6:00 pm
welcome the loner show at the real headlines with none of the mersey parking lot in washington d.c. now in response to a church in florida burned a koran protests broke out today in afghanistan in a u.n. compound killing seven people so bring you details on the massive protests and i will ask if the pastors of this florida church are to blame and an update on libya as the u.s. announces that they'll pull back all warplanes by tomorrow because uncertainty remains we want to know why the liberal not conservative warhawks are the ones that
6:01 pm
are the most denial then is the f.b.i. are lying about wiretapping i'll have details on one f.b.i. official who testified that he patriot act provisions should stay in place permanently so the bigger question here is will all of our civil liberties be thrown out the window for good then new jobs numbers are out today we'll give you details on what sectors doing well and i'll give you one hand it's not the government but your desk our join me to hash out all the information and we'll determine if this is a sign that the economy is on the up and then it's friday so let's celebrate with a toast and a little happy hour our producer jenny churchill and reasons might want to head will join me to talk about the stories that are making the biggest buzz this week but before we get to the fun stuff our top story. just a little over a week ago we reported to you that pastor terry jones now infamous for his plans to burn a pile of grans last september eleventh had finally carried out his one of patients at the gainesville church in florida on march twentieth pastor jones oversaw
6:02 pm
a mock trial and the gurning of a koran which passed away in south carried out and today there were tragic referee questions in response to the koran burning in afghanistan what started as hundreds of protesters turned into thousands of demonstrators in the northern afghan city of mazar e sharif the people stormed the u.n. convoy. killing seven you have staff members some reports even stated that you have been beheaded that's another bad sign for america's war there and the effort to win hearts and minds so we have to ask how responsible pastor jones and sour are for this violence disgusted with me that can stand better and. take so much of being heard and to be with you now clearly this is a very tragic situation and we have to wonder these these two pastors pastor terry jones is absolutely no stranger to the spotlight and he was asked not only by the president he was given a personal phone call by the secretary of defense last year asking him not to burn these he promised he wouldn't do it and then we see a little bit less than a year later this go through so are they actually to blame for the lives that have
6:03 pm
been lost i think so at this point the reason that we know that they are to blame for this they didn't cells did not kill somebody but they were complicit they were conspirators if you will they were correlated to the event so granted they did not pay somebody to go shoot but they encourage them they give them the fuel if this is this is what guantanamo bay was once i will but what abu ghraib was in terms of recruitment towards anti-american sentiment is exactly what jones and this other guy have been doing and westboro baptist church and so if we if we saw the people in in abu ghraib being criminalized then so should this this jones and sap and these others now of course pastor jones came out with a statement today saying that he didn't regret at all what happened he did call what happened afghanistan tragic and called it criminal and said that the u.s. should do something about it and essentially bring islamic to trial as they supposedly did but you know the thing is they're not the ones facing any
6:04 pm
reputations here nobody is now attacking them it's unfortunately it's american troops it's international troops in afghanistan and international u.n. workers there as well they're ok the price these are even these are even soldiers that were killed some of them they were diplomats they were human rights activists they were people that. in many ways trying to work with muslims inside of afghanistan and bring holistic. benevolence to that nation and one of the problems that jones and these other people do is that they spend very little time in bible class apparently they forgot about blessed are you the peacemaker but instead they turned to some wild new source and said we're going to make a demon or a devil out of somebody and my word to the jones and to these other folks is that they really ought to go back to school and read what the text says because they clearly forgotten what's critically important to being a christian i myself went to seminary and was a pastor previously before i was a military analyst and i know that this is something that christians across the
