rasmussen was looking for closer ties with the collective security treaty organization made up of former soviet states the us was quick to veto the idea after a private dialogue with the us representative to nato rasmussen to all mention of the two organizations growing closer out of his address to the alliance in two thousand and nine but why would the us try to pressure its allies. as one of nato as key players the u.s. tries to prevent the alliance from growing too close to the russia in the former soviet bloc because the region is of strategic interest to america they of course would prefer to build exclusive bilateral relationships strong ties between two military organizations such as nato in the c.s. is not in u.s. interests. this is an odds with the image of the alliance tries to project a strong union where every opinion matters even the people in the street understand that washington is calling the shots. left right left or

right. so this is what is happening and in reality people know the documents published so far haven't exactly uncovered anything groundbreaking but if every member in nato is supposedly equal it has raised questions over whether the u.s. will really trust the alliance at all gas trainers are about r t. well shock waves from up peoples in tunisia and egypt have spread all across the greater middle east but opposition protests sweeping through other countries in the region clashes between rival demonstrators have once again grip young men in what's now be a day a raft anti-government activists have been using social networks to call for as many people as possible to hit the streets on friday they're demanding the country's president of the bella fight they step down after more than thirty years in power clashes also erupted in jordan capital amman where anti-government demonstrators are calling for reforms and abolishing the peace treaty with israel

protests turned violent in libya where at least twenty four have been killed in recent days and clashes with security forces police are reported to have used firearms to disperse crowds thousands of mourners gathered in bahrain at the funerals of anti-government protesters killed in a brutal crackdown on thursday many facts bird modded darrius. says that although the region is in turmoil it's hard to say just how fundamental the changes will be . these are revolts and not revolutions yet people's mindsets or revolutionary they want change they're fed up with these a revolt until the structures in place change it won't be considered a revolution so in order for a democratic position to occur people need to elect their officials right now we're not seeing that we're seeing the status quo in egypt the military state and all those things changed it's a formal change was the mubarak was
10:03 am
a part of the military the military hosni mubarak one of the united states and its allies are pleading we had their backs what they're doing right now is something that we should call creating a counter discourse counter discourse is when you have a party in governance and in opposition if you control both sides now i'm not saying that the protests are genuine the protests are absolutely genuine an organic but the. fact is that the united states is trying to put its own opposition figures into position to see if the wise men in egypt which are an elected individuals billionaires people who were part of the status quo part of the regime in fact did not think were mubarak was in power. meanwhile people have flocked once again to talk where square in the egyptian capital this time tens of thousands gathered to celebrate a week since hosni mubarak bowed to us pressure on him to presidency the day was label the friday a victory and continuation and which organizers said was aimed at keeping the

spirit of the eighteen day protest from live by the celebrations the situation in egypt still remains tense amid labor unrest and fears the current military government will not with promises to usher in the long awaited performance becomes almost a week up the council suspended the constitution and dissolve both houses of parliament . and those tensions rage across the middle east debate is heating up over which contrary might be next and having it later toppled later today and cost talk peter the vela is a gas if you're wrong likely to follow the example set in tunisia egypt or whether that would be just wishful thinking from western governments. but what's the risks facing iran as we talk about massive changes going on in the arab world part of the problem is that no one knows the extent of the opposition because most of the logs go off this leaders will force on the ground off to the last of the demonstrations

in june two thousand and nine after the election so the true it's true left of discontent with the government remains very very hard to quantify actually so no one's really said on this program that i'll ask you the question this point blank as i always do are people tired of having the islamic republic of iran but i didn't vote for mr ahmadinejad then i've said this on numerous occasions there's there's it's clear but. there is no doubt that he is highly popular throughout the country every province that he goes to he is like a rock star you have tens if not hundreds of thousands of people who surround his opponent so you see it is really his we're a little surprised regime demonstration just around six when did you know i was not true if that was true then the gyptian regime could have done that no it's it's obvious that it's that's not the case i. i. i.

