5:00 pm
it's an assault against libya targets mark and missiles flying but exactly how accurate are these hits parties on the ground from tripoli with the latest. i also have stated that it is u.s. policy that the gadhafi needs to go and see each u.s. president his own war so could libya be that obama's but in the push to quote liberate the people of libya if the president forget to consult with his own voters right here at home we're going to speak with congressman dennis kucinich. and what's going on behind closed doors the u.n. security council has called an emergency meeting to discuss the developments in
5:01 pm
libya we'll have a live report on what prompted the impromptu get together. and the battle for bradley manning protesters blocked monaco marine base demanding the release of the wiki leaks whistleblower but will their cries be heard and will the pentagon listen. now the international minute military intervention in libya continues to unfold western powers you appear to have tightened their grip on libyan airspace following the latest wave of airstrikes now the ongoing bombardment in the libyan capital of tripoli comes as more forces arrive to take part in operation odyssey dawn but the united states france and the u.k. remain the principal participants among these allies artie's polis lior is in tripoli and she joins us now from there with the latest paula good evening to you
5:02 pm
now what are you seeing what have what have you seen as a solution the situation unfolded essentially before your eyes. well about half an hour ago it was a massive explosion here in the capital city of tripoli it sounded like it was coming from the south of the city i cannot see any smoke from where i'm standing at the moment but we are hearing reports of smoke in the southern parts we're also hearing reports of explosions around the compound of gadhafi now it's too soon to say exactly what has been hit but for the last thirty forty even fifty minutes there have been rounds of anti aircraft gunfire at the moment the situation is quiet but as you can well imagine it just erupts spontaneously in the skies are lit up with firing we are hearing and we did hear earlier today monday from coalition forces that they had hit one hundred and twenty four targets in all saying that this operation is a success they say that for the last two days since the coalition forces have conducted is strikes daffy's a force has been in the skies and that they have managed to stop the advancement of
5:03 pm
his ground forces at the same time though there is still fighting in three predominant cities across the country the worst of the fighting is happening in the city of misrata which is about two hundred kilometers to the east of tripoli it is the last riddle held town in the west of this country and some of the reports we're hearing from there are quite terrifying we've been told that civilians are being brought in from other areas they're being used as human shields against these airstrikes we've been told that the gadhafi soldiers have surrounded the whole city and that they stopping supplies of electricity or fuel and of water quite a crowd of critical situation sounds like now as you just said other coalition forces are reporting the fact that they have destroyed several key assets but i have to ask going to how accurate are these attacks are there any rumors or perhaps have you seen or whether they've hit an intended targets perhaps the civilian casualties in this whole effort. well the only confirmation we've had in terms of a target they've hit here in tripoli has been good at his headquarters there they
5:04 pm
struck a two story building in fact it was a three story building that was hit by two missiles and we were told that this was the command and control center of his operations we were taken there earlier today and the areas he destroyed there was a small group of protesters they shouting abuse at the international community and echoing what essentially has been gadhafi has mislead that the world has no right to interfere with internal libyan affairs but the civilian count is what people here are worried about throughout the day today and yesterday stay till a vision has been showing pictures of funerals they put the toll of just yesterday's is strikes at more than sixty seven civilians who have been killed right now they were porting under the banner of tripoli and attack so no doubt as we see more civilians die in this conflict there will be more questions being asked on the ground exactly what the international community is doing here now paula there's a difference between asking for help and actually seeing bombs rain over your head essentially what is the atmosphere like on the ground in tripoli are you afraid for
5:05 pm
your security and how are the residents reacting there. well as you can well imagine it's incredibly tense here i mean today monday was the first day that there was simply no one on the streets i have noticed this in previous days there were no cars we've had almost spontaneous demonstrations since we've been here every time we go somewhere people know that we're journalists are going to come and talk to us and tell us essentially how much they support gadhafi it's very difficult to tell how much of that is genuine support and how much of it is it seems to leave could afy pain these people which is certainly some of the rumors we've been hearing now there have been thousands of supporters who have gone to his headquarters they've gone there as a sign of support they've gone also to act as human shields and they've done the same thing in the airport and other key installations around the city what we do know is that they're asking questions such as we will all of this and we hearing from rebel groups that they are preparing to everyone's waistcoats to try and recapture some of the towns they lost with the ultimate goal of marching here on to
5:06 pm
