10:00 am
country a lot of wrath is also racing throughout the region with protests and then behind and morocco maybe expert adrian. that horrible dominant group are behind the turmoil. they might be getting rid of of thirty forty or fifty euro regime but many of these countries certainly in egypt certainly in libya certainly in tunisia and back karim that might be getting themselves into just as bad or even worse trouble if they don't really understand the social proof so this is going on and we will fall the interests that may be driving them from outside of the middle east because i think this ties into a more global pattern where we have to understand the major geopolitical long term planning emanating from such organizations as the council on foreign relations the trilateral commission and the bluebird group who have for decades been fighting the arab world and have been fighting the sovereign nation state as an institution on a global basis so in
10:01 am
a way if they can get rid of these strong mad men whether it be hosni mubarak in egypt or colonel gadhafi in libya and try to transition has always seen before to a more liberal chaotic and more controllable western style democracy that would serve in a privilege to serve i think we have to be very careful about the various readings that we make of this it's very important that both the pro protesters on the one side and the government do you know when egypt whether it be in libya whether it be in a back rain or in tunisia should understand powerful social forces they are up against the psychological warfare tactics that are being used and they should not allow themselves either side to be used by interested objectives which are completely outside the the interest of libya does or the egyptians or the tunisians or the iraqis or just about any country that is having such turmoil in the middle east the president. well for wider analysis on this we can cross live to john locke
10:02 am
institute ocracy and cooperation in paris thanks for being with us this evening many are viewing this odd rest like the so-called colored revolutions in kyrgyzstan and ukraine which later led to political turmoil are we seeing history repeating itself in the middle east. you know we're seeing the. spokesman of the state department repeating themselves what i mean by that is that these events although there is there are some points of overlap with the color revolutions the main similarity between these events and the ones you mentioned are the way that they are spun the way that they are presented in the western media you know as soon as the crowd appears in a square the mainly american media tells us that there's a happy ending even before it's practically started in fact what we've seen of course certainly egypt and tunisia are concerned is that there has been an appearance of change that has supposedly been a revolution people have been out in the streets but in fact of course they're back
10:03 am
to square one or indeed back to square zero because of course the army is in control of the news in egypt while the old guard has kept control in tunisia so no i think that there are definitely points of overlap certainly the technicians of regime change who were active in the color revolutions i'm talking about the serbian group poor i'm talking about the disciples of the american. political scientist jean sharp these people have been active on the streets of cairo and elsewhere but i think the comparison really is greater with the events of nine hundred eighty nine in eastern europe those events were also partly managed and there was a certain amount of control but they were they have this in common with what's happening now in the middle east that there was a certain domino effect the color revolutions did not produce any domino effect there was too much time in between each of them whereas here in the middle east we're seeing a rapid succession of events which to some extent recalls as i say what happened in
10:04 am
eastern europe in one thousand nine hundred nine how much managing do you think is going on i'd like to talk a little bit more about that driving force that many critics say is coming from abroad. well there's no doubt that a lot of the as i say technicians of regime change have been active i've mentioned this serbian group or i've mentioned gene sharp gene sharp as an american political scientist to written what many consider to be the bible of nonviolent regime change and we know that these people have been active and i'm no doubt that their influence has been very considerable after all although of course they are officially non-governmental organizations organizations like got poor are in fact one hundred percent funded by the american state and in the case of egypt and as in the case of the other countries the interest of the united states is to preserve is
10:05 am
to present the appearance of change while maintaining political control that is what the americans are about revolution to legitimize a continuation of. the status quo effectively you may remember in the great novel and film the leopard there's the famous saying everything must change so that everything stays the same and that's really the motto of the americans in these situations they're trying to keep a lid on the situation in the middle east they're trying to legitimize new versions of the old regime. but of course that's not to say that there are no social pressures autonomous social pressures themselves there are of course considerable pressure pressures in these countries now you've already mentioned the u.s. state department they of course set up a brand new twitter account in farsi and time out in from support of anti-government protesters in iran while remaining quiet about those taking place in such and such countries as yemen do you think this is hypocritical.
