time for tonight's tools i wore south carolina republican senator jim de mint as a previous winner here on this show and said i had he's back in the spotlight the hard core conservative was on tony perkins weekly radio program a grace first with his brilliant thoughts on the size of government in relation to god's involvement he claims the bigger government gets the smaller car gets and according to demand it's really just a simple equation like that i must say for a man who praises christ demeans notion that god's power can be limited by federal government is little bit of a surprising argument i didn't know god can so easily be diminished light increase number of bureaucrats but cement it really took it home when he made this comment take a listen. and we came. around the world because we don't have the moral of the underpinnings

that come from biblical food so i don't think are christians. should kill from this debate should be told it. crucial very good work. that it. is really stunning news that senator jim de mint's is delivering here democracy only works for christians and society can't be free unless it has moral underpinnings that come from biblical face now think progress pointed out the rather obvious today that india is the world's largest democracy a point that cement seems to forget indonesia japan turkey are also high on the list of countries with a free democracy and all four of those have a christian population of less than three percent and in the greeks come up with democracy invented yet they weren't christians either so jim de mint's argument here seems a little flawed just like most of his policies and that's why he's tonight's all time winner. the debate over climate change in this country has raged on for years

and all those on the left agree with the scientific consensus that climate change is real those on the right willfully choose not to believe facts and in fact republicans are so willing to ignore science that democrats have decided to call their bluff house republicans rejected three amendments offered by democrats on tuesday they would have called for congress to accept the scientific consensus that climate change is occurring but it's caused in large part by human activity and it's a threat to human health now all three amendments were offered during an energy and commerce committee meeting trying to block new e.p.a. legislation on climate change from happening here in the u.s. but this move wasn't unexpected as house republicans declared their crusade against the e.p.a. during last year's midterm elections so in true form no one single republican on the committee voted yes for any of those measures that's thirty one votes against

confirming climate change israel thirty one votes against science thirty one votes against the truth now while the broad consensus among scientists is the climate change is occurring in large part because of human activity republican lawmakers they just don't believe that science apparently being a politician in d.c. it makes you smarter than any scientists out there and many environmentalists and scientists say that a vote by the g.o.p. could actually be a good thing in the long run republicans are now on the record saying that climate change voting climate change is not real so you can bet this information is probably going to be used against them in future elections let's just hope the planets pistol around them. it's an emergency n.p.r. must be defunded right now at least that's what house republicans are claiming as they held an emergency meeting of the rules committee today to take up legislation that would block funding to n.p.r. all the weight of james james o'keefe hidden camera on the news organization now of

course they're painting this as a budgetary issue but you really have to wonder if in the middle of an economic crisis defunding n.p.r. is going to solve all of our problems perhaps even more telling as if this new legislation that's being drafted targets only and p.r. public broadcasting and i wouldn't just defund it for a while until maybe the economy picks back up but perhaps it's all funding from n.p.r. permanently so is this just another example of the g.o.p. the temp c d find anything that democrats might consider important earlier from our studio in new york i caught up with sam seder political host of the majority report majority f.m. radio i first asked to consider it this country is fighting two wars that were about to reach our debt limit as we watched unrest in the middle east as we watched disaster unfold in japan why is defunding n.p.r. individually an emergency. i don't know perhaps some

right wing republican lawmakers can't reach their radio dial i guess and in turn the station it's a joke i mean of course it's hilarious i mean this is a classic case of the republicans pretending to be fiscally prudent to or fiscally disciplined and they're using this is simply a way to further their cultural war that they have been waging for the past thirty years. and i know the culture war we're definitely saying pick up as a way planned parenthood suddenly got defunded too and i think they're really jumping off this recent video from james o'keefe as you know proof the n.p.r. is biased or has a liberal bias and therefore all americans shouldn't pay for it but i find it a little frustrating that republicans will use a man like james o'keefe whose entire career is based off of tricking people and a lie to show that n.p.r. is biased to you. well it's not just that he lies and he he presents himself as

