the biggest issues good voice face to face with the news makers. welcome below the show where you get the real headlines with none of the mercy if you live in washington d.c. now today wiki leaks founder julian assange which got the news that he would be extradited to sweden where he could face trial for sexual assault charges so discuss his rise and fall and the impact that his website has created on the rest of the world kevin zeese will join me to discuss those details and as the unrest continues in the middle east and northern africa the u.s. fears that we need to be affected by oil prices already the cost of oil has increased dramatically and we can't help but wonder if the threats of higher gas

prices over new the discussion about our reliance on foreign oil foreign policy steve levine will give us his input next rolling stones michael hastings is out of the get he released a new story about the u.s. military this time reporting that the army psychologically manipulated visiting politicians into providing more funding for the war efforts now as you can imagine the article is already having a lot of people up in arms but we can't help but wonder how many other people have also been victims of this practice we'll speak with lieutenant colonel anthony shaffer and journalists are finding it difficult to return to the u.s. after they've been traveling abroad they say that their elec tronic devices are take it and scanned before they can really enter the country but is this a blatant violation of the first or fourth amendments a.c.l.u. lawyer catherine crump away on the issue and we'll tell you how one hacker is taking on sony george hotz successfully hacked into sony's game system playstation three and i was asking for donations from the public to support its cause. but i
11:05 pm
want to know what exactly is his cause we'll ask that question at the end of the shell but now let's move on to our top story. score a win for sweden a british judge ruled today that wiki leaks founder julian assange should be extradited to sweden for questioning and possible trial on charges of sexual assault the judge ruled in favor of a swedish prosecutor's request that a songe be handed over and so that it was valid and reasonable for their investigation into allegations that he sexually abused two women last august now songe has repeatedly denied these accusations his lawyers have seven days to appeal this decision and they've already said that they will always means that the case could probably drag on for at least another month and julian assange has been in the international spotlight for months since his whistle blowing web site released thousands of u.s. government documents all the wars in iraq and afghanistan as well as state department cables and assad's claims of the allegations against him are part of
11:06 pm
a politically motivated smear campaign he claims the extraditing him to sweden would eventually lead to him being sent to the united states or government prosecutors have been working very hard to build a criminal case against him possibly with espionage charges and the allegations against assad stem from separate encounters with two women in stockholm last summer they claim that he refused to wear a condom during sex despite their requests and under sweden's strict laws on sexual assault those allegations amount to mala station and a form of rape and they could carry a prison sentence of several years saw it was acknowledged having sex with these women but says it was consensual but for now he remains in the london area staying at a supporters as state and wearing an electronic monitor a sign just said that the work of wiki leaks will continue despite all of his legal troubles. now it's just last april when a songe first stepped into the spotlight and one of his first interviews was right here in our studio where he debuted the collateral murder video of u.s.