6:05 pm
board across the globe need to come down it's a christians that need to stand up and be prophetic against their own tradition against abusive people like phelps and jones and the rest of them and of course pastor terry jones we interviewed him on this program last year when he first came up with this wild plan the first time around that he wanted to grant and i asked him then and he said he hadn't even read the crime he said he didn't need to he just knew that it was evil so clearly these people you know they don't even look as if they don't understand misunderstanding you know right you know the crazy thing is there's parts of the koran that are like directly they are directly quotations from the bible so even if even christians protest the koran of the islamic tradition which is they can do that that's fine but when they burn the book they're burning their own scriptures as well they're burning some of their own text and so it doesn't do anybody any good and the other thing in terms militarily in talking about the battle is that granted in war there are two sides and those two sides
6:06 pm
both have a say in the conflict but all too often in conflict there's unpredictable unknown circumstances that may impact the war and situations like this undermine completely undermine u.s. efforts to win the hearts and minds it's detrimental to our efforts and i want to talk about where this happened to this this protest. isn't a northern town in afghanistan mazar e sharif which is known to be not friendly to the taliban which isn't known to be incredibly religious this is supposed to be a more modernized westernized city really well so if we saw this kind of action even in mazar e sharif then what does that mean for the entire works it means two things it means that number one we don't have a list of military control over all the bases and territories inside of afghanistan that's number one the second thing it means is that the overall hearts and minds of the of the afghans sort of supporting the u.s. military efforts has been fractured fractured significantly because now they're just not targeting soldiers now they're targeting civilians human rights human
6:07 pm
rights workers and the other thing i think is critical notice the timing of this we saw just a few days ago more photos released from the afghan kill squads that the rolling stone article produced the culmination of that in the koran burning incident completely undermine efforts and notice what general petraeus said just a few few weeks ago that whatever progress we have made quote is. tenuous it is fractional it is very fragile it was exact words and so we need to keep that in mind my best sense of what is going to happen in the near future is that overall military efforts and human rights efforts inside of territories that are know about this which is basically all the afghanistan now is going to be less willing to support afghan u.s. and nato forces now what do you think supposedly in july or all the deadline is coming up and we're supposed to start withdrawing we haven't seen any kind of plans reportedly general petraeus hasn't given obama any type of plan so how many people are really we don't know i very frightened i'm very scared that the united
6:08 pm
states is making a very long term commitment to afghanistan a strategic arms agreement where the u.s. bases could be there for seventy five years i'm scared about that and i'm working every day on capitol hill with conservatives and liberals to bring them to. gather to recognize that even in this tenuous time that it's critical that we leave so i don't know and we'll know we'll know in a month here was where we're going to go with the trails and the cars are going well as you know we finally get some answers jake thank you so much for joining us tonight but be with them by the way pastor terry jones we wanted him to come on the program tonight explain himself but he was mysteriously unavailable now still to come on tonight show a change in command for the libya intervention i'll have details on it will be in charge of the u.s. attorney role and we'll find out why the liberal war hawks are in denial and then on the topic of libya will tell you about one mainstream media network who seems to be very pro-war these days and we're not talking about fox news.
6:09 pm
let's not forget that we had an apartheid break. i think. either one well. we never got the live shows here for the keep you safe get ready for freedom. rachel martin here broadcasting live from washington d.c. coming up today on the big picture.

