it's a happy ending for five russian journalists in libya who've been released after being held by rebels in the east of the country. so it's a short sharp war in libya all getting presents of course in the ratings boost he expected but some say it was motivated by imperialist mission. and also reporting that georgia's attempts to project a democratic image of tarnished by the state of its legal system even the lawyers are getting persecuted.
3:01 pm
international news live from our studios here in central moscow this is our team just parcel pm here in the russian capital and nine pm in libya where five russian journalists captured by libyan rebel fighters earlier on friday a pain free it comes as the front line continues to shift in the fight between colonel gadhafi forces and the rebels. joins us now with the make developments from the capital tripoli now part of this is the first time that we know of that journalists have been held by rebel forces during the conflict is there any indication as to why they decided to do this well it seems as more details become available on some confusion on the ground as you state fire russian journalists in print journalists look at leading russian newspaper and three working for a russian television and they have been released and they are back in a hotel in

a rebel town are being dollars each. and sound now they say that they were in france to be able to some seventy kilometers away. when they were picked up by opposition fighters they were pushed into jeeps on board. where they were interrogated for several hours at a former military base that they won't question where they were constantly asked why we're going to the southern side now this just seems to suggest that the rebel fighters thought that they could perhaps be movie force and wanted to ascertain that this was not the case before actually letting them go but a journalist saying that they were treated fairly and they had no complaints as far as their treatment which they also said they had an opportunity to actually see the rebels themselves retreating from the some part of the country and also an opportunity to see some of the heavy machinery they now have access to now ours are in context here in tripoli russian embassy you know been in contact with the russian foreign ministry and certainly earlier in the day we heard from the russian

foreign minister sergei lavrov that they were monitoring the situation carefully they had one type of. consulate in benghazi and that if the germans were not to be a it was also the option of russia approaching those countries who reportedly have special units of operation on the ground in the situation. or rather countries because as you say this was the first line that you can take and by opposition forces the situation is very different here in tripoli where we still are hearing that at least four foreign journalists are being held by the libyan offer as he's a no news as. well on the paul that we saw coalition forces mistakenly launch an air strike on rebel positions tell us what is the local reaction being to where it. well there has been a sense of disillusionment amongst the opposition forces here in libya for quite some days now towards nato they've been complaining that they haven't actually carried through with. only destroyed maybe twenty five thirty cities after his

machinery and they're calling for an increase in why are you in nato airstrikes one in fact the opposite is happening we witnessed a decline in the number of is fried chicken place but now with the latest strike that has gone horribly wrong the second major is strike in two weeks to misstate rebel fighters forbid afy forces as late as it is try killing some five little fighters and wounded some twenty two this has changed the route from disillusionment and we're hearing more and more anger being expressed by family opposition forces here towards those coalition forces. the nato secretary general has said that he strongly were great as the incident they had actually been an apology from nato but they have explained the situation by saying that the five line is extremely fluid is the constant flow of weapons forwards and backwards and that they had not been informed that in the last few days fighters had started using weapons and machinery and tanks that had formerly belonged to gadhafi forces

and medical same time also looks very similar to. paula thanks very much indeed for that live update there in tripoli well veteran british m.p. jeremy corbin told me earlier that nato badly mistakes in libya suggest that the alliance has no world of strategy it's very damaging but it underlines the lack of any clear purpose in this mission and the lack of any i'm going in and i think the result will probably be a very easy partition of libya with a stalemate between the two constant conflict and costs none of us to the future there has to be some political solution to this otherwise the carnage will continue the losses will continue and western interests will increasingly look with the greedy eyes on these enormous oil reserves and indeed the market opportunities of libya i would assume the libyan people bring about their solution without western interference. m.p. jeremy corbin there in london talking to be

a little earlier here naughty but with the u.s. cutting back its involvement in the airstrikes the mission is becoming hugely dependent on french jets but as artie's daniel bushell reports the longer the campaign lasts the more french people themselves are beginning to wonder about the reasons for the country's leading role. france was among the first countries to push for a military solution in libya but now watchers are questioning its justification for going in once again on what i call the imperial condominium a recurrent quest to africa already having long term connections on the continent paris called forgive colonel gadhafi for fighting its military in neighboring chad in the 1980's and challenging its corporations in the region ever since. is it a friend's party or or is it a sarkozy party see do it at least try to convince the. men in this capacity to be their leader of the g twenty. and also the

coming up in the program this hour back to the square where they won egyptians have returned to tahrir square calling for the prosecution of else did president mubarak examine the reasons behind the uproar months after he was overthrown. the leading money minds together at a conference held by a renowned billionaire to try and map a new way forward for global financial policy. stories to come first to finish priest is under investigation over his statements against one of the world's most wanted men doc and an online mouth piece of chechen militants pastor was charged with inciting racial hatred right after his interview with r.t. in which he described the model as a terrorist despite the fact that model for himself has claimed responsibility for many of russia's worst terror attacks including the recent bombing of moscow's domodedovo airport but there is also been a longtime critic of

a website called the kind of care center where extremists from the north caucuses openly express their views the website is banned here in russia and many european countries but freely operates in finland terrorism expert phil reese told me earlier that the support of some states for militants exposes the notion of a global war on terror as a share of the militants and terrorists in the caucasus have always had close ties to afghanistan i think that unfortunately what this shows is while the globe and the world can talk about a war on terror in effect a lot of countries still support insurgents in other countries if they feel that their political interests and their leverage over that country may be helped by that and i'm afraid that a tragic reality of global politics. georgia's legal system is under fire for failing to match its claims of democratic development the number of prisoners a significant increase since president because really came to power with only seven

