told mine coal told me cool clothes and an evening called a role in the review of. the u.k.'s guardian newspaper accused of editing secret documents provided by wiki leaks to suit its own agenda the whistle blowing web site also threatening to sue the paper over its new book about julian assange. russian security services arrests three suspected accomplices of the domain digital airport bomber and this comes as the identity of the suicide bomber is firm following d.n.a. tests thirty six people died and almost two hundred were injured in the january attack on moscow busiest airport and. anti-government protesters in egypt gathered for the largest rally in more than two weeks of on arrest western companies also in the spotlight after they allegedly bankrolled him and his entourage for decades and opposition supporters continue to demand that president hosni mubarak step down. and egypt is the top story on the alone a show coming up and then take
11:01 pm
a look at some other current affairs affairs issues raising questions in the u.s. all up next. well convey alone a show will get the real headlines with none of the mercy parking lot out of washington d.c. cairo's tahrir square remains of the center of attention as the people of egypt continue to protest against their government so today we'll hear from a rapper low key on the country's uprising and the u.s. backing of omar suleiman next we'll tell you about a group of muslim protesters who were arrested for well for protesting at u.c. irvine but what are the first amendment some groups out there are crying foul claiming a bear as political motivation behind this case as the shallower will join me to discuss it and what about the big corporate elephant in the room the u.s.
11:02 pm
is still fighting a major unemployment problem and there are just blaming china for it but what if the problem really lies right here on u.s. soil firedoglake david dayton will join me to find out who's really responsible for the outsourcing of jobs also we have some breaking news there really is hope for this session of congress last night conservatives and democrats united in a rare move to vote down contentious provisions of the patriot act so could there really be hope of a bipartisan work being accomplished here in d.c. or is it just going to be a passing glimmer of hope reason magazine's matt welch will join me to talk about this astonishing moment in politics and make love not war that's a message sent by a sex shop in alabama just trading a gun for a sex toy that we are all about this message of hope and love so we decided to invite the owner of the strop to tell us about her message that will be at the end of the show but now let's move on to today's top story. protests in egypt continued
11:03 pm
for the sixteenth day of cairo's tahrir square remaining the central gathering place hundreds of thousands came out yesterday many for the first time saying of they have been inspired by a young google executive who mocked already is detained in secret for twelve days after he after he helped to ignite the uprising with a facebook page but the government still shows no signs of giving in with newly appointed vice president omar suleiman saying that the government will not tolerate prolonged protests what he means by that was an elaborate but violent crackdown is feared as a worst case scenario now while the u.s. continues to call for an orderly transition the overall message remains a bit allusive do they want democracy in egypt or a man who is the regime who was trained and worked with the cia and tortured for the u.s. to be in control we can see some of these inconsistency is highlighted by the music of rapper low key.
11:04 pm
right. now earlier i caught up with hip hop artist and political activist loci and i first asked him to elaborate on a statement that he made a few days ago when he said that it was foolish of obama to think that democracy in the middle east would favor him. world the united states like return as an imperial power has always had an interest in suppressing and repressing the will of the people not just in our world but in the third world if we look at democracy in palestine did the united states like that democracy when it delivered us we look at democracy in venezuela to the united states like that. democracy when it delivered hugo chavez we look at democracy in ecuador the united
11:05 pm
states would like that democracy when it delivered career a leader who demanded the u.s. leave the u.s. military leave a door did they like the democracy in the congo when it delivered patrice lumumba or did they like the democracy in iran when they delivered more so because they like the democracy in chile when it delivered and they know they didn't because ultimately when you're talking about a country like egypt you would not be talking about a pro israeli or pro american government if the will of the people was truly realized and i think that's been very obvious in the way that the obama administration has been so timid and approaching this in that we've seen so many lawmakers so many pundits here in the u.s. that have tried it carefully because of course that's our policy we support democracy except for well sometimes when that democracy doesn't like us but i want to know what you think about the fact that now the obama administration is propping up omar suleiman the former intelligence chief and now newly made vice president
11:06 pm
