the military takes charge of egypt and while the west held the ousting of the president as a triumph of democracy analysts wondered just how much of the new american agenda that new democracy will involve also. the laughing stock of the world the faces of potentially the next american president as well as their bold plans for the country are revealed at a conservative party conference in washington. as ukraine prepares to co-host the next euro championships we discover a traditional instrument that might just seeing the world cops in from this group

say it was. a warm welcome to you live from our headquarters in central moscow this is our team with me and he said not way it's five pm here in the russian capital four pm in cairo where the egyptian military has started removing barricades at tahrir square despite their still being thousands thronging but was the centerpiece for the historic up people in the country president mubarak finally stepped down on friday ending a standoff lasting more than two weeks eyes are no on the egyptian army which is taking charge to see if it will be able to prepare the country for a presidential elections in september rock obama along with other world leaders welcomed the move saying the voice of the people has been heard but since the. us
9:02 am
back the following dictator and his thirty year reign there are those who question the sincerity of these sentiments and as our guy needs to can reports washington is not likely to take a backseat when it comes to egypt's new politics. in the west mubarak's departure was hailed as a triumph of democracy for gyptian to have made it clear that nothing less than genuine democracy will carry the day the u.s. congratulates egyptians for getting rid of a repressive leader it's a big change after washington sponsoring hosni mubarak for thirty years and turning a blind eye to widespread human rights violations in the country what have they been doing for the previous thirty years while mubarak was actually torturing people. putting down you know opposition by force barrack was a bad guy but he was our bad guy and as long as we had some element of control and that was good for us america's close ally is out of power but some analysts say the
9:03 am
u.s. is still pulling the strings. long term alliance with israel a deep partnership with egypt we as a country have provided more than one hundred billion dollars in aid to both of these countries there's a real investment here the force now in charge in egypt is the country's military largely financed by the united states the army will be in power until egyptians choose their next president it is the second largest recipient of american aid in the world after his neighbor israel the u.s. is pumping billions of dollars into the egyptian military which gives washington huge control over the running of the country and it's although the official u.s. position is that it's up to the egyptian people to choose their next leader some analysts say it's very likely the country's next president will be subject to american approval what took place in egypt was a military coup in a military coup inside the art of mubarak and. the moment of course they're also
9:04 am
military men but there will be no posed by the chief of the army and the minister of defense they have a very cool relationship with the pentagon don't always very very close to robert gates they talked on the phone at least five die this past week so all the washington would be supervising any seing that happens tahrir square in cairo now celebrates the end of ruled by an autocratic leader who restricted political freedoms and damaged economic progress so today people on the streets of kurdistan and ukraine in recent years after so-called democratic revolutions with western approval but the leaders who came to power were later rejected by their own people for part because so many of the great people power of being where. people could. be might be just a change of pace is that. some say the lesson that the west could learn from recent revolutions is to abstain from supporting
9:05 am
a leader just based on how convenient they are for the west rather than how much they can do for their people going to check on our t. washington d.c. . live to london now we're joined by renowned author and middle east expert tariq ali thank you for being with us this saturday president mubarak was not going to step down just two days ago what could have influenced his final decision do you think he was pressured from abroad well i think that there were two things that. the attempts made by man mubarak's deputy to cry and crush the demonstrators through violence free. ben the choice is very clear that they call in the army to carry out a blood department buried square in front of the world and that was too risky an option for the gyptian army because it might have split the army the generals might
9:06 am
have carried out the orders if the pentagon had approved them but young officers whose children whose families whose brothers and sisters involved in this uprising might have desisted so it was a very serious risk for washington and in the end they decided it would be safe to dump mubarak and mubarak then refused to carry out orders from the pentagon but only for twenty four hours he resisted for one day and the next day he was gone because the army told him he had to go and the ya me. freedom marshal. the defense minister as we've already heard is a close ally of the pentagon takes orders direct. with that said i just want you to reiterate if you can how much pressure in fact do you think came from abroad. well i think the united states had to warble
9:07 am
they were tempted to keep mubarak in power as they had done for thirty years but the gyptian people's anger and mobilization was so huge that they had no option but to dump him this is a very different sort of mass movement from the ones we saw in ukraine in other parts of eastern europe this was a movement which actually wanted to break from the ugly embrace of the united states which is wrecked their ground very saw a lot of extremely interesting things are likely to happen now and if the military attempts to portray another stooge in power to carry out orders from foreign lands it might not work because the depression people feel they are the ones who remove mubarak nobody else so you don't think that there's a danger that the military won't try to put who they want into power that
9:08 am
a democratic leader will in fact be able to be fairly elected by egyptians. well this is sort of gibson's hope and this is what i hope if the army hasn't learnt any lessons at all in crime find. disgusting cruelty torture a guy who actually tortures people himself but he would be too risky for them or if they try and find someone else who they completely trust and there's an opposition candidate supported by the mass movement and the opposition i think the opposition candidate will win and if they try and rig the election as they used to do when mubarak used to stand in the vote you might have a numerous smoove manton you might have serious divisions inside the army so it would be foolish of them to go down their group just after the mass movement has removed one dictator do you think that a mass movement is growing between the egyptian people and washington