two astronauts from the mars five hundred program have carried out their second walk on a virtual surface of the red planet it's part of a unique project that simulates an eighteen month mission when a cell from the european space agency explain the meaning of the imitation. so we have to assume. this is xander from russia and from china doing their second walk and you see a simulated martian surface which is no more than forty square meters and what we see there to win the their space suits which are pretty so close to what we would expect for real martian martian mission and what the two are doing is also what we would expect the first humans doing on mars namely collecting soil samples and preparing them to bring the symbols back home to have the cord which of
10:07 am
course would not be there or on the real mars and that cord supplies to the to us to know it's. with electricity and also with air and of course in a real martian mission that all would be in the big pick to us you know it's scary and there are. they are doing very well so. everybody was really surprised that everything is going so well everything one of the reasons for that it's. really very interesting goal of simulating the first walk on the mars and also if you would expect a real mission on mars we could expect that after ten or fifteen minutes astronauts would would have to take a small break the. major point here is that they are really all everybody of them is really focused on their task and that's that's the main reason why this is so so real and so close to reality you always have to do a first step and this is
10:08 am
a very good first step because it is very clear that. the mission the main mission to mars would be international and it's a very good simulation it's also an international simulation if you participation in chinese participation. if you look at the future you know that we are right now in the process of a process of extending the international space station for another ten years and then afterwards. we would do maybe the next steps but this is right now still in discussion which would be the next steps for human spaceflight there is a crew of six and it's of course a really russian project with international participation. and europe has quite good relations with the in situ for biomedical problems and that might be the reason why we are involved but there's no particular exclusion of anybody from that

project and in fact nasir is participating scientifically but not with their own us to know what. well you can follow the whole mission to mars on our website r.t. dot com and if you're a big cosmic fran a british cartoonist may have something just for you the story of our man in space during garden trip gets retold once again this time in a comic confronter book the story. and a glimpse at the personal and professional life a man change the world nobel prize winner the first and only president he wants us are about. to pounce chief cabinet secretary yukio edano is going to view russell's lester

the investment bank is making a fortune off american poverty as long as the unemployment rate remains high as long as families are struggling there's sort of this perverse incentive for j.p. morgan chase to continue to benefit off of high unemployment and they're living up to this person so no because in many states they're actually offshoring jobs related processing steps to save money. j.p. morgan has been routing benefit card customer service calls to india where employees reportedly earn no more than three fifteen hour. meanwhile in the u.s. abyss of economic hardship nearly fourteen million americans like every l. are unemployed bailed out to the tune of twenty five billion dollars in two thousand and eight j.p. morgan has bounced back reporting a seventeen point eight billion dollar profit in two thousand and ten the same success can be said for the people forty percent of food stamp recipients are

working americans unable to keep up with the cost of living. archie new york. well michael prysner from the newly formed party for socialism and liberation in the u.s. believes banks that place the burden of the crisis on ordinary americans are the only ones to blame what's happening is there's a budget deficit there's an economic crisis it was a budget deficit because of the banks this is a crisis that we know was created by lehman brothers by city big this is a crisis created by the super rich but what's happening now is that it is a demonization of public sector workers of steelworkers of teachers of nurses as if they are the ones that created the crisis as if it somehow their fault now the burden of this crisis is burden of this budget deficit is being shouldered on working families the people that need help the most while the millionaires and billionaires who created the crisis are experiencing record profits and the argument of all these right wingers and tea parties around the country is their argument is in support of those multimillionaires and billionaires who contribute

palestinians have been long time enemies but for mothers who are desperate to save their six children the conflict takes a back seat and israeli clinic is saving thousands of lives of young service for many neighboring. even those israel has had tense relations with our g.'s poles earlier reports. every our way is touch and go for fourteen months i don't know whose little heart was born with a hole in it without the operation in this hospital my son would have died and in the next ward fourteen year old one yo who was almost did when she was wheeled in one of five iraqi children flown from baghdad to a month and then driven across the border to jerusalem she was almost dead she was so sick that you could not walk very talk she was very blue these parents face the most difficult decision of their lives bring their children to israel a country at war with ease and risk punishment and even death back home or prepare

for the alternative possibly losing their child initially it was very difficult for them because i was their enemy the parents were very anxious they didn't know what to expect i was very scared to come to israel very frightened. and she had good reason to be her country rock forbids its citizens from traveling to israel just fire them there is there might be a layover in another country like i know for instance from africa they come in there because it's the only place in africa that was. before the israeli doctors that treat these arab children the decision is simple doing what they think is right to do and doing anything. in the last fifteen years more than two and a half thousand trolldom have been brought here on third and created half of them come from gaza the rest come from iraq indonesia and across africa the main goal of this organization is to help developing countries create the medical ability to

treat children with heart problems by themselves in order to achieve that we bring children from these developing countries to israel we also bring doctors from these developing countries for training here in israel. and it's a vision that's paying off not only is saidee eternally grateful to the israeli doctors that saved her daughter's life she's now brave enough to tell her neighbors back home what i will tell everyone we were in israel and how they saved my daughter's life i'm no longer afraid to say it because my daughter is alive and so while the politicians continue to have a go at each other and israel and her arab neighbors go further apart on the ground at least in this spot a very different story is unfolding policy r.t. hold on. a live business update is next here on r.t. with dimitri they with us. thanks very much and it's modernization yet again one of the key words in your

