thought about the big picture i'm tom hartman coming up in this half hour was the death of osama bin laden a result of war tonight a daily take on why war is not the answer and why bush and a lot of the same field strategy plus there's a new rumor that's brewing in the bin laden mission was a fake and i just like the president's birth certificate so what's going to take to shut these deaths it's awful. it's not only the oil corporations that are rolling in dough after the first quarter of this year it's also the for profit health insurance corporations yet health care for example when i was there made nearly two billion dollars in profit so far this year which prompted investors to throw boatloads of cash and other health insurance. corporations like aetna cigna and humana expecting that they also
11:32 pm
they too will post big profits and health care c.e.o. stephen j. hensley who happens to be the highest paid c.e.o. in the nation making over one hundred million dollars last year is said to be sitting pretty on a stock portfolio of well over a billion dollars so how is all this money flowing into the health insurance companies coffers is what we all expect but they're using our premium dollars to pay for new yachts instead of paying for medical care and we need your offer some answers as someone who knows the business of for profit health insurance very well wendell potter a former vice president of corporate communications for cigna turned health care industry whistleblower and currently the senior fellow on health care for the center for media and democracy he's also the author of the book deadly spin and insurance company insider speaks out about how corporate p.r. is killing health care and deceiving americans run but welcome to the program. why is united health care rolling in dough worded this is how can how can one guy
11:33 pm
stephen hemsley walk off with a billion dollars how is this even possible in america we'll talk about not life and death issue yeah in fact by the time it's all over time he retires and that stash of stuff about from the much much greater than that is because these companies take a lot of what we we pay them in for our premiums and skim it off for other purposes and that's more and more and more every year that's happening and that's why congress by the way had a provision in the health care reform law to at least require the spin at least eighty cents of every dollar that we pay them premiums our medical care you know how many cents of every dollar the medicare spends on health care or the veterans administration spends on health care how many cents of every dollar there is actually going to health care by comparison just three cents three three three three three cents or an estrangement you saw in that insistence that you don't care so we're requiring the for private hell. insurance companies spend eighty cents on
11:34 pm
the dollar for health care and yet when we do it ourselves it's ninety seven cents on the dollar that and we can do it with a three percent overhead if that's what you get with government run health care you can get your premiums that are being spent for health care but but these these executives make a lot of money because they're rewarded by their boards of directors and wall street and their much of their their income is actually what they call at risk the more they satisfy wall street the more money to meg and that's why him slowly is doing so well his company has really been a darling of wall street now for some time. dollar bill of water was this right assessor exactly and i remember when the wall street journal broke the story on their front page this was about five years ago as i recall reading it was shock was part of a three part series on health care that the c.e.o. of united healthcare had made one point seven billion dollars over ten year period
11:35 pm
nobody knew that and. it appeared that he was back again some of his stock options the was engaged in fraud me ended up paying a couple hundred dollars a couple hundred million dollars of it back to their backers six hundred million people six hundred million never went to jail though no i suspect if you robbed a seven eleven for sixty bucks or a hospital if you do you know shoplift that a syringe from a hospital he'd be in jail yeah so. didn't the company learning lessons from being outed that you know that their c.e.o. was taking over a billion dollars and was a crook were clearly decided to keep we were doing there their c.e.o. with the stock options and it's kind of ironic that emslie is getting as rich as he is on the stock options you're right it was determined that his predecessor did back they froze stock options to get maximum value for them. but again these companies are in business to make money they really like banks basically i mean
11:36 pm
instead of being called insurance companies because you know that with insurance you've got actuarial if you've got pools you've got long term investments these companies are recycling dollars year for year month for a month even are they really more like banks yes and they've been becoming more banks every year almost and in fact one of the big companies decided to change its charter to become a financial services company which is which it is and this these companies will be hard pressed to find the websites the word insurance or even that the tremendous care they they're in the business for health services business or something like that but they are in a they moved far away from the idea when you were when you were messaging for cigna . and. ultimately reach the point where you could reconcile that with any human being if i if i may put words in your mouth. what were the practices of the health insurance companies and or what are to this day that most stick in your craw that
