welcome back to the big picture i'm starvin coming up in this half hour was the death of osama bin laden a result of war tonight a daily take on why war is not the answer and why bush and a lot lot of the same feel strategy plus there's a new rumor that's brewing in the bin laden mission was a fake that's like the president's birth certificate so what's it going to take to shut these death who says. it's not only the oil corporations that are rolling in dough after the first quarter of this year it's also the for profit health insurance corporations that health care for example announced it made nearly two billion dollars in profits so far this year which prompted investors and throw boatloads of cash and other help.
9:32 pm
insurance corporations like at cigna and humana expecting that they also they too will post big profits and health care c.e.o. stephen j. hemsley who happens to be the highest paid c.e.o. in the nation making over one hundred million dollars last year is said to be sitting pretty on a stock portfolio of well over a billion dollars so how is all this money flowing into the health insurance companies coffers is what we all expect if they're using our premium dollars to pay for new yachts instead of paying for medical care we need here offer some answers as someone who knows the business of for profit health insurance very well wendell potter a former vice president of corporate communications for cigna turned health care industry whistleblower and currently the senior fellow on health care for the center for media and democracy he's also the author of the book deadly spin an insurance company insider speaks out on how corporate p.r. is killing health care and deceiving americans when the welcome to the program that it's on why is united health care rolling in dough we're to how can how can one guy
9:33 pm
stephen helmsley walk off with a billion dollars house has he been possible america will talk about life and death issue yeah in fact by the time it's all good then he retires that stash of stock up will be much much greater than that is because these companies take a lot of what we pay them in for our premiums and skim it off for other purposes as more and more and more every year that's happening and that's why congress by the way had a provision in the health care reform law to at least pardon the spin at least eighty cents of every dollar that we pay them premiums our medical care you know how many cents of every dollar the medicare spends on health care or the veterans administration spends on health care how many cents of every dollar there are is actually going to health care by comparison just three cents three three three three three cents or an estrangement i do so in the sense that you don't care so we're requiring in the form. private health insurance companies to spend eighty
9:34 pm
cents on the dollar for health care and yet when we do it ourselves it's ninety seven cents on the dollar and we can do it with a three percent overhead if that's what you get with government run health care you can get your premiums that are being spent for health care but the fees these executives make a lot of money because they're rewarded by their boards of directors and wall street and their much of their income is actually what they call at risk the more they satisfy wall street the more money they make and that's why him julie is doing so well his company has really been a darling of wall street now for some time. dollar bill of wire was cicero assessor exactly and i remember when the wall street journal broke the story on their front page this was about five years ago as i recall reading it was shot was part of a three part series on health care that this c.e.o. of united healthcare had made one point seven billion dollars over ten year period
9:35 pm
nobody knew that and. it appeared that he was back again some of his stock options the was engaged in fraud and ended up paying a couple hundred dollars a couple hundred million dollars of it back backers of six hundred billion hit six hundred million and never went to jail no i suspect if he'd robbed a seven eleven for sixty bucks or hospital if he did you know shoplift a syringe from a hospital he'd be in jail so. didn't put company learning lessons from being outed that you know that their c.e.o. was taking over a billion dollars and was a crook clearly decided to keep rewarding their their c.e.o. with the stock options and it's kind of ironic that emslie is getting as rich as he is on these stock options you're right it was determined that his predecessor did back they froze stock options to get maximum value for them. but again these companies are in business to make money here really like banks basically i mean and
9:36 pm
so being called insurance companies because you know the with insurance you've got actuarial pools you've got long term investments these companies are recycling dollars year for year month for month even as they really more like banks yes and they've been becoming more like banks every year on the list and in fact one of the big companies decided to change its charter to become a financial services company which it which it is and this these companies will be hard pressed to find the websites the word insurance or even the tremendous care they bear in the business for the health services business or something like that but they they they move far away from the idea when you were here when you were messaging for cigna. and ultimately reach the point where you could reconcile that with being a human being if i if i may put words in your mouth. what were the practices of the health insurance companies and what are to this day that most stick in your craw