long responses we let your voice be heard. a few updates on the war in libya today libyan opposition officials have said that they've reached a deal with qatar to give the money for weapons and exchange for oil the rebels also after suffering setbacks in the last few days and upon the announcement by robert gates and admiral mike mullen yesterday that the u.s. is going to hold back all of its warplanes by tomorrow they are now calling for a cease fire which gadhafi has not yet responded so the quicken limited humanitarian intervention becomes more mired in uncertainty but why isn't the sheen wearing off for the war hawks many of whom are coming from the left in this particular case why are people too uncomfortable to speak about some of the blatant truths of this war and instead choose to think of it as black and white and simply good versus evil here to discuss the way this is robert dr oz contributing editor at the nation thanks so much for being here tonight my pleasure like i said let's
6:12 pm
stop pretending that this is really all about humanitarian intervention and solely about protecting civilians what is who is benefiting from our war involvement here in the well gosh i mean i think first and foremost. the concern i have with this is that it hijacks the arab spring and so whoever was benefiting from it it really is undermining the seeming independence of that whole movement because it now looks like the united states and nato behind it is coming in and taking sides i think it's paradoxical isn't it that the united states is getting sort of angry and condemnatory because of you the countries are those that like libya and syria and of course before that iraq and then more broadly iran and sort of more solicitous and friendly toward the countries where the rulers are guys that we like egypt and tunisia at first and then the gulf states where there's all kinds of rebellions reign in yemen so i think there's
6:13 pm
a dual standard that's being in you know. imposed by the united states in terms of how it's approaching this and that is really bad for. future of the progressive future of this movement that sort of to take root. in the arab world and the most of the most the world beyond this obscenely a double standard here there's obviously some hypocrisy here where we choose to intervene intervene for humanitarian purposes and where we decide not to do that you know you also wrote about the fact that and i just mentioned it i feel like everyone just acts like it's so simple it's so black and white right you're either for getting coffee out and helping people or you're not i mean for anybody who brings up the fact i don't know maybe this will strengthen the pentagon you know african maybe defense contractors or the fact that this might have something to do with oil people act like you're jumping to some silly crazy conclusions well it's clear that we wouldn't be involved in that region at all at least anything like the extent to which we are if it weren't for the fact that there's so much oil under
6:14 pm
the sand there if this were happening in central africa it would really be an afterthought and i think that the you know if you go back through history of the united states is approached that region has been increasingly since the late seventy's a militarized one with the rapid deployment force and then the creation of centcom and the first gulf war and there's been increasing american military presence in that part of the world which can only have to do with the energy resources that the united states is concerned about there that doesn't mean that we're in libya because of oil but it means that our regional involvement is really i think based on the fact that this is considered to be a vital american interest and really in twenty first century the middle east is not american turf anymore it's really you know a much changed situation where the united states is becoming one of many important powers but not the dominant force in that part of the world and especially after
6:15 pm
this arab spring after we watched revolutions unfold there and i'm dressed in the entire situation change you could you think made it. clear when he gave his speech on the day and the other night that he will be willing to wage wars in terms of you know what we need for resources you know he said that will do it if our values but also if the flow of commerce happens to be threatened yes he said the flow of commerce and really i don't think he was talking about coffee shipments from brazil it's clear there would be possible read about the call from the ivory coast there where he's talking about the sea lanes and the oil shipments which is really the most important global commerce and that of involves china and india and other countries that depend on the middle east for oil and natural gas and i think you know he says values are important and that makes intervention arbitrary because you can always decide on an arbitrary basis when american values in some.
6:16 pm
abstract way are threatened by events in another country he also said we're willing to intervene on a unilateral basis even though he said we'll try to get international support for interventions abroad. when our interests are threatened will intervene unilaterally so if you combine unilateral and values you really means you can do anything you want to end and i think that it raises really troubling questions about iran because i've argued for quite a while that obama does not want to get stuck in the any kind of war involving iran he did open toward iran he tried to negotiate he's house and close that door but if there were to be an uprising in iran like happened two years ago if let's say a city were taken over by rebels in iran by the green movement or oil workers on strike or anything like that i think these same questions that obama is
6:17 pm
