6:30 pm
michel and tell me alone a show we've heard our guests not to say on the topic now i want to hear from our audience this is going to you feel good video responses are to twitter for part of the questions that we impose on you tube every monday and on thursday in the show and your responses during the week the slate your books the. you know sometimes you see this story and it seems so. you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else and here's some other part of it and realize
6:31 pm
that everything you thought you knew going into our. all right side presides tool time award and tonight we've got a double winner fox news and sean hannity the mouthpiece of the g.o.p. is out of the get this friday night sean hannity is going to host an hour long program that looks at the left wing media bias here in the u.s. just take a look at their very new and very slick promo for this show ok standards groundless attacks like left wing chill conservatives thought criminalize conservative speech right sean calls out the mainstream and exposes the shocking truth don't be used by
6:32 pm
these to please me. yeah i'm really sure that this show was sean hannity is going to be very fair and balanced because we all know the fox news never ever take sides right give me a break but what's really funny about this program exposing left wing bias is that it's going to air just a few days after sean hannity's argument last night by the democratic congressman from minnesota sean was really upset with congressman keith ellison after he said in public that fox news has a habit of inciting islamophobia and racial and ethnic animosity here's part of that debate from last night this is an incredible charge this is a charge of bigotry you said fox. i gave you a time out of the road in your time on the right i'm going to quote you show you said fox always kill yourself. to incite a shot at americans along religious lines scapegoating the muslim community that on one example i mean one example is the king hearings that peter
6:33 pm
king did you refer to if you talk about everytime you talk about terrorism and radicalization you always attach the word muslim to what are slavic. carroty actually claimed that fox news never incites religious intolerance this summer would not watch his own channel not realize that comments made on fox news and by their hosts are placed on line for the entire world to see and review even if they didn't catch it live on air here's parts news not inciting religious intolerance. but the muslim brotherhood isn't just operating overseas i've been with them here we showed you in their own words that their goals include the transformation of america into an islamic state the destruction of the western world well i want to show you their branches are spinoffs so they've created operating in the united states and you have soldiers you know you could star in for the military to have
6:34 pm
special debriefings of muslim army civilian officers anybody enlisted because we're going to be deployed in a foxhole we're going to be secular now because i got to go and i got to know the guy next to me is not going to want to kill but there's a reason there was a certain group of people there at this hour nine eleven it wasn't just stress one person it was what religion not all muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are muslims seventy percent of americans don't want that boss down there so i think you . yes all right thank you very soon there was no why has that but why are you saying inappropriate. thank you understand i don't know right i think. so shocked hannity you still want to play the fox news doesn't have a habit of inciting islamophobia just goes for
6:35 pm
a little clips proves you wrong i believe we we can find many many more fox news makes money by trying to incite islamophobia and racial and ethnic animosity and that's why fox news and sean hannity are tonight's told time winners. and you have a name pastor terry jones we interviewed this florida pastor when he first threatened to burn the koran on september eleventh of two thousand and ten and although jones never actually carried out the koran burning himself after receiving a phone call from secretary of defense robert gates this march he presided over burning by a fellow church member and those actions carry severe backlash with protests in afghanistan that led to the deaths of eight u.n. workers and as if that didn't set off alarms for this pastor he's now decided to create conflict again this time he's planning a protest in front of one of the largest mosques in the u.s. christine is there and has the story. the airborne michigan is a suburb just about thirty miles southwest of detroit home of the original ford
6:36 pm
motor company in fact i'm walking along forward road right now but here in the midwest of the united states a lot of people say it looks more at times like the middle east because here in dearborn out of the one hundred thousand residents forty thousand or arab american there is the largest muslim population in the country and also the largest mosque you can see it here right behind me. people who live here say it's a peaceful place but many are concerned about what is scheduled to take place right here tomorrow remember florida pastor terry jones the one who threatened to burn the qur'an on september eleventh cancel that but then ended up burning one last month well he has scheduled a protest here so he's protesting against radical islam also on good friday where many christians would ten short and the mosque is that right between two churches and see one of them right here
6:37 pm
a lot of people are concerned and are asking many questions today they're wondering will there be violence will there be riots and many are you asking even a bigger question how will the actions of one man reflect america across the world in dearborn christine frizz now are two. top people like pastor terry jones maybe blatant and offensive and their religious intolerance you'll still hear on a regular basis from mainstream politicians that is is a christian nation but the numbers will show you the different religions are on the rise from islam to atheism so as christian americans celebrate easter this weekend as pastor terry jones will be protesting against islam a large group of atheists are going to be having their own gathering in des moines iowa it's the annual atheist convention and this here they're expecting more participants than ever so what's it all about well earlier i caught up with david silverman president of american atheists and i first asked him to tell us more
6:38 pm