tripoli now they are calling for international coverage international air cover while they do that and people here are saying what for just how much longer is the international community going to be involved and as they march further and further into these towns they will inevitably be more civilian deaths so as we see that civilian death tally and increase in number certainly here the sense of anger and a sense of condemnation against the international community is going to grow i just want to mention also though that the mixed reports coming from the arab league are certainly been interpreted and i jested here people here seem saying that the arab world and perhaps many others in the international community are not completely behind this operation despite the fact that they came on board and we do sense that they're kind of criticism will grow as these coalition airstrikes continue looks like a changing situation on the ground please stay safe for us we do look forward to more of your reports thank you so much. president barack obama defended his administration's approach to the libyan crisis today and for sizing that hey it was
5:07 pm
an international mission and that other countries are going to be taking over in just a matter of days now optimistic words from an optimistic president joining me to make sense of all this is independent journalist and war correspondent he harmison ok thank you so much for being here now you heard what the president had to say so is all the hand-wringing about another protracted conflict a waste of time when obama said we're almost done right it's interesting that he says that it's immediately going to transfer over to the other foods when it was supposed to be an international coalition that we would support and also he says at the end of the first paragraph of one of the speeches that he gave to relieve the burden on the u.s. military and the nation's taxpayers it would be shifted to an international coalition this is such nonsense if he cared about americans taxpayers who are funding all of these wars he would take some serious steps not to be involved in these kind of things and i love how they just pick and choose when to emphasize that international part of it and when not to i mean if you look at libya i mean this is a country that most americans probably couldn't place on
5:08 pm
a map even if you had it labeled so why do you think we choose this so-called just cause and not the myriad of other oppressed countries that we typically ignore. kind of is an easy target first of all the media is now saying any administration is saying that there's too less than two percent of the world's oil comes out of libya this is nonsense maybe as a significant oil producing with massive concessions across the country and it involves italy france united states and britain will boil operations big oil in there and eat it up is an easy target it's easy to take him at this point because they knew that he was weak and was weak because he had militias that supported him and he had that if you had allowed these and the coalition had allowed these rebels to generate a movement against gadhafi which included a pro a very nationalist popular uprising component and then once could now be rolled against these other forces these rebel forces to justify taking it out the out by having already convinced the american public for the last forty years they cannot
5:09 pm
be as the number one terrorist when as you were pointing out why libya when you've got nassif terrorist countries being run by terrorists we're workroom and always including president yoweri museveni in uganda and president talking in rwanda so the argument that obama made that this is a work we're warlord run running a country is just nonsense well i think i i don't really buy the whole war for oil argument because if you look at what happened for what iraq for example i mean i think even the most hardened neo con can see that that whole invading a country for the resources just doesn't work on and it takes you know the pottery barn rule right you break it you pay for it by the time you actually get the operations up and running you don't really have very much to make money off i don't know if i have if i really buy that so what is it lucy do you think that it's about selling defense weapons or testing new weapons in the united states army or they get all the what is called the tough f. twenty two they haven't seen anything about those being deployed they are definitely testing new weapons at this very moment this is just another american on
5:10 pm
illegal. this cleared it to adventure checking people in and calling it humanitarian and just a sign on the bases that supposedly it's humanitarian it's for the best of the world but really it's about seizing control of libya and making sure that any popular uprising in libya is limited and it seems only advancing our interests oil defense you really i'm all in libya these are big mineral concessions and feel you know what the two words mean frequently here from the ministration is the whole limited intervention of supposed to be a limit intervention right but i've read some analysts calling the whole concept of a limited intervention to being akin to a gateway drug for expanded conflict and if you do go through history and almost all of the multilateral interventions of recent times from korea to somalia to virtually every single case there were multiple un resolutions authorizing even greater and greater military involvement in the conflict so can we expect that this
5:11 pm