11:37 pm
most concern you both morally and just practically well they turn people away who need health insurance for one thing they also have had a practice for many years of dumping the sick when people do get sick and i've got claims that are getting pretty high the insurance companies have had a practice of going back to look at the applications looking for some excuse to cancel their coverage and their incision it's called decision they've been jacking up the premiums a small businesses whenever an employee ordered and employee gets sick for many years which is a and then when the the business policy comes up for renewal they will often jack their rates up so high there's no choice but for that's not opposed to drug coverage that's why fifty one million of us in this country don't have coverage now it's it's because of the practices of these insurance companies to be able to reward the stephen him for this in the world how do we stop this break this we have a little love is not well for the big question but you know i think the health care
11:38 pm
reform all that was passed can require these companies to behave differently and it will do that but the worry is that they'll be working with their lobbyists on capitol hill to try to get these we speak to try to get some of the provisions that that should be in the law changed they want to they want to strip out some of the consumer protections the new regulations on remarkable wendell potter keep up the great work thanks for illustrating the good work thank you thank you so much for dropping by my pleasure just like the oil companies health insurance companies profit while the rest of us suffer stop patriotic it's parasitic. the death there is are spreading you know all those people who think that osama bin laden's takedown mission was actually fake in that bin laden was actually or is actually still alive or was dead a long time ago and frozen at least they'll think that way until they see the long form. even then i'm sure they'll find some other theory conspiracy theory to hang
11:39 pm
on to for a one stop shop for all your death or needs got a world of daily take a look at some of the headlines on the website today i was somewhat d.n.a. analyzed within twenty four hour service. d.n.a. evidence must be a lie not everyone believes bin ladin related. and speaks for itself varial it see upsets relatives of nine eleven victims as in what president obama really did was anger nine eleven victims not kill bin laden and then there was a worldwide daily poll in which visitors rest a sound off on the death of osama bin laden was popular response to the poll garnering twenty percent of the vote was the timing of obama's order was perfect to distract from his eligibility troubles a perfect response since it combines death the resentment. and the fourth bush response with seven percent of the vote was i'm skeptical bin laden is actually dead figures. there was radio host alex jones his take on bin laden's death
11:40 pm
yesterday on this network. who schama bin ladan according to two white house sources and i'm on record with this and another state department source we have one of the names just public in two thousand and two saying he guided he's frozen literally frozen and that he would be rolled out in the future if someday demand little alex join alex joins me now to talk more about this pressing issue he's a filmmaker author and investigative journalist and both host of the alex jones radio show alex welcome. hey it's great to be here i'd like to just make two central points here number one the cia last may twenty fifth in spy talk in the washington post two unnamed howell cia sources told the paper they did make fake bin laden videos those were fake or that the famous ones weren't even good computer windisch ns a linguist and others a list of the voice and even if it passes mean what saddam has frozen that means
11:41 pm
that you know bush was running a p.r. campaign trying to scare the hell out of us well expanding on that the point is that they do make fake videos they're going to be releasing those fake photos probably tomorrow so there is a history and you guys make it all partisan it was madeleine albright on fox news and seeing any end in two thousand and three that said the word was he was frozen and was going to be rolled out that's part of the record i was walter cronkite it was teresa heinz kerry that came out of the word was bush was planning to do that because they put that out he backed off so why ask why he would wars is that you are you suggesting alex that that's the reason that i mean this is just just the idea that the bush administration had bin laden's body all these years frozen and any time like three weeks before the election to help john mccain they could a roll that thing out and say hey look at this we just got it and now they're letting obama take credit for i don't get it. well dr steve but shannon served
11:42 pm
under baker kissinger and others as the deputy secretary of state those departments came on my show first in two thousand and two in april and said this and then i did talk to a large house source high level well known here in austin texas and then through another trusted media source and talked to another person in the white house that that is the case and we've seen all the dirty no i will actually leave that a lot of people told you this or told you that they knew somebody told you this and i'm just wondering why why would you know if they needed only as your question what they needed to keep they need to keep the myth of bin laden alive. you know for the next seven eight ninety years if they had admitted that he was dead then they would be able to teach school kids to be afraid of him that he was on the table so the t.s.a. has to stick their hands down a pretty good little cry get obama the credit for this why not but we we've gone