acquittals in twelve thousand legal cases over the last year lawyers claim it's practically impossible to get a fair trial. the people of georgia do seem to have the right to speak their mind. but if you are unfortunate enough to be detained it appears that for many all your rights own right out the window and should the case get to trial there can be very little hope of an acquittal no matter how good your lawyer is. last three years i've managed to do in only three cases but if we were to look at statistics thousands of cases heard in george's courts you would see. less than one percent of the numbers a recent human rights watch report on changes within georgia's legal system positive steps but there are a lot of concerns as well according to w. moves like increasing the prison term for administrative offenses from thirty days
3:12 pm
to three months come in contradiction with all democratic developments as international organizations insist curial can only be used as a last resort debates about the fairness of georgia's legal system continue but the numbers speak for themselves last year alone out of twelve thousand guilty verdicts only seven work whittles various international surveys show that nearly half of the population has no trust in their country's traditional system even the lawyers feel it's a lose lose game understandable since a lot of them end up behind bars themselves. saakashvili doesn't want an independent court system the prosecutor's office is dominant and police are the main instruments of power and political pressure there is no need for justice or lawyers he's trying to influence advocacy and when he fails he arrests or discriminates against lawyers who don't cooperate ever since mikhail saakashvili
3:13 pm
rose to power with the rose revolution his interests clearly point to the west you know a legal system based on fairness and justice does not seem to be a priority according to some the justice system in georgia today actually measures are worse than that of the soviet times. georgia holds first place for the highest number of prisoners for capital in europe which is a very somber fact i remember reagan used to call the soviet union the evil empire and then later george bush called georgia a beacon of democracy but how does these beacon have five times more prisoners per capita than the evil empire and certainly seems as though there are some areas where the beacon of truth does not want to shine kasserine as our of our teeny b.c. georgia. the new global economic policy will be a little table at a meeting of the american town of woods economists fund and sexperts and scholars from across the world will gather at the conference world renowned billionaire
3:14 pm
george soros well let's get more details now from of course for the lower list that joins us live from the summit venue could see that tell us more about what we can expect here is what is the significance of the timing the chosen venue. well essentially the chosen venue that you see this beautiful state and hotel behind me has a very historic purpose this is the setting of the one nine hundred forty four the famous grand goods conference that is actually second monetary system and policy for the world the international system this is where the international monetary fund was established this is where what is now the world bank was established and this is also when the united states dollar became the reserve currency for the world in exchange rates of countries all over the world were pegged to it now that was the historic conference that was when you united nations got together the allied countries during world war two at its peak to have this summit today it's a very different story this is as you mentioned billionaire george soros gathering together two hundred according to the think tank intellectuals this is
3:15 pm
a think tank funded by soros and fifty million dollars reportedly behind it gathered together to discuss where this is going next with the belief that the current economic thinking and the current world monetary policy systems in place are no longer working they no longer reflect what the world is like today and what the reality is like on the globe of course the world economies have this huge downturn but has this brought about any change in the way the the fund at least will be thinking about the global financial system for the future. well if the information that this think tank has been putting out is accurate then yes one of the main reasons why this gathering is taking place is because the belief is that after the financial collapse that shook the globe and it reverberated all across the world there hasn't been anything to replace the old system that reflects a new world where the united states is not the one singular power that dictates economic policy the way that it was in the one nine hundred forty four conference when the dollar was named the reserve currency the idea among thinkers here or at
3:16 pm
least behind this conference is that there needs to be a system that reflects that this is no longer you know polar world that this is a multi-polar world that brings developing nations into the conversation the bric nations brazil russia india china nations that now are fueling growth and have good economies around the world vision's of the developed nations such as the united states that were growth is really stagnated and where debts have been run up yet this is still the reserve currency this is still a large force as far as monetary policy so the idea among thinkers here is that there really needs to be a different system that engages and reflects the developing nations and the nations that are fueling a lot of the growth in the world that aren't as reflected in old policies that are considered by some of these thinkers according to them outdated or more from you no doubt over the next day or two thanks very much indeed in the meantime for that update. there in the states reporting from that financial conference about to start there in new hampshire thanks. well as well as what you see here on screen on our

least twenty seven protesters have reportedly been killed in clashes with police of state why demonstrations against the government continue for a third week security forces are reported to have used tear gas and live ammunition to stop the rallies from growing friday's become a traditional day of protest against autocratic rulers across the arab world. and in egypt thousands of people have once again taken to the streets in protest it comes as a sign of increasing frustration at the military's lack of progress in removing top figures of the previous regime from office well professor marc bolan an expert on the middle east at oxford says that the revolution has so far had limited impact on changing the country for the better. two months ago mubarak fell but the regime didn't call president mubarak and a few of his closest associates were probably right all the new regime out the transmission grid under arrest you can reallocate people in iraq and so you. can

from our correspondent in london. well this is as you say essentially a yes or no the victory for. the consortium of russian shareholders. it means that b.p. doesn't get what it wants that b.p. rosneft cannot sit at the moment go ahead we remember that swap part of the agreement refers to receiving five percent of b.p. and b.p. in exchange receiving nine and a half percent. and this is merely up holding an injunction that was already made earlier we saw a court say that the entire deal which also involves a tie up between b.p. and have to explore parts of the arctic shelf where there are believed to be huge reserves of oil. they've already said that that couldn't go ahead then b.p. came through and said well maybe if we can't go ahead with the exploration deal maybe we can just go ahead with the shuswap on its own and of course has today are