about this convention what the purpose is and what they talk about. well the point is to bring the b.s. from them one out of the closet and into a single location where they can meet and greet each other and learn about each other a lot of people who are theistic a lot of religious leaders to understand that for atheists a cab or in one group that's pretty rare i mean christians do it every sunday when they go to church and jews do it every saturday when they go to temple atheists don't do that so we need this centralization we need this socialisation and we bring in. there are lots and lots of atheists in the morning. about three hundred thousand in greater iowa and we bring them in and we give them some of the best speakers in the industry we're actually premiering a hollywood movie starring with tyler tonight. and we're going to motivate them and show them that they are not alone in the state of iowa but if there are over three
6:39 pm
hundred thousand atheists in the state alone isn't conventionally bringing about six hundred seven hundred people does that mean that they're still there that have taboo surrounding atheism that people don't necessarily want to shell up or be public about it. there's a tremendous amount of taboo around being in atheism and that's one of the in fact that is the number one thing that we're trying to fight there's absolutely nothing wrong with being an atheist statistically speaking we're more atheists in this country than there are jews plus looms plus hindus plus goodness combined and doubled yet nobody thinks they know they know any atheists in fact every single person in this country knows more easiest and they think they know because so much of us so many of us are closet and private about it and that is the problem now we're having in this country the reason we are receiving such infringements on
6:40 pm
separation of church and state is not because there are so many more of them going to us it's because so many of us don't say who we are and that's one of the main points that we're trying to drag out and yes this is only bringing in seven hundred to a thousand people but it is our largest american convention ever and why you're an immortal and why is it a though the most more atheists don't say who they are what is it exactly that they fear i mean could it be politics if you like the political spectrum you'll see that most politicians out there will say that this is a christian nation right the majority of our political debates often centered around planned parenthood gay marriage and abortion so is it a fear of these politicians or is it a fear of the churches themselves. well remember the politicians are reaction there in effect because it's the bigotry against atheists the bigotry against the atheists comes from religion itself religion does not want you to like atheists
6:41 pm
because the more you talk to us more we make sense so the politicians are the effect oh yeah there's a lot of bigotry we are the last group in america against whom it is politically correct to hate we're the last will ask you but you can hate and still be politically correct and and that's what american atheists is trying to change and the way we change that is harboring us out of the closet while i drank to differ with you there in terms of the last i heard of that it's still politically correct to hate because like i just said if you look at the biggest political debate in this country it's still very ok within the republican party to hate on the gay population it's obviously still very ok within the republican party to hate on the muslim population within america you know right now there's a huge debate because pastor terry jones the famous now qur'an burning pastor wants to hold a rally in michigan in front of the largest mosque in this country. right there though there's a lot of hate in this country and we have way too much of it
6:42 pm
a lot of it comes from christianity a lot of it comes from other religions and we're not book about it and there are a lot there are a lot of politicians that are eating against muslims but the majority of people think that the people who hate muslims are people who hate jews but people who hate christians are backwards people who hate atheists well that's just fine it's not just about republicans with democrats too and it's not so much hate it's ignoring us pretending that we're not here when we outnumber muslims six to one six to one and yet we have no or isn't nation in congress and yet the politicians will not even know when when president obama said we're a country of all these people and nonbelievers everybody was up in arms simply because he knowledge our existence that's a problem so yes there's hatred against a lot of people but the political correctness of hatred against atheists trumps
6:43 pm
them all even scientologists muslims all of them we're we're dropping them now we're trying to stop oh let me ask you some things i know that obviously you're trying to make their presence felt and last year of course there is a lot of controversy over a number of bus ads this year you know there are some billboards out there promoting this atheist convention that basically said we know there is no god we know your rights would you say is that the same type of indoctrination that you also see from churches though as in the terms of not accepting that people might have a different opinion or that they might have different beliefs and saying that you know this is fact. no there is no indoctrination on a billboard you can't indoctrinate somebody on a billboard you were indoctrinated somebody by taking a baby and starting when they're just a couple days old and making them christian christening them and telling them they're christians beginnings that's indoctrination circumcising and that's
6:44 pm
indoctrination we're putting up a billboard challenging to people who go to church but our atheists the closet the atheist who are so closeted that they go to church we're challenging them because all those numbers that are spewed out and you have three hundred thousand in iowa that's people who say they're non-theistic we think that number is a war by the people who are non-theistic but call themselves christians because they're afraid of pressures and the stereotypes are all in it so we're calling those people out there saying hey get off your knees stop writing your checks stop were lying to your friends in your family if you don't believe in god stand up and come to the american atheists convention instead right dave i want to thank you very much for joining us that i hope that your connection is successful and that more people that do come out of hiding are out of the closet if they are too scared then to admit it thank you very much for joining us. thank you very much however
6:45 pm
probably make up a drink that so i had on an ice shelf a fall out recently looks at the attitudes towards torture here in the u.s. and you might be surprised to learn what teens think about it can all stone newsweek's white house correspondent joins me with more in just a minute. let's not forget that we sat in a parked car right. i think. well. we have the government says they're going to keep him safe get ready for freedom.

