the two organizations growing closer out of his address to the alliance in two thousand and nine but why would the u.s. try to pressure its allies. as one of nato as key players the u.s. tries to prevent the alliance from growing too close to the russia in the former soviet bloc because the region is of strategic interest to america they of course would prefer to build exclusive bilateral relationships strong ties between two military organizations such as nato in the c.s. is not in u.s. interests. this is an odds with the image of the alliance tries to project a strong union where every opinion matters even the people in the street understand that washington is calling the shots so. left right left right yeah so this is this is what is happening in reality that people no documents published so far haven't exactly uncovered anything groundbreaking but if every member a nato is supposedly equal it has raised questions over whether the u.s.
4:01 am
will really trust the alliance at all gas trainers are the r.t.e. . the wave of anti-government protests that started in tunisia and egypt continues to rage across the greater middle east clashes have continued across yemen in what's now the eighth day of protests protestors have been using social networks to pass as many people as possible to hit the streets how much can the day of rage libya at least twenty people were killed as police are reported to have used firearms in various cities in bahrain mourners chanted anti-government slogans after security forces dispersed thousands of rioters in the center of the capital manama the opposition reports at least three people were killed and one hundred injured mideast expert mahdi darrius now says although the region is in turmoil it's hard to say just how fundamental the changes will be. because these are revolts and not revolutions yet people's mindsets or revolutionary they want change they're fed up with these are revolts until the structures in place change it won't
4:02 am
be considered revolutions in order for democratic position to occur people need to elect their officials right now we're not seeing that we're seeing the status quo in egypt the military staking over it nothing's changed it's a formal change was the mubarak was a part of the military the military hosni mubarak one of the united states and its allies are politically hedging their bets what they're doing right now is something that we call creating a counter discourse counter discourse is when you have a party in governance and in opposition if you control both sides now i'm not saying that the protests aren't genuine the protests are absolutely genuine and organic but the fact is that the united states is trying to put its own opposition figures into position to see the wise men in egypt which are unelected individuals billionaires people who were it part of the status quo part of the regime in fact
4:03 am
who did nothing when mubarak was in power. and as those protests rage across the middle east debate is heating up over which country may be the next to see its lee . go down later today you can cross talk about his guests if iran is likely to follow the examples of tunisia and egypt or whether that will just be wishful thinking from western governments. but what's the risks facing. as we talk about massive changes going on in the arab world part of the problem is that no one knows the extent of the opposition because most of the logs go off as leaders with force of the ground off of the off the demonstrations in june two thousand and nine after the election so the true it left of discontent with the government remains very very hard to quantify actually so no one's really said it on this program it i'll ask you the question this point blank as i always do are people tired of having the islamic republic of iran i didn't vote for mr ahmed in a show then i've said this on numerous occasions there's there's it's clear but
4:04 am
there's no doubt that he is highly popular throughout the country every province that he goes to is like a rock star you have tens if not hundreds of thousands of people who surround his but it's easy is really this we're a little surprised regime demonstration dismounting is going to do you know and that's not true if that was true then they gyptian regime could have done that no it's it's obvious that it's that's not the case. our planet is gearing up for us largest magnetic storm a new year is due to arrive later today a number of scientists have warned of possible technological catastrophe well some people are even taking the precaution of staying away from electrical appliances like t.v.'s kettles and even toasters roja i talk with our kids peer over to see whether this is all justified. peter is this the day that our cell phones arise
4:05 am
against us. really know if we're in a skynet situation just yet but what we are hearing from scientists is that we could see some interference. on our technology the technologies that we use in our daily lives this is due to a solar flare that i heard on the fifteenth of february and the solar flares essentially a little bit like a little bit like a belt from the sun it kicks out with of radiation that's now taken in the past few days to reach us here and will hit us to date now and what this can cause is some kind of. allows a lot more radiation than we've sent you we usually get from the sun now that can sound incredibly dangerous what scientists have told us though is that ground level here on earth the magnetosphere the eye on a sphere the atmosphere protecting our planet make sure that we are at no particular risk here on the scientists are telling us there are some people though