grappling with over libya would have to come to the fore on iran and he would then get the support not only of the. the right wing harks in the militarists but the sort of group of liberal interventionists who see intervention in a country like iran as something that might be worth doing and if you think back to iraq in two thousand and three it wasn't just the hawks who supported attacking iraq there was also a whole group of people who were anti-proliferation who were concerned about nuclear weapons of course there weren't any but they were mobilized to support the war same thing with human rights defenders who considered saddam hussein could be a violator of human rights because of his suppression of the kurds and the shia in iraq so much the same thing that we're seeing now perhaps a few of the names of the faces of change but you know definitely we're seeing so many of these liberal war hawks now start emerge about i want to thank you very
6:18 pm
much for joining us and we have more on that right now you've seen our coverage of the war in libya but what about the rest of the mainstream media here in the u.s. usually a pro war an anti-war stance as are associated with certain networks depending on their liberal or conservative bias but what if we told you that there is one network that is liberal pro-ana and very pro-war these days archies christine for sound has more. to say it's believed by many to be the most liberal of all cable networks and this n.b.c. pro obama it is clear that it matches what he said about that issue at the very start of his presidency pro-union but conservatives really miss country that is so you're nothing but a bunch of pretty roads. that's what they say and also under stake oblique pro-war. blogger filmmaker and former journalist danny schechter says television makes were
6:19 pm
possible we couldn't have wars in america if t.v. networks didn't glorify them in some way and make them exciting. he the action oriented call for a try call merely. iraq. afghanistan and now. yes the us involvement in libya let's get it done let's zero in these rebels let's give them a chance to fight a sentiment also supported by m.s.n. he sees most liberal talk show hosts rachel maddow and lawrence o'donnell it seems to me there's a practical war making tactical success that they believe they could have in this particular country exactly he can't describing himself as sort of acutely aware of the risks and the costs of america doing any sort of military intervention and so you're exactly right i think we have to do it it is a moral decision at this point so you might be thinking well that's just because
6:20 pm
the u.s. involvement in libya falls under a democratic president but as it turns out and as n.b.c. has had a longstanding love affair with war remember astley banfield oh my god. she became a star reporter covering the world trade center attacks but in two thousand and three. cans of state university just as the war in iraq was getting started she said about the coverage what didn't you see you didn't see where those bullets landed you didn't see what happened when the mortar landed a puff of smoke is not what a mortar looks like when it explodes believe me there are horrors that were completely left out of this war and i think he's the refused to let her out of her contract but kept her off air muzzling her and happened to with former independent governor jesse ventura you know. you were out then
6:21 pm
a phone call asking if it was true that he didn't support the war in iraq. i don't doubt you on the air before three years. anything. you don't already knew she was for three years so too did fuel their prize winning journalist peter arnett after giving this interview on iraqi t.v. and there it was really the best be in the book. you read it and read right in the play the first week. because of the iraqi resistance when it was n.b.c. was still up and coming its highest rated show was hosted by this man phil donahue an outspoken critic of the war and you know i think you know we're all now everybody's right just one of terrible head for this is we were when he was doing that he was our us so we had absolute and now we're sending our sons and brothers
6:22 pm
to war to fix that was a great deal does it wasn't fair to me that show was canceled a few weeks before the war started phil donahue was an anti-war voices on m.s.n. b.c. one of the cable news channels and a memo that was leaked as the donahue show was cancelled is very explicit and said we don't want this to be a face of n.b.c. as united states goes into war looks like to stay on board you need to sound more like this well look i am a liberal i am a progressive but that means that we need to stand behind people who want freedom this isn't bush talk this is totally different from iraq it's totally different from any other situation christine for sound r t. well i'm sure the obama administration law enforcement even many members of congress would like to keep it under the radar you need to know that on may twenty seventh three patriot act provisions will expire the same three that were just recently renewed
6:23 pm
temporarily roving wiretaps the lone wolf provision and the library records provision this week f.b.i. director robert mueller testified before the senate judiciary committee where he argued that those three provisions should be made permanent and if that doesn't worry you enough you should also know that he flat out lied. from your point of view were there any of these three terms or been sort of very good reports for your . aware of any. that's right the f.b.i. director claims that he doesn't know of any violations thankfully we have the electronic frontier foundation the just announced yesterday one example of many is discovered of the f.b.i. monitoring young children despite the fact that their voices didn't match the target violations so it was all hope for our civil liberties lost when officials start spreading lies to get their way joining me to discuss it is declan mccullagh correspondent at ciena news declan thanks so much for joining us tonight first