soldiers who opened fire on civilians in iraq are to scale and four takes us through the rise and fall of wiki leaks founder julian assange. when julian assange emerged less than a year ago with this video. showing u.s. troops gunning down unarmed civilians and two reuters journalists videogame style he was lauded as a hero of transparency. and anti-war ally a human rights defender r.t. america interview decides on the day of collateral murders release and what keeps people on earth and more people in management of a civilization going to understand how the world actually works. in the fourth estate is to get information out about the real world and the second step is to comment on it and to think about it but we need sources can't get. through to the
11:08 pm
information out to the public a nomadic computer expert with the cache of two hundred fifty thousand classified cables assigned catapulted to the front page of virtually every newspaper in the country with a week's wiki leaks wiki leaks wiki leaks wiki leaks to his foes julian assange is a cyber terrorist and war time he's guilty of sabotage espionage crimes against humanity he should be killed but to his fans a soft spoken activist with the potential to radically reshape the geo political landscape voted by the people as time's man of the year but our commitment to our sources is not just to protect them and we've never lost a soul it's not just to publish the material it is to get the maximum political impact possible but it's our commitment today it's the pooh. little impact of the leaker and not the leaks that has gripped have money. allegations of sexual misconduct by two swedish women infighting within wiki leaks frozen bank accounts

stalled donations particularly in the obama administration in the cia they want to stop wiki leaks they're doing all sorts of extraordinary actions stop in pay pal or lean on pay pal master card and other private corporations to allow donations to be made to wiki leaks the ones heroic figure now hawking mugs bumper stickers and t. shirts to pay his legal bills who profits from demeaning demeaning truly of us obviously it's the u.s. government which is really hard to get get him makes no bones about it then under the bus by the newspaper that once eagerly used his leaks initial impressions of julian assange. set up some red flags some analysts say assigned and wiki leaks have been effectively neutralized consumed by litigation rather than leaks i think what the american government wants is to have mr songe in custody so that ultimately he can be extradited to the united states to face charges for the
11:10 pm
release of those documents you can't court rule that julian assange should be extradited to sweden but his attorneys say the next stop for the thirty nine year old computer programmer could be here in the united states where science could face espionage charges and even the death penalty as a songe faces jail time the future of wiki leaks hangs in the balance and its ability to be a place for whistleblowers and it beacon of transparency and ford r.t. washington d.c. . so how do we describe this last year in the life of chilean aside his catapult of fame perhaps infamy and as we watch on rest unfold across north africa and the middle east brutal regimes been taken down by their own people not the american government that's improv in them up we have to wonder where our priorities lie why one man has been. the biggest enemy of the state well here to discuss with me is kevin zeese executive director and co-founder of voters for peace kevin thanks so much for being here things i mean i'll let start you know i was just saying that it
11:11 pm
was last april when join us on she came into our studio after releasing their collateral murder video and there was a whole thing went out with little fanfare none of the media really paid attention and while well has that changed in less than a year when i think the turning point was or you know what was the leak that really sparked off this now international manhunt well there were three major leagues there was the iraq war diary the afghan war diary and then the diplomatic cables diplomatic cables really struck a gold mine of affecting really every country that does business to the united states the u.s. is the largest empire in world history with eleven hundred military bases around the world were involved in many countries sort of affected lots of countries and you can see what's happening now in north africa and the middle east the arab world in revolt and every one of those countries wiki leaks has played a role not that they're the cause but they provide information to manage i get a difference tunisia bring out the corruption of the regime mubarak same kind of
11:12 pm
thing and then when we try to replace mubarak with superman hillary clinton saying soon as our man wiki leaks puts out documents that show that that was israel's man for a long time it was us his man for a long time he was involved in torture was involved and also all sorts of dealings that would be unacceptable to the democracy movement in egypt so he got knocked out of picture by wiki leaks and information so we do exist think in the last few years it's been around for four years now but the last year it has really become the forefront of what i call the democratization of media and there is a market ization that there's a number of things first of all that gives more people the power to give information to the media anonymously without their dimino gives more people power to distribute that information not just the corporate out. that's and it gives more power to people want to know what's going on with their government so it's democratized the across the board so a major impact it's a big threat to every government including the united states but so much of this
11:13 pm
attention has been paid not to the material coming out of what wiki leaks is necessarily releasing least if you watch the media it's all you know surrounding this one man and you can say that even before you know these sexual allegations charges came up in sweden at the focus was on julian a songe himself do you think that that's hurt the cause a little bit well it's hard to her it's really hard choices you need of a voice for the media outlet is a voice you heard a great voice for russia today for example you very much need to have a voice that's telling the story and so you could have anonymous approach as one organization that is called anonymous but having a songe as you're supposed person is a very effective spokesperson the sex charges in sweden is a big problem but he is an effective spokesman gets his message out very clearly i think having him there actually is a positive but you don't want he's made it very clear it's not all about him he goes gets arrested is unable to operate wiki leaks will continue but you know ever he is a very expect effect of spokesperson like you're saying despite the fact that this is about waking leaks in particular the u.s.