4:06 am
who are at more risk because we're looking at astronauts currently up on the international space station at the moment they will be taking precautions to make sure they safe there have been some people warning of risks to human life however the majority of the scientific community saying that we would be fine and our misfit will protect us so if the tv's are affected how about if you and me both go home right now i mean are people really going to happen well i'm hoping somebody is watching lots of it is nice that is to talk to you would be a bit of a waste if we were doing it just to just me and you talk through each other like this but we could see is what's referred to as. communications or we're looking at satellites here they can they will take the brunt of this this radiation storm is heading our way we could see things like g.p.s. affected g.p.s. i don't know if you like me get lost to every. we go very important to many
4:07 am
people's lives to get around now that relies on satellites they can be heavily affected also travel does become something that is affected homing pigeons and dolphins also as well as many other migratory animals their internal compass is can be affected by this and they can find themselves getting a little bit lost so things really won't be too badly affected one thing that we will be able to see scientists have been preparing us for is if you're in the right place at the right time you could be in for a spectacular light show in the evening time pending on where you are this this so . this solar storm passes us this radiation storm passes us it could make things like the the northern lights incredibly beautiful as they are already even that little bit more spectacular. more celestial goings on two space travelers are set to walk on the surface of mars shortly or at least a mock up version of it it's a unique projects simulating the trip to the red planet that enters its second half
4:08 am
the eighteen month long program replicates the exact conditions of a return journey to mars a crew of three russians two europeans and a chinese have been locked up in a mock space ship for almost nine months now with very little contact with the outside world they landed on a model of the martian surface last week and i've already walked out at once we'll be bringing you live pictures of today's walk in less than an hour the aim of the project is to study the psychological effects of a long deep space voyage one european astronaut says the distance makes it very difficult for them to cope. and i had the opportunity from the space station and i'm sure you call the whole month told to the families through. telephone system very old radios that three to help suit what they generally do but that's a good start this is for them they are so far away from yours so even see you see takes many minutes right now it's about six seven minutes so if you're following you know the word fifteen min this is sort of yeah i'm here. you can with
4:09 am
the people from the station road that's why they have to do with rhythm is that it is sort of coordinated you know this. when we bring you the latest developments on that story both here on our web site for those with a thirst for a little more cosmic wonder there is plenty more headed your way at our team dot com including joining the ranks of the superheroes yuri gagarin's legendary trip to space gets retold once again this time as a comic book adventure. bringing you the latest in science and technology from. the future of coverage.

her. mother her. mother. and her. sister street still keeps its secrets but now it's time to move feelin the soviet five's nikita khrushchev's between black and white on the hot seat. good to have you with us here on our t.v. it's twelve minutes past the hour while most americans are struggling hard to overcome the hardships of the recession the profits of national banks continue to rise j.p. morgan is among those cashing in and it's a contract to process food stamp payments that's helping it on its way or find out
4:11 am
how some of the rich are benefitting off the backs of poor. americans are generally known for their healthy appetite some eat what they crave while others like gabrielle jemma can't use the food stamps here for me to express of only eat what is affordable is there a way to give me two dollars worth. of these you have to go look for the sixty one year old is unemployed and maintains a monthly food budget of two hundred dollars gabrielle is among the forty three million americans relying on federal food subsidy here's. the electronic benefit transfer card allows food stamp recipients to spend their allowance the plastic lifeline for the hungry and unemployed it's also a money maker for j.p. morgan chase the largest processor of food stamp benefits in the u.s. meaning an increase in food stamp recipients equals more profit for the investment bank every time i use my debit card goldman sachs or j.p.
