11:00 pm
hi guys welcome to shell and tell. partner our guests have to say on the topic now i want to hear. just a lot of his video on our twitter turf a lot of the questions are please post on you tube every monday and on thursday the show long response is like the. law and john are going to washington d.c. and here's what's coming up tonight on the big picture japan's greatest fears have unfortunately been realized officials announced radiation levels now stands about the same degree as churn noble so does this mean for the country already struggling back on its feet meanwhile the money out of war continues on capitol hill who will
11:01 pm
be the first to loosen their grip and who's budget climate's out of our mountain of debt plus even though american employers may be given male and female employees equal opportunities without paying them equally i'll explore the growing gap from what men and women earn in this country. you need to know this republicans will likely vote on paul ryan's two thousand and twelve budget this week you know the one the benefits only the top one percent of americans that sells off medicare to for profit health insurance company leeches it hands an enormous tax cut to millionaires and billionaires and sinks or a nation deeper into debt and that's not stopping progress is in the house of
11:02 pm
introducing their own budget one this serves the other ninety nine percent of the american people a progressive twenty twelve budget saves money by ending the wars in iraq and afghanistan. it ends taxpayer subsidies to transnational oil corporations it closes tax loopholes it raises the estate tax on the super rich it ends the bush tax cuts like driving a stake through the heart of a vampire and adding a surtax on millionaires in america and with that extra money progress is will invest one point four five trillion dollars into job creation green energy and education as well as create public health insurance option unlike the republican budget proposal the congressional budget proposal or office rather reports that the progressive budget will actually a limit eight our nation's deficit entirely by twenty forty so with these two roads
11:03 pm
in front of america paul ryan's paid by corporate owned republicans and the other by progressives looking out for the rest of us isn't pretty clear which one is best for our nation joining me now to explore this tale of two budgets and how the debate will unfold is our old friend of one of the finest progressive legislators in the house of representatives organ congressman peter de fazio congressman de fazio welcome back to our program or shape the opportunity first you know kind of a set up question here why didn't the democrats deal with the budget last year when they held the house. so it's kind of a said tale you know after we were marched over the cliff accepting the first we did the stimulus with three hundred forty billion dollars of tax cuts having eliminated bunch of investment education transportation infrastructure real job creation by the democratic leadership so obama could get three republican senate
11:04 pm
votes then we were marched over the cliff accepting the senate version of health care reform without at least national exchanges certainly without a public plan option you know and then and then came the cap and trade bill the dream of wall street let's monetize the carbon emissions and and begin gambling in them trillion dollar market. the house was at the point of saying look you know we're not passing any more bills unless they're actually going to come up in the senate in a form where we can have a meaningful discussion and the senate just couldn't get there because of the unconstitutional rule that they have to have sixty votes to get up in the morning and say the prayer right so it's nothing happened well paul ryan's budget due to our nation. it's a pretty extraordinary document incredibly duplicitous first as you pointed out
11:05 pm
earlier. twenty forty we would still be running very large deficits under the ryan plan but what it would do is enrich the top one percent and particularly the top one tenth of one percent of people those were in well over a billion dollars a year reduce their tax rates right up front by more than thirty percent and make those cuts permanent reduce corporate tax rates he dances around because he comes from an egg state but actually if you read into the details he keeps all the subsidies in agriculture would still pay people not to grow things corporate farmers we would cut back on those other wasteful spending like women infant children you know feeding young pregnant moms or young babies and the food stamp program which unfortunately record number of people in my district need right now to get because of the crummy economy and then you know continue pretty much business as usual at the pentagon all he takes is the proposed obama cuts which is
11:06 pm
just a little bit of a whitewash not that significant nothing about the wars the war spending and other weapons systems we don't need it will never use and then finally you know he privatizing medicare yeah and that's the most ironic part of what he proposes is it's an extraordinary member democrats were just takes cory ated for having set up exchanges that would be regulated by the federal government well they're actually state changes and fortunately not nationally we don't have a public plan option but yeah they'll be some state exchanges that are somewhat regulated that was that was called socialism under obamacare and then the huge cuts in medicare that is we're going to go with the lower the profit margins margins on these private medicare advantage plans well the republicans keep that reform they're going to still lower the profit margins on the medicare medicare private events plans i.e. they're going to cut it. care and then they're going to tell people fifty five and younger sorry you may have been paying into medicare every working day of your life
11:07 pm
