to her site well you can tell that it's left leaning or you can just plain call it lefty and in fact this site has been a voice for the left for years and home to numerous well known lefty bloggers but over the weekend arianna did an interview with the new york times well the first note it is quite obvious the new york times are not fans of each other when you read it first ari on his cue to bill keller and now we have this so andrew goldman of the new york times asked arianna he said you've been saying recently if the huffington post is not a lefty publication to which here's bonded actually i've been saying that for three years the tag line that we've used a lot is beyond left and right i'm sorry but just saying your web site goes beyond left and right doesn't make it true arianna have you looked acre site lately now the writer followed up with the next question and said it's as if you're trying to tell me that smurfs aren't blue to which i say good boy now are ya then responded by saying i'm just telling you that it is very clear that we have progressive views

but to call everything we're doing lefty well it misses the whole point that american policy needs to be redefined beyond left and right it's completely obsolete you call it takes ok arianna just keep repeating the same lines and maybe somebody will actually believe you asked for me i'm not buying it you are lefties so is your website that's how you made three hundred fifteen million dollars so embrace the label and move on you were founded as a lefty response to the drudge report you've now made millions off of catering to a lefty reader and that's fine now you're going corporate you're trying to rebrand yourself to appeal to a wider audience and we get it but that still does not make it true you can't make all of your money off you using the left right paradigm and then act like you're above it once you've made all that money and that's why arianna huffington is tonight's told time whether. p.j. crowley a former state department official who was forced to resign last month after speaking out against the treatment of bradley manning is now coming to the defense of wiki

leaks kind of the the least raising some very important questions crawly who condemned the u.s. treatment of bradley manning as ridiculous counterproductive and stupid told so long that it's hard to distinguish what we did for what the new york times did in regards to any criminal charges as the new york times published numerous classified diplomatic cables that we can leaks released last fall the time to release the u.s. government said that the documents would cause great harm to the u.s. and to diplomats across the world and the new york times still chose to publish the cables as to the leaks so we have to ask why the laser focus on bringing weekly leaks down as opposed to the new york times and probably told salon i did not see weeks and weeks as journalism and as a source of information that said it is hard to distinguish what we did from what the new york times did and that's why the focus is rightly on bradley manning now currently bradley manning is being held in solitary confinement in quantico virginia suspected of leaking the documents to wiki leaks and as for julian assange

the man who created the weak exe website the u.s. government has desperately been trying to make a case against him with no success as of yet the justice department is currently investigating wiki leaks and songe and many lawmakers here in the rest of openly even called first to face treason charges even though he's not american but a former state department official says that the new york times did the same thing that wiki leaks did by publishing the cables then with the chimes also face those charges that feeds that problem with the case that the u.s. government is trying to build against design so it seems that p.j. crowley is playing offense a little bit here but at least he's speaking up and firm a former state department official i'd say that's a pretty big news now the d.o.j. won't comment on their ongoing investigation against weight leaks and julian assange because more time passes seems their goal of prosecuting him appears to be falling apart. i for one congratulate p.j. crowley for pointing out the obvious the both we do leaks and the new york times perform the exact same function of leaking classified information to the american people the same function function that newspapers and journalists have been playing

for years. now it's the latest battle to consume capitol hill the battle over the budget and a potential government shutdown a shutdown that would not only close down the government here in washington d.c. but also leave those waiting for passports social security checks and medicare benefits out in the cold so have d.c. politicians forgotten about what the actual effects of the shutdown would be on the american people all favor of talking and flavor of lofty talking points and what do the american people the american taxpayers feel about this looming shutdown producer lindsey garfield took to the streets of d.c. to find out. there's been a lot of talk over the past couple weeks about a looming government shutdown of congress can't agree on a budget bill simply stop operating but are people on the street really worried about this let's find out why you just want to call the government's going to shut down the rest of the country's going to run does it worry you a little bit because they you know everything's gone on you don't who's going to

