markets try not. to know. why not what's really happening to the global economy with max cons are there are no holds barred the global financial headlines tune into kaiser report. up in the lower show we'll get the real headlines with none of the mercy or can live out of washington d.c. a new poll out from the new york times and c.b.s. might have president obama biting his nails we'll tell you how the rest of the country feels about the way our commander in chief is handling the tough issues and all determine if there's a disconnect between washington and the rest of america and we first told you yesterday about the protesters who peacefully saying for bradley manning's freedom i don't know bomb a fundraiser it's
6:01 pm
a day we'll speak with one of the women who was there to get her take on how and why this unusual approach to free speech made a difference and i will also continue our coverage of koran burning pastor terry jones as he spreads islamophobia and you're born michigan but despite his hateful message the pastor well what he says is protected under the first amendment but would this same message be applied if let's say a muslim were to speak out against christians and today is also earth day so we ask everyone to take care of the planet that we share and also look into those who work hard to protect nature all the risk of destroying their reputations we're talking eco terrorists and we want to know why these guys are given such a bad and you know we're fans of happy hours for joining us for a toast as we discuss some of the craziest stories making headlines this week like the criminal who got caught thanks to his all telling tattoos across his chest and we're saving all that fun for the end of the show but first let's move on to our top story. some days you wake up and think what is going on in this
6:02 pm
country let me give you have used this to stick from polls that came out today from the new york times and c.b.s. only fifty seven percent of adults in this country think that president obama was born in the united states if you look for republicans those numbers get even worse forty five percent of them think that he was born in another country and have a first reaction is of course to start questioning why does burger theory is gaining so much traction but it's something bigger than that also from a new york times poll americans are more pets. mistake about the nation's economic outlook and overall direction than they've been at any time since obama's first two months in office that the seven percent of americans disapprove of obama's handling of the economy and seventy five percent disapprove of the way congress is handling its job and to that the fact that seventy percent of respondents think the country is heading in the wrong direction so what is it it's going so wrong what's really behind the disapproval the anger and the resentment joining me to discuss it as
6:03 pm
david packman host of the david packman show david thanks for joining us tonight now what do you think is really going on here is this about burger ism do americans really worry that the president wasn't born in this country you know would some ruling by a court really satisfy the burgers or is there something much bigger at play well i think that nothing at this point is going to satisfy the burgers i think that race is really what's at the core of earth or a movement i mean let's be honest if barack obama's skin was lighter were people really questioning whether he was muslim whether he was born in indonesia or whether he was maybe native american i really don't think so i mean with regard to people being on a happy with the direction of the country and the economy i'm surprised the numbers are even as high as they are for people who are happy given that we have a political system that really is geared towards favoring the top ten percent of income earners in the country so i'm actually surprised it's even taken this long
6:04 pm
for approval to get this low well you're right americans are fed up with the economy right now they're not doing well they're finding out that the richest americans their wealth is quadrupling with their taxes are being cut in half they're learning that the largest corporations in this country sometimes pay no taxes but then why is it that we can't see that energy come out in a different way why does it have to come out through issues like part of the reason why aren't americans protesting again the fact that wall street has been prosecuted for bringing down the economy. well i think two things on that i think number one you're kind of making a connection between birth or ism as a those are the manifestation of anger about the economy i don't really know that i would make that leap necessarily on the other thing is media coverage and there have been a number of different protests we saw very little coverage of a lot of pro-union protests and a lot of different states and that's just because it wasn't really that interesting of a story to many corporate media outlets so i think that if we were seeing the same frenzied coverage on the other media outlets that fox news gave us of small tea
6:05 pm
party protests i think you and i and everybody else would i would better sense of how angry people are so you don't think the burger isn't can be tied to the economy at all i mean i'm definitely with you here that i think that the issue of race plays a large role you're right i mean if president obama was a white guy then nobody would be asking where he was born although of course you know prejudice always comes into play we also heard theories when president kennedy was in office that perhaps the pope was telling him what to do at all times that there has to be some other kind of anger and could it be that they feel that the president doesn't represent them as well as congress their fight up with congress to these people are looked at as these elites who just don't listen to every day americans and a lot of that is economic. it absolutely is but again thinking that the president is catering to to so-called elitists which by the way is a pretty loaded word in itself i don't think makes people question whether he has a valid birth certificate i really just don't see that direct connection now
6:06 pm
specifically with the tea party they have a number of issues they have listed over the last year that we could kind point out that they're angry with but as we see a lot of them when you actually talk details with them are really into the big issues the big claim that they are as we see with you know issues from taxes to income equality there's a lot of talk from the tea party and we really try to dig into what exactly is it going to be why it's kind of empty in a sense now you mentioned the media earlier and i want to go back to that we've seen the media spend a lot of time lately especially say the c.n.n. and s m e three is taking time to confront her there isn't taking time to go through the details to try to convince americans that obama was born in this country to try to show them the proof showed up alive certificate of birth that he has but should they be doing that are they kind of wasting time i mean how many people do you think that are out there their burgers are really watching c.n.n.