this is the the torture i'll shake as people call him. well this is simply a way to maintain the status quo while changing the face but the egyptian people are not stupid and they are too smart for that and they will not accept that and it's not really a matter of people not liking the united states it is not liking their land being occupied and prostituted and not liking their people being bombed and military bases on their land people don't like the people in okinawa are not opposing the military base on their land through any dislike for the united states they are opposing the military base on that land because they don't want any foreign military bases on their land and that's in japan and that's the will of the people so i call on mr obama to actually look at the will of the people in japan and realize what they're saying to him have you been surprised at all that mean today is the sixteenth day of protests going on in cairo yesterday hundreds of thousands
11:07 pm
came out some for the very first time you know but at the same time we have on my soul a man saying that the government won't stand for this they won't tolerate it for too long so you know are you surprised or inspired here by the will the people to keep protesting keep coming out on the streets just besides the fact that there is violence that it is a volatile situation. hugely inspired not only are they changing their own future they are changing us in the rest of the world but i would also say to mr salim and all of the crooks that occupy the government that the people will not accept them they are not accepted by the people and it is time for them to leave the people of egypt will not accept subservience to israel or the united states the people of egypt wish to be dignified and free but what happens if they don't leave. well that's
11:08 pm
a very interesting question i think about what we call the people of egypt not accepting that as a possibility because they haven't left yet and neither have the people and the people will not leave so there's no other option but to be artificial pretend leaders because they're not actually real a real government it's an artificial government this artificial government has already collapsed their days are already done in my in my view now look here i want to play quickly a clip from one of your recent songs it's called million man march. you go to. the heart. now here in the sinai you also talk about how people hear you everywhere they're going to be millions more now only have we seen this start with the revolution in
11:09 pm
tunisia then we've seen protests in egypt we've seen similar protests in jordan in yemen there seems to be some type of a movement as spreading throughout the middle east do you think that that's going to continue. or i think the protests in yemen particularly has revealed that u.s. foreign policy and military dominance of the region is dependent and reliant on dictatorships that suppress the will of the people and i think ultimately you can't hold down the will of the people for ever and we have all been inspired by these movements from choosier from egypt from jordan from yemen libya algeria we have been inspired and it's important to understand that these men that pose as leaders who are in fact slaves are shaking they are shaking nervous. now i think that if you watch least some of the u.s. mainstream media because that's mostly what i focus on it's very obvious that there
11:10 pm
are people here that are scared and they're trying to scare everyone else as well especially if we watch some of the commentators on fox news people like glenn beck that are saying that the muslim brotherhood is going to take over and that that means al qaeda is taking over that means that we're going to see a muslim caliphate how do you how do you react to that you know i mean you're you're you're british do you see a lot of the same british t.v. that we do here in america. oh yes most certainly mr tony blair the butcher of berg has come out with statements very similar to the statements from glenn beck in fact. it's important to realize that this rhetoric has absolutely nothing to do with religion and everything to do with israel they want somebody to maintain the status quo that mr hosni mubarak has has kept for thirty years since that they want that status quo to remain now with the what follows of the words is a religious government or not is also absolutely none of britain or the united
11:11 pm
states business it's up to the egyptian people and only the egyptian people but if you really zero in just on israel can you say that it also relates to a general fear of general islamophobia that we're seeing spread and something that i think also helps the u.s. perpetuate its wars being a war in afghanistan ten years on because now we're fighting you know muslim terrorists. of course precisely exactly these imperialist wars have been based upon the complete dehumanization and demonization of muslim people so of course this now is a convenient angle for them to play most definitely now ok we're going to see any songs coming from you directly regarding the situation in egypt. well i mean the situation is of. course inspired me so it will probably inspire my future works by the moment i'm just good mood to what's going on. in the
11:12 pm
inspiration well it's definitely something that's kept i think people all over the world glued to their t.v.'s over the past sixteen days thanks so much for joining us and you know giving us your piece and i know. coming up on the program we'll speak with estee chandler about the irvine eleven and how the charges against a group of muslim students might have greater implications for pretty speeches he's in the country and will investigate the corporate elephant in the room as it's being called so many people are so quick to look to china and other evil countries because of our high unemployment rate is the real problem right here our dog lake david data will join me for this since richard. wealthy british style. time to. go. to.