9:09 am
i think the mass movement in egypt is a movement from national independence to mere colonialism and for democracy if you heard the slogans that were being chanted it was egypt egypt egypt meaning we are fed up of being bullied by foreign powers and forced into peace treaties which don't do was any good and our generals both directly with billions of dollars by the pentagon i think people are fed up of that and they want something different and they have forked for it and they have lost lives three hundred to get transferred died in this struggle thousands were injured they have sacrifice these things and they will not want to give them up too easily how deep then do you think washington will be involved in the upcoming elections. i think that washington will be involved and the big question washington has is nothing should happen to
9:10 am
destabilize their permanent israel that is all they're concerned about and they're also concerned about the effects of this are people now on jordan on yemen and who knows even them saudi arabia and bahrain so regardless of what washington wants to try to control the situation because when arab people in the yemen in saudi arabia in bahrain in jordan in algeria see what their fellow arabs have retrieved in to them to new syria and egypt the temptation is going to be if them why not are so it is not going to be easy for washington to control all of these countries i think the big pressure they are putting at the moment is that what ever else happens there must be no break with israel in other words the new government should carry on with the siege of gaza carry on subordinating addiction
9:11 am
in close to both of the and that is not going to be easy. and there have been out statements by critics that believe that this unrest is a us planned project and we of course have seen other revolutions in the past characters than two thousand and five ukraine georgia the so-called color revolutions do you think that this is the case in egypt. i don't think this is the case in egypt it's a very different movement in the case of the countries you describe the aim was very clear it was to really make impossible any new commonwealth of nations in what was the former soviet union and to surround the new russia with enemies to try and put american bases in there i mean that has been partially successful but not completely so a lot of money from the national endowment for democracy went into these movements
9:12 am
whatever they were given the orange blue red i can't even remember now the egyptian movement was very different it started from but ago it started slowly it began to gather strength it got more and more social layers of the people involved the working class had come out three days ago or huge strikes by workers the judges were marching on the streets this was a chain when popular up middle east in millions and millions of people all over egypt not just in cairo alexandria was out of control for one thing no one could control it the people controlled it so i think this is a very different uprising from the manufactured ones that we have seen elsewhere in the world in eastern europe in some cases so one can compare it to that what i compared this to is not nine hundred eighty nine i compare this
9:13 am
to the wave of uprisings in eight hundred forty eight which travelled all over europe that is what we are seeing in the arab world now the eight hundred forty eight uprisings. against the all strong garion emperor and the czar of russia and the equivalent of that today is the president of the united states and these uprisings sensually are directed against the people who the united states put in these countries to run but do you think it's possible to establish democracy in egypt and what are the tools that you think will be needed to do that. i think two things need to be done one we need a new constitution in egypt i think the egyptian democrats the gyptian nationalists should say we need a new constitution which to truly limits the power of beyond me to defending the country from outside attack beyond me should have no power in running the country
9:14 am
in my opinion secondly a constitution that institutionalized. crimes the democratic rights of the people and their social rights don't forget that large numbers of forgive live in abject poverty that this government this dictatorship of mubarak and before he wrecked the car we removed the social safety nets people want food subset. shelter they want to education for their children they want to help these rights should be trying in a new constitution and i think once the movement has now had time to reflect on needs to be free it has to demand the election of a constituent assembly which would prepare a new constitution historian tariq ugly live on the line with us from london thank you very much for your analysis thanks frank. in

a few minutes here on r t the us maxing out. the interest we're paying so it's good for us to be in doubt you think some day not this watch how deep granddad can the us let before bankruptcy comes knocking the president trying to find out on the streets of new york. out of the euro two thousand and twelve championships in poland and ukraine the hosts have unveiled tuneful new objects may be small but they hope their traditional instrument will pack just as lot of punch as it's africa. cousin dead last year are to elect they are said to give reports from ukraine. remember the whole mark sound of last summer's football world cup the distinctive drawing of the traditional south african horn there was still a. meet it's
9:16 am
equivalent for the euro two thousand and twelve championship to be held in ukraine and poland this whistle is called this is only named and shaped after a cool and just like it was a law it dates back thousands of years but not at the reporter get aboard the trip only a culture where there's a leap to came from united money countries ukraine poland moldova romania and the balkans we want to use it at the twenty twelve championship to let everyone know of our roots we're not saying this instrument is purely ukrainian i would rather say it's purely slavic. those behind the idea to use this is a lead to euro two thousand and twelve say they will try to avoid there was ill effect which brought complaints from the sound that the powerful pitch of the african horn was irritating and drowned out the atmosphere and like a monotonous roar of a who was ill of this ukrainian musical instrument provides a far more melodic sound and just about anybody can play just about any tune.
