertically creating opportunities for al qaeda and the taliban to become even more closely knit so when are we going to get it to our strategies are working jointly to discuss it as paul mccleary reporter for defense technology international paul thanks so much for being here thank you now before we get into strategy which of course also what we're talking about i want to ask what you make of this report in terms of the taliban and al qaeda i mean is there anything here that we don't really know already that the taliban al qaeda are not the same people that they have a complex history that perhaps our strategies are only making them you know bringing them closer together right i mean there's several books are lawrence wright is a looming tower kind of made this argument about the relationship between the taliban and nine eleven and it was fractious and more the omar and bin laden didn't
11:37 pm
see eye to eye on a lot of things and bin laden. didn't keep him in the loop you know the taliban had no idea from the what we know about the nine eleven attacks that said that they did give them sanctuary. and since the war since the american invasion in two thousand and one you know there's been a large back and forth but the authors of this report have lived in kandahar since by then about two thousand and five or so so they're talking to taliban members talking to afghans and they're really getting real time intelligence from. people on the ground who are in the fight and who are saying that you know there are differences here that could be exploited for example the fact that al qaeda wants to wage a global jihad and the taliban just want to control afghanistan but i think this also brings up you know so clearly some of the problems in the way that we approach this war and the way that our strategies work is that we're never really sure what our message of what our goal is you know is our goal to bring democracy to
11:38 pm
afghanistan and keep the people of afghanistan safe and just weed out the taliban there or is it to fight al qaeda globally all around the world make sure that there's not a safe haven for them in afghanistan or in pakistan why i mean i think part of the strategy is to try to eliminate a safe haven in afghanistan to try to pressure the safe haven in pakistan so we're fighting a war in one country. where the real fight is actually in another country. one of the things of the report states is that a lot of the senior taliban leadership has been eliminated over the past few years so our strategy is actually successful in that regard in killing the top commanders but then that brings up a new generation of taliban commanders who you know grown up since the soviet invasion only know war there might be a lot more radical. division guys and probably less prone to negotiate but do you think that we also have a bit of a black and white approach to this because the karzai government has tried to
11:39 pm
negotiate peace talks even though there is an imposter and some of those have completely embarrassing with the taliban and that's something that the u.s. never supported and then in regards to this report and then we'll move on max boot a certain journalist out there decided to mention the fact that these authors collaborated with the taliban leader in his autobiography and therefore it's taliban propaganda propaganda that they're falling into where is you know it's not just so black and white everyone is not evil or good and you know perhaps that's also part of the problem with our thinking when it comes to this conflict of the poor. stricken including the translated. memoir a few years back they didn't collaborate with him on a book i mean the editing then translated it. and as a political memoir of course it's propaganda so i don't think it's up to them but isn't it part of also understanding your enemy or whoever it is you know on their own turf from their own minds i know that you've covered you know u.s.
11:40 pm
forces training afghan security forces and unless you really understand these men and their mindset how can you properly train them exactly i mean if spoke is not a good book i've read it leaves lots out if you just read his book and in the history you would think you know it's just invaded afghanistan for no good reason. you know nine eleven is a loss of lives but it's important to get his viewpoint he's no longer a taliban commander i mean that some are even some are going over there but he lives in kabul you know free he did some time in guantanamo bay he was released a few years ago but. it's critical to get the viewpoint of these guys because there's not a lot of guys selling them for the microphones or podiums from the taliban telling us what they want and what they don't want and what their goals are they're just like you to these days right. now you know paul so let's let's say a little bit into mike mullen who released a new military strategy today for the first time in seven years and basically he was saying that we have to think global we can't just focus on iraq and afghanistan anymore you know we have to start moving on but i'm confused because i thought we
11:41 pm
were already i thought that we already have thousands of military bases around the world and that. you know that we were waging shadow wars in countries like yemen and what's so different about this documents like this. are worth the kind of are worthwhile in that they kind of reset the debate but they don't really do much i mean they don't say this talking doesn't give any specific steps that we're going to take next and says you know we need to think globally as you said but i think what they mean by that is not sending special ops forces all over the world to take people out and what they mean is. training and advising local police forces local military local coastguard that's a big thing for a kind of piracy that's i'm doing a lot of especially in africa with african command. and they do talk a bit about partnering in an advisory in the strategy which you haven't really before the the quadrennial defense review mentioned it but i think that's going to be a big mission going forward unless we want to invade them in the nigeria and
11:42 pm
somalia which we don't so what we want to do is go in and train the local forces to impose some sort of law and order. well to save themselves as we've been trying to do in afghanistan which we find fortunately miserably failed well there's a making some progress but the progress is. you know two steps forward one step back they've made a lot of the for a lot of police out on the streets in afghanistan were acting as you paramilitaries . but that there's been no real judicial reform in afghanistan so the police can arrest people but then the court system is a mess word even exists so you can arrest people belong if you can't prosecute them of course i mean it's the same problem of the government of mexico as complex as again paul thank you so much for joining us and we'll see whether this strategy does take hold and thanks very much. well sort of comments and i felt he's known in the t.v. business for his temper about him to stop a cable network today from offering him
11:43 pm
a new show and partnership with the company for include all the men and current in a moment and there's a new television show coming to the usa called georgetown that's a story about a young twenty somethings are trying to make that daring say ok show is set in boring in d.c. it's actually turning to the head of cast that. well when one deals with water it has to realize that this tremendous amounts of damage that are done not just human damage but damage to the physical environment in which the battlefield takes place tremendous amounts of damage done by aerial
11:44 pm
bombs by napalm boy coming from the city whether it's sonic boom city tractors marine mammals or it's the burning oil field syria and iraq or it's destroyed coral reefs in the pacific for landing purposes the list just goes on and on the geneva conventions of nineteen forty nine states that there shall be taken in the war to protect the involved against widespread long term and severe damage the united states although it is accepted almost all of the provisions protocol one has taken exception to that.
