longer back to the big picture i'm sorry coming up in this half hour it's a story about power money and the wonderfulness of greed iran's film adapted bestselling novel atlas shrugged is now in second week at the box office so it's a hit or miss plus throw it out that old computer monitor may do more harm than you know details on how each crash is not only destroying american landfills but also killing people in third world countries and it seems like there's a copycat among republican governors and i said nearly take out scott walker wants to pass these same city stripping legislation as michigan's rick snyder.
9:31 pm
last week the movie atlas shrugged opened in theaters across the country the first part of a trilogy based on iran's novel that was shrugged written back in one thousand nine hundred fifty seven they believe that. we can't afford to allow the expansion of the company which produces too much of the medical books. still bills that are not getting my mail and find a way to fix rather alyssa rosen bob a russian immigrant to change her name to iran when she came to america based several of her novels heroes on a serial killer she fought over as a superman her word because as she wrote of howard roark the hero of her book the fountain head quote he was born without the ability to consider others and quote that serial killer william edward hickman kidnapped murdered and dismembered a twelve year old girl in one nine hundred twenty seven around the time rand was developing your philosophy and writing her first book. rand wrote about serial
9:32 pm
killer hitmen quote other people do not exist for him and he does not see why they should he has no regard for all the society hold sacred a consciousness all his own he has the true innate psychology of a superman why because rand wrote he could never feel other people this idea that human society should be run by an unfeeling elite of producers or modern republicans called job creators the rest of us call c.e.o.'s millionaires struck quite a chord particularly among young people just sitting adolescents what if what if selfishness is the ultimate virtue and society should be run by superman was only goal is to make money like this comment from the hero of the movie. let me say you're in trouble risler your only goal is to make money my goal is to make money. there you go rand went on to say that caring for others is moral cannibalism her words and that people who do good things for reasons other than making money are
9:33 pm
again her words lice parasites and looters in fact here's what she told mike wallace a few years before she died while living on social security and taking medicare money to treat her lung cancer. writes every important moral leader in man's history has taught us that we should love one another right is this kind of love if you are blind if. it is the moral it is that they are so and then if a man is weak or a woman is weak then she is beyond he is beyond love he said he does not he said need be young there are a very ill it has been in this world by your standards who are worthy of love unfortunately yes they. so would society really be better if we were all selfish and those among us who are both the smartest and the most selfish rose to the ultimate power trampling the rice and the parasites. manda kerry saw the movie she's a reporter the daily caller she joins me now to share her take on will shrug amanda
9:34 pm
i see you again having me thanks for joining us do you really think that if all the c.e.o.'s went on strike the society would collapse i mean this is the basic promise of the book and movie i think in the alice our society yes and it did obviously i think. the modern world today is obviously very different so i don't know if this is starting to collapse but i think that the narrative that she sets up is very realistic. while if you have that produces this idea the ones that are supporting everyone at the bottom that are sort of accepting. the jobs are or you know you have you have the people at the top the c.e.o.'s the millionaires paying into the system and sort of supporting everyone at the bottom if you have all that taken away and they just shrug and they aren't producing anything their are not contributing to society and if you don't have anyone else pick up the slack no society is going ok so we've got you know health care for example stephen j. hensley runs the first five years in the job he took four hundred seventy seven million dollars before him for ten years to one point seven billion dollars are you
9:35 pm
seriously telling me that if these two guys went away that there wouldn't be somebody who would step in and do the job for say. i you know that's a credit and. you know is that true of every i mean what if all five hundred of the c.e.o.'s of the fortune five hundred companies went on strike don't you think that there would be somebody in each one of those companies smart enough to step in take the job and probably do it for half of what they're being paid i don't know if they would do it for her or they're being paid for my experience people that you know accept a job from someone in front of them sort of demand the same case scale and this is sort of how the society works that's how dogs work that's how far you are you know at the c.e.o. level and it's not like competition it's like the old boy network because they get these pay committees on their board that they themselves appoint. it's sort of. in nature ok selfishness ok all right our bodies are our are for example you know
9:36 pm
we're part of nature we're here we are in our bodies are our incredible collections of cooperation at liverpool so the kidneys the kidneys cooperate with the adrenals you know water bottle and if one organ rises up or one bunch of cells rises up and says i'm going to be selfish i'm going to take over everything i'm going to run it all it's called cancer why would it be any different society if if if if if if a small group of people or a new individual rises up and says i'm going to get it all why is that i can't let you know what i know and is talking about and she's not she's not talking about well if you have one person rising up and taking it all then obviously you can't do that unless you're trampling on other people's rights and if you're using force that you there's no way it would in the movie i did and you know the only the only workers i saw in that movie people were in and handing goblets of wine to the stars i mean it was basically you know every scene was set in and i thought well here in