it's not going to be there for you instead you will go to a government exchange and you will get a you know a government approved plan which won't have any limits on what it can charge for your premiums won't have any limits on who they can discriminate against in terms of preexisting condition or age or is the eggs or anything else and will pay a set amount toward you or toward you or. your premium unbelievable it's amazing congressman we just have a couple of minutes very quickly i'm getting calls you know we do a three hour radio show every day and we have a message board over its common and we're getting slammed by people saying that president obama touches or harms medicare or social security is part of some kind of compromise of the republicans that literally people who worked their butts off for him and gave money to him are just going to walk away bowl progressive's got
11:08 pm
forty thousand signatures in two hours today on a similar petition people saying that they would withhold both the nation's and support but wall street wants that two point seven trillion dollars money in social security and they can do a lot of good or harm to a presidential campaign that needs a billion bucks you've said that president obama is not acting like a democrat does this all tie together and what you mean by that well i mean all the pundits are saying he just figures his challenge is to the right and he wants to be sort of center right he wants to be the angela merkel of the u.s. i guess it's not working well for her he just lost a bit of the action and i forget the name of the state right yeah exactly so that seems to be what's going on plus the themes they have is incredibly conflict of ours and his negotiating style is ok here i'll give you everything you want now let's start targeting. and that's what he did on the tax cuts with the republicans that's what he just did now with this budget compromise and we're very very
11:09 pm
concerned we're going to go with his two thousand and twelve plan and he's got to draw the line i mean come on this is a program created by democrats medicare it took seniors out of poverty it created you know a healthier senior class that is not twenty two percent in poverty and no private insurance company wants to sell premium policies and seniors a reasonable price so let's not pretend let's not enrich that industry let's take it to seniors let's not invented here on his watch if he stood up and said medicare will not end on my watch as president i think a lot of us would be standing up and cheer and absolutely on this side to congressman peter de fazio who joins such a fine job in congress thank you so much for joining us tonight. you know a budget isn't just.
11:10 pm
it's time for our daily poll your chance to tell us what you think here's today's question as to budgets well we take the republican road to ruin or the road to prosperity possible answers are a the republican budget the benefits the top one percent sells medicare to for profit health insurance company leeches or be impressive budget that gives one point five trillion dollars to jobs green energy schools and a public health insurance option that's going to be so far it's split about half and half you could log on and so on are going to accommodate us know what you think the poll be open until. the nuclear situation in japan is now officially as bad as was churned elbel in one thousand nine hundred six japanese nuclear regulatory regulators excuse me
11:11 pm
yesterday finally came clean and up the scale of because hastert feet to a seven on a scale of one to seven. a seven rating on previously and that's the vision of the nuclear industry to see if you can see made a calculation of the amount of radioactive particles released into the air from the fukushima nuclear power plant based on its analysis of the gate in the condition of the grafters and it met with the standard of level seven. a seven rating had previously only been used to describe one of them in the history of nuclear energy churn all i can add to the unfortunate category tepco the corporation that operates the plant japan and warned that the amount of radiation leaking from the crippled daiichi facility might actually eventually exceed the total amount of radiation dispersed after chernobyl so what does this new development mean kevin camps the radioactive waste watchdog of the nuclear he joins me now kevin welcome to the program thank you for having me great to have you here why the upgrade in
11:12 pm
severity now that's a really good question greenpeace iran has been calling for this seven on the eye on a scale for weeks for three weeks the japanese government has finally three weeks later gotten around to doing it and this is based on old information this is based still on information from many days or even weeks ago and this disaster if he doesn't get holding other going to have to add an eight or nine to the scale of the a scale come from is it logarithmic or linear or is it just some magic numbers that somebody it's a stranger an arbitrary scale and it comes from the international atomic energy agency the boosters for atomic power this is the united nations agency whose mandate is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons technology but to promote the spread of nuclear power technology so it's a very sick it's a frantic and very dangerous maw in this international treaty and you're right they may need to add extra levels to this thing at fukushima we have three reactors in various stages of meltdown two of which have damaged containment structures and we
11:13 pm
also have one pool that's been on fire and others that could catch on fire at turn noble by comparison there was one reactor that exploded and burned. how does radiation cause cancer birth defects and other problems well it's very energetic material at a microscopic level in the form of gamma radiation which is like x. rays it blasts through your body damaging the molecules of your cells your tissues your d.n.a. and it can introduce changes or damage that can then turn into a cancer if a fetus is exposed to such radiation and it can do damage to various organs that are in development causing birth the facts and then the genetic material for future generations can also be altered or harmed so there are various forms of radioactivity the internal emitters are especially dangerous and gamma radiation blasts through and doesn't stay on it but these internal emitters things like alpha particles like plutonium stay in the body for the rest of your life and do their
11:14 pm