11:45 pm
our goal is not stop we are going to get. back on track. we'll have a rally we'll sell lots of beer will. they will wear uniforms that will damage is the black man over there but very little damming the white. they are the key to our problems are all right. more news today violence has once again flared up. these are the images girl has been seeing from the streets of canada. china operations to rule the day.
11:46 pm
and the effort to keep teen safe in los angeles county is being met with a lot of skepticism. see there have been a growing safety concerns over raves or dance parties held at los angeles coliseum and usually at raves there are a lot of drugs being passed around one of the most popular is m.d.m.a. better known as ecstasy but the coliseum has had problems one teenage girl died at the music festival last year hundreds of others have been injured after experimenting with the drug. so in efforts to curb the number of raving teens ending up in the hospital l.a. county health officials quietly launched a campaign offering tips on how to use ecstasy safely now reports say that officials are going to distribute these pamphlets with guidelines on how to avoid overdosing on m.d.m.a. so some of those tips include staying hydrated sticking to low doses of the drug
11:47 pm
keeping an eye on your friends not mixing ecstasy with alcohol or other drugs and they even suggest that the safest way to party is to nix m.d.m.a. altogether which i got to say i think that's pretty obvious the safest way not to get pregnant is not to have sex with that don't really seem to work either did it now as you can imagine some people say that these tips are just going to encourage people to use the drug but i say if they keep the kids like to rave safe then why not have a few tips out there because let's be honest the health officials are persuading teens to try the drug they're just being realistic knowing that teens are going to be experimenting while they're at the party so why not teach them how to be smart about it. now most of the t.v. and political world were stunned a few weeks ago when liberal t.v. news anchor keith olbermann said goodbye to his viewers on a friday night allman announced that he was leaving m s n b c and his show countdown that night after eight years on the air now it's fairly common knowledge
11:48 pm
that keith and the suits and b.c. had a pretty rocky relationship but now comes word the overman already had a job lined up before he left m s n b c current t.v. which is run by former vice president al gore announced today that he has taken an . equity stake in the public affairs channel and its title of current t.v. is chief news officer and he's going to host a one hour primetime show airing each week night from new york starting this spring now current t.v. is prime is a privately held company and executives on a conference call today wouldn't disclose revenues only saying if the company is continuing to experience growth and alderman promised an improved an amplifier version of his old and s. n.b.c. show which did help to find m s n b c is a liberal voice in cable t.v. and a counterpoint to fox news is more conservative and so let's hope the keep can actually keep his temper in check here because basically every network he's worked up before
11:49 pm
always left it on bad terms when he left e.s.p.n. years ago things were so bad that he's reportedly banned from coming on the cable stations campus in bristol connecticut so good luck al gore your new marriage with keith olbermann the guy has a temper that's a legendary and when he leaves a job he doesn't just burn bridges he torpedoes them. catholics out there have you seen recently do you find yourself taking the lord's name in vain or did you fail to keep the sabbath day holy well don't worry because now there's an app for that you have the roman catholic church has officially approved an app called confession designed to do just that for just a dollar ninety nine this application can prepare catholics for the act of repenting or in modern terms confessing your sins that features all ten commandments and has such men use design to pinpoint that exact sit so i know it's over you might be thinking out there what if they don't have my sin already saved well that's no problem you can add your own sinful action on your own and the best
11:50 pm
part about the app is that it's password protected so when you put down all of your dirty deeds nobody else is going to be able to see them so i gotta give the pope props on this one i think i mean we know he has an i pod he's pro social networking and now the catholic church is officially bless an app for confessions i guess such as prove that they really are getting with the times but a warning to all the religious people watching out there apparently according to the church this does not replace going to church every sunday and nor does facebook or place or friends as we learned from the pope last week. now is the d. the place where is d.c. excuse me the place where television come to think about some of the most popular reality t.v. shows out there which move from city to city season to cd season to season they've all tried out the nation's capital and all experienced pretty dismal ratings. she is still out to get. boring is one thing d.c.
