at two thirty pm dozens are to you line from moscow and these are our top stories wiki leaks founder julian assange launches another salvo in his ongoing legal battles threatening to sue the british newspaper the guardian the whistleblower accuses the daily of including what he calls malicious libel against him in a book they helped to publish. obama has labeled corporate tax a burden and brought many top business leaders into his political circle some critics say with his new ball street friendly's down so he's already had his eyes on the election. and russian security forces stepped up the hunt for those responsible for the moscow airport bombing that left thirty six dead three people
6:31 am
believed to be linked to the suicide bomber who blew himself up in the middle of the crowd and been detained in the republic instead so you know in a chilling coincidence a popular video game released before the attack at domodedovo depicts a terrorist siege at a moscow airport spoke with the man behind the grand theft auto series naveed khan sorry about the line between video violent video art i should say and reality. the american embassy in tehran is in the hands of a woman students tonight. iran one thousand seven hundred demonstrators and the american embassy.
6:32 am
party is sitting down with the man behind this video game nine hundred seventy nine revolution as well as many more director producer and writer of documentaries and video games for over fifteen years as well as the mastermind of the ground breaking ground theft auto franchise movie considering the thanks so much for joining us thanks for having me the video games that you have created are hmong the most popular in the world and i want to ask you if you know any numbers in terms of how many break ups or divorces some of your games have cause for people who got so hooked they couldn't stop well actually when i was casting vice city one of the actors that came me and he said this and that was this for him and we explained to him you know it's for grants out of my city and he just kind of took a step back and kind of apologized and said that he can partake in the casting and basically what happened was that he was playing grand theft auto three and he wound up locking himself up in his room while he was actually having a pretty tough time in his marriage he came out two days later from nonstop playing
6:33 am
the game to find his apartment pretty much and he and his wife guide and so for that reason he didn't feel like he could you know be a part of the new cast for grand theft auto so it's definitely had an impact was the longest period of time you heard about when someone would sit down and play your game continuously without i think this guy kind of broke the record he said he went fifty hours straight and he got to see why his wife left him this new game that you're working on one nine hundred seventy nine is based off the history of iran and apart from the fact that you were born there why did you choose. based off off this country particularly i came to realize that there is a number of different sides to a story and that this aspect if introduced in a game could kind of revolutionize how we play games it's not a matter of bad guys going after good guys or good guys going after bad guys it's a matter of or a whole bunch of people with being in a number of different colors whether they're iranian american pro-democracy the ocracy whether they want to just make money on the side by sneaking in alcohol or
6:34 am
whether they want to make sure that everyone follows the religious rules of islam these are all different stories and to be able to actually convey that and let people interact as those players would just open up this entire genre of gaming i've read there's a ring of revolutionaries students u.s. hostages even how many roles are there and how is this game you know different from the other ones we're primarily looking at about eight to ten different roles initially you'll start the game off as iranian but american born u.s. state department translator who's coming in with the objective of try to free trying to free the u.s. hostages initially amusing truths that exist in history so the initial alliance of the us with saddam hussein is one thing that we look at maybe you come in through the border between iran and iraq or maybe you use the u.s. alliance with the taliban at that time who were fighting the russians i think
6:35 am
what's different about it is that right off the bat we're allowing the player to choose how they want to go about doing this most often when people are designing games they're thinking of the westernized player i mean obviously so they're buying most of the games but as things are changing and more and more people are getting access to be able to play these games i want to be able to have representation for the people that are in other countries but how much of a clue. nicol context does this game have an especially if we talk about timing for example because of course you know the united states is building up this idea that iran is a very big threat to america and the fact that you're working on this game do you think you'll get some sort of reactions and feedback in terms of you know a political maybe message that you're trying to send out absolutely i mean i think right off the bat it's quite controversial because i am saying that there are no good guys kind of games or the real world in the real world in the real or in games
6:36 am
in games they might exist but games are really in a reflection of what we've seen in entertainment and what we've seen in politics it doesn't really make a difference what somebody says is good or words that it's a matter of perspective you know if you're in iran and you feel that the united states is about attacking you and you work as a plumber and you have three kids and you just try to take care of your living you are going to view the united states is a bad guy because they're planning on attacking you i mean this is been pretty much what's been addressed in regards to the number of civilian deaths in afghanistan but on the other side you know you take a look at. some of the good documentaries that have come out of afghanistan you get to really understand what these u.s. soldiers are doing down there they believe in the cause that they're doing and they believe that they're trying to do something good nobody is to say that this person is right and this person is wrong it's just a matter of what the situation is dictated and the legions of people that are making decisions that is kind of caused these conflicts but the people involved in
6:37 am