run the country or what's going to happen at the end of this week on friday if democrats and republicans can't agree on a new budget in the government's going to be shut down what is what does that mean to you shut down the home loan that's the question until they can agree on a budget. take a vacation that be nice i think you can and should be avoided i think we got bigger problems in this world that we would be focusing on and we want to keep everybody employed and working and we can't afford government stop working you for a minute. do you think it's actually going to happen now i sometimes hear that they might start the whole government just because both sides can reach an agreement of course it sort of worries you know right. there that anger you even that the sides can't compromise on something like the budget. maybe just a bit amazed that. in such a democratic country sides can really find a middle ground so i would say it's. not such

a good example of pressure. if you or your country is fighting for democracy in other countries then this definitely doesn't have a very good example for democracy everyone should be able to compromise and there's got to be a middle ground but that would at least prevent the government from shutting down here in the us and our congress governments can't agree on the budgets they are going to shut down on friday what do you think. it england will do things that where they just stay open and till they come to some sort of compromise the will really shut down and they will you don't think they will. but you know my bottom dollar to use an americanism. so you think it's all just a lot of hype it's just. i think it's killing me you know i mean charging them services shutting down parks people don't have work. to me totally unacceptable. but these politicians. their lives don't change they still get benefits they still

get health care they still get taken care of it's on acceptable the federal government would even need to come into this. and put all these people at work they don't really care. about that. well it's official president obama formally launched his reelection campaign today by filing cabinet the papers today that means that team obama can start raising money and expect there to be plenty of it ready already speculate this will be the first billion dollar presidential race but is money going to be enough by the looks of the video the team obama released today all that hope the change the south has become a relic of the past i have this perception that politics is sound bites of politics is how we govern ourselves that's what politics is grassroots it's internationals talking to other individuals and making a difference. so

will this new very practical and quite. frankly lack the david go approach really work for what's sure to be a tough presidential fight if you want me to discuss it is david pacman host of the david packman show david thanks so much for joining us today now i don't know if you're with me here but personally i find this obama ad to be a little a little boring a little law so do you think that they're kind of that they're nervous here of they lost a little bit of their confidence or is this their way of trying to adapt to the times to realize that the economy is still in a lol. you know i don't know that they're nervous i mean it's early enough where you can start with something different see how people like it see what effect it has i don't know that nervous is the right word but definitely i think that there are questions that go i think they know that the approach from two thousand and eight is not going to get the same response because it's the type of approach they can't work twice you can't go with hope and change to times if it least some people don't think you delivered on that right so i think there's no question the approach

will have to be different the question is is the ad you just played going to really be the right approach or is it going to be something else well that's why i wonder what your opinion is on that because in this approach it's all about grassroots it's about it starts with us it's not about hyping a particular candidate obama isn't even in this ad and so i find it so interesting that they even have a man of the ad that says you know i don't necessarily agree with him on everything but i trust him like you don't have to like the guy but just be practical please go out get off the couch and vote. yeah the thing is i personally would not be going this route i would be going the route of pointing out exactly what obama did right exactly all of the things that republicans try to stand in the way of successes with health care even though it's not a perfect bill by any means i would be going about this much more aggressively put in his defense it's still early like i said there's still plenty of time for that and i'm curious to see what some of his opponents do like tempo leonti with his

hollywood ads i just i'm still trying to figure out where the republicans are going to come after him especially on the stereotype the democrats will not use military force and will not hold the trigger obama hasn't fallen into that category it's why i'm actually happy that you mention tim pawlenty and his hollywood style ads because he released a new ad today in response to obama's video let's play a clip for the viewers to see about mike. to. get a picture. there with. the guy he. wanted his. campaign to be. there to work. its way to. you know

i got handed. it in self is kind of a boring guy is kind of the boring candidate but god damn you know that make a good flashy well produced hollywood style ad and do you think that's going to work for americans i mean you know those types of things can definitely be convincing. i think it's not going to work for paul and he i think even if he starts doing the ads in three d. it's not going to help him at all tim paul and he recently appeared on brian fisher's radio program the american family association brian fisher is a guy who told me in an interview that there is no such thing as a monogamous relationship with the rectal wall is quote one self it so bryan fischer is a guy that you probably don't want to be associated with for whatever reason tim holland has decided it's ok to go on lately and see gay media and suggest things like repealing the don't ask don't tell repeal so on and so forth if this is a complete double standard alone or because if it were an anti black or anti