11:43 pm
around the line you can credit because this is i'm not partisan with this for the tea party doesn't believe it breitbart didn't believe it rolled it daily and i was just in your hats their issue my issue is i'm on record nine years ago with this information i'm not partisan it is a presidential level they may fight over who gets to be president but on the trillions on the wars on the torture on the secret arrest the democrats to the line just like the republicans just like they have the same secretary of defense that bush and robert gates so this is the same deal and this is to signal a new era in war and a lot of this me who was sandy and a friend pakistan and you bring pakistan i'm wondering where glenn beck fits into this you've said that he's a government operative and i'm wondering what agency he works for. well he works for basically the right wing foundations that that cover the right wing of the control paradigm to keep folks on the reservation fighting with each other and then there's the george soros ford foundation arm that basically created the cia
11:44 pm
the ford foundation and others are on record working is a guy who doesn't know yes and afterwards and yes yes in the one hundred forty seven national security i mean look our source is the same government that gave us a. very hungry at that this is the same government that gave us fake documents and told us that hydrogen blim pumps were anthrax systems. alex you're never going to you're going to never going to get me to disagree with this missile and i wasn't going to factory during monica lewinsky alice and her people alex i'm agreeing this is wag the dog i'm telling you yes i know our government has lied to us the gulf of tonkin and it was only thing that laureus in my lifetime frankly but i'm just wondering why the nine eleven truth there is would love one back if he were actually works for a government agency and and nine eleven truth is love glenn beck ok they they don't are a great i in that please let me your thoughts on william edwards hickman's becoming
11:45 pm
the role model for a vehicle that is so you're trying to create a partisan wedge to keep people in the partisan left right paradigm here glenn beck isn't the last twelve or so says we should remember the spirit the day after nine eleven same thing obama said sunday night these guys are basically pushing the same paradigm they have fake controlled opposition to make obama look like he's on the left while he passes an insurance plan written by the insurance companies as sub socialist health care while he continues the war glenn beck gives him left cover by attacking him claiming he's on the left look i'm way past this junior high gas that i got that william edward had been a serial murderer in one nine hundred twenty seven cut up a little girl. throughout her body. you know in the car when her father finally came to pay the pay the. ransom as as i'm sure you know he was the role model that i and rand used for her hero in the fountainhead in another one of her
11:46 pm
novels and basically was her idea of the superman somebody who is incapable of feeling the pain of others and we're seen this now in the the ryan budget plan i'm sunni right across the board and activism and libertarianism and. chicago school are not at all that i'm not of this i'm not. i'm not asking if you're into it i'm i'm asking your thoughts on objectivism and libertarianism coming out of a sociopathic mass murderer well if you want to label. you can put the labels i mean you can say stalin was a leftist and kill thirty million people or get there was i'm talking about iran here. iran is closed you know letters are no longer working she was in love with you guys is a total diversion out of the fact that we can't believe anything the government tells us they threw the body into the sea you've got black ops long history i mean private private lynch that turned out to be brooke heimer produced that whole thing she had under the truck then when the rest of her team said that they had had it
11:47 pm
had killed the are right yet as i said alex i know there's a long way sometimes our government is lied to us i'm not disagreeing with you about that but i'm trying to get some answers to some of these other things you say are bankers are controlled by the british royal family and who are eugenicists we have half a million brits it's your dish that. it was that it was the king of england the time it advocated was a big hitler supporter and they had eugenics fairs all over the us they set up our modern health departments to be racial hygiene thirty five states forcibly sterilized hundreds and hundreds of thousands of women and this is why this is our modern banking. you know ok you know get a great so full of world banking your job now is in reality i'm sorry we're out of time. and i wish them the medium gave us a longer time art market you're. going to see your job good bye alex it's good to have you and good to see you yeah ok back in two thousand and eight we called the
11:48 pm
burglars craziness and they were just eventually go away but they did and three years later the present united states was having to show everyone his difficult even that hasn't satisfied so maybe we should think twice before we dismiss the doctors could be around for a long long time. after the break tonight's daily take why we need less wars and bin ladin and more gandhi and him.