11:14 pm
government is on a manhunt for julian a son just to get this one guy and you know we go back to you were just talking about the unrest in the middle east and i we look at all of these dictators these regimes that the u.s. has worked with has cozied up to for one reason or another you know be it to protect israel for oil resources and why is he why is he the number one enemy well he's just out there visibly is there a lot of damaging information out i feel more sorry for bradley manning the private who's accused of leaking the documents where he weeks he's been held in solitary confinement now for eight months i mean the bradley manning support network. by the way you mentioned the bradley manning support network was shut down by pay pal again to the short term appeal but we still can make donations to visa master card etc but so it's not we can still raise money at least we raise a lot money for his defense but he's the guy who really is. in the difficult spot and what's interesting is that even by putting him under such strict conditions they have not broken him to tell lies they would enable link manning to wiki leaks manning to his signage and so where they can post social prosecution over not i
11:15 pm
don't know it's a very important for people who supported science to get active running it we have a project called wiki leaks is democracy i described how he's democratizing media we can he says democracy dot org is trying to convince the federal government to stop this idea of prosecution if they prosecutor songe it will be the john peters in your case of the twenty first century will define media and it's too late for the government have lost the war there are so many new anonymous ways to give information al-jazeera has one they released the palestine papers a dream for a new york times about one and there's one the one that matters times developing well above normal or not and more than one more important is the one coming out of cuny graduate school in journalism local leaks which will go to for two hundred news outlets you can anonymously give information to fourteen hundred news hour as united states they have lost the democracy war the federal government it's going to it's a ryall that right considering the fact that there are so many other websites springing up are you still surprised a little bit that we see organizations like the new york times who used wiki leaks
11:16 pm
for the material and then turned on them you know the corporations like like i mentioned pay pal or visa and master card that so many of them i suppose it all goes because we are a corporate state in the united states the corporate corporate government is the reality in new york times are that they are for a long time put out the government feel they put out the lies about weapons of mass destruction on their front page they helped to get us into a war we should have gone into they've done that on multiple occasions they did just last week of pakistan with the blackwater agent who was working for the cia obama's up there saying he's our diplomat diplomatic immunity the new york times knew that he was working for the cia and didn't say a thing happen you trust them and so the you know as the democratization of media happens and you see the traditional media faltering losing readership losing circulation losing advertising the democratization. i mean the new york times you have to evolve and to become a real newspaper again or it's going to be losing its voice you know whatever happens to a science there definitely are there's a movie or sense it was very you know kevin thanks so much for being here and you
11:17 pm
very much now so to come on tonight show unrest in the middle east and north africa send all prices higher what i mean for the u.s. which consumes a quarter of the world's oil production and printing and at the top military officer in the u.s. army order storage or soldiers to manipulate a visiting american politicians also if the army would get more funding and troops for the war in afghanistan that's a claim being made in rolling stone or discuss it with lieutenant colonel anthony shaffer and. bringing you the latest science. from the realm. of the future of our very. wealthy british colony it's time to. go. to. market why not.