damage slowly particles that can knock a hole and knock knock so maddening earth i mean are gone or so the scene out of a different d.n.a. radioactive poisons go to different parts of the human body so that you know active cesium one thirty seven goes to human muscle tissue strontium ninety goes to bones tony i'm can go to bones can go to the gonads a speck of plutonium in the lawns a microscopic speck can cause lung cancer and typically does is there anything we can do to mitigate remedy the effects of of radiation. not really there are potassium iodide tablets that they're trying to do against one of the scores of radioactive poisons that escape you and. i had on one thirty one given and given and given the all it takes is one alpha particle one gamma ray knocking one piece of a d.n.a. strand out of whack in a way that or maybe a couple of them in a way that causes that that cell then when it goes through my toes is or is that
11:15 pm
meiosis one that divides to become cancerous. one one way. is it accurate to say that there is no such thing as a safe level of radiation it is the national academy of sciences here in the u.s. for decades now most recently in two thousand and five in the seventh iteration of this report called the biological effects of ionizing radiation as affirmed again and again that there is no safe threshold of radiation goes right of these why this insanity on radio and television every single night well it's only one hundred twenty two rads i guess pseudo or not or miller adds one hundred twenty whereas nuki pretty fast but you know or are geo we've only got to go you know four hundred tries background i guess will break of the i don't can it why it why is this being treated like like you know sports scores well the nuclear power industry is one of the biggest players certainly in the united states but also internationally both at
11:16 pm
the government level but also within the media and they sponsor the media with their contribution laws that underwriting their commercials so they have way too much sway in the last minute any end game here how do you see this thing resolved well they have to still or a month into this thing incredibly they still have to bring those three reactor units under control they have to stop those meltdowns by cooling those cores they have to prevent the pools from boiling dry in the waste from catching on fire the only way that they have come up with to do this is to pour massive amounts of water on to the reactors and that water has to go out somewhere well they're trying to contain at this point sixty thousand tons of highly radioactive water that grows bigger each day that they continue this cooling process they have this charged tens of thousands of tons of radioactive water into the ocean already amazing kevin thanks so much for being with us tonight i think you're driving by. so with three nuclear disasters thirty three mile island sure noble and fukushima or fukushima is
11:17 pm
an area and they have all been progressively more damaging is the time to stop ignoring the risks and admit that there's no such thing as safe nuclear energy i think so no more nukes. u.s. chamber leaks scandal continues as new evidence of a deadly serious and a well funded lot by millionaires and billionaires to savage sabotage liberals emerges on life. let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right.
11:18 pm
i think rocket feeding on the oil. whenever the government says they're going to keep you safe get ready because you have your freedom. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear see some other part of it and realized everything you thought you knew you don't i'm sorry there's a big. more
11:19 pm
damage you materials being discovered in the ongoing chamber leaks scandal earlier this week investigative reporter with think progress leaf broke the story of the u.s. chamber of commerce and tracking with private data security foreign firms to launch cyber attacks against threaten family members of and discredit members
11:20 pm
of progressive organizations like the u.s. chamber watch sci you and move on dot org not to mention center for american progress of lee himself the latest find is a powerpoint presentation listing dozens of organizations and individuals with the chambers said these are their words discredit confuse shame combat infiltrate fracture in addition the u.s. congress is currently looking into the matter as well as whether or not these private data security firms are also contracting with the us government last week in an armed services subcommittee hearing. and johnson pressed terry aki acting assistant secretary for the department of defense office of networks and information integration about current government contracts for the firm was involved in the chamber leak scandal you know what and i would like to request copies of been you know contracts between a department of defense and the country to go to three country that i mentioned
11:21 pm
h.b. gary federal pell and clear technology technology would you be able to prove me with that information and also be chairman of the committee. i don't have that information directly myself but certainly i can i have staff research that and we'll get back to you with an answer to that question but i think it's a very important issue that i'm not planning on. sweeping under the roof. but i want to least get to those countries. in a list and determine. been used would be reached for more on this developing story i'm joined by the man who broke the farm reporter and blogger at the progress program blogger extraordinary we welcome well i say here thank you always great having you. this power point behind us some of the
11:22 pm
pieces to this can you there's actually i think several pieces to it that will go through and you explain this thing thing to us is for example look at this organization strategy and i see you know these organizations here. the that's going on here well you know we initially it was another of the four or five proposals in power points that laid out all of the different strategies the hacking the spying the kind of following around the members of. the family members the people targeted by this but some of the slides like the previous one brought in a scope originally we thought only move on think progress as you know you were targets of the chambers attorneys and these private security firms. but as the slide shows they're looking at a larger set of people they're looking at progressive strategist joe trippi they're looking at basically the entire labor movement they're looking at the courage campaign of progressive activists in rooms robert greenwald bread bloggers just did