krasnoyarsk economic forum being held in russia. with how to further track capital a hot topic under a lot of the thought of altera capital says that generating the necessary funds is not difficult once proper management and skilled labor allocation addressed as soon as there is the concentration of the management of government although for the brains and grit to salute you for that you are doing sure from a. professional investor will come there because you know which of sectors for the economy money is not the key resource but it was not because really it is the number one. russia's finance minister alexei khujand inflow of foreign direct investment into russia has fallen by one and a whole of one hundred fifty percent last year to around thirteen billion dollars however earlier on cooter it stated that the growth of foreign investment is vital
10:21 am
for the aimed at annual growth of more than four percent now to discuss the issue we're now joined by chris we've achieved stratus that we're also chris always a pleasure to see you in the studio so is this going to continue this trend of declining f.d.r. it better not to think and as we heard from the finance minister today today russia now needs to attract a substantial increase in foreign investment both in terms of capital as well as expertise remember we need both. if russia is really to develop its industries in the modernization program is to is to develop as planned growth in the last ten years was fueled by about a one and a half trillion dollars worth of oil and gas revenue the budget now needs of a one thousand nine hundred ninety five dollars to balance a lot of that money goes into social programs pensions salaries etc there's very little left for investment but yet we know that we're now at the point where the economy needs a substantial increase in investment if we are to hit those targets our analysis is that if there is no increase from this very low level of foreign direct investment
10:22 am
then the economy may go into a long period of around two and a half to three percent growth and that's clearly not enough we have when we talk about just investment not direct investment or maybe capital inflows is that happening are we seeing capital flowing into russia but we're seeing stock market flows coming in and we get this data on a weekly basis from from an agency in the u.s. and that does show that this year in full you investors prefer russia to the other big emerging market funds for example the last four or five weeks there has been net outflows of money from countries like brazil china and india where as russia funds have attracted money support for your vest or are betting that. things are going to change and that is a hopeful lead indicator but we still need to see a pickup in foreign direct investment and frankly we really don't expect to see that at laughter the election i think the second half two thousand and twelve is a more realistic target in two thousand and eleven and maybe doubt in two thousand
10:23 am
and thirteen so investors are looking for kind of stability are they looking for reduced risks what are the looking for well they're looking to seated russia really is at the point of change headed willed serious about improving the investment climate of tackling some of the the headline issues that we read about every day such as corruption redrafting some of the legislation and administrative rules that actually block investment and generally just improving investment climate you know legal protections legal redress that cetera so we're at this point now i think that investors are certainly more willing to give russia the benefit of the doubt we certainly see from our side that there are substantially large number of companies doing due diligence on russia looking at russia but still they have a wish list of things they want to see change you know such as dealing with corruption and legal protections and if those those issues are dealt with there or do see real improvement over the next here year and a half then i think we'll see the investment capital coming in but i really don't
10:24 am
think that we're going to see it you know this year i think people will want to see these issues addressed and joining at the end of this year i think will be a very significant milestone in the efforts to attract more foreign investment was of course a very long running process well we've seen a few weeks ago when was saying that russia needs seven to ten percent of increase in investment every year to keep economy grow do you think that's realistic and how important is the privatization program in that respect it is realistic if russia deals with this you know wish list that i mentioned i mean it's it's very sort of clear cut i think right now investors are certainly interested in russia but only if some of these. significant barriers are removed such as corruption and legal protections and if the are there we certainly realistically can see that level of investment increase we are of course coming from a very low level of investment so even that you know seven ten percent growth from this low level is very achievable and better but only if the investment climate is
10:25 am
improved privatisation is a big part of that we've already seen course the first of those d.t.p. sales what do you make of that well it came to be fair it came at a bad time clearly was it was a struggle the price obviously came down to you know to the level it was done from where we do trading but it is fair to say today a lot of that price reduction was because of the trend in global emerging markets this year emerging markets are very much you know how to favor as it were having a good year so it was a difficult time we certainly think that the appetite for the next two which should be federal great in spirit will be a lot better hopefully the markets will allow that as well all right thank you so much chris weaver chief strategist talking to us on the business. take a look at the markets as we have the time barely any movement in the united states no important reports actually expected out today investors are under twenty finance