6:47 pm
hey guys welcome to shell and tell me alone the show we heard with our guests have to say on the topic now i want to hear audio just go on you tube the video response or the twitter first part of the question that we post on you tube every monday and on thursday the show long response to. let your voice be heard. just a few days ago the man of reggae hope california had an awkward and seemingly totally unnecessary run in with local police law in el dushanbe was standing in his garage when he noticed some police activity in a house next door to what when police started to arrest three men and a woman on their property who she began filming this incident from his garage with his cell phone camera but he was then a grow up we greeted by a police officer who wanted to sheen's cellphone.
6:48 pm
should. take this. over. and we're going. to start. now as far as the outcome of this incident shane was handcuffed by police for refusing to hand over his cellphone or he wasn't actually arrested just fine now the officer in the video scott gates has been questioned for considering the cell phone video as evidence and on a larger scale the entire incident is now being investigated by the police department's internal affairs unit and frankly there should be an investigation of filming a police officer is not illegal at least not in california how this cop uses typical intimidation tactics to get an innocent bystander to hand over his cell phone by threatening him with arrest and this is just one of the latest cases where police get caught on camera and
6:49 pm
a photographer. cops now filling police is only illegal so far in three states and maryland massachusetts and illinois thanks in part assume technicalities with wiretapping loopholes which state that both parties involved in any sort of filming must consent but ironically cellphone video some other states were filming cops is technically legal still people behind bars so here's my question when we have proof of cops acting as if they're above the law should the public have the right to document the police's actions when there's nobody to check on how police are behaving citizens are taking it upon themselves to make sure the cops act accordingly and not like they're above the law by the way if there's any first century where technology is everywhere so are you cameras are some sort or another if it's not cell phones and it's a surveillance camera let's go back to this incident in california not only is filming illegal in the state but the man was standing on his own property why he got any sort of reprimand at all is befuddling to me so in this case i'd say that
6:50 pm
an internal investigation is the least at the police department partment in view. now you'd think if you asked most people what they think about torture they'd say it's wrong all right well a new poll out by the red cross that looks at torture and the attitudes u.s. citizens have about the use of torture on enemy combatants might surprise you according to a survey forty two percent of adults believe that it's acceptable to torture the enemy and that's a lot of people but the more alarming number is that sixty percent of teens from the ages of twelve to seventeen think it's perfectly fine to torture the enemy so how do we explain this especially the age disparity join me to discuss it is daniel stone newsweek's white house correspondent daniel thanks so much for being here and i do for have you know it's a little disturbing when you hear results like this especially that sixty percent of teenagers think that it's ok to torture people i grew up always thinking torture is wrong i mean what in the past historically hasn't torture always been looked at
6:51 pm
as wrong it has been for several decades many decades i mean since world war two after world war two was when we saw the geneva conventions really be a response a global response to say no more torture but over the past ten years twenty years this new generation that we're talking about they've had new influences on them certainly they've had a new context in the world after nine eleven and these are people who have come of age after the war on terror started globally so let's let's break that down right let's talk about the war on terror and some of the elements that might be attributing to this how much is the bush administration to blame the administration that then told you that there's this enemy out there that's like an enemy we've never fought before and the only way to save american lives is to torture them but certainly a factor remember after nine eleven when the war in iraq started in two thousand and three we heard a lot from our government leaders the bush administration and our covertly agencies certainly the cia the f.b.i. trust us we're going to get the best intelligence we can and we also heard from
6:52 pm