9:37 pm
the screenplay end of the you know how to make the wood in the in a novel i read the novel in the novel is very few workers to i mean it's simply basically you're talking like a very blue collar yeah yeah ok novels and richard being more proud of her narrative and don't you find it ironic that the woman who's the star of the movie and of the novel inherited her money and liquidity they want to put she inherited it and the guys she ends up having the affair with is married now i realize you're iran had an open marriage and she had a whole bunch a lot right and that gets into the very deep levels of objectivism which is her whole philosophy and i don't even know i don't know if you want to go after her and quite familiar i mean a lot of people that's why mike wallace said you want to destroy christianity you want to just where are our society and she said yes we think them i think that without started coming into the context of them or looking at you know in their philosophy. and people sort of get these conceptions of honor and how she's extreme and she's you know this really sort of she really is well i mean i wouldn't say
9:38 pm
she's evil but i think she's a sociopath and she's extreme in that she has views that i think that not a whole lot of people thought i mean there are objective as i know a lot of objectivist people and i do to you know not to none of them go on that you know rants about how they want to destroy religion or christianity. almost if you're concerned i mean that it's going to be we are in a very good but they're not out looking to destroy religion are going. to try to convert other people i mean look at all the money that is poured into into the future is foundations that are promoting iran's works here we just just a minute left. lord of the flies i mean there's been around novel written lord of the flies ok there's been a real life and so i am randy experience when the biology went down pitcairn island you know. what was his name was the last it was christians and with nine other guys took over the island divided up the land and within four years the only man left alive was a guy named john adams he killed everybody they started fighting among each other
9:39 pm
all the women that they brought from taking over the food i mean is there any society in the world that you can point to where iran's ideas have ever been put into place and it didn't lead to disaster i don't think that they have ever been put into place i mean even maybe in the very. beginning stages of the united states maybe you could argue. but no i don't think we've ever i don't think i don't think they've ever been implemented and i mean isn't in an anarchist as far as i'm aware and i've read heard her her work extensively and i think that she advocates for a government a government with a very limited to enforce contracts only to enforce contracts and protect rights here to right yeah and ok and that's actually fairly in line with it with mainstream conservatism. he and i know that's the thing to hear from speech so much amanda thank you for coming in to talk about god it's conversation we probably have
9:40 pm
you have thank you very much iran's philosophy is aggressively embraced and promoted by wealthy funders of foundations that distributor ideas and books funders include koch brothers by coincidence a wall of worldview was considered by republicans during the ers of nixon eisenhower it's openly embraced today by republicans like paul ryan the guy who just wrote the budget passed by all but for republicans in the house of representatives that's the budget that cuts food stamps for poor people while cutting taxes for billionaires ryan requires that all of his congressional staffers read atlas shrugged americans meet your new rulers unless you're a billionaire in which case you may well be one of them. speaking of only caring about profits as our society becomes more and more technologically advanced one question hardly anybody asks is what happens to that old computer junk and technology want to get thrown out the e.p.a.
9:41 pm
has studied this issue and found that four point six million tons of easy ways ends up in u.s. landfills every year releasing toxic chemicals into the air and the ground. either that or they get incinerated releasing even more toxic gases into the air but there's also another place where eat waste is going the third world developing nations in asia and africa are routinely recipients of thousands of tons of old computers cell phones with. these devices can add value of all but very poisonous minerals inside of them like cadmium lead and other rare earth minerals and their routinely cannibalized and sold on grain markets around the globe often killing local populations who don't realize the danger of the stuff they're working with sixty minutes that investigation into american eat waste overseas and found poor people playing in these landfills or even working in recycling operations with
9:42 pm
nothing to protect them from being poisoned many have died so is this something we should be concerned about is there a better way of dealing with the tons of waste that we dispose of every year joining me now is the libertarian vice presidential candidate in two thousand and eight and author of numerous books his most recent the conscience of a libertarian in power in the citizens revolution with guns with god guns gambling and guts win route wayne welcome to the program. and see you but i can't hear you. wayne it's not working your audio is not turned on so i guess. well yeah ok well just it will just move along your way and perhaps we can get back to what we're going to see how it works coming up in tonight's daily take scott walker sure knows how to kick i'm going there down now he wants to do financial control over cities in wisconsin why does this sound familiar.