him might now be detroit aggressors there's a number of different facets to it and that they're not pointing to saying that americans are bad or iranians are bad i'm saying the situation is bad you know of course that debates about how much violence there is and video games has been really heated over the last couple of years especially what's your take on is there an impact on from these video games onto what happens in real life especially like you mention of gang. stan we've seen over the last year or so videos released of us soldiers when they're shooting and killing people use language that would be more relevant for a video game so what do you think about that if i'm in a situation i can't really talk when a famine a situation and i'm shooting and i'm and i'm feel like i'm getting attacked i'm going to use any language i want to do in order to kind of get myself out of that situation there's so much psychology kind of going on there in terms of it's you know it's kill or be killed if that is the situation that you are going to do whatever it takes to physically mentally emotionally get yourself to that level to
6:38 am
be able to survive but you don't think if you play video games where it's a situation of kill or be killed cannot you know impact the fact that in real life you start you start thinking like that as well not necessarily war i think definitely if you take it out of proportions then you are going to get affected but in terms of violence in video games the way i kind of look at it so different in violence in movies it doesn't make me want to go out and kind of kill someone it is it is a form of entertainment games are just as much a form of entertainment i think a big focus has been on young people playing these games and then the effect that it could have if you look at the rating system it's supposed to be for people over the age of eighteen if a person is a terrorist for many hours throughout the days in the game. or is he not more likely to go out and shoot people in the street i would say would be what would you consider to be more dangerous the video game or the gun that the person can actually get their hands on the fact that these violent crimes if we're talking
6:39 am
about the united states don't take place necessarily as much around the rest of the world in my opinion is a direct link to the number of weapons that exist in this country compared to abroad allowing people to get guns readily is far more damaging than letting people play video games that have these actual actions play out do you think it's the violence that attracts so many and this possibility do everything you want that you're not going to get punished. for when you would get punished for these things in real life is that why these your games are so popular well i mean there's definitely the factor of escapism the fact that you can actually go on and be somebody else and you can do things without really having the consequences of real life saying that i think one of the greatest thing about the grand theft auto games as well as a number of the other games that i've worked on is that they've got a great sense of humor in it you know like you're kind of laughing at you doing some of these things because it's you've got somebody next to you making continual
6:40 am
jokes and comments i mean it's meant to be entertaining it's not meant to actually appeal to a violent side of you returning to one nine hundred seventy nine. playing this game do you think it can affect american psyche when you know an american teenager for example or someone who's more grown up playing this game do you think they might start thinking differently about iran than for example what they're seeing in the media and papers and so on absolutely i mean the one of the main objective use was to start some kind of social dialogue amongst people who are going to play not just in the west but around the world things aren't so black and white when you are able to understand the side of the victim as well as the side of the aggressor in many situations what we see in the news is just one aspect of of the story but i think often we've seen when that story has actually been looked at and put under a microscope that there's a lot of other things going on there's been quite a bit of controversy about this game call of duty modern warfare two there is
6:41 am
episode in there where a terrorist attacks people at a russian airport obviously it's a game but we just saw terror acts take place in a moscow airport in that we're pretty similar absolutely what do you make of that it's funny because i played that game and i actually stopped playing that particular part it's definitely a sad situation what took place in russia that the airport and the. videogame aspect of it happens i think coincidentally many games seem to on the contrary build up a certain terror act or certain events i know there's a game out there that's called september twelfth and so on which obviously gets people to join because of certain real events that took place in terms of what's happening with games where people are actually jumping on top of controversies. i think it's foolish for us to not recognize that controversy when it comes to game
6:42 am
selling when it comes to movies when it comes to anything when it comes to ticket sales is something that drives people to jump on such marketing campaigns to want to ask you this technology is obviously moving very very quickly these days what is the most exciting thing in the world of video games we would you say can expect in the next decade in the next decade who are that i don't think i even i can just tell you that what's exciting me right now is the i pad basically all the tablets in general what can be played on that in terms of gaming is is amazing terms of game play it's just going to get more and more detail and hopefully provide people with greater experiences that we can sorry thank you very much for your thanks for having me. well when one deals with water it has to realize that this tremendous amounts of

damage that are done not just human damage but damage to the physical environment in which the battlefield takes place tremendous amounts of damage done by aerial bombs by napalm boy coming from the city whether it's on a sonic boom tractor mammals or it's the burning oil fields here in iraq or even steroid use in the pacific for purposes the list just goes on and on the geneva conventions of nineteen forty nine states that they are shall be taken in the war to protect. against widespread long term and severe damage the united states although it is accepted almost all of the provisions of protocol one has taken exception to that.