them some intelligence we cannot get the conventional way we have people in captivity we cannot. just ask them questions like we used to when someone would rob a bank we need to use new techniques we need to adapt the way we're getting information from these people we need to be agile because they're being agile with how they're attacking us so that was certainly a consideration over the past and now you mentioned also in your piece here and you used you know a few other analysts too and their writings and they said that the need plays a large role in this because the media has become so much more graphic but i'm just i'm curious as to what you think about that because personally as a journalist i think that showing the images from abu ghraib that that is her job as a journalist you're supposed to put those images out there because that's the truth but then is the media done just not doing its job in terms of well saying that this is wrong and actually questioning why this was going on certainly it didn't help that a lot of that information was out there of course you're right it needed to be out there that it was being done perhaps it goes badly we're talking about to the
6:53 pm
government that those things happen certainly they didn't want those things to be seen if they knew things were going to be seeing photos of. details about waterboarding or one time it will be prison the techniques there they probably would have thought twice about what effect those images were going to have on opinions in america but also the opinions of america's enemies people using footage like that to train and recruit new fighters to attack america now we know that those types of images don't help us they only make it more dangerous for our troops for america's image abroad and yet i think of the obama administration is doing a big just service especially to this younger generation by not then prosecuting people within the bush administration for the crimes they committed for reiterating to the u.s. that torture is wrong i also want to play a clip of a very popular t.v. show from the last decade and i think my have something to do with it and take a look. to make sure it was. right for me to meet with the partners i'll be with the bloggers to. tell me where people work. and
6:54 pm
tell me where he is you. know. how do you break twenty four i mean that show was really popular i was just telling you my friends and i we actually watched it religiously we had monday night twenty four parties where everybody would come over the lights were damn you weren't allowed to talk or you were kicked out of the room because we were also in thralls with this show it honestly it made it look exciting but it's wrong but then what do you do is that art it is a great show it's very dramatic it often is not reality but you're right it hasn't helped with these attitudes when you see jack bauer out there you know pressuring someone torturing them to give up information it gives you this kind of warped view of how counterterrorism actually works sometimes it's like that most of the time it's not but seeing him do it seem to be successful at it and seeing him stop a bombing or some sort of other attack certainly makes you think wow maybe it isn't such a big crowd and of course they're going to reports out there too about how the creators
6:55 pm
of the show are very close with the bush administration and we were theorizing earlier today to you with my entire crew about how much of an effect that might have there like this make torture look cool is that that's going to save american lives in the making of people why do you think this age disparity exists so much is not because these people i mean the teenagers now twelve to seventeen they might not even remember september eleventh or george bush all right well a lot of them don't a lot of them were alive you know where they were alive but a lot of them don't remember what happened before we also can't discount the fact that you know teenagers have a different worldview than adults they don't really understand exactly what war is in the same way that adults think about it terrorism attacks fighting overseas these are all big issues if someone were to ask you if you were fourteen a fortune was ok you might say yeah you know maybe in some cases because you clearly haven't thought it through you haven't seen the pictures you haven't heard the historical accounts yet so there's probably room for that kind of growth when you get into your late teens and early twenty's is that just because teenagers
6:56 pm
themselves don't know yet or is that because so many americans these days are removed from. wars if you think about it it's a tiny percentage of our population that are actually fighting abroad and are affected by war so that's one of the views we heard from some of the people we talked to for the article the americans are removed they don't know the costs of war now you know it's an image we see on t.v. very few people know so one are you doing a lot fewer than in previous wars certainly in vietnam where you know if you were a teenager a twenty year old male you had you know as good a chance as anyone of being drafted or the worst kind of infiltrated the national psyche in a way that we're just not seeing well hopefully these attitudes especially amongst the teenagers some people say you know the older you get the less chance there is for any change but i definitely hope that these young people will be able to change their views on that as torture is not. thank you so much for joining us here and before we go tonight it's time for our tweet of the day larry flynt has a new book out with a very long title it's called one nation under sex how the private lives of