is also going to turn out into another drawn out war or do you think that this will be limited as a client. so hard to say lucy could be quick it could be rich it could be the plane isn't always as ninja just go in there sending out hundred ten tomahawks in the first set of bombing sorties and bunch of planes and here's a massive damage and then pull back and say ok let's clear it up france look clean it up italy let's clean it up korea let's clean it up oh no sorry we can't use japan anymore so that made it clear and it may have been exactly if there is anything that's this is to say. sorry sir it may be that there's going to be a protracted conflict here which is also what's in the that's what the united states wants another protracted conflict and one hand obama saying well we're not we don't really have the capacity to get into this we just have to make some strikes and for that humanitarian purposes we don't want to charge american taxpayers too much money anyway and put one on them so to strike here and there and we'll be out quick that's what we do we have been in the past for example grenada panama two fairly quick operations that we not they're not killed off anybody who
5:12 pm
would say anything to get in like in and took control of the country and at the same time we don't know it could be short it can be known it's hard to say if algeria gets involved in egypt has involved if some of the arab league countries get involved and it's interesting to look at who they are because some of them are very much in the american can't like somalia and job to job but he has one of the america's biggest bases of covert operations in joe booty so it's very interesting to look at the so-called arab league and their position first go ahead we support humanitarian intervention and then wait a minute what did we get involved in and say what did you guys think you were signing up for hey right play that you know you mentioned some of the previous conflicts spread out and some other side you want to get a little bit into the history of historical context here of course the actual libya may have been a surprise to some americans who may have voted for obama thinking that i don't know he's going to pull us out of the previous worst well turns out that waging war has been almost a rite of passage for the last few us presidents quitting preval takes
5:13 pm
a look back at the history of much thank you. becomes the president united states it's become an unspoken a dent into the job description i become president of the united states. declare war my fellow americans my fellow citizens for president ronald reagan in one thousand nine hundred six a familiar attack on a familiar enemy despite our repeated warnings gadhafi continued his reckless policy of intimidation is relentless pursuit of terror he counted on america to be passive he counted wrong turns out so did saddam hussein yes two hours ago allied air forces began an attack on military targets in iraq in kuwait for his successor president clinton and the target was slobodan milosevic today our armed forces joined our nato allies in air strikes against saudi forces responsible for the brutality in kosovo president george w.
5:14 pm
bush said it was weapons of mass destruction that threaten the world and invaded iraq in what was supposed to be quick and live in it campaign on my worst coalition forces and began striking selected targets some military importance undermine saddam hussein's ability to wage war most thought it would end there with president obama running on an anti-war platform he has spent most of his presidency trying to end the wars started by his predecessor until now the u.n. security council passed a strong resolution that demands an end to the violence against its. it authorized the use of force in the timeline of recent history there have been some glaring similarities when it comes to the use of force by u.s. presidents none have been in response to a military attack or even threat of an attack on u.s. soil none have ever been formally declared wars we had to protect thousands of innocent people in kosovo from
5:15 pm
a mounting military offensive we are determined to knock out satam hussein's nuclear bomb potential we will also destroy his chemical weapons facilities self defense is not only our right it is our duty the definition of duty often changing the result eerily carol thank you god bless you. god. thank you very much christine our team. her there i mean do you think that the united states is ever going to get tired of being essentially the world's policeman it was very funny it's important to note that this is propaganda because there's speechwriters and there's no intention obama of the war on the so called into work platform and immediately increased the troop strength troop strength in afghanistan and and there's no intent to pull out of iraq that's nonsense and remember president kennedy was assassinated because he scaled back our aggression he started to talk about he started talking khrushchev about you know
5:16 pm
the missile crisis being one of the escalate the war in the world and he was assassinated because of that and because he was drawn to pull troops out of vietnam and every president before me before and maybe after and had it for a war agenda it's unclear to me are you twenty what do you think it is i mean get these guys come in with the best intentions and maybe some of like the older hands in the pentagon or whatever you know quickly erase their idealistic views thirty and think that there's something more sinister going on. i don't know if you call nationalism american national some sinister but a lot of people in the world who suffer because of it would say that there's more but what's really important to think about is the wars that have happened that people don't even know about like us invasion of uganda nine hundred eighty five us invasion of rwanda in one thousand nine hundred ninety four the u.s. invasion of the congo from one thousand nine hundred sixty so the present game involving africa involving military this is about weapons sales and the corporations that want to sell weapons need to have a market in order to have
5:17 pm