6:07 pm
and are going to be convinced by what they say almost no no i mean nobody nobody who this is who this far in is committed to been the story of obama is not eligible to be president is going to be convinced by suzanne malveaux confronting donald trump with a couple of facts set nunan c.n.n. you're absolutely right but what's scary is that when you look at the numbers from the poll how would this many people really questioning whether the president was born in the united states given that we've seen the birth certificate we've gone over this time and time again i think it is a waste of time to be dealing with this so much in mainstream media but at the same time maybe it's necessary because where are these people coming from i honestly i've never met anyone in person that actually thinks that. must exist somewhere but i think that's the whole point is that the media should maybe be asking these people should be finding these people asking them why they think that this is such an important issue instead of creating this versus them dynamic which once again
6:08 pm
you talk you and i talked about this the other day it comes to the washington and the new york and the establishment versus the rest of america so should the media wearing on a burger ask them why they feel that way. you know when this story started i think that it was more acceptable at this point the story is done george stephanopoulos showed the birth certificate to michele bachmann even she said pretty reluctantly listen this is this is settled once let's move on i think at this point it is time to move on the really should just be no more coverage of it unless anybody has any actual evidence if they want to file some kind of a court motion about where obama was born go ahead and do it but let's stop the noontime discussions with suzanne malveaux and c.n.n. about it absolutely and perhaps let's start those discussions about racism or about economic anger and why it is that americans don't like their government they want to thank you very much for joining us tonight thanks. now still to come tonight they stood up to president obama and challenge his administration over the
6:09 pm
treatment of bradley manning so tonight we'll speak with one of the women who took part in the musical protest yesterday and then pastor terry jones arrived in dearborn michigan to spread his message of hate but as much as we don't like it it is the freedom of speech to look into the good and the ugly when it comes to our first amendment rights. given that we've been apart for the length of the last. one well. we have the ability to be heard him say ready because the freedom.
6:10 pm
hey guys welcome to shower and tell me about a show we've heard our guests up to say on the topics now i want to hear an audience just go on to you tube the video response or to twitter the first part of the question that we've posted on you tube every monday and on thursday the show is gone response is currently normal. so. so. far. it's. the same. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so you think you understand it and then you glimpse something
6:11 pm
else and you hear or see some of the part of it and realize everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. yesterday we reported to you the wall president obama was out in san francisco rubbing elbows with tech giants and c.e.o.'s and trying to raise money for his reelection campaign he was greeted by a at a fundraiser by a group of activists singing a song about the unjust treatment of p.f.c. bradley manning and here's that video one more time. ok thanks.