10:06 am
well of course it's hypocritical i mean the american double standards in the middle east are so breathtaking that. one doesn't really know what to say i mean let's start with the most obvious example saudi arabia the biggest strongest richest ally of the united states in the middle east except for israel is saudi arabia now saudi arabia doesn't even profess democracy it doesn't have a single ounce of democracy in its constitution or in its political practice it practice is instead completely monarchical. with various quite considerable human rights violations to boot including of course an equal rights for women and no freedom of religion so and yet that country is always cited as the as you know as the americans great solo which of course it is the american simply turned a blind eye blind eye to the nature of the regime there so the double standards between iran and yemen are absolutely obvious. but there is another aspect of
10:07 am
these double standards which is important to mention and that is the flirtation with the forces of islam it's important to understand as we discuss the relationship between authoritarian regimes often military backed in the middle east on the one hand and the forces of political islam on the other it's important to understand that the americans are capable of playing both sides of that game of course they provide preferred like anybody they prefer stability they prefer leaders who can control their territories and who remain faithful to their foreign policy but equally there is a long history of american and indeed before that british friendship with political islam and friendship with political islam because political islam undermines the national principle in arab states so what we see i think these events unfold is the western powers and america in general in particular trying to play on as
10:08 am
many different sides of the equation as possible how do you think the political map in the middle east could change as a result. well we don't know yet i mean as i've said several times right now there is no change there is a lot of tension there are people being killed there are people on the streets and so on but there isn't actually any change right now the army has reasserted control over egypt control which it never lost by the way because all egypt's president. army generals much is in israel. is the same the old guard has carried on power in power there even know even though of course the president himself has left. we don't exactly know it's quite possible that in fact things will remain roughly as they are but on the other hand all in spite of all that one can say about the attempt to manipulate these revolutions and that manipulation is extremely
10:09 am
interesting nonetheless these are countries which are indeed ready to explode there are huge but obviously social tensions there are huge demographic tensions there are large numbers of young men with little else to do than to demonstrate so quite clearly the situation is very feeble all of these countries and that's why ultimately it would be foolish i think to predict exactly what's going to happen next right john laughlin from the institute of democracy and cooperation in paris thanks for your analysis this hour well major powers are proposing more financial assistance to north african countries amid the wave of results revolts i should say in the region but artie's financial guru max kaiser has dismissed the idea saying the union doesn't have the money to help its own members let alone nations outside the block. they can print more money but as they print money it drives the cost of food on the futures market precious metals higher they're just exacerbating the problem because they have no actual physical cash they just print
10:10 am
feet out debt which makes the price of food go higher so the first thing the e.u. could do is shut up and not do a thing because they're just making the situation worse fate there are completely corrupt they have absolutely no ability to assist whatsoever because they have no money and they keep printing fake money which is driving the price of food higher which is causing more revolution. and coming up in our debate show cross talk next hour peter lavelle and his gas discuss why countries in the middle east spend so much on military and how the u.s. justifies its big business in the region. to me partner somewhat comparable to a singapore switzerland their small populations they want people to know they have weapons to be racially want to be left alone saudi arabia does have some incursions into yemen and he's using it charnock it purchased from the us in other states so i'm not sure about that but not a missile or one could of course discuss the proper method but to say that they're
10:11 am
not using it at all i think it would be a question. another story developing in the middle east to iranian warships are to pass through egypt suez canal on tuesday it will be the first time iranian naval vessels have sell those waters since the country's one thousand nine hundred seventy nine islamic revolution investors had been due to enter the canal on monday but their passage has been delayed steps are heading to syria for a training mission israel and the u.s. have expressed strong concern over the moon saying it escalates already high tensions in the region are these polls leaders following developments in tel aviv. this many prime minister benjamin netanyahu says that he views with most gravity the posturing of these two iranian warships through the suez canal to the
10:12 am
mediterranean sea he says that it's really an attempt by tel rand to take advantage of the current situation to exploited and to extend its regional influence we also heard from the israeli foreign minister avigdor lieberman and he says that this is nothing short of publication israel and iran have not had diplomatic relations for the past thirty years and israel is concerned that iran is sending weapons to its neighbors that will. ultimately be used against the jewish state israeli soon relations are strained israel convinced an israeli official saying as much over the past few years that iran is supplying weapons to syria that ultimately land up in the hands of his but in lebanon now the united states is adding fuel to the whole situation the u.s. state department recently set up a twitter account and it is using their twitter account to post tweets in flossy that supports anti iranian government demonstrators out on the streets of tehran we haven't seen the u.s.