a market you have to create a war in order to have suffering in order to have humanitarian organizations you have to have a market so for suffering we have to care and save the children and all of this big business that comes with our war making and we'll be sending in save the children in care and doctors without borders most likely into libya unless we somehow are not able to take control of the country which seems very unlikely well unfortunately a pretty pessimistic outlook but i can't quite like contradict it there i was working respondent keith harman. taking now days after the united nations passed a resolution greenlighting airstrikes and military attacks against moammar gadhafi libyan officials are now requesting an emergency meeting with the u.n. security council and council members didn't meet behind closed doors they met about an hour ago to discuss the request of the libyan officials and artie's marina part i is just blocks away from that where the u.n. meeting took place and joins us for more. hi marina any more developments since we last spoke with do we have
5:18 pm
a clear understanding of what exactly prompted this meeting. well this is what prompted this meeting is that the libyan foreign minister sent a letter to the security council officially requesting an emergency meeting with security council members to discuss what he called the military aggression that the libyan foreign and foreign minister says is being carried out by the u.s. and france against his country according to the letter the libyan foreign minister says that the coalition forces ever since they began their air strikes against libya have been targeting their many civilian locations locations where civilians according to the libyan foreign minister have been injured and were killed libyan officials say that the security council when it did the no fly resolution over libya last week paved the way for military aggression against libya and as we as you mentioned libyan officials now want to have
5:19 pm
a direct emergency meeting with the security council what is being reported is that the security council has wrapped up its closed door consultations meetings among themselves discussing what they can do with respect to this request and according to what's being reported we haven't been able to confirm yet the security council has scheduled another meeting for thursday with respect to this respect with this request coming from libya the story still developing but obviously officials in libya want to want to go through diplomatic avenues to try to halt what they call military aggression and a bombing campaign against their country i mean it doesn't look like there's any countries out there there are maybe rallying to libya's side i mean of course it's not a surprise that the libyans are are calling for you know to look with fresh eyes at the situation but it's a look like anyone in the community is perhaps trying to come to their defense here . lucy we have to remember that when this resolution was adopted last week five
5:20 pm
countries abstained did not vote on it and that was the per country brazil russia india china and germany their pensions so all allowed this military intervention to go through but we have heard several criticisms from both russia and china saying that he's quote the coalition forces that have been striking libyan areas through the air and sea have been way too aggressive and it has been somewhat of an unprecedented attack quick attack that may and may in a fact ignite more violence then than turn down the violence may cause more conflict and even heard the secretary general of the arab league say that the actions being carried out by u.s. and western allies right now are not in conjunction with what the aim of this resolution intended. that this resolution was supposed to protect
5:21 pm
civilians not shell civilians so right now we are seeing quite a divide we are seeing countries speaking out against the aggressiveness that has been taking place with the statement taking place here headed by the u.s. and western allies through their attacks see attacks and there is a division that is deepening at the same time the international community is very much concerned about the violence that's taking place in libya so right now they did meet today will probably continue to meet over how this will continue. of the coalition forces and whether or not the u.s. will remain involved or if it's going to be moved over to nato the arab league wants to stay involved in what will be taking place in libya sorites now a lot of cooks in the kitchen trying to figure out what next steps should be taken marina really briefly briefly before we run out of time you said that there the security council may be meeting again on thursday given how intense the aerial
5:22 pm
campaign has been could it be too late by then. listen to this lucy let me live we should really stress that this resolution that was adopted last week said all measures necessary can be taken by the international community this resolution went beyond a no fly zone imposed over libya all measures necessary is very broad very general it gives these countries a lot of room to act in ways in which they want to and it may it may be a bit too late we have to wait and see but we can expect for this violence to continue and to see how the enter national community really does attempt to curb it once and for all all right well we know you'll be tracking this for us that was our correspondent merino portnoy i am now from questions surrounding libya two questions surrounding a jailed whistleblower the battle for badly manning's freedom is under way protesters this weekend blocked the quantico marine base demanding the release of
5:23 pm