11:13 pm
market why not. why not what's really happening to the global economy with mike stronger the no holds barred look at the global financial headlines kaiser reports. we'll. bring you the latest. from the realms. we. covered. in orange county district attorney has brought charges against eleven of muslim students known as the irvine eleven for conspiring and disrupting a lawful assembly that's a move that many say sets a very dangerous precedent for free speech in this country. let me give you the back story here last february israeli ambassador to the u.s. michael oren came to speak at u.c. irvine in california and during this speech members of the muslim student union
11:14 pm
took turns standing up and interrupting each student would stand shout out a sentence or two and then move to the aisle where they were arrested and they called an israeli defense forces veteran an accomplice to genocide and a mass murderer highlighting just how politically sensitive the israel palestine debate is but did they really do anything illegal or are they just practicing their first amendment rights aren't speech is interrupted all the time for political purposes lots of many groups including jewish voice for peace are arguing so joining me from our studio in los angeles to discuss that is chandler organizer for the los angeles chapter of jewish voice for peace and q thanks so much for joining us now why don't you start off by telling me why it is that your organization is getting behind these students here. he said we believe that the students did what students and political activists do every day across america and voicing their opinion they didn't have a seat at the table they don't have
11:15 pm
a seat at power so the only way to get their message out was to do it in the manner that they did do you think that there was some kind of political motivation behind this meeting even your group mentions that this happens all the time people and people often give speeches that are interrupted why in this case was would be to become a criminal act. yes we agree it's very curious that these students who happened to be muslims are being prosecuted for doing what we and other people do all the time are used group young jewish and did the exact same thing in new orleans they interrupted the prime minister of israel bibi netanyahu speech five times they were wrestled out of the out of some of them were assaulted by audience members none of them were charged. well one thing that i find very interesting too is that this was a lot of this was a year long investigation that took place in the speech was it last february know
11:16 pm
that they you know the search warrants were involved here that this is a process that was so drawn now i know that you see irvine revoke the charter of the muslim student union for an entire year i mean all of that seems like drastic steps already if you ask me well why would there be a need for search warrants on students that were just exercising their freedom of speech we agree that that sounds curious and that it's targeted at a religious minority makes it troubling now i know also that your group advocates for peace between israel and palestine so do you think that by getting behind this group of muslim students as a jewish organization that it puts more political power behind it yet we believe that we speak for the overwhelming majority of jewish americans who are liberals who believe in democracy and would like to see the u.s. policy towards israel palestine be one that respects human rights and democracy and
11:17 pm
freedom and rights for all citizens now i know that. according to the supreme court in california there is protected speech if you're interrupting the speech as long as it's political also this is something if they've solidified in law the law to set precedent for do you have any idea this speech that michael oren gave that you see irvine last year wasn't considered a political speech what was he talking about well it's hard to know exactly because he was interrupted repeatedly and so his speech didn't get to be delivered as planned but. it's most likely that he was going to say the same kinds of things that he has said in the past and again if you're not given a voice of the table if these students weren't given a chance to make their alternative views heard they had no choice but to get their message out there in the manner that they did and i know also that
11:18 pm
your group was going to hand deliver a petition signed by five thousand people to the district attorney in orange county five thousand people that were also admitting that yes they apparently have committed the crime by these standards if they've interrupted political speeches before has that happened yet. yes this morning rachel roberts one of the leaders of our youth movement young jewish and proud and i went and we did handle livered the petition signed by over five thousand people jewish voice for peace members and other supporters who all admit that we ourselves have stood up have interrupted have made political statements in the exact same way that these students did only the differences none of us were charged with a crime are i still thank you so much for joining us and of course we'll continue to follow this story because i agree definitely sounds like if it goes through the way it is now there it's going to set a very dangerous precedent when it comes to free speech in this country thanks.
11:19 pm
thanks a lot. well it sounds like a contradiction the u.s. corporations posting record profits but america has an over nine percent unemployment rate and there's constant talk about outsourcing jobs leaving the u.s. heading overseas but everyone is pointing their fingers at other countries maybe the real problem is right here at home parties lauren lyster investigates this economic equation that just doesn't seem to be adding up. for two decades jobs and dollars have flowed out of the u.s. and across the pacific meanwhile the american people have suffered high unemployment and a diminished standard of living looking for someone to blame politicians point to asian countries on the rise seemingly at america's expense the american people have also borne the brunt of china's mercantile trade policies which promote trade surpluses through cheap exports based upon an artificial depreciation of china's
11:20 pm
currency overlooked in washington is the us corporate jungle it's become the elephant in the room this is not being explained to the american working class and to the american middle class d. or both destined to will bloom because of all this is. decided by corporate boards inside the us which are now global corporations so those who agree say it's right here the problem started that us corporations hijacked american jobs and investment dollars taking them overseas with free rein to boost their bottom line fueled by this mindset so we do look allies two ways of the deal there's no work or movements to you know cut us off from our maximization of profits and in the us it appears no lawmakers will try to cut them off either president obama after pushing to regulate the business community has taken to embracing it on here in the interest of being
11:21 pm
more neighborly he wants to befriend the u.s. chamber of commerce if we had brought over a fruitcake when i first moved in we would have gotten off to a better start making up for lost time he appointed a j.p. morgan wall street executive to be his chief of staff. and he tapped the c.e.o. of america's fourth largest corporation to head as council on jobs and competitiveness that's jeff immelt of general electric i'm confident that they'll generate good ideas about how we can spur hiring educate our workers to compete in the twenty first century and attract the best jobs and businesses to america rather than seeing them spring up overseas but optimism can overcome reality what's good for a company like g.e. isn't necessarily what's good for america g.'s responsibility is to do what's best for g.e. if that's also best for america great and it's not too bad and that goes for any company but staring powerful corporate money and interests in the face you don't