11:23 pm
so that's brad out in california is a friend of mine and you know is that yes this is the. these are individuals and this is a giant multi multi hundred million dollar a multibillion dollar the chamber the largest big. business lobby in the world paid off according to come down i'm sorry own a fine you know these this is the largest lobby group in the world they want to mentally change the outcome of the two thousand said midterm elections by running the largest independent expenditure campaign in mid-term history. and here they are through their attorneys working with the. military contractors to not only litigate against some of their detractors as you can see in the following slide. there they're discussing these tactics as an additional. way to go after this this this looks like the kind of the kind of the kind of organizational strategy or structure thing that you'd see in a military operation where you'd say ok that's saddam hussein that's his number two
11:24 pm
guy you know that kind of thing the palace here one of the three security firms contracted here they actually specialize in these kind of data sets and they provided a demo of what they are capable of doing by taking a similar slide like this and charting out the relationships between iran and all the dummy companies in iran creates to funnel money and get around the sanctions that the u.s. has placed on them and according to these e-mails that demo showing what they did to iran for the u.s. government is what sold the chamber in the first place incredible i've got a training video from the tea party here that i want to share with you let's let's take a look at this. i get on amazon i type in liberal books i go through and i say one star one star one star the flip side if you go to a conservative libertarian whatever go to their products and give them five stars ok so literally. i put a star on i don't read so that's how it works ok there's places others where your
11:25 pm
kids i promise you this is where your kids are going to from asian rotten tomatoes flixster was a place where you can rate movies ok so when you type in movies on healthcare or doctors and health care i don't want to go to come up i don't want michael moore's to come out so i always give bad ratings that's been about thirty minutes a day just so that's guerilla tactics and there's a place the cops are going to tell you is the author of twenty one books and and somebody is in six movies that are in for sale right now running it was a that's a little offensive. and you come from a certain point of view you're a progressive and and they're coming for you and this is an ideological hole eyes and war i can tell you about i mean i've i've seen this happen on my reviews not just there but in other places. austin james the person who made this film talking about him fantastic filmmaker he's not australian he really gets this better than a lot of americans do but this video of us and james saying this is a stretch this grill attack strategy is a new i've seen it very poor time so he basically has been going around the country
11:26 pm
giving the identical speech over and over and over again the tea party groups and this group from the pays his salary american majority they started just in the days after obama was elected to help organize and create the tea party movement they've got chapters and offices in sixteen states they were the driving force organizing the first pro governor walker rallies during the union fight they're there in the background you never see their names on the details and they're found every single penny of their donors through a firm called donors trust but there they were founded by an operative name it. eric o'keefe has been working with the koch brothers and a wealthy donor named howie rich since the early ninety's that is the real estate guy that he keeps throwing money in oregon when i was living in oregon that's right it is heavily focused on or yeah it's very interesting cause it was just like a test state you could do small enough that they could do things cheaply. how can progressive's and even middle of the road americans i mean when one side of the
11:27 pm
political spectrum is literally under such a severe heavy concerted wealth wanted to act you could argue that it's not just aggressive says suffer it's all over america how do you respond it's not easy i mean the very first step is is knowing that there is an attack and this is a guerrilla war and that american majority in these groups are using these underhanded tactics they hide in the background they don't advertise their names they clearly don't disclose their donors and they're doing this to shake the public you whenever they're manipulating amazon dot com or even your books online they're doing so through the tea party or through these quote unquote grassroots groups you never really know who's driving them so the first part is at least understanding that there is a well funded effort to manipulate online sites like look at petey and amazon to hack into progressive organizations the first part is knowing and you're doing a great job with that leaf on thanks so much for dropping by thanks for having the time and thanks for the absolutely incredible reporting and what you're doing here
11:28 pm
you're one of my heroes thanks thanks so much for having me thank you what we're seeing right now with this scandal is nothing more than millionaires and billionaires throwing around their power in america to destroy activists and average people using their hundreds of millions of dollars in corporate cash in our elections isn't enough they also need to crush any organization that's willing to stand in their way. crazy alert if you thought the study was the pinnacle of human ingenuity thank you again let me introduce you to this slob stopper a new invention that allows humans to no longer after worry about whether or not the food they're showing into their mouths is also spilling all over the earth their clothing has this ever happened to you. introducing this mob stuff for get