the whistleblower in archie's killing ford was there and has more on the international movement for answers. in photos he's a smiling twenty three year old army private. but for two hundred ninety nine days bradley manning has been behind bars accused of passing top secret cables war logs and videos to whistle blowing web site wiki leaks here in quantico hundreds of activists and veterans have gathered outside of the military base where bradley manning is being held in solitary confinement twenty three hours a day they say he's being tortured to call for his immediate release although president obama says otherwise i have actually asked the pentagon whether or not. the procedures that have been taken in terms of his confinement are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards they assure me that they are state department
5:24 pm
spokesman p.j. crowley called manning's treatment quote ridiculous counterproductive and stupid and was forced to resign. well meaning spotter denounced the pentagon for stripping his son of his clothing and forcing him to stand at attention naked i mean it's shocking enough that i would. come on you know our silence as a family and say you know now then this you know you've crossed the line this is wrong protesters here denounced obama and say guantanamo bay has been brought to virginia they say the president can do better than simply trusting manning's jailers i can sing brother in confinement and i can tell you probably is not to be so out of it like it's really getting excited at all that she really thinks i'm whistleblower daniel ellsberg responsible for leaking the vietnam war logs known as the pentagon papers called manning a hero for his sample the courage for other people. the more that other people
5:25 pm
realize. the description is richer bond together as a. traitor. truth. appreciated by everybody that we recall having. before being arrested it with thirty five others for refusing to move from the entrance to quantico. local but not everyone in this town felt bradley had done the right thing knowing. that this man who these people are protesting for were my husband's life has been friends lives in danger it's just. it's frustrating and denied that he was being tortured the word torture they can do is to give him stale bread. it's not he's not being forced even as amnesty international and other human rights groups say his conditions are quote degrading and bring back memories of abu ghraib the pentagon
5:26 pm
has not set a trial date for manning who faces twenty two charges including aiding anomie which could carry the death penalty but activists here and around the world say they won't back down until he's free wheeling forward artsy triangle virginia so it's not just activists who are speaking out about the plight of bradley manning earlier we had a congressman dennis kucinich on the show who has taken an immense interest in bradley manning situation here's part of that conversation. well we heard from the department of defense and they told me that they would agree to permitting me to see bradley manning they also said that it would be up to bradley manning and his attorney to make the decision we were in touch with mr manning's attorney today he was meeting with bradley manning today we're told and we should have an answer very soon and no word yet on his condition we've heard that he's been catatonic and i don't know i mean i guess one of the you know and hearing all these reports i thought is really important to see for myself and so we're awaiting word hopefully
5:27 pm
we'll find out today that i will be able to visit with him and i hope you'll come back on this program and tell us how that goes and that the latest with that now i do want to switch gears one more time we all remember the terrible photos that came out of the ground scandal years ago unfortunately it looks like there are new photographs out about the kill team the so-called kill team in afghanistan u.s. soldiers who are currently on trial accused of egregious acts against afghan civilians there spiegel the german newspaper had published some of these photos we have them here they are a little bit blacked out and frankly quite graphic and image what does this do for america's image abroad and what does this say to you that these kinds of acts can be proportionate allowing that there's people on trial no one see anything that would violate their rights but the kind of pictures there spiegel was published and i read the der spiegel story. it once again points out that we're
5:28 pm
losing our way in these. military actions now most of the people who serve in our country are going to be sentenced but we shouldn't be there and action is definitely on that and you see this is a great well this is a look at these images are riveting just as we remember that they kind of have a way of imprinting. images these images whether we have been printing and of the scene in the muslim world and they will be the cause of much consternation and even more anger than already exists towards america and that world. we want to believe that our countries always has the right motives but when you see pictures such as are being published now. people who do not believe america has a right motives in their country occupying it going to find all of their worst.
5:29 pm
suspicions confirmed kind of thing did you ever expect us to be in that situation another conflict in libya continuing under arrest as president was elected on the promise to close guantanamo and these wars are you surprised that where we are today i am i have to tell you know it when i first came to congress which was in one thousand nine hundred six i was elected and i can't i came to congress so i could help create jobs and help people get an education and have good health care and protect social security and and all that all that's been going on over the period since nine eleven if we're talking about wars we started lose our way after nine eleven it was a serious attack on america but the way in which that was handled and interpreted set the stage for a global war on terror which has been a disaster and we have to protect our country to be sure there are people don't like america i understand that but the manner in which we deal with it has been actually counterproductive i was.