9:43 pm
9:44 pm
9:45 pm
into it and we know we can make you do the work to bring justice and accountability . i have every right to know what my government should do if you want to know why i pay taxes. but i would characterize the bottom line as the charismatic. of american exceptionalism. and welcome back and back with us wayne root the two thousand and eight presidential candidate for the libertarian party and the author of conscience of a libertarian empowering the citizen revolution with god guns gambling and tax cuts wayne welcome back a time to hear me out i hear you now there you go and this is not a bad cell phone commercial ok wayne is the world is the rest of the world we
9:46 pm
talked in the set up here about how many ways to all over the world and it is actually literally kill. when people particularly children and young people who have no are people who are working with it and have no idea what cadmium even is as they're trying to extract it and little bits of gold and things you know from cell phones and computers and whatnot is the rest of the world are garbage dump. well i guess my answer is that the only other alternative would be to spend billions of dollars of special recycling last night it states to say here are the same computer parts and that would cost a lot more work cost of our consumers tremendously more to buy the computers which probably will result in job losses here in america and people in those foreign countries who want those jobs will never those jobs anymore so i think would be a loss only around to try and solve this problem the way that i assumed you would as a liberal college used to spend lots of body and put new regulations on american business what i would say wayne is that if if by creating a computer or creating
9:47 pm
a cell phone you're creating a piece of alternately a piece of toxic waste that when that becomes toxic waste that's what's called an extra analogy in business you know the difference between internalized profits xstrata lies costs as an actual reality it's a cost and what these companies are doing is they're basically dumping the costs either in third world countries or on us if they just incinerated are put in a landfill and we get sick from it so i would say to these companies when you produce this product we know in advance what it's going to cost to dispose of it and by the way that would be a whole new industry that would hire lots of people you're going to pay for the extra now and if you're going to pay for the cross what's wrong with that that just seems rational to me that a company pay for the whole cost of the product not just the profitable part and dump the externalities on we the people but you know i'm always as as i am rand would say you were discussing atlas shrugged i'm
9:48 pm
a realist solomon in the real world i think rich nations quits at some point things above money and that's america we put up jobs anybody near the top we probably could see the kids getting cancer a cause that other countries who are poor put jobs in muddy to keep people from starvation above health for their citizens that's just the way the world. and so it's a pretty perfect situation where people in america build the items and then ship them overseas to people who need jobs or they would starve to death i think the people there will tell you they want the jobs they're very clear about that some day weekend you're gonna become a rich station they'll put health above those jobs and they'll build those plants that b.p. built but right now i think it's working for both sides of those people lose their jobs if there is demand for nuclear waste and people in india didn't know it was harmful would you feel comfortable selling it to block so what is your plan right now because she looks lance you've got the worst of the big stories of your cars
9:49 pm
the right amount of money they're going in there in protective suits but they're exposed themselves to tremendous amounts of radiation but their families would starve if they didn't have those jobs and so in a capitalist society you offer the highest priced i mean we're going to handle the second there though those guys are not doing i know i've worked in japan i've done business in japan for miliard japanese culture one of my very best friends is japanese lives in tokyo right now i've been corresponding daily about this for ever since three eleven a is what they refer to it those guys are not going into those situations because they got paid enough they're going to go situations there's a whole you know a whole variety of human reasons i mean some of them are actually people with with serious diseases some of them are just people with an incredible sense of obligation their country this is a country whose fighter pilots during world war two would would dive into the decks of american. carriers they're willing to die for their nation this has not the fukushima workers the daiichi workers in no case that i know of
9:50 pm
and i've seen the japanese press reports as well are doing what they're doing because of money. well your tie story to get a workout that that's a good strain for of course the reality is america it's odd you've got construction sites where i personally would not work you know i work hard i studied i got straight a's i went to club university and all the guys that are successful are out to work a construction site my kids don't have to work so now you and your kids can just dump your toxic waste on somebody who wasn't as fortunate as you who didn't who wasn't a member of the lucky sperm club and wasn't blonde white and in america some of the remember the lucky sperm club my grandfather died we're going to the hospital the other died of which are in the end in a capitalist society people take jobs according to their need and there's nothing wrong with the situation here where he out just sick those parts to a country like india best desperately poor and needs the money and needs the jobs in america it keeps the prices low it encourages others to buy new computers
9:51 pm
critically when they only use theirs for a year or two which creates even more jobs what you're suggesting would in my opinion he'll jobs in america and kill people of starvation in other countries who desperately need to work and that's how the free market works and no i'm not a liberal bleeding heart living correctness cheerleader i get it and i get it that you believe it and i think it's just the most the the oddest thing but but i but i appreciate your just being right up front about it thanks so much for for being with us when it's back it grew from a good time. the world is not. just. it's the good the bad in the very unbelievably oddly the good movie i am and me you
9:52 pm
were watching oprah yesterday you would have seen a clip of me during oprah's interview with tom shadyac the director of the film oprah played the one clip i would most would have wanted to have been on the oprah winfrey show by the way the movie's expanding and playing in more theaters but i am the movie dot com the shift has hit the fan. a bad republican congressman darrell issa yesterday on the one year anniversary of the b.p. oil spill the small time crook turned richest man in congress took to his twitter page and said this. not exactly. the miss in the quote. ok not exactly the gulf coast is still reeling from two hundred million barrels of oil washing on the shores thanks to failed government oversight of oil corporations. and as chairman of the oversight committee instead of pushing for more regulations you're doing the exact opposite as from corporations like b.p.