9:37 pm
that most concern you both morally and just practically well they turn people away who need health insurance for one thing they also have had a practice for many years of dumping the sick when people do get sick. claims that are getting pretty high and the insurance companies have had a practice of going back to look at the applications looking for some excuse to cancel their coverage and they've been sued it's called rescission they've been jacking up the premiums a small business is whenever an employer to an employee gets sick for many years which is a and then when the business policy comes up for renewal they will often jack their rates up so high that there's no choice but for the small business to drop coverage that's why fifty one million of us in this country don't have coverage now it's it's because of the practices of these insurance companies to be able to reward the stephen him for this in the world how do we stop this break this we have a little love is not well for the regulation but you know i think the health care
9:38 pm
reform law that was passed can require these companies to behave differently and it will do that but the worry is that they'll be working with their lobbyists on capitol hill to try to get those we speak to try to get some of the provisions that that should be in the law changed they want to they want to strip out some of the similar protections the new regulations are remarkable wendell potter keep up the great work thanks for its spreading the good work thank you thank you so much for dropping by but my pleasure just like the oil companies the health insurance companies profit and all the rest of us suffer and stop patriotic it's parasitic. the death as are spreading you know all those people who think that osama bin laden's take down mission was actually fake him and bin laden was actually he's or is actually still alive or was dead a long time ago and frozen at least they'll think that way until they see the long form body even then i'm sure they'll find some other theory conspiracy theory to
9:39 pm
hang on to for a one stop shop for all your death or needs log out of world net daily take a look at some of the headlines on the website today i was on a d.n.a. analyzed within twenty four hour service. the d.n.a. evidence must be a lie not everyone believes. and speaks for itself burial at sea upsets relatives of nine eleven victims as in what president obama really did was anger nine eleven victims not to kill bin rot and then there was world net daily poll in which visitors rastus sound off on the death of osama bin laden was part of the response to the poll garnering twenty percent of the vote was a tiny no no bomb as order was perfect to distract from his eligibility troubles a perfect response since it combines death the resentment. and the fourth bush response with seven percent of the vote was i'm skeptical bin laden is actually dead figures there was radio host alex jones his take on bin laden's death
9:40 pm
yesterday on this network. who sharma been lauded according to two white house sources and i'm on record with this and another state department source we have one of the names is public in two thousand and two saying he died he's frozen literally frozen and that he would be rolled out in the future if some day demanded all right alex join alex joins me now to talk more about this pressing issue he's a filmmaker author and investigative journalist and the host of the alex jones radio show alex welcome. ok it's great to be here i'd like to just make two central points here number one the cia last may twenty fifth in spy talk in the washington post two unnamed how of the cia sources told the paper they did make fake bin laden videos those were fake of the famous ones weren't even good computer renditions a linguist and others a list of the voice and that even if it passes me what god has frozen that that
9:41 pm
means that you know bush was running a p.r. campaign trying to scare the hell out of us well expanding on that the point is that they do make fake videos they're going to be releasing those fake photos probably tomorrow so there is a history and you guys make it all partisan it was madeleine albright on fox news and c.n.n. in two thousand and three that said the word was he was frozen and was going to be rolled out that's part of the record i was walter cronkite it was teresa heinz kerry that came out of the word was bush was planning to do that but because they put that out he backed off ok so why ask why you awards is that are you suggesting alex that that's the reason that that out i mean this is just just the idea that the bush administration had bin laden's body all these years frozen and any time like three weeks before the election to help john mccain make it a role they're playing out in such a way this we just got it but now they're letting obama take credit for i don't get
9:42 pm
it. well dr steve put chanakya served under baker kissinger and others as the deputy secretary of state in those departments came on my show first in two thousand and two in april and said this and then i did talk to a large house source high level well known here in austin texas and then through another trusted media source who talked to another person in the white house that that is the case and we've seen all the dirty dog lad leave that a lot of people told you this or told you that they knew somebody told you this i'm i'm just wondering why why would you know if they knew. it only is your question what they needed to keep to keep the myth of bin laden alive. you know for the next seven eight nine years if they had admitted that he was dead then they would be able to teach school kids to be afraid of him that he was under the table so the t.s.a. has to stick their hands down again like all right you know tom of the credit for this why not ok we have gone around oh why didn't credit because this is i'm not