someone who's not the fact is that the the video itself has been debunked by of all people glenn beck the blaze but you know i mean the bottom line is this even if you take the video as he added it there's really nothing there you know internal e-mails from n.p.r. showed that they were going to take this money all of that this video shows that some people were uncomfortable but you know far be it for me to to defend n.p.r. in the situation and p.r. themselves have taken with james o'keefe has done in the past seriously and the guy is a serial fraud so you know this is this is all just a game the republicans like to pretend that they're concerned about the deficit or they're concerned about spending the amount of money that they're talking about is is absolutely insignificant on top of that president obama already suggested the same cuts so the idea that this is an emergency in some. way where they have to get

out in front of this is just proof positive that this is just another one of their culture war shenanigans and frankly it's a joke it's a complete waste of everyone's time and you know i feel like. i mean just by this example that we're talking about i feel like this country is becoming so much more polarized and now i feel like the media you know only makes it easier for that to be that way if we look at the cable networks nine hundred eighty but today the washington post actually debuted something new on their web page when it comes to their opinion section you can now choose between the left leaning and right leaning opinion writers i mean what is this world coming to we no longer have any room for nuance we no longer have anybody they can be in the middle and not just one or the other and audiences can't make up their own minds anymore. well i mean look the country is polarized across some pretty serious issues but sadly none of them seem to get addressed by our politicians and in terms of you know the the establishment

media like the washington post they're just looking for rivals and they're trying to appeal to a wide range of people and it seems sort of ridiculous to me but i mean i have the ability to decide who is i want to read i'm not going to melt if i happen to come across an opinion that i don't appreciate it's silly it's ridiculous i mean. maybe they should just do the rest of their entire op ed page in the see if that doesn't pick up a couple more readers why i think the sad thing is that while you or i may not melt if we read an opinion that we don't like you know when it comes to other americans out there they may only read the opinions that they like they might ever even look at an opinion that they don't like i mean it really just you know falls into this one line tunnel vision way of thinking in america and you know do you think that if n.p.r. just can't be funded permanently which is why the house republicans are now. trying to eradicate have it go on for

a little while and perhaps on the economy gets better and there's going to be a point. well you know look n.p.r. gets not even two percent of their budget operating budget from the federal government so the issue to me is less about n.p.r. and more about the affiliates and the in the local funding and that's more a part of the corporation for public broadcasting so i don't think this is the end of the world if n.p.r. loses this funding i think they're going to be fine i think they may actually be on record as saying it may be easier for them to just deal with what they have to deal with without their federal funding but it really is indicative of the fact that the tea party came to power and they in the guise of the republican party and they claim that they're all about fiscal discipline when in fact these are the same culture wars we've seen for years and years these are the same people same thirty percent of people who say george bush was a great president this is the same people who have

a problem with gay marriage these are the same people who have a problem with any type of affirmative action this is all about the culture war for them and in frankly it's a waste of our government resources to actually consider this an emergency i mean there's. the it's the onion cover this story they couldn't do a better justice to i'm totally with you there i do not see it as an emergency by any means and you think that this culture war this polarization is worse than it's ever been before or a just we just happen to see so much more of it you know i mean you know the internet you know getting worse than it's ever been frankly i think it's more or less this is the road we've been on for some time you know it was eighteen or nineteen years ago that perhaps you can get up in front of the republican party and said we're involved in a culture war i think the difference is the republicans have gotten a little bit more savvy about how they present it you know like i say they've come in. and they're doing this under the guise of some type of fiscal responsibility

but like you mentioned they're going after planned parenthood they're going after n.p.r. this is there's no money to be cut there the amount of money we're talking about is incredibly insufficient significant to have no impact on our deficit so it's all a charade and you know i think the worst case scenario for republicans is someone like sarah palin who's a continuance of this of this culture war becomes their nominee in you know i think you see internally in the republican party a real attempt to to tackle way from it but they can't really escape it. i think you and i are hoping and wishing and praying that maybe sarah palin will indeed win that nomination sam thanks so much for joining. thank you so to come on tonight's show the u.s. has a history of using drones in hot spots around the world for wait until you hear where these drones are sneaking around now and during the campaign in two thousand and eight we promised the most transparent administration in white house history doesn't really delivered on as promised for the day in the shoes of small.