9:53 pm
what regulations you go after. and the very very ugly gary johnson the former governor of new mexico announced he's running for president today to kick off a campaign he's stealing some really radical stuff i guess he's just trying to fit in with the feel in an interview with think progress johnson had this insight about the nullification. of peace initiatives are getting lunch no education is good for the shit is he getting people to become more aware as a result of the notification and the rates that state students have in the ability to. i think this is really a formula that it just gets back to the constitution. that really is the formula for writing of iraq. he also went after child labor laws saying they prevent kids from gaining his words and understanding of and earning money and providing a good or service. so this guy thinks that know if occasion which trickled the
9:54 pm
triggered civil war is a great idea and laws to protect the exploitation of children is a bad idea he's obviously a bad choice for the country but a perfect choice for the republican party and that's frankly very very. governor governor scott walker the guy who threw the first pitch in this game by going after unions is stealing a page from michigan's governor rick snyder's playbook and try to pass legislation in wisconsin that would give him power to take over cities in his state but are struggling financially last week we learned that the city of benton harbor in michigan was taken over by one of governor snyder's financial managers or czars appointed by snyder to set up shop in a city fire all the elected officials break union contracts cut critical local
9:55 pm
services and sell off huge chunks of the city's infrastructure to transnational corporations on top of that another one to snyder's financial planners is closing down eight schools in detroit and selling off another forty five schools to charter companies were c.e.o.'s can make millions off exploiting the education of our kids one of those schools being closed down is the catherine ferguson academy a school specifically designed to cater to pregnant and parenting teens and their children schools feature on oprah for having a ninety percent graduation rate and a one hundred percent college acceptance after graduation rate mind bogglingly impressive numbers it's not a good enough for the republican rick snyder and wants to shut it down. hearing what snyder is doing must have made scott walker jealous because he's trying to do the same thing now in wisconsin that back in two thousand and nine he admitted he was hell bent on eliminating local governments that he didn't agree with take
9:56 pm
a look we believe if they don't they being the county board the state legislature or the governor don't give us the tools to ask for those major reforms it's probably time for us to seriously consider looking at the possibility of a limited county government and replacing it with something better that nobody replacing county with government was something better like a corporation so first walker goes after the unions at the behest of billionaires like the koch brothers and republican john k. sick in ohio and rick snyder in michigan follow suit busting up unions in their states then chris christie in new jersey starts flashing education funding to pay for enormous tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires and tax dodging corporations and sure enough walker case each snyder and rick scott in florida all proposed the same thing luckily the one thing that these republicans anticipated the one thing that made all these guys think they could get away with this grand
9:57 pm
theft of our nation is not coming true and that one thing is they thought that we the people with the help of hours and hours of misinformation from fox news they thought that we the people would just roll over and take it and that's not happening for republican senators in wisconsin are being recalled and that's just the beginning walker himself could face recall at the start of next year an effort if it is a foot in michigan to recall governor snyder and america's progressive movement hasn't been this energized in generations these radical republicans have awoken the middle class in america the true believers in a small d. democratic system. and we're not going to let the nation for which we spent centuries dying and fighting to turn into some it is a couple hundred oligarchy with the help of some crony politicians and a few billion more in their swiss bank accounts as the old g.i.