9:43 pm
partisan with this for the tea party doesn't believe it or didn't believe it world net daily and i know i just think you are x. their issue my issue is i'm on record nine years ago with this information i'm nonpartizan it is the presidential level they may fight over who gets to be president but on the trillions on the wars on the torture on the secret arrest the democrats toe the line just like the republicans just like they have the same secretary of defense that bush era over gates so this is the same deal and this is to signal a new era in war and all of this to me who was sandy a friend pakistan and ukraine pakistan i'm wondering where glenn beck fits into this you've you've said that he's a government operative and i'm wondering what agency he wished for. well he works for basically the right wing foundations that that cover the right wing of the control paradigm to keep folks on the reservation fighting with each other and
9:44 pm
then there's the george soros ford foundation arm that basically created the cia the ford foundation and others are on record working is a guy who does not owe us and afterwards we guess yes and the one hundred forty seven national security i mean look our service is the same government. this is the same government that gave us fake w m d documents and told us that hydrogen blimp pumps were were the anthrax systems. alysha never going to you're going to never going to get me to disagree with his missile the immigrants that monica lewinsky callouses of her people alex i'm agreeing this is wag the dog. and i'm telling you yes i know our government has lied to us the gulf of tonkin and it was only thing that laureus in my lifetime frankly but i'm just wondering why the nine eleven truth there is would love lend back if he were actually works for a government agency and and nine eleven truth is love glenn beck ok they they don't all right great i inaccurately your thoughts on william edwards' hickman's becoming
9:45 pm
the role model for a book on it isn't so you're trying to create a partisan wedge to keep people in the partisan left right paradigm here glenn beck isn't as well as we should remember the spirit the day after nine eleven same thing obama said sunday night these guys are basically pushing the same paradigm they have faith controlled opposition to make obama look like he's on the left while he passes an insurance plan written by the insurance companies as such socialist health care while he continues the war glenn beck gives him left cover by attacking and claiming is on the left and i'm way past his junior high i just had i got the william edward hickman a serial murderer a nine hundred twenty seven cut up a little girl all throughout her body. you know in the car when her father finally came to pay the pay the the ransom as as i'm sure you know he was the role model that i and rand used for her hero in the fountainhead in another one of her
9:46 pm
novels and basically was her idea to superman somebody who is incapable of feeling the pain of others and we're seen this now in the ryan budget plan i'm assuming right across the board and activism and libertarianism out of chicago school i'm not at all that i'm not in this i'm not. i'm not asking if you're into it i'm i'm asking your thoughts on objectivism and libertarianism coming out of a sociopathic mass murderer well if you want to label but you can put labels i mean you can say stalin was a leftist and killed thirty million people or where was i talking about iran here. iran is closed you know what is no longer working she was in love with this guy is a total diversion out of the fact that we can't believe anything the government tells us they threw the body into the sea you've got black ops long history i mean private private lynch that turned out to be broken or produced the whole thing she hid under the truck then when the rest of her team said that they had had it had
9:47 pm
killed the iraq as i said alex i know there's only sometimes our government is lying to us i'm not disagreeing with you about that and try to get answers to some of these other things you say are bankers are controlled by the british royal family and who are eugenicists we have half of them are it's your dish that you're given x. it was the it was the king of england the time it advocate was a big hitler supporter they had eugenics fairs all over the us that some of our modern health departments should be racial hygiene thirty five states forcibly sterilized hundreds and hundreds of thousands of women and this is this is our modern banking. no money no still full of world banking your job now is in reality i'm sorry we're out of time. and i wish them the medium gave us a longer time aren't. to say your job goodbye alex it's good to have you and good to see you. ok back in two thousand and eight we called the birth of his craziness
9:48 pm
and they would just eventually go away but they did and three years later the present united states was having to show everyone his birth certificate even that hasn't satisfied so maybe we should think twice before we dismiss the doctors they could be around for a long long time. after the break tonight civilians say why we need wasn't bush and bin ladin and what gandhi and him.