4:12 am
morgan in this case make a little money off of my transaction and j.p. morgan is responsible for the fact that i want to apply so it doesn't surprise me that every every aspect of of this program and everything else has been privatized j.p. morgan chase provides food stamp debit cards in twenty six states and the district of columbia the firm is paid per customer and in the state of indiana j.p. morgan makes roughly one hundred eighty six thousand dollars per month critics say the investment bank is making a fortune off american poverty as long as the unemployment rate. remains high as long as families are struggling there's sort of this perverse incentive for j.p. morgan chase to continue to benefit off of high unemployment and they're living up to this person saying no because in many states they're actually offshoring jobs
4:13 am
related processing food stamps to save money j.p. morgan has been routing benefit card customer service calls to india where employees reportedly earn no more than three fifty an hour. meanwhile in the u.s. abyss of economic hardship nearly fourteen million americans like every oh are unemployed bailed out to the tune of twenty five billion dollars in two thousand and eight j.p. morgan has bounced back reporting a seventeen point eight billion dollar profit in two thousand and ten the same success can be said for the people forty percent of food stamp recipients are working americans unable to keep up with the cost of living. archie new york. michael snyder from the economic collapse blog believes that banks profiting from food stamps widens the gap between rich and poor. it's really just all that here's j.p. morgan they receive these huge bail outs from the us so eight kids get back on
4:14 am
their feet but then they're making the sue. those suffering and the american people you know as we've seen the number of americans on food stamps has increased from twenty six million back in two thousand and seven to all of forty three point six million to date so we would see it and the americans that go and leave stamps the more money to j.p. morgan maybe there is no incentive for j.p. morgan help people get off of the food stamps no goals should be used to reduce the number or reduce the dependency of government but instead j.p. morgan what they want is to increase the number of customers big banks the wall street banks they seem to get away with the with murder get away with anything there does not seem to be just this desire on the part of the state governments to really do anything about this. taking a look now at some other stories making headlines across the globe a suicide car bombing in eastern africa and city of khost has killed at least
4:15 am
eleven people including two police officers and wounded thirty others the incident happened at a roadside checkpoint police say they were suspicious of the bomber and opened fire prompting him to detonate his explosives authorities say the death toll is expected to rise the. second day of violence in southeastern turkey after the riots marked the twelfth anniversary of the capture of a prominent kurdish rebel leader protesters the old stones and molotov cocktails at police in the city of dujiangyan happy you did john back here responding with tear gas and water cannons several people were arrested protesters accused security forces of being too heavy handed during demonstrations earlier this week over a double collins continued imprisonment. japan has called for an early halt to the whale hunting season following continued pressure by an anti whaling group in tokyo has ordered its fleet home but activists say they will continue their activities until it return. and still support the fleet consisting of four ships aimed to kill almost a thousand whales this winter commercial whaling has been banned for almost two

decades but it is allowed for the purposes of scientific research. while endangered whales have been given a brief respite from japanese dinner plates there is a different kind of eco crisis unfolding in the amazon oil companies have been dumping toxic chemicals and ecuadorian forest for decades destroying biodiversity and threatening the existence of indigenous populations our special report coming your way in the next hour here's a quick look. highly

in this news block israelis and palestinians have been long time enemies but for mothers who are desperate to save their sick children the conflict takes a back seat and israeli clinic is saving the lives of thousands of youngsters for many neighboring countries even those with whom israel is at war artie's policy of courts. every ally is touch and go for fourteen month old don't know whose initials hocked was born with a holiness that would have the operation in this hospital my son would have died and in the next world fourteen year old one yellow who was almost. when she was wheeled in one of five iraqi children flown from baghdad to a month and then driven across the border to jerusalem she was almost dead she was

so sick that you could not walk very talk she was very these parents face the most difficult decision of their lives bring their children to israel a country at war with this and risk punishment and even death back home or prepare for the alternative possibly losing their child initially it was very difficult for them because i was there in america and the parents were very anxious they didn't know what to expect i was very scared to come to israel very frightened. and she had good reason to be her country rock forbids its citizens from traveling to israel just fire them there is there might be a layover in another country like you know for instance from africa they come in there because it's the only place in africa that was. before the israeli doctors that treat these arab children the decision is simple doing what they think is right to do. anything. in the last fifteen

