insurance corporations like at cigna and humana expecting that they also they too will post big profits and health care c.e.o. stephen j. hemsley who happens to be the highest paid c.e.o. in the nation making over one hundred million dollars last year is said to be sitting pretty on a stock portfolio of well over a billion dollars so how is all this money flowing into the health insurance companies coffers is what we all expect if they're using our premium dollars to pay for new yachts instead of paying for medical care we need here offer some answers as someone who knows the business of for profit health insurance very well wendell potter a former vice president of corporate communications for cigna turned health care industry whistleblower and currently the senior fellow on health care for the center for media and democracy he's also the author of the book deadly spin an insurance company insider speaks out on how corporate p.r. is killing health care and deceiving americans when the welcome to the program that it's on why is united health care rolling in dough we're to how can how can one guy

cents on the dollar for health care and yet when we do it ourselves it's ninety seven cents on the dollar and we can do it with a three percent overhead if that's what you get with government run health care you can get your premiums that are being spent for health care but the fees these executives make a lot of money because they're rewarded by their boards of directors and wall street and their much of their income is actually what they call at risk the more they satisfy wall street the more money they make and that's why him julie is doing so well his company has really been a darling of wall street now for some time. dollar bill of wire was cicero assessor exactly and i remember when the wall street journal broke the story on their front page this was about five years ago as i recall reading it was shot was part of a three part series on health care that this c.e.o. of united healthcare had made one point seven billion dollars over ten year period

nobody knew that and. it appeared that he was back again some of his stock options the was engaged in fraud and ended up paying a couple hundred dollars a couple hundred million dollars of it back backers of six hundred billion hit six hundred million and never went to jail no i suspect if he'd robbed a seven eleven for sixty bucks or hospital if he did you know shoplift a syringe from a hospital he'd be in jail so. didn't put company learning lessons from being outed that you know that their c.e.o. was taking over a billion dollars and was a crook clearly decided to keep rewarding their their c.e.o. with the stock options and it's kind of ironic that emslie is getting as rich as he is on these stock options you're right it was determined that his predecessor did back they froze stock options to get maximum value for them. but again these companies are in business to make money here really like banks basically i mean and

so being called insurance companies because you know the with insurance you've got actuarial pools you've got long term investments these companies are recycling dollars year for year month for month even as they really more like banks yes and they've been becoming more like banks every year on the list and in fact one of the big companies decided to change its charter to become a financial services company which it which it is and this these companies will be hard pressed to find the websites the word insurance or even the tremendous care they bear in the business for the health services business or something like that but they they they move far away from the idea when you were here when you were messaging for cigna. and ultimately reach the point where you could reconcile that with being a human being if i if i may put words in your mouth. what were the practices of the health insurance companies and what are to this day that most stick in your craw

that most concern you both morally and just practically well they turn people away who need health insurance for one thing they also have had a practice for many years of dumping the sick when people do get sick. claims that are getting pretty high and the insurance companies have had a practice of going back to look at the applications looking for some excuse to cancel their coverage and they've been sued it's called rescission they've been jacking up the premiums a small business is whenever an employer to an employee gets sick for many years which is a and then when the business policy comes up for renewal they will often jack their rates up so high that there's no choice but for the small business to drop coverage that's why fifty one million of us in this country don't have coverage now it's it's because of the practices of these insurance companies to be able to reward the stephen him for this in the world how do we stop this break this we have a little love is not well for the regulation but you know i think the health care

troops on the ground in afghanistan he was killed thanks to suppress intelligence gathering intelligence by the way that was not gathered through the use of torture says donald rumsfeld who explicitly said the useful intel did not come from torture and he was killed thanks to an elite force of navy seals two dozen number who were able to act swiftly swiftly on the intelligence and move in with a surgical operation with no collateral damage and with no one even knowing it happened until after they were done president obama didn't need a bullhorn on a pile of rubble or to make a dramatic landing on an aircraft carrier he didn't have a bomb a country back to the stone age and then throw one hundred thousand troops into pakistan last sunday to get bin laden he only needed two dozen well trained men. tragically similarly bush didn't need to carpet bomb kabul and launch a full scale invasion to get bin laden ten years ago in fact bin laden could have

been taken out nine years ago had bush just listened to his advisors who said that we have bin ladin cornered in the mountains of tora bora and a thousand marines could finish him off for good unfortunately bush said no to the marines he needed them for oil rich iraq heck bin laden could have been nabbed days after nine eleven had bush taken up model omar's offer to let afghanistan arrest bin laden and hand him over to a third country for a trial but instead of a surgical mission and instead of working with the afghans bush diverted those marines to iraq to launch another full scale war and told mullah omar where he could stick his offer bush wanted to go it alone. after ten years and trillions of dollars of go it alone we've learned one thing about this war strategy it only creates more war and more violence bush and bin ladin belong to the same school of thought they both believe the only way to win whether it be

territory or hearts and minds is through extreme violence and war to kill a lot or kill enough of them that the rest surrender and ten years ago they both put in place this essentially the same strategy really littered the middle east with both overt and covert wars and bin laden countered everywhere we went with even more extreme violence and war al-qaeda for example wasn't even in a wrap until we got up there and in the end but to both sides have to show where we are now no closer to stamping out religious extremism after ten years the taliban is on the rise in afghanistan again and now bin laden is dead and al qaeda is becoming less and less significant in arab world but because muslims are seen how toxic bin laden's thinking it was not because of bush's workers. there are hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians dead five million more displaced just in iraq as

a result of bush's and bin laden's wars war kills people it does not solve problems unlike bush and bin laden martin luther king in the heart and ghandi knew war wasn't good for anything they both had visions they wanted to create a new world just like bin laden just like bush but instead of arming themselves instead of planting bombs in cars and flying planes into buildings and lobbing cruise missiles into civilian neighborhoods hama gandhi and martin luther king jr just sat there literally they just sat there they relied on their message and the righteousness of their cause and they sat there and they marched and they demonstrated and they didn't move and before long but masses bought in not because they were forced to at the end of a gun barrel but because right prevailed over right because gandhi and king used nonviolence because they use nonviolence they were successful were others like

bush and bin laden and failed and we see the same dynamic playing out all across the middle east and north africa in egypt in tunisia we saw the two strategies collide peaceful protests clashing with violent government put downs and in both egypt and tunisia nonviolence on the day and both those nations there were two voices conspicuously absent bin laden's bushes no one wanted any part of their violent messages why because the people are finally catching on that it doesn't work the arab revolts we are witnessing or taking down despots like mubarak and at the same time silencing religious extremists like than love. both bush and bin ladin thought they could win the future with war instead they lost the last decade and bin laden has no future and because of bush's wars the future for the united states is looking bleaker than it has in over