6:12 pm
ok. ok. ok. it was a great show of civil disobedience of americans having their voices heard literally by the president but it also came with a hefty fee the fundraising event cost five thousand dollars a head which brought the total for the twenty one activists who attended to a whopping one hundred five thousand dollars and the majority of it was paid for by naomi pitcairn who spend seventy six thousand of her own money now as you saw from the video the president acknowledged the song jokingly but then didn't go any further into discussing the case of manning so for all the money that was said and simply to sing a song we have to ask was it worth it i do the activists think that it can make
6:13 pm
a difference earlier i caught up with one of those protesters it was the students and our professor at the university of california santa cruz and i have to add santa cruz is my alma mater and i'm very proud to know that some of the participants who are standing up for justice came from there i told elizabeth but i also asked her if she and the other protesters thought that the only way to get access to the president was to pay to be in his presence at five thousand dollars a head. to get an audience with obama most likely but also what happened is an opportunity arose that we simply couldn't pass up naomi pretty current who put a lot of the money up for for buying the tickets to the fundraiser she received an invitation is so we just accepted this invitation. now to pretty you think if you look at the bigger picture of our i'm so happy right there that the only existed that there was a funder here but if you look at the bigger picture what does that tell you about the state of this country when the only thing that really influences politics is
6:14 pm
money and we all know that. i mean you know i've been to many many protests on the street i've given my hundred dollar donations to many many organizations i have signed my online petitions and i really doubt that the president has ever heard any of my protests that. i will continue doing no kind of work of course you know we all will i hope to have an opportunity to be in the same room with the president of the united states nancy pelosi dianne feinstein all of the political leaders of san francisco and california and to be able to do performance art to really try to engage a discussion around human rights you know censorship or treat him of expression i mean that's just doesn't happen very often in one's lifetime so we couldn't pass it up it was just too good to be true you know and we had a funder who wanted to support us so you know this was just so times opportunities
6:15 pm
present themselves that you just cannot pass and so yes it did cost a lot of money but i think we got a big bang for our buck what do you think of the president's response i think he was trying to be nice about it but he kind of made in chelsea about how to use their forces where and they moved on he didn't even address bradley manning if you think that he really took it seriously. oh he couldn't afford to look like he was taking it seriously because you know he had an agenda he had all of these very wealthy people there waiting for him to to you know do what he's supposed to do which is basically a dog and pony show in some ways you know i'm sure he was doing four fundraisers yesterday just in california and so he's on a schedule and i think that what we did that he will always remember is we disrupted that schedule and the people in that room had never seen anything like what we did which is we say
6:16 pm
a son very lovingly there was no push back towards the president at all it was turned into a very chilled shield manner and you know it's really a beautiful form of of civil disobedience or civil discourse as you well it was a peaceful protest there i was trying to solicit because here we have a president who promised transparency he promised to close guantanamo bay he hasn't done either of those things quite the opposite is now the war whistleblowers right he is now only expanded some of the wars that we have right now has put american citizens on assassination less despite all those broken promises are you still going to vote for him the second time around are you still ok with this money that it cost in order to get into this fund raising event to go towards his reelection. well that's a complicated question i mean i think capitalism is a very corrupt system at this point and i think. the towers that we are
6:17 pm
are there's so much money flying around out there that i'm sure i can't even imagine you know and so. i don't know if i'm going to vote for him or not. i need to see who the alternatives are i mean only you know i have i mean i wish me only prettier and would run for president frankly you know bitch so don't think she's going to go. i hope some of the right wing people who are throwing their hats into the ring to run for president or become president and this is very much a sort of navigation of what the best it's her with the best field of play is going to be in the future you know i really don't know i'm very disappointed in obama's first term i think he has not kept a lot of his promises. i need a better alternative and i think we all need a better alternative and so i don't exactly know how to answer your question i
6:18 pm
think the. only was giving out money to his campaign and she was using the opportunity of giving that money to use campaign to make you listen to something he would not ordinarily hear and not just him but all of the people in. all this that i think that there are a lot of people out there like you that way that we wish that there was another alternative i fortunately doesn't really seem to be panning out that way that are and i think there will be a lot of people probably a vote for obama's re-election is just fear of who the other guy might be right who might win on the republican side but we do need some different alternative i thank you very much for joining us. thank you thank you so much for having us on the show you know you know yeah. the last forty eight hours the libyan rebels have gotten two gifts from the american people drones and a high profile visit from a u.s. senator that's right arizona senator john mccain a rival today for meetings with rebel leaders and take