10:13 am
state department do anything like that supporting or even expressing any kind of opinion on the same kind of demonstrations that are happening in yemen since nine hundred seventy nine since the iranian revolution they have been no iranian warships that have actually passed through the suez canal this is the first major diplomatic headache for the egyptian interim government for the ruling military council as you well know president mubarak had a close relationship with the united states he was an ally of the u.s. and at the same time relations between him and the rand were strained for the past thirty years it is not clear exactly why they gave permission we haven't had any insight on that but what we have been told reported is that it took in officials have checked the cargo they are confident that there is nothing suspicious on board and as a result they have allowed there for gate on the supply ship to go through. jewish communities demanding compensation from the government for property stolen by the nazis during the second world war but many believe the case is likely to be
10:14 am
rejected in the contra work force as liberators soviet occupation peter all over reports from the baltic states. thousands of law being jews were robbed of their property money and in many cases their lives by nazi troops one of the major issues is how much on the side of nazi germany viewed today so really. unfortunately many believe the lothian waffen s.s. who fought against the bolsheviks were liberators or but they in fact were bandits and robbers they have seen documents listing real estate that belong to jews killed in ghettos i think their property should be returned the amount of reparations claimed by latvian jews around sixty five million dollars the country's government says that they will continue to hold talks with religious leaders in order to come up with a solution however those in power draw their support from nationalist groups who are far less diplomatic when it comes to the issue of the lottery and administration is not responsible for the night you doing and the holocaust began
10:15 am
our country was under it your patient by definition lied to me and i thought at least cannot be responsible for actions of occupants local jewish leaders say that they only want what was stolen to be returned however they realize that this may be difficult with current attitudes in latvia while they wish we knew the property to solve our social problems and develop education culture if it meant say no synagogues and cemeteries of course it's hard to find ours when you need to take back certain property but i hope people will understand and justice will be done a short distance from the capital is the forest where thousands of jews were executed it serves as a poignant memorial to those who lost their lives but in central riga there are equally chilling monuments to the holocaust like this synagogue which was burned to the ground with worshipers still inside over sixty five years after the end of the second world war the burnt out shell of this synagogue serves as
10:16 am
a reminder to the tensions that still bubble between the local jewish community and those latvians that consider the s.s. troops to be in heroes while the government continues to draw most of its support from nationalist organizations a resolution for this conflict seems a long way off peter oliver r.t. riga latvia. all the stories we're covering plus once more is always available for you at our dot com let's run you through a selection of what's online today to cover why and twenty million dollar fleet of yobs belonging to self exiled russian tycoon bodies that are of all ski has been seized in france. and the spy in the sky former russian agent out of chapman's turning her attention to the cosmic catwalk and plans to add some glamour to the country's space industry the details are teen dot com.

hi welcome to business this hour of thanks for joining me and we go straight to our top story this hour gas from shares have been rising on monday as russia's biggest company laid out its plans for the future to a round table of analysts c.e.o. alex miller rejected calls to sell more gas to european customers on the spot market he talked about the benefits of a merger with enough to gas ukraine and gave an update on pipeline developments now for more i'm joined by our correspondent three no poor. thanks for joining the program so what's the position of gas problem concerning those spot prices. well as you just mentioned there have been requests from aio on route to gazprom to renegotiate its one term supply contracts and base the price of those contracts on the spot price instead of oil price. as gazprom forms its contracts right now gas promise so far denied those requests saying that we may have received them but
10:23 am
they are very firm in their price formulating process and they're not willing to reconsider that process as of now of course. eon has so far declined to give any details of those negotiations saying that talks with gazprom officials still continue and they are of course hoping that the deal might swing their way of course gas and its european continent. forms its european contract prices based on the price of oil but that formulation and that process of formulating prices has recently been under scrutiny when the prices for crude oil peaked at over one hundred forty dollars a barrel in two thousand and eight and that has led many european companies to attempt to renegotiate its contract wright says with gazprom. now gazprom c.e.o. alex and mo also talked about the potential merger with nuff to gus what he see as the potential benefits for ukraine. there are
10:24 am
a lot of benefits on the table according to gazprom c.e.o. alexei miller he told the press that should nafta gas decide to merge with gazprom there will be a lot of benefits for the iranian side not only for its gas industry of course is energy industry but also for the country's economy as a whole not only would gazprom maximize the a utilization of pipelines currently running through ukraine lifting up the volume of gas that passes through them to over twenty five billion cubic tonnes but also a nafta gas of ukraine would receive very beneficial prices they would be receiving the same prices that it currently exists on the russian domestic market so of course a lot of potential benefits for nafta gas should it decide to merge with ukraine alexy miller also said that the potential merger would not affect its existing plans for the south pipeline which of course would be delivering gas to europe
10:25 am
bypassing the existing ukrainian pipelines and that project according to the gas from c.e.o. is still on schedule and is considered a a is. set to launch in twenty fifteen of course all of this information comes as the rival pipeline to gazprom the european sponsored project in a book called takes another hit with its costs increased almost twice from eight billion dollars to around nineteen so all in all it does seem like a pretty good day for gastro. ok thanks very much katrina's are reporting on gas promising future plans here in moscow thanks very much and let's move on yandex is planning to place an initial public offering worth up to one billion dollars this summer russia's leading internet search engine has hired a bank and morgan stanley as underwriters for the i.p.o. and plans to trade on nasdaq stock exchange the search engines offering could become one of the largest companies in two thousand and eleven and would surpass
10:26 am
mail dot ru nine hundred twelve million dollars i.p.o. last november you have x. which recently landed in the top fifteen most innovative companies previously plan to issue shares back in two thousand and eight but halted its plans to tour the crisis. now is have a look at the market could see slump point three percent in midday trading in london with banks among the top movers shares of barclays up one point seven percent of those aboard bank of scotland good point seven percent investors are not making any big moves nervous about tensions spreading across the middle east and. here in russia the equity markets are posting gains on monday will continue to rise to to the political upheavals in the middle east and this is helping to push energy shares a little higher what may keep the indices higher is like a musical in the u.s. of the american markets are closed on monday for presidents' day. that's all we have time for in this edition of business our team but join me in less than one