9:49 pm
you know sometimes you see a story and see so. you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else here sees some other part of it and realized everything you thought you knew you don't. tar is a big picture. it's the good the bad of the very agonizingly ugly person the good talker of the morning to a recent study out of hamilton college to look at twenty six television. and graded them on how accurate their predictions were paul krugman turned out to be the top truth teller it should be noted the greek roman also thinks we should opt for progressive budget in the progressive caucus in the house of representatives that includes tax hikes on millionaires and now there are scientific numbers to support
9:50 pm
who wins insight and a nobel prize in economics too maybe we should all listen to him a lot more off the bat but donald in an interview with the new york times trying to talk about why he doesn't support same sex marriage and as usual trying to put forward an intelligent and well thought out argument saying. why didn't golf a lot of people are switching to these really long potters very unattractive it's weird and i'm a traditionalist and i have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay but i am a traditionalist. keep your golf metaphors for yourself better yet try spending more time on the golf course and less time pretending to run for president and the very very ugly republican congressman peter king the same guy who is investigating american muslim communities is becoming the chief advocate for torture and appeared on fox news last night and then again this morning to say this. we have trained information several years ago right live from
9:51 pm
a show about the courier. obama we have to take that information through waterboarding and some of those you say that waterboarding there's a word you say that it should be stopped and if you use again we got vital information would go directly where it's true but not while actually you know or the fox but actually that's a lie chairman of the senate intelligence committee dianne feinstein has confirmed that is not true even donald rumsfeld said it wasn't for the let me guess this was another republicans this statement is not intended to be factually correct the thing right. that's very very. if there's one thing that we can take away from the death of osama bin laden it's the war doesn't work bin laden wasn't killed because we had one hundred thousand
9:52 pm
troops on the ground in afghanistan he was killed thanks to suppress intelligence gathering intelligence by the way that was not gathered through the use of torture says donald rumsfeld who explicitly said the useful intel did not come from torture and he was killed thanks to an elite force of navy seals two dozen number who were able to act swiftly swiftly on the intelligence and move in with a surgical operation with no collateral damage and with no one even knowing it happened until after they were done president obama didn't need a bullhorn on a pile of rubble or to make a dramatic landing on an aircraft carrier he didn't have a bomb a country back to the stone age and then throw one hundred thousand troops into pakistan last sunday to get bin laden he only needed two dozen well trained men. tragically similarly bush didn't need to carpet bomb kabul and launch a full scale invasion to get bin laden ten years ago in fact bin laden could have
9:53 pm
been taken out nine years ago had bush just listened to his advisors who said that we have bin ladin cornered in the mountains of tora bora and a thousand marines could finish him off for good unfortunately bush said no to the marines he needed them for oil rich iraq heck bin laden could have been nabbed days after nine eleven had bush taken up model omar's offer to let afghanistan arrest bin laden and hand him over to a third country for a trial but instead of a surgical mission and instead of working with the afghans bush diverted those marines to iraq to launch another full scale war and told mullah omar where he could stick his offer bush wanted to go it alone. after ten years and trillions of dollars of go it alone we've learned one thing about this war strategy it only creates more war and more violence bush and bin ladin belong to the same school of thought they both believe the only way to win whether it be
9:54 pm
territory or hearts and minds is through extreme violence and war to kill a lot or kill enough of them that the rest surrender and ten years ago they both put in place this essentially the same strategy really littered the middle east with both overt and covert wars and bin laden countered everywhere we went with even more extreme violence and war al-qaeda for example wasn't even in a wrap until we got up there and in the end but to both sides have to show where we are now no closer to stamping out religious extremism after ten years the taliban is on the rise in afghanistan again and now bin laden is dead and al qaeda is becoming less and less significant in arab world but because muslims are seen how toxic bin laden's thinking it was not because of bush's workers. there are hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians dead five million more displaced just in iraq as
9:55 pm
a result of bush's and bin laden's wars war kills people it does not solve problems unlike bush and bin laden martin luther king in the heart and ghandi knew war wasn't good for anything they both had visions they wanted to create a new world just like bin laden just like bush but instead of arming themselves instead of planting bombs in cars and flying planes into buildings and lobbing cruise missiles into civilian neighborhoods hama gandhi and martin luther king jr just sat there literally they just sat there they relied on their message and the righteousness of their cause and they sat there and they marched and they demonstrated and they didn't move and before long but masses bought in not because they were forced to at the end of a gun barrel but because right prevailed over right because gandhi and king used nonviolence because they use nonviolence they were successful were others like
9:56 pm
bush and bin laden and failed and we see the same dynamic playing out all across the middle east and north africa in egypt in tunisia we saw the two strategies collide peaceful protests clashing with violent government put downs and in both egypt and tunisia nonviolence on the day and both those nations there were two voices conspicuously absent bin laden's bushes no one wanted any part of their violent messages why because the people are finally catching on that it doesn't work the arab revolts we are witnessing or taking down despots like mubarak and at the same time silencing religious extremists like than love. both bush and bin ladin thought they could win the future with war instead they lost the last decade and bin laden has no future and because of bush's wars the future for the united states is looking bleaker than it has in over
9:57 pm
a century if we really want to win the future as president obama has said he intends to do then we need to stop the wars and once again become a nation of builds up both itself and others that advocates privacy of life and nonviolence and values education and human rights more than it does death and work. the biggest lesson out of the middle east is that the violent guy both lost and is pretty universally hated and the nonviolent people in egypt and tunisia are showing the way through their successes that others from hamas to the united states should stop. and that's the picture for tonight for more information on the stories we covered visit our web site at thom hartmann dot com and archie dot com also check out our youtube page eater dot com slash big picture artsy and slash tom hardy this entire show is available as a free podcast on i tunes and don't forget democracy begins when you show up when