6:19 pm
a listen to became speaking with reporters in benghazi arizona senator john mccain is in libya to meet with rebel forces. the senator arrived in the rebel stronghold of benghazi friday came here to give. a shit situation if your meeting with the council meeting with the military meeting with lots of people and you. senator mccain one of the libyan war's biggest cheerleaders really pulled out all the stops for this visit even it declaring the rebels his heroes i guess those shiny new drones were enough for mccain because he also went on to call for nato to step up its air campaign over libya and he says the u.s. and other allies should provide the rebels with training weapons and command and control activities right because of what could go wrong with that right who cares that we still don't really know who the rebels are who cares that we've done that numerous times before like you have got a stand and then that really didn't work out all that well now senator mccain has
6:20 pm
positioned himself as one of the leading of voices on intervention here in washington calling for the u.s. and nato to launch military strikes in libya mccain says the moammar gadhafi the long time leader there must go but oh how times have changed back in august of two thousand and nine john mccain along with other war hawks in the senate lindsey graham and joe lieberman they all made a trip to tripoli to visit gadhafi they discussed the possibility of the american military sending equipment to put off mccain said in a news conference of the time the ties between the united states and libya have taken a remarkable and positive turn in recent years. so i guess those relations between the u.s. and libya have now taken a remarkable turn against senator mccain so for this time get off he no longer provides you with a political purpose now coincidentally as we told you earlier mccain's visit comes just one day after president obama signed off on using armed predator drones in libya against gadhafi forces but obama's approval gives the military the power to
6:21 pm
use two on manned aircraft around the clock in urban areas to libya the u.s. military trying to launch them on thursday but weather issues force them back it's just another slap in the face for obama to his anti-war base something that i personally have come to expect these states so when john mccain having photo ops with rebels just two years after a photo op with cut off he and president obama authorizing the use of drones this is becoming more of a politically disturbing war with each passing day. yesterday we told you that pastor terry jones the man who approved and presided over the burning of a koran was taking his message to her born michigan as the local muslim community awaits jones's arrival many are contemplating another issue aside from his lot of phobia that a free speech party's christine for as our reports from dearborn. they came to show that the planned protest was not causing a rift in their community even formed
6:22 pm
a human chain in a show of solidarity christians jews and muslims were not afraid. but we can work together as a team as if it is one family they came to send pastor terry jones a message whatever has him tormented i want to pray and as god to deliver him or not this is to him he is i am praying for you he needs help more than seven hundred people attended a service on the eve of the protest planned by a man that has held the qur'an on trial and another man who actually set the holy book on fire to fight what some here deemed the greatest offense with peace. peace. but were some in the city of your board are divided along the lines of two rules of law the constitution and the qur'an and truly with that freedom of speech but i think it should be a little bit more it stuck with people they get to create problem he has every
6:23 pm
right to say what he wants to do what he wants this is america this is not the middle east but at least he should not hurt our feelings for some across the country the question is will freedom of speech incite violence. earlier this month in response to pastor terry jones actions more than a dozen people were killed in mazar e sharif in afghanistan here in dearborn it is about public safety pastor jones was refused a permit to. protest at the mosque but was told he could protest elsewhere he should not be stopped from expressing his opinion in other venues that he's been offered including in the city hall under local laws here there are for designated free speech the henry ford community center the public library city hall and right here in one thousand fistric court but the bigger question for many is should there be designated free speech zones or under the first amendment of the constitution
6:24 pm
should the entire country be a designated free speech zone in there warren michigan christine for sound party. let's face it pastor terry jones is crazy and you know what's great about that is that i can say that i think he's crazy and i don't like him because it's my right continue so because that's what free speech is i was the exact same thing that allows him to organize events that are offensive and intolerance and matter what the consequences and it's free speech applied equally in this country or as our government they can choose when to uphold part of the constitution joining me to discuss it is williams blogger thanks so much for being here tonight thank you for having me i will first start as i mean are you a free speech believer do you think the pastor terry jones has the right to be burning korans the feels like it protesting in front of mosques if he feels like it writing books called islam is of the devil i mean i would have to say yes i'm a free speech advocate because i know that usually the first victim of free speech