semitic media outlet you would not see republican mainstream candidates going on there but for whatever reason the anti gay media is fine for tim collins and you know a simple as he is now the only one of that actually seems to be fine for a number of g.o.p. presidential hopefuls right now is the anti-gay bias as well as the completely anti-abortion bias and the anti muslim but you know that's something that we've covered here on this show and you know that's interesting too because in every presidential race there has to be some kind of a veil in earth there's got to be a bad guy and you could say that in two thousand and eight for obama that was fairly easy he had george bush he had the war in iraq what's going to be this time around. well i think that if you actually want to get down to it there are too many villains there's actually it's an abundance of riches in a sense because we've seen state legislation reaches all the way up to the house of representatives tried to repeal the obama health care bill what fifteen sixteen times it wasn't going anywhere try to pass one after another and see woman bill

fortunately most of those have gotten shut down there's no shortage of villains especially if the democrats wanted to start pulling in some of the corporate influence but that's the thing both parties with the exception of a handful of members of congress are completely influenced by corporate donations that so i don't want a little higher because devil everyone has the corporate influence is a real quick this is expected to be the first billion dollar campaign i bet obama can do it do you think it is going to be enough money to counter him on the right i think that there is going to be plenty of money what i what i do think is that it's embarrassing what is happening with campaign finance new united states almost nobody i'm talking to in the house will stand behind them screw signatures point of view on campaign finance reform the money that is going into t.v. commercials and lawn signs and all of these things the amount we could be doing with that in the u.s. and around the world. it's embarrassing to think about it really is i'm with you

like to cut out they are just violent and we thank you as always for your responses and here's our next one for you hillary clinton is now officially the most popular member of the obama cabinet with a favor ability rate of sixty six percent according to a recent gallup poll so that means she has a higher popularity rate than vice president joe biden secretary of defense robert gates even president obama himself so we're wondering do you think that obama should replace joe biden with hillary clinton as vice president for two thousand and twelve you can respond to us on facebook twitter and you tube and who knows your response just might make it on air. now attorney general eric holder announced today that he lead sheikh mohammad and other alleged nine eleven terrorists will be tried before military commissions at guantanamo bay instead of receiving trials within the u.s. federal court system mohamed and four others who are being held to give are facing charges of participating in the nine eleven plot clicheed muhammad being the alleged mastermind now the move is

a sharp reversal and defeat for the obama administration which last year said that they wanted these alleged terrorist to have civilian trials in federal courts with case of trials slated to take place in new york city but their decision to try to send new york set off quite the political firestorm even though civilian trials have a much higher success rate as opposed to military commissions which have been mired in controversy and are relatively new republican and democratic leaders and members of the new york congressional delegation all came out against the plan they cited cost and security concerns over the trials being held. in manhattan some also argue that the suspects who are not american citizens should not receive the rights and protections provided to defendants in civil courts now congress under the control of democrats bought the big idea and move swiftly to cut off funding for the civilian trial so today holder defended his original plan and blamed congress for intervening and cutting off the funding for those domestic trials and sadly this is yet another sign that obama simply will not be able to deliver on his promise to shut down the going on

a base facility or to pursue his agenda of civilian trials for accused terrorists although in the past he was the candidate that said the our justice system our courts are something to be proud of rather than an ad hoc approach to justice but don't forget last week's ruling in a federal appeals court that said that a yemeni detainee couldn't be released even though there was no evidence that he had worked with or been a member of al qaeda simply that he was an save area is that so how anybody could argue that civilian trials are less harsh on detainees after that ruling makes absolutely no sense to me and i guess the larger point that we can take away from all of this if we get mo is not going anywhere anytime soon and that's sad. continuing on rest in the middle east means continuing bad news for oil prices today oil futures jumped to their highest level in two and a half years with brant crude passing one hundred twenty dollars a barrel gas prices in the u.s. average three dollars and sixty six cents today and that's up almost thirty percent