and a chapter can now be written about the use of drones by the u.s. you know dr drones have been flying along the us mexico border for a while keeping an eye on illegal immigrants and of course we know that they're used in pakistan and yemen for shadow wars that we wage abroad but already is from the u.s. and mexican governments are now confirming that drones are going to be used to keep tabs on drug dealers and next he number one president obama met with mexican president felipe calderon apparently they discussed using drones in a joint effort by both countries to stop or at least create a counterattack of the drug war being waged by cartels and we should note that most of the details surrounding this operation are still unknown to the public like how many flights the drones have made that are we do know that the manger on being used the air force's global hawk is an arm butterflies forty thousand feet in the air and it has a wide variety of sensors but this new agreement between the two countries also

sheds light on how both countries are expanding their efforts to take down the cartels the times is reporting that officials from the f.b.i. the cia the n.s.a. and other intelligence agencies are now working out of a building in mexico city which is being dubbed a fusion center where u.s. and mexican authorities can work together towards being drug free and i'm not really sure how this is going to work is a drone is an arm paid for happens to catch visuals of a cartel leader on the move how long until authorities can actually reach them and who gets to fly them the u.s. or the mexican officials so many questions let's shift our focus back to where i'm concerned which is the use of drones which are truly the weapon of choice these days for the u.s. and pakistan they're helping us find the enemy but they're also responsible for many civilian deaths the u.s. is also expanding the use of drones for civilian missions are flying over japan to take note of the damage from the earthquake and tsunami and the department of homeland security is now toying with the idea of using drones to prevent domestic terrorist attacks and using them within u.s.

airspace however i really doubt that i want to become a reality most americans probably have no problem with the. use of drones in other countries but somehow i doubt that they're going to be ok with those unmanned planes patrolling our skies right here at home own guess who's all gung ho when it comes to thrown our own secretary of defense robert gates he's been outspoken for years now in the u.s. air force using unmanned aircraft replacing the cold war style bomber jets and in a recent speech gates also said that he hopes that his successor will share his views on the use of drones so i guess what this latest move is just more proof of the era of drones is here to say whether they're weaponized or not get used to constant eyes in the sky. now it's become a regular topic of discussion on this program the way to washington works and in hand with hollywood making the issue of copyright infringement top priority for the government today the white house proposed major revisions to the current copyright

law asking that two items be added making the act of illegal streaming of audio and video a felony and allowing f.b.i. agents to wiretap anybody suspected of illegal streaming now the obama administration says that deficiencies that could hinder enforcement of intellectual property laws must be fixed and the twenty page document from the intellectual property enforcement coordinator he was several as elements of copyright infringement so let me point out a few key points from this proposal the document does clarify the government's stance on streaming audio and video saying infringement by streaming or via other similar technology whatever that is is a felony in appropriate circumstances and we should know that they don't really explain what those appropriate circumstances are either but they definitely want to make a point here that streaming video should be classified as a felony the document also addresses the methods that tech savvy people use when sharing media online so any software that can remove the copyright protection from

beings like d.v.d.'s is now considered illegal popular file sharing websites are mentioned in this document and foreign. sites like the pirate bay are also considered obstacles for us in forstmann efforts they also address the expansion of wiretaps by the government up until now the patriot act allowed wiretapping to investigate serious crimes charism weapons of mass destruction but now they want to add copyright and trademark infringement to that list so help who knew that people who ripped t.v. shows and music albums are as much of a threat as terrorists i have to give the white house a little credit here they're really on top of their game with this issue they actually covered all the bases when it comes to ripping media and sharing it online if only gay bay gave this much attention to other actually deserving issues we all know that hollywood is pushing its own agenda here in washington but this is getting a little bit ridiculous a felony for sharing streaming videos with other people online let's be real here

the major networks do it for their programs all the drive i want not advocating that people should steal movies or music i do not think that those people should be classified as felons or treated in the same way as terrorists so come on obama please let's get our priorities straight. speaking of happy sunshine week for those of you who weren't aware this is the week in america where we're supposed to celebrate transparency the public's right to know its own government is conducting business on its behalf and how it's doing that and today president obama was supposed to receive an award for his deep commitment to open and transparent government and that award ceremony was canceled last minute because the president's schedule but that doesn't mean he will still be honored with it at some point nonetheless does the president who promised the most transparent administration really deserve this award has he shown any deep commitment to it or has he done exactly the opposite here to discuss it with me and straight through or open