6:25 pm
infringements are the people who use power and in this country you know it is really muslims arab americans so if we start saying it's ok to start taking away rights for same things that people find offensive we're going to be the first in line for losing those rights and in fact we have been since september eleventh especially with a lot of the legal changes that took place with the war on terror for example just it was really course coming close to crossing the line in terms of taking away the rights of arab americans or muslims to freely state what they think about the world i mean there were times when we would be accused of supporting terrorism and they get investigated for making free speech kind of statements so it gives already happening he's already got me has already since nine eleven been treating people on equally when it comes to free speech i mean i'm just curious what do you think of the reaction would be in this country right now obviously there are a lot of people who don't like terry jones and what he's doing that are up in arms but do you think of the reaction would be bigger or just different if let's say it
6:26 pm
was a muslim man that wanted to burn copies of the bible on september. i don't i think there would be a different public reaction of most sure about an actual legal reaction like the kind of point i was trying to make was that after september eleventh they started there were a lot of government infringements on civil liberties in the really logic was that it's ok to give away civil liberties because it's important for security for national security but the civil liberties they were giving away were really mostly the civil liberties of arab americans and muslims well now that muslims are becoming under threat as a as a community by this kind of discourse by this kind of rhetoric there's no longer that well let's you know throw away the kind of the constitution and in order to protect the community i mean i think the city of dear one is trying to do that but i still don't support that because i know it's a slippery slope and if we say it's ok to do it for terry jones it's going to be ok to do it against your guy when they were trying to to find him ahead of time for
6:27 pm
disturbing the peace yeah right you know you have to have to ask do we even really have freedom of speech the way that we used to or the way that was intended to be great you know what was written in the constitution in this country i think that nine eleven was a good example but it's also we have you know lindsey graham recently the senator who is a big war hog said i believe in free speech but we're in a war and this excuse has been used so many so many times that america is always at war these days so when is our free speech not going to be in some way limited we also have to have designated free speech areas you're going to permit is a protester is someone who's been protesting for many years a lot of the restrictions that terry jones is coming against are the same kind of restrictions that we faced and so now i think it's ok to hate his message but it's more important to fight for his right to say it i wish that he would have that same kind of respect the religion he would never tolerate people saying the kind of things that he's saying towards muslims to actually see them against christians to stop the christianisation of america he would never support that so he had the
6:28 pm
dearborn community i think is making a really good statement in saying that we're in a protest peacefully. it's our freedom of speech and it's your freedom of speech the protests i'm talking about the arab americans or people on the street they reject his message of hate but ultimately i think that they're standing up for his right to say it and that's a privilege that i think he should be returning and so does that mean you know if they're even arab americans out there in michigan in dearborn in that community that are respecting his rights because i mean if they've made a choice because i think that this is the question that a lot of people often will bring out is they'll say well if you're muslim or your holy book is the koran then you must follow the laws of the karada right or is it the constitution do you have to really make a choice between the two or or is it easing choice going i was in the present america i think it's very easy for muslims to live in america florida be a muslim in france right now you know where the understanding of cycler islam is anti religion whereas in the united states has a rich history of all different kinds of religious communities and you know there's been many periods of kind of hate and phobias towards whether it's the catholics or
6:29 pm
mormons or the jews for example i think muslims in this time in history are the sort of latest kicking boy you know the shame it's only theory jones is trying to profit from it trying to gain attention from it and people in dearborn recognize look here's a demagogue who's just trying to gain opportunities by hitting on the easy to the community and they reject it out of hand well hopefully you know yeah it's a it's a slippery slope you're right and i think that terry jones definitely has the right to do this but hopefully nothing negative results out of that we saw eight u.n. workers killed in afghanistan you know in a protest that was you could say spurred by their knowledge of the fact that he did burn the koran and we would never see anything like that happen here well thanks so much and thank you. now still to come tonight a senator says that fracking has never polluted the water here in the u.s. for the wrong it's real time to say thanks and if you're thinking of the careful if you're trying to protect mother earth educate others because you could be labeled an eco terrorist or discuss that and more in just about.