11:18 pm
find out what's really happening to the global economy there's a report on our team. as unrest in the middle east and north africa continues panic isn't suing over rising oil prices oil talk one hundred dollars a barrel for the first time since the financial crash in two thousand and eight we're already hearing predictions of gas prices rising to four dollars a gallon in the coming months now libya the eighteenth the largest oil producer in the world is in chaos coffee is reportedly threaten to blow up energy pipelines reports are also saying that libya has already shut down twenty five percent of its production now despite promises from saudi arabia that they can cover libya slack and prevent any kind of a shortage the fear of unrest spreading to the saudis. it was on everyone's mind and all the numbers and the result of panic and speculation what kind of a reality will that mean for the average american and could take the u.s. government's attention away from the budget showdown and into
11:19 pm
a discussion about ending a reliance on foreign oil joining me to discuss it is dave a van contributing editor at foreign policy state thanks so much for joining us again now tell me how worried you think that we should be right now right away the situation in the middle east is vala tile especially with libya we're not sure what's going on but saudi arabia says if they can pick up that slack so should we listen to them. i think we have to listen to them we should listen to them the thing is that the saudis have to do more now than talk a lot of the volatility that we've seen the last few days have been because there's been uncertainty in the market and the saudis truly deliver what they've been saying all these years that they could and as you know king up to a little bit a scare into the market yesterday when he came home after three months of medical care and immediately laid out thirty six billion dollars in payout to his people
11:20 pm
the markets that this place is still safe why is the king laying out thirty six billion dollars so is this going to be the moment when i guess we get some proof as to whether saudi arabia really has the excess oil that they've been promising because of course there is some a debate out there as to whether they actually have the supplies. well the financial times reported today that the saudis are having lived in very close discussions with the europeans the saudis are saying that they are even asking the europeans how much do you want what type of oil do you want where do you want to deliver now that's accurate and they actually do that which i think they should that will calm the markets. a little bit but you know middle east now is so unpredictable what place is next who is next no one thinks it's going to end of year but at the end of the day if we look at rising oil prices right i mentioned
11:21 pm
they're over a hundred dollars a barrel for the first time since two thousand and eight today they fell slightly so it's all speculation right it's all just fear. their fears fear it's speculation what a roller coaster today was so the concern about cain up dula and there was an attack on a chinese will count sent or oil prices the european benchmark went up to almost one hundred twenty dollars a barrel that's huge but then later on during the day there was a little rumor that gadhafi had been shot which made traders think that everything was the turmoil was going to be over it turned out it was it was just a rumor but it shows you how much rumor is playing the uncertainty is running in terms of sending oil prices. now what we're already seeing though of course in result is the political posturing
11:22 pm
a little bit of that drill baby drill rhetoric which we're so used to here in the u.s. and i actually want to show a clip from glenn beck's program last night. let me tell you something if i were president two weeks ago i would have said drill everywhere you need a permit come on get a permit if you want people to be free and have democracy and you take out the keystone of freedom in the middle east if you take and destabilize the freedom march so the whole middle east can be on fire there's a good chance that they'll burn the oil fields and we better have a backup plan. going to get a fan with them that yeah we better have a backup plan but should not have been planned more than two weeks ago if you were to start telling people drill baby drill two weeks ago that wouldn't have solved anything do you think that this is going to bring back you know the debate in america as to how do you know get away from our reliance on foreign oil. you know this is this is not a valid. the whole thing glenn beck this is. he.
11:23 pm
he's a kook and and i think that the you know this whole thing about the drill baby drill you know the one of the smartest analysts i know says why ever i had been asked the theory of depleted america first it doesn't make any sense to to drill in every single drop that the united states has you know you drill some here you buy some from a blog that the balanced diversified diet i do think that over time the administration not only this it ministration but china and other countries have a very shrewd policy which is putting a lot of money into technologies like advanced batteries like hybrid electric cars that over time over the next decade or two are going to significantly reduce their world where fossil fuels for oil you're going to see the volatility that you're
11:24 pm
seeing today reduce significantly of course there couldn't be worth time for all of this to happen considering the state that our government is here here in the u.s. we have rumors of a government shutdown we have got to that old and you know of course some of these programs to invest in let's say electric cars or something are on the chopping block so if it actually goes anywhere but at the end of the day if the american consumer that's going to be paying the price for now the gas pump steve thanks so much for joining us. thank you aaron. now according to rolling stone a general in the u.s. army illegally ordered a team of soldiers who specialized in psychological operations to manipulate visiting american politicians and providing more funding and troops for the war in afghanistan is the latest exposé coming from michael hastings the same reporter who last year and it general stanley mcchrystal career and he calls it another runaway general in regard to lieutenant general william caldwell who's in charge of