11:51 pm
is not. the emmy nominated talk shipments to washington d.c. so we could clear the topic she said i have the passion and that's why our generation is so important work in a position where we can take a stand on things and our voice look i think we'll probably do so really. decent. so now can i new drama save d.c.'s image and make cool the creators of the o.c. gossip girl they're coming out with a new program soon called georgetown and in case you haven't seen the other two they're your typical stories of rich high school kids having sex doing drugs all while putting on pretty faces for high society.
11:52 pm
so when we say will it work could only a scripted drama really expose the underbelly of sex and politics here in d.c. we're here to discuss it with me is karen to click reporter for politico karen thanks so much for being here and father now first of all what is it do you think that all these other shows that have been hits like the real world. view of how i live the event that i've been so popular everywhere else just completely bombed once they came to the capitol well i think it's because people who should be on these shows won't be on these shows like the real housewives it's been great if people like sally quinn or these. really well known socialists have done it but they would never put themselves out there so they got sort of more of bulis so subtle as a way about the you know the housewives of beverly hills i mean those are the real housewives you know really what they're doing they're they're crazy they're dramatic they're thing exciting about them so do we say that d.c. is just boring dare i say
11:53 pm
a little bit more boring probably and that's what you saw with the real world it was the lowest ratings for the show and it's a show that's been around for a long time and the same thing with the d.c. cupcake show didn't do that great so reality is not really a good combination for d.c. but scripted shows can do really well and we've seen that with the west wing and c.i.s. which frankly could be filmed anywhere but it gets more than twenty million viewers so that's what i'm wondering is whether this show really might completely change if it's scripted if it's made up i guess you could say you know because you know you could say the d.c. is boring but also a lot of a big part of it is that there's a lot of very powerful people here so probably some of it happens below the radar and you would never ever dare catch on to us people you know doing whatever they do out in the open on reality t.v. for the cameras so what do you think about georgetown one of the prospects i think it could be really well i think it's good that it's scripted i think it's good that's going to be young because georgetown is very young and people know the area
11:54 pm
it's not like this thing that people aren't familiar with the college so when things do happen in georgetown if you live here there's a lot of money there's a lot of people under thirty getting into things so it could be sexy even though sex in washington often hard to get out of high school or college kids are these are already twenty something there that one moved to d.c. to make their own careers i mean could there be nothing coming political reporter on. how you hope so. it's going to be twenty somethings who are very idealistic who want to make it in washington and maybe. sometimes what they think the city is about it's not the reality you know one of the things that you mention which i think is interesting is the shows that have been successful here the west wing you know they are political shows which you would think maybe normally people really don't care about they think politics is boring or you know even twenty four did a season you know here in washington d.c. but there you really you get the intensity because you think you're watching the
11:55 pm
president. so i'm assuming some of these people are going to have to be staffers on the hill or be surrounded by power otherwise just going to be more rich kids. and that's more like st elmo's fire i think it will definitely be more political you know washington supposed to be a little sexier now obama's been in office for him to years that attracted more young people also i think it will definitely have a political slant i see some aspiring politician i see scandalous affair is i think all this will happen just. how long we've been in washington i mean could you say that changed since obama came to town because i've only been here two years so i was part of that wave i came at the same time was it really even more boring and a little farther on is sort of what i was actually born here and so i was born in washington and it has been quite a change you know we were navy blue blazers very buttoned up the red and i think people were very afraid to step up and i think people have gotten a little a little wilder but our version of wild is not it's not gossip girl so will this
11:56 pm
work i mean the fit in but the script it will help. i definitely think that the d.c. is version of wild is not what i've seen you know in l.a. or in other parts of the world but do you think that it's based on obama or is it just times are changing and d.c. has to catch up i think. is trying its very best to catch up you know this is still a town where the party goes past ten o'clock people are already looking at their watches and going home and we're in early in town or a careful town. you know maybe. the script will come off a little bit different that's actually something that i you know i've noticed here is it's an early town where is everybody goes out to get a happy hour because everyone goes out of work at five pm i don't get out of work you know notice i'm the third hours out of my everyone's already going home because they have to you know get back up and go to work the next morning so it's interesting i'm definitely intrigued to see you need to know thanks so much for being here today. well before we go tonight it's time for our tweet of the day so
11:57 pm
we just told you about the new t.v. show called georgetown which we'll talk about life here in d.c. but tonight we think that maybe d.c. residents should tweet and tell producers of the show that if you want to see what really happens in d.c. you should call your show anacostia after dark and here's a hint this show will be a true gritty crime drama or that's it for tonight's show they for tuning in to make sure you come back tomorrow when they have hip hop artist and political activist loki on the program again and this time we'll get his take on the situation in egypt now in the meantime to get you from a fan of the lower show on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed any of tonight's program or any other nights you can always catch dolly dot com some feel on a show or reposed the interviews as well as the show its entirety next is the new the latest headlines from the last.