9:17 am
professional folk musician maxime business says any football fan would master this instrument in no time and there was particularly keen could play even more than just football songs. not so those nor was are you see it took me less than five minutes to teach you how to play it's really easy to use i've been playing for some time and i've learned to play tunes binder of honor and many other musicians. costs under five dollars coming in various sizes and either clay or plastic but this spotter has been making these birdies for most of her life says the more natural there's only thirty more positive it's why limit them make sure they're ratios as
9:18 am
a lead comes from the solo ukrainian soil countries friendly every pass and coming here for the twenty twelve couple feel it and this is literally transfer the positive emotions of our land to every family uses one of those pushing this is the need to hope it will become the unofficial emblem of the euro twenty twelve championship the sound feeling stadium next year in ukraine and poland will tell how successful they have been. r.t. reporting from ukraine. and still to come up wrote. the red planet the crew of the mach mars five hundred mission is nearing its destination and although it's only virtual the scientific work of the experiment is very real. as potentially u.s. presidential candidates start putting their minds for the twenty twelve elections the list of burning issues for the republican candidates is growing longer by the day one of the biggest is military spending and all the possible runners are having
9:19 am
their say on the issue arches dinner kosofsky looks at some new names on the scene . if you've been wondering who i am one of you. could possible are we going to let the washington post walk up to forty. one day become the next u.s. president. while i'm not at this time a candidate for the presidency i will decide by june whether or not i will become one if you came to the right party and that's precisely what it is we're going. to see pack everything here the fact that the next president of the united states. it's just a stone's throw away and though he hasn't officially announced it it is going to take a lot more of the new rhetoric to put americans back to work it's going to take a new president all eyes were on mitt romney what about this very clear if i were
9:20 am
to decide to run for president who according to a recent rasmussen poll leads obama in a potential presidential race in two thousand and twelve and who just recently opposed the new start treaty which would limit the amount of nuclear weapons in both the united states and russia and which was supported by leadership of both parties neustar needs our national security. and potential candidate michele bachmann had quite a few eloquent things to say about u.s. foreign policy particularly china with all the money that we owe china i think we might rightly say. who's your daddy but in this interview when discussing foreign policy bachmann it wasn't joking this is the time where we need to be on red hot alert five alarm alert and instead of calling back and taking our weapons off the table we need to care and another presidential hopeful has been gearing up for years now especially when it comes to dealing with iran and ahmadinejad he gets to i thought tel aviv maybe this role as use nuclear weapons to iran he would accept
9:21 am
that in a minute. because she believes everybody in tehran goes to heaven and everybody in tel aviv does and now he's really angry at the u.s. president the obama administration is wrong on terrorism wrong on iran wrong in the muslim brotherhood wrong on hezbollah but hating obama is where the agreement seems to end because this year here is the compromise that conservatives also will have to make we will have to look long and hard at the military budget. i don't think it's going to be i knew there had to be some dissension so. some fresh faces are willing to say in with the new out with field but establishment republicans there may be the temptation to axe everything including the defense but still have something to say and the money to not only say it but also to believe that the united states is becoming the laughingstock of the world but when
9:22 am
realistic ideas too often get drowned out you cannot say that the doubling of the military budget in the last ten years has all been spent wisely and that there's not any waste in the job. you just be on the. scene of the saucy r. t. washington d.c. . well no matter who becomes the next president one of the main challenges they'll face is the growing budget deficit but as reports show it's risen almost fifty billion dollars leaving some analysts to warn the u.s. has passed the point of no return or very own new york resident laurie harper this hits the streets of the big apple because their people really think america is bot . the u.s. has a new budget coming out can america ever go bankrupt this week let's talk about that well we're already bankrupt so it's like credit card debt i mean.
9:23 am
can you go at what point you hit the bottom and what point do you start screaming about it has too much invested in dollar to let america go bankrupt so now we're something that someone else has to take care of. i know but if anything happens there's going to other countries who are going to do that for us is that fair. it's really tough on not saying that everything's all right rosy at this point we're certainly not at a critical point and i think what you're pointing out is the fact that we need increased global cooperation it's not just a problem that can be fixed unilaterally either within the within the euro or within the us economy it's something that has to be fixed globally how do you stop spending when you've got thirty three hundred million people to make sure that they're healthy and have enough food and all that kind of stuff. how do you.
9:24 am
you. you have to. cut it other places maybe stop going to war with so many people. as a real expert we mean there's a lot of countries that are surviving for the interest we're paying so it's good for us to be in doubt you think some debt not this much is it ok that our country is built on a deficit system. if you look at a lot of companies now they are so no it's not but we should rebuild on a surplus either do you think the rest of the world needs us to be in that yes i do feel like questions like these are sort of useless to people like me because it feels like it has nothing to do with. whether or not you think america can ever go bankrupt the bottom line is with a deficit that continues to grow something's gotta give one way or another.