11:22 pm
hear the president saying that this guy's running for reelection nor the mainstream media beholden to their corporate owners when you have journalists treading lightly around corporate and governmental elites it almost defeats the reason for their even existing the people criticizing corporations it's all about the body. one find themselves locked out of the conversation like these plant workers fighting their company to keep their medical benefits they argue when it comes to u.s. corporations the priorities are this so it's about profits over people at this death bethanie profit over and some economists argue profit comes over america's prosperity too it's quite often that what's good for business isn't good for america lauren lyster r.t. new york. profits over people as now the free market is all about well not if you listen to the media or to business or to republicans will claim that it's our government that's unfriendly to corporations and that's why
11:23 pm
we're falling behind i guess what the friendlier the you are to big business the worse it's going to be for the american worker so how do you get the decision makers to get real and just admit it well joining me from our studio in los angeles is david david writer for firedoglake dot com david thanks so much for coming on now we hear this line all the time here that obama really needs to mend ties with the business community he himself will talk about he himself joked about it in front of the chamber of congress but i just you know for giggles here can you remind me exactly what it is that he did that was so bad to the business community did he have a breakup with them or we didn't he extend the bush taxes didn't he also is new promising to cut the corporate tax rate doesn't he have a lot of very business minded people as his close is it visors. i would say that barack obama has been the best thing that the business community has ever seen you know profits are way up. i believe four hundred ninety six out of the fortune five
11:24 pm
hundred companies showed a profit last year and this is coming after an absolute crash of the financial sector and the broader economy they were nursed back to health very quickly. corporations are sitting on something like two. trillion dollars in cash their stocks stocks are at a level that we saw even before the financial crisis hitting around the twelve thousand mark nobody's been a better friend to the business community than barack obama and if you just hear him tell it talk about all of the small business tax cuts that he put in all of the other things that you described even even the major reforms that he did such as health care were a boon to securing a place for the private health insurance market so i think he's been quite quite good to the business community here in america well then how is it that we get this
11:25 pm
message that the business community is the victim i mean i'm not blaming the business community for the way that they act because that's what business is about the you worry about your bottom line and it's the government's job to look out for their people right but how is it that the business community. that makes it so that they are the ones that you know are in trouble here and that need help. it's a real triumph of p.r. and marketing and triumph of negotiation they figure that as long as they can play the victim as long as they can play to. this belief that they are being persecuted with burdensome regulations and confiscatory taxes that they'll end up getting a good deal in the end and they certainly have and they've done it as as your piece attests to in some ways at the expense of the american worker because it's simply
11:26 pm
more profitable especially for multinational corporations to take a lot of their business overseas capitalize on emerging markets where there's more demand for their products and leave the american worker behind but is there anything that you can do you mean let's say that the u.s. does cut the corporate tax rate which we have which is the highest in the world then. is that's going to get business to come around or is it just time to have knowledge that perhaps business doesn't need the american worker anymore and we need to find some other way around this situation. this is a very troubling thing i mean you know the corporate tax rate i don't think it's going to matter one way or the other if you look at the effective corporate tax rate what corporations actually pay in u.s. taxes it's one of the lowest in the industrialized world so you know obviously they're just trying to bargain to get those even lower and maybe that will work and maybe that won't i don't have a lot of hope actually there will be any corporate tax reform but the larger question is how do you get out of this pickle i mean it's clear that it's just math
11:27 pm
if a corporation can make more money in china and brazil and all these emerging markets then they're going to hire over there and not not hire back here if it's cheaper to hire chinese workers and ship the products back to america i don't know where this leaves the american worker is certainly not in the manufacturing sector i guess will be providing services to one another or something of that nature but it's a very difficult conundrum for u.s. policymakers you know and it's a you know it's a very scary thing i think for a lot of americans really to have to come face to face with because nobody wants to lower their living standards either and that's already something that's we're seeing happen you know after this current recession here but just tell me what role do you think the media plays here when you have corporate owned media is it impossible for the media then to highlight some of these inconsistency some of
11:28 pm
these problems and call out lawmakers and businesses. well you certainly do not see a lot of information on us media about some of the things that really matter to workers i mean in the i can't name more than one or. two print reporters are certainly not broadcast reporters they cover the labor movement. you get very little information about the the staggering inequality in america which is bigger than any of the countries in egypt in the middle east such as egypt or tunisia you see very little about the fact that over the last decade wages have fallen real wages of fallen for the american worker i mean all of these things are not really talked about whether or not that has to do with corporate ownership of media or whether that has to do with just an absolute blind spot in washington reporters
11:29 pm
because washington is doing pretty well certainly through it through the lobbying sector they have much lower unemployment there it could be a variety of factors but the truth is is that actual content on the state of american working is is very scarce in the media as well as perhaps actual content on many other issues david thank you so much for joining us thank you now still to come tonight the tea party is about to launch a new magazine so we're going to have some fun with their very first issue just ahead and speaking of the tea party they helped kill an extension on several key issues of the patriot act last night so are the tea party and the left actually going to team up to protect our civil liberties back with that and more critically .