11:25 pm
training afghan troops but according to hastings called the offer ordered and informations operations unit to provide deep analysis of pressure points to secretly manipulate lawmakers without their knowledge and even worse to have this project take priority over all other duties now keep in mind using propaganda against american citizens is in violation of u.s. law and one man tenet colonel michael holmes spoke out and was then reprimanded by military investigators but if what hastings writes is true this exposes not only a disregard for the law but also puts into question our entire war effort and it especially makes me wonder if it's not only us senators who have been manipulated we're here to discuss with me is lieutenant colonel anthony shaffer a senior fellow at the center for advanced defense studies and is also still serving as a reserve lieutenant colonel anthony thanks so much for you having there now tony tell me this i've heard a lot of different responses to this piece today some people that were just absolutely shocked and appalled and couldn't believe it and some people they were
11:26 pm
saying well done what did you think favre doing it it's so interesting the response i got the same response of facebook let me put it very bluntly in the early two thousand i ran a national level information operation should and this this topic came up i had to visit the bestial security council twice had to brief general shelton the chairman of the joint chiefs so this is no small matter and for a general to determine that he wants to use the technique is clearly from my understanding of the law and i have read the full report is illegal you cannot manipulate the congress you cannot lobby the cause. using duty resources because they were appropriate by the u.s. government and the government cannot lobby itself so the question becomes what on earth was he thinking because clearly there is this is this is this has nothing to do with an enhanced dog and pony show this is clearly meant to do something to take action this is where you have to explain to me you know what tactics exactly do these psychological operations guys use that so different from the usual you know bring a senator and you give them
11:27 pm
a nice tour you have the snap some photos i mean the entire war effort is a p.r. effort you have general david petraeus who espouses the view that it's all about what the lawmakers think not what's actually going on on the ground and it does have strains of daniel ellsberg and the shiny lawyer that was told from vietnam i think there's a lot of aspects of it now we're seeing what's wrong with this which is more wrong than just a simple p.r. campaign is that you're taking active measures and this is the key active measures you're actually trying to manipulate people now i'm i'm a case officer has been publicly disclosed your viewers should google case officer figure oh we do we manipulate people and that's different that's different than saying these are the facts these are the things i want you to look at this is what i think you ought to think about doing this is where you're trying to get deeper into someone's psyche and figure out how to manipulate that's that's where you cross the line and that's why it's the legal so when you look at the larger picture and you try to figure out what's best for a situation as soldiers do the really in my judgment is to tell the truth try to show what's going on and the lieutenant colonel you mentioned this case tried to do that and if you notice they want to after him gee i think that might have happened
11:28 pm
to nicole able danger with me your readers can get a hold like that where you do that or they don't and it is kind of interesting your google google the able danger i.g. report the same thing forty percent of the report is about them coming after me about the fact that i'm a bad guy you know that it's all about me not you know not doing the right thing well and all it was trying to do was say something a mistake was made these are the things we should do here correct and colonel holmes that was that he was wandering around in the civilian clothes he was having right fair it's really kind of petty when you think about it but so far we want to take a deep look into what we think. lieutenant general caldwell was trying to tell us by the fact that he was actually you know engaging in ordering his soldiers to do this does that mean that there is you know a lack of confidence and what's actually going on in the training the afghan troops right now if clearly if he's telling his men to stop focusing on that and start focusing on the senators then they're asking for more money they're asking for more time all right well let me let's just talk about what's in the news marjah which is a battle of marjah started
11:29 pm
a year ago almost to the day they espouse it to be the format for winning the war first thing they said and they said will take about three weeks to take care of the small hamlet took almost ten months and even now we're going back and having to redo things so when something like that happens where you set up a very high expectation and it gets knocked down over time because of results you have a hard you have a hard sell right there so with that said then we've had to slide back on a number of things we said we're going to do in the war and i think there's some level of desperation information operations is meant to be a situational awareness thing where you understand what the enemy is doing and you manipulate his ability to do things dark art my book operation dark heart was in effect a very complex form of a psychological and deception operation to throw the enemy off guard make them think that bad things are happening because of guys in their own ranks and limiting their ability to take action against us that's what information operations supposed to do in that environment but now on our own people on.