6:24 pm
starters that robert mueller thinks that we should make all three of these provisions permanent i say that is crazy what do you think. well i mean this is what happened is that senator grassley who's kind of your long or conservative. what you can do is the softball question director mueller any probably he's not a problem that's actually your service was the response was so. this is like the first time of the make these are some of the tea party revolt they were who aspire to twenty seventh and instead you got a temporary extension until the end of may as you said i think it would be a little dangerous making used permanent that the entire piece was rushed into law which is working around the clinton administration for years and it was sort of all go on together and then with only two members of congress having the chance to read it so we are going to think it's better to rip it out and start over having to you
6:25 pm
also to think that this was like you said it was rushed through congress because this was supposed to be an emergency situation post nine eleven and apparently we're just continuously going to be living out of this post nine eleven world where everything we do you know we can be spied on at any moment but the fact that he then was asked if he's been aware of any violations because of the patriotic or because of these three provisions and said no he wasn't aware of it i mean is he is he just politically and aware or was he flat out lying business to swear an oath before testifying before congress. there is if you will that's a question to ask him if i had to yes. you could he misspoke i mean you know you're under some pressure testifying before congress now that's the generous explanation of the last year or less generous explanations as you said that he intentionally played a summer courses or there was an inspector general's report showing how the f.b.i.
6:26 pm
has misused some of this power what one of the provisions the national security letter provision that has been misused in the past and what one reason is that anyone. and issue it you don't need to go up the chain of command to washington d.c. and the f.b.i. you will age and use it with little oversight and then as you said the electronic frontier foundation in san francisco based of the liberties group came out with their own all your documents as saying that it's been used to eavesdrop on young trooper in europe and if that happens you are supposed to go through a wiretap and subject to go in days because if you can show they also want very you know when you look through the electronic frontier foundation the documents that they did receive they said that they are all heavily redacted so you know to me the natural assumption is that there are other things there that they're trying to hide . and so it certainly makes sense to me isn't it difficult to guess what's going on but you generally only find out about these abuses years all either when you have
6:27 pm
a whistleblower or when you have an inspector general report go in or when you. get really lucky with freedom of information act request and so it is difficult to know it's going on because there are these new things we classify her secret and governments don't like to reveal embarrassing info i have to guess the answer is yes especially with one of the sections two zero six that's expiring as a roving surveillance section and that means that if you want to go on someone you can just this is only for foreign intelligence purposes mind you not traditional criminal investigations but you only have to give their name and you can track them wherever they go and better to use any phone line they use it are all someone else's phone and it's a very broad surveillance and similar to the general warrants that the columnist didn't like the back to bring revolutionary war era so you know this is a pro this is a program of use he thinks that the fact that. you know he has
6:28 pm
a ten year deadline basically on how long he's allowed to hold this position so people are saying that by this fall he could be expected to step down i think that has anything to get with it is really just trying to solidify what he's got to work with for the last ten years for whoever comes after him. and that's a good question and it's possible i mean that you see is the that you have this trend in the permanent bureaucracy and that is you know skinny people at the top of the chain of people the top model but everyone else in these agencies the understudy the same ministrations and they tend to be the ones pushing for more surveillance of glory i think that the p.r. director robert mueller wants to give it to them and i think to this one you know he wants to be his legacy the other hand he waited until he was asked by senator grassley presumably should be made permanent my recollection from really was repaired remarks didn't say that but for all i know these are beforehand and they
6:29 pm
sort of agree that this will be asked and what a legacy he's going to be leaving behind now reportedly the f.-f. also passed on these documents now from the freedom of information act request to senators grassley and leahy so we'll see if they happen to bring that out any next time that there is a hearing that may twenty seventh is the deadline thanks so much for joining us. any time. as telecom tonight why the word viewer is should be spoken in the capitol building in florida that's in our tools have a war and the jobs numbers are perm arch are out so what are the never say about the recovery here in the u.s. and around the world a look into it in just a moment. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so silly you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear see some other part of it and realize everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture.