government strategists and advocate thanks so much for joining us tonight as always so let me do you think obama really deserves this award on transparency and his supposed to deep commitment to it absolutely i think he does i think he does deserve the award and i think. by presenting the president with this award it doesn't mean that you can't still hold him accountable for fulfilling the obligations to becoming the transparent administration that he committed to when he first took office so i think he's gone so far is quantifiably objectively above and beyond any president up to this point in history can you tell me what he has done because i have a nice little list of what he has not done sure it'll be fun to talk about those here in a minute too because i think you should do a lot more and i'll say that right up front but but this is a president who on the very first day in office released an open government memo that did charge each agency with the task of creating open data so that beyond for your requests and open for laws and all the different things that the raw data

could be released to the public and tasking staff it ministration heads or agency heads with making sure that that was one of their top priorities and being one of the people who has worked with those agencies and worked with those i can say that certainly has been at various points i won't say the whole time but how i'm going to go. they didn't use it actually comply so great question that's where the. where the rubber meets the road we have not seen as much action and that's where i can say the president and what he can do from the white house really can only accomplish so much at a certain point it really does have to be the people that are appointed in those agencies that have to get the job done and that's really where we've seen a lot of agencies come up short in fact i'd say almost all the agencies a couple really great efforts have been made by folks that have d.o.j. commerce you've seen some really interesting things come of the e.p.a. the department of the interior but you just overall have not seen them really get the job done yet and i think you know we're going to i'm going to just you haven't seen them get the job done yet and you know i mean we're talking about certain

right technical things are like opening up the agencies we're talking about this freedom of information act requests which they also you know had a hard time actually getting people to comply by them the national security archives just released a report earlier this week on that but then there are much larger issues if you ask me the fact that the obama administration has so often criticized the bush administration for invoking state secrets privilege is in the court room has done it many times the obama administration which promised to be the most open and transparent administration is waging a full on war against whistleblowers those are the things that people are going to remember if you ask me i'd would necessarily personally call it a full on war i do think it's unfortunate a lot of things have gone with with those specific types of you mean they're sort of looking guy before trying him when you know what i think and you know this isn't just a pragmatic or isn't it it is extremely important i'll agree with you there it is when it comes to transparency and revealing who is having influence in our government this president has used the bully pulpit of the white house and the

state of the union address actually which is never been done before to address specific detailed issues in certain cases and then really ignored others so of course they fulfilled fewer foyer requests for freedom of information act requests than the bush administration did which seems a little like an oxymoron that's you know you could always. that's a little bit like criticizing eighteen t. for not building more dial up lines right there investing in broadband and you and the reason is because four is outdated it doesn't work we've seen for thirty years it doesn't work and i'll give you some fabulous story that is great information to cover thanks to these poirot i know so you can access my a.o.l. account some of my. like we said obama hasn't received the award yet but you're saying that there's so much more that he that he can do and this is a president that i feel like he's getting awarded based on a promise is based on things that people are waiting for him to do he got a nobel peace prize before he actually spread any peace in this world and here he is was so much work to do want to show his commitment i'd like to see this

commitment and he's already being granted an award so agreed some of the things he has not done he has not pushed in congress that certain bills and laws that need to be passed to be passed the seventy two hour rule a really basic easy piece of legislation that should have been passed years and years ago was put on the floor by by a couple representatives and never pushed by pelosi never pushed by the push by the white house is something that could have helped to solve some of the problems we actually have of bills being passed without actually looking at what's in them but is this one of the problems that unfortunately these days we have to feel like we have to settle for less. good question i don't know we should never settle for less we should always hold especially our highest elected official to the highest possible standard that's why we elected him certainly the pragmatic reality is actually getting some of these things done but he has he's appointed a c.t.o. of the united states a c i o to release this information and to figure out the underlying architecture has to happen imagine imagine starting from negative ten right we kind of always assume that they're starting from zero and working up but