years more than two and a half thousand trolldom have been brought here on third and created half of them come from gaza the rest come from iraq indonesia and across africa the main goal of this organization is to help developing countries create the medical ability to treat children with heart problems by themselves in order to achieve that we bring children from these developing countries to israel we also bring doctors from these developing countries for training here in israel and it's a vision that's paying off not only is so eternally grateful to the israeli doctors that saved her daughter's life she's now brave enough to tell you neighbors back home. what i will tell everyone we were in israel and how these saved my daughter's life i'm no longer afraid to say it because my daughter is alive and so. while the politicians continue to have ability to either and israel and arab neighbors go further apart on the ground at least in this spot

a very different story is unfolding policy r.t. . stay with us here on r.t. you'll use up next with the business news. hello and a very warm welcome to the business update and the brand crude oil price past the one hundred dollar mark to huge attentions in egypt last month whether despite the political situation in the african country seeing a turning point the price for oil did not retreat more although it continue to strengthen to discuss this issue we're now joined by christian just corona oil and gas equity analyst at standard and poor's equity research christine thank you very much for joining us so why are oil prices continuing to strengthen despite egyptian tensions seeing a turning point. well even though it's tensions to a certain degree have decreased the problem is that he could have spread into the
4:21 am
rest of the region it has a domino effect we have seen a lot of tension in bahrain there are protests being called in libya and the whole north of africa and the middle east could ignite so that's the reason why we would continue to see prices going up. we are seeing a wide spread between brant and light sweet or oil prices at the moment why is this the case. historically w.t.r. has traded a bar brand because it's a higher quality oil but from time to time when you have excess inventories or exit supply in the u.s. cushing then you would see a reverse of the situation but what has happened recently are three things one we have record high inventories said cushing oklahoma where w.t. grant stated and that has been exacerbated by a keystone pipeline that was built to transport the oil sands crude from canada into the gulf of mexico the portion of the pipeline that has been built goes all
4:22 am
the way down to cushing oklahoma city. so all that oil is getting stuck there and it's increasing inventories where the portion that is going to connect cushing to the gulf of mexico will not be finished until twenty thirteen and with low the mine for oil that just exacerbates the situation coupled with that in the u.k. in the north sea we've had a lot of operational problems a lot of fields have been shut down and the fields are in decline so that exacerbates the situation so we have a physical situation that it's distorting the spread with that you have on the rest in the middle east and brant is actually the crude price to which north african crudes are in that store that's the reason why you're going to see more volatility and in the brant price which is more susceptible. cause hold with that sorry yes yes yes please go ahead. coupled with that what you have traders have seen the
4:23 am
differential and they know that it's usually temporary so what they do with they buy this bread they sell the spread sorry they buy dog. and sell brant now the situation works when he prefers is to make money but as long as it doesn't reverse you're actually losing money so a lot of traders are holding on to what you might call paper barrels of oil because they don't want to lose money as the spread widens they buy more spread bets and the situation gets worse and worse so until the situation starts reversing itself you're going to have high storage of oil in the us. you're going to have all these paper barrels that are up in limbo that don't not seem to go anywhere and the threat of this rupture and to oil supplies in europe and asia due to problems in the middle east will keep this differential going and i think it's going to be for
4:24 am
the next eight months if the situation in the middle east doesn't get resolved we will not see a resolution to the brand of lety i die lemme and they will continue to trade with brain higher than u.t.i. christie is speaking about other sectors that are pushing oil higher how far will the returning to months from china and india push the world price in shirt and region. the threat of increased demand from china and india continues to push the price of oil up that's the reason why i assume if you have positive news of economic research you see these prices strengthening we really don't know what the total demand of crude oil will be from those two nations we don't know how much of fission three or boil is going to impact that we don't know how much demand there will be out there we have more and more electrical toys which require energy we have more and more use of transportation as the world shrinks so we really don't know we can only estimate what will be the approximate demand of
4:25 am
oil from these nations but it's a big old known so as soon as you see that their figures to strengthen and go up the price of oil immediately goes up again ok christine thank you very much for your analysis was christine says carrillo from oil and gas equity at standard and poor's equity research thank you and follow your up to date now that's all we have time for now but before. ok let me just remind you that the economic forum in cross many hours is underway will bring you more in an hour's time an hour that's it from me.