with this time last year so can we expect these prices to keep going up or could factors aside from a settling down to libya help things like obama's promise of more offshore drilling here in the u.s. and b.p. already apply for more of those calls contracts are discussed with me as our correspondent laura lister lauren very happy to have you back in the d.c. studio you are new york now one hundred twenty dollars a barrel for crude that's definitely not a small job but it's not cheap opec on one hand has said that they don't feel the need to have a meeting of these are extraordinary measures but we do know that the u.s. has its own oil reserves that the president could tap into that he needed to but i mean how high would the price up to go in order for that to happen well some argue that that's already happening and that's what's fueling obama's participation in air strikes in libya i mean although libya is just two percent of the world's oil that it supplies i mean you have to understand that many analysts believe that because of demand being where it is globally any disruption in supply amounts to major impact in the prices and so on say it out already going on with libya now

others are saying that obama should tap into the reserves the seven hundred twenty seven million barrels of oil that the united states has but on the flip side that's a risky thing you know analysts i spoke to say that right now oil prices we've been seeing them jump brant crude over one hundred twenty dollars like you mentioned this is the europe the oil sold in europe and this is considered the best gauge of oil markets right now but also the index which is what the u.s. relies on is also you know twenty seven percent over last year at one hundred eight dollars so we're seeing rises across the board and it is a concern but the problem with tapping the reserves is that when this there's a lot of all it. right now so if the middle east settles down and things get back to normal those prices could come down again now like the said libya only really produces two percent of the world's oil supply but that still can affect especially european countries probably more than in the u.s. but the saudis said the don't worry will make up for anything lost right now for

libya not producing oil have they been doing they have and i think the key word is from libya so libya supplies about one point six million barrels of oil a day one point three million depending on who you talk to saudi arabia did step forward saying we can do this we can produce this and they have been but what we're seeing is for example today with the spike we saw in brant the financial times reported that this is because of an oil strike going on in african country of gone well i mean this would be typical according to the reports to have that happen in oil strike and you wouldn't normally see a strike in this region caused this surge in prices but it just shows the sensitivity because of the unrest in the middle east because of concerns over supply that if any other destruction the supply happens in addition on top of libya people are concerned that that supply wouldn't be able to be made up for it could it also be the opposite way around good news actually make oil prices go higher to right last week we had a fairly positive jobs report for the u.s. economy unemployment went down to eight point eight percent two hundred sixteen

thousand jobs were added you know on top of that some are even speculating that quantitative easing to the ben bernanke either the fact that the stimulus work the tarp has been paid back all of that has led to even more productivity well it could and there's a couple of issues that you touched on when you talk about the unemployment numbers that came out and there are some reports in the wall street journal they said that they believe that that helped fuel increases in oil i mean the reason for that being that oil you what's it's what's been one of those prices fueled by ok supply and demand so if you have a more productive economy if unemployment goes down in a country the united states that accounts for twenty five percent of global oil consumption. if that happens then that could cause the numbers to go up but most of the analysts that i've spoken to today say that they believe that this is much more tied to the middle east also supply issues affect prices a lot more quickly than demand issues so and two hundred fifty thousand jobs is really not very many it's kind of a flash in the pan and eight point one million were lost so there is you know that

is that point and then on a quantitative easing point we've seen on the foreign policy blog on oil an argument being made that essentially all of this money has gone out fueled investment in emerging markets fueled their productivity and fueled their demand for oil which has driven prices up so that's another theory out there but that's winding down and that could cause prices to then come down doesn't seem like you can really win either way of the last week obama also unveiled a new energy policy where he wanted to reduce our reliance on foreign oil by one third over the next ten years today b.p. already applied for new or contracts for drilling contracts in the gulf even though it hasn't even been a year since the massive oil spill last summer do you think that that's also you know shouldn't that calm down the markets a little bit the fact that the u.s. is going to be investing more in domestic oil well it depends because if you're talking about oil commodities futures they trade at three six twelve months from it so they're more broadly yes activities yes this was good news bigger picture i mean natural gas rallied after that speech so when he's talking about these longer term