11:49 pm
you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so silly you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear see some other part of it and realized everything you saw. i'm trying hard to see if. it's the good the bad of the very agonizingly ugly person the good paul krugman poured into a recent study out of hamilton college to look at twenty six television pundits and graded them on how accurate their predictions were paul krugman turned out to be the top truth teller it should be noted the greek crewman also thinks we should opt the progressive budget from the progressive caucus in the house of representatives that includes tax hikes on millionaires and now there are scientific numbers to
11:50 pm
support women's insights and a nobel prize in economics too maybe we should all listen to him a lot more off the bat the donald in an interview with the new york times trying to talk about why he doesn't support same sex marriage and as usual from put forward intelligent and well thought out argument saying it's like in golf a lot of people are switching to these really long putters very unattractive it's weird i hate it and i'm a traditionalist and i have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay but i am a traditionalist. keep your golf metaphors yourself down better yet try spending more time on the golf course and less time pretending to run for president and the very very ugly republican congressman peter king the same guy who is investigating american muslim communities is becoming the chief advocate for torture and appeared on fox news last night and then again this morning to say this. we have change information several years ago right live from
11:51 pm
a show about the courier. for obama we obtain that information for waterboarding and serve those who say that waterboarding doesn't work they say that it should be stopped and if you use again we got vital information which directly rose to remodel actually you know while i'm not a fox but actually that's a lie the chairman of the senate intelligence committee dianne feinstein has confirmed that is not true even donald rumsfeld said it was. a let me guess this was another republicans this statement is not intended to be factually correct saying the thing right. that's very clear. if there's one thing that we can take away from the death of osama bin laden it's the war doesn't work bin laden wasn't killed because we have one hundred thousand
11:52 pm
troops on the ground in afghanistan he was killed thanks to support her intelligence gathering intelligence by the way that was not gathered through the use of torture as has donald rumsfeld who split simply said the useful intel did not come from torture and he was killed thanks to an elite force of navy seals two dozen a number who were able at swift swiftly on the intelligence and move in with a surgical operation with no collateral damage and with no one even knowing it happened until after they were done president obama didn't need a bullhorn on a pile or rubble or to make a dramatic landing on an aircraft carrier in half a bottle country back to the stone age and then throw one hundred thousand troops into pakistan last sunday to get bin laden he only needed two dozen well trained men. tragically similarly bush didn't need to carpet bomb cover will and launch a full scale invasion to get bin laden ten years ago in fact bin ladin could have been taken out nine years ago had bush just listened to his advisors who said that
11:53 pm
we had bin ladin cornered in the mountains of tora bora and a thousand marines could finish him off for good unfortunately bush said no to the marines he needed that for oil rich iraq. bin laden could have been nabbed days after nine eleven had bush taken up mona omar's offer to let afghanistan arrest bin laden and hand him over to a third country for a trial but instead of the surgical mission and instead of working with the afghans bush diverted those marines to iraq to launch another full scale war and told mullah omar where he could stick his offer bush wanted to go it alone. after ten years and trillions of dollars of going it alone we've learned one thing about this war strategy it only creates more war and more violence bush and bin ladin belong to the same school of thought they both believe the only way to win whether it be territory or hearts and minds is through extreme violence
11:54 pm
and war to kill off or kill enough of them that the rest surrender and ten years ago they both put in place this essentially the same strategy re littered the middle east with both overt and covert wars and bin laden countered everywhere we went with even more extreme violence and war al-qaeda for example wasn't even in a wrap until we got there and in the end but to both sides have to show. we are now no closer to stamping out religious extremism after ten years the taliban is on the rise in afghanistan again and now bin laden is dead and al qaeda is becoming less and less significant in arab world but because muslims are seen how to oxic bin laden's thinking it was not because of bush's workers. there are hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians dead five million more displaced just in iraq as a result of bush's and bin laden's wars war kills people it does not
11:55 pm
solve problems unlike bush and bin ladin martin luther king and mahatma gandhi knew war wasn't good for anything they both had visions they wanted to create a new world just like bin laden just like bush but instead of arming themselves instead of planting bombs in cars and flying planes into buildings and lobbing cruise missiles into civilian neighborhoods mahatma gandhi and martin luther king jr just sat there literally they just sat there they relied on their message and the righteousness of their cause and they sat there and they marched and they demonstrated and they didn't move and before long the masses bought him not because they were forced to at the end of a gun barrel but because a right prevailed over might because gandhi and king used nonviolence
11:56 pm
because they use nonviolence they were successful who are others like bush and bin laden of failed and we see the same dynamic playing out all across the middle east in north africa in egypt in tunisia we saw the two strategies collide peaceful protests clashing with violent government put downs and in both egypt and tunisia nonviolence won the day and both those nations there were two voices conspicuously absent in lodz and bush's no one wanted any part of their violent messages and why because the people are finally catching on that it doesn't work the arab revolts we are witnessing or taking down best bits like mubarak at the same time silencing religious extremists like than love. both bush and bin laden thought they could win the future with war instead they lost the last decade and bin laden has no future and because of bush's wars the future for the united states is looking weaker than
11:57 pm
it has in over a century if we really want to win the future as president obama has said he intends to do then we need to stop the wars and once again become a nation that builds up both its self and others that advocates privacy life and nonviolence the values education and human rights more than it does death and war. the biggest lesson out of the middle east is that the violent guy both lost and is pretty universally hated and the nonviolent people in egypt and tunisia are showing the way through their successes that others from our mosques to the united states should follow. and that's the big picture for tonight for more information on the stories we covered visit our website amanpour dot com and. also check out our youtube page at youtube dot com slash big picture r.t. and slash tom harpur this entire show is available as a free podcast on i tunes and don't forget to mark receive begins when you show up
