6:31 pm
the political. parties are touched. by guys welcome michel ancel on the obama show we part of our guests have to say on the topic now i want to hear audio just go out you tube to video response or to twitter for part of the question that we post on you tube every monday and on thursday the show long response is like your voice. all right it's time for tides tool time award and tonight it goes to the catholic church are actually goes to the united states conference of catholic bishops' the a five year study commissioned by america's catholic bishops was released. the media
6:32 pm
today and the study was trying to determine what caused the sexual abuse crisis that's haunted the church for years now this study came to one very steadfast conclusion of the all male celibate priesthood and homosexuality are definitely not to blame for the sex scandals how shocking right now is that the report came to love to different conclusions it said that the abuse secured occurred because priests were not prepared and monitored during the stressful time of the one nine hundred sixty s. in the one nine hundred seventy s. and yes i'm actually being serious about that this study says that greece were not ready for the social and sexual turmoil during that time period and the church is actually blaming the woodstock era for the priests systematically abusing boys yes that free love peace politics drugs and rock n roll just turned a priest into abusive pedophiles now this is the first time that we've heard the growing excuse the blade woodstock explanation has been floated by bishops when the priest abuse scandal first began exploding here in the u.s.
6:33 pm
back in two thousand and two and over across the pond the last year the church also tried to play woodstock for the church's problem but i'm honestly shocked that this is the best excuse that they have newsflash catholic church nobody bought of the new europe and nobody is buying it now now this new study was released today but it was initiated and hew thousand and six and was conducted by researchers at the john jay college of criminal justice in new york and the church paid nearly two million dollars for this report to be sounds like they already knew what they were going to say so why did they pay two million dollars and the bishops here in the u.s. who commissioned a study said that they hope the report is going to advance the understanding and prevention of child sexual abuse right if the catholic church actually wants to prevent child sexual abuse how about you start reporting three similar children but you look at the real issues that cause the scandal not just blame the sixty's and not shockingly that it compiled for the study was provided by the. churches diocese
6:34 pm
and religious orders itself which really doesn't sound all that fair and accurate to us now it's sad that the catholic church is even trying to pass this report off as a legitimate reason for the sex scandal the reason for the abuse is simple because the church is living in the dark ages it's two thousand and eleven the world has changed but the catholic church refuses to move into the twenty first century i think in fact they might still be living in the sixty's and that's why the conference of catholic bishops is tonight's tool time winner for their ridiculous report on what caused the sexual abuse scandal. well gamers are getting their fix again out of the playstation network is partially up and running after the massive data breach that left over one hundred million users unplugged but since april twentieth we've kept you updated on the network's preach and sony c.e.o. howard stringer's piss poor job of damage control not only the company wait six days to tell its own customers that their personal information including credit card data was at the mercy of malicious hackers now stringer is even claiming that
6:35 pm
the mega corporation can't guarantee that user information will ever be one hundred percent safe he says chalk it up to our bad new word world me those are his words of malicious hackers that will eventually target the global financial system so i guess so he was just the first step of this evil plan you know maybe the c.e.o. made that claim after hearing about sony's network suffering yet another attack this time involving users log in data and passwords say in order for gamers to access the network post blackout they have to re enter their information which is already in the hands of the hackers so you see the problem lies here now just add to that a pile of problems that sony has to deal with and at this point it's almost exhausting trying to keep up with the lawyers and the hacks the company is the layers of hacks the company is suffering from and all those too early to get any official numbers many analysts think that these types of casone a billion dollar. which is definitely going to have an impact on their products and
6:36 pm
networks in the future but in an attempt to save face the company has come up with offers to appease their angry customers not only will customers be able to purchase a form of insurance but they can also download two free games from the plone playstation store once it's up and running users can also look forward to giving gamers thirty days of play station plus membership and will even restart game of pace for users games that weren't sizable during sunday's blackout but here's my question is it even worth it for sony to give out all these we're so sorry gives if they can't even promise to secure their own network you don't see other gaming companies out there saying things like that the only reason sony is continuing to be the target of these militias attacks is because it's open knowledge that their networks had no protection whatsoever so my opinion telling the world that their network can never really be fully safe from future attacks it's like giving a floppy apology to all those people who dropped hundreds of dollars for their
6:37 pm
sought after products i propose sterner opens a booth where maybe frustrated gamers can i don't know pay twenty five cents have beat up the c.e.o. just think about it not only can the company get some of its money back but it will be a great stress reliever as well for the record that was a joke. how the battle over subsidies has taken capitol hill by storm like really it's the only thing they're talking about. going after easy public church. but we also know if this bill were to pass it would lower gas prices there's lots of things we can do you can start by eliminating the four billion dollars subsidy that you will companies get what they say congressman they say that will not affect the price of gas of course are going to say that they're getting the subsidies is ridiculous while the republicans are looking at getting rid of medicare cheney years from now at wiping out planned parenthood cutting back savagely on head start programs and saying that the reason they have to do all of
6:38 pm
this is because the most important issue is are getting deficit but it's not as important as protecting big oil and the totally unnecessary subsidies that they get from the american taxpayer you would think because of this bill as nine forty that the big oil and gas companies are getting all the subsidies making all the profits paying no taxes. and the rest of us are suffering nothing could be further from the truth we have huge subsidies there have been given to oil companies now and in one case at four hundred years made sense one hundred years ago doesn't make sense now when our companies have the highest profits of any corporations in the world. yesterday the senate failed to pass a vote to end two billion dollars in tax breaks a year to the big five now the battle is once again over drill baby drill as republicans think that that's going to drive oil prices down to that tax breaks
6:39 pm
offshore drilling none of that is going to solve the larger problems that this country have we ever get to move forward if politics and not logic are taking center stage joins me to discuss this is david robert senior staff writer at grist org david thanks so much for joining us tonight so like i said let's look at what's happening right we're arguing over ending tax breaks for the oil companies you have republicans saying that they want to drill baby drill to bring oil prices down neither of those really solve the long term problems but should they be arguing about that at all. oh we're in a sticky political situation in the chest prices are fairly. normal and it. is a better predictor of voter average of anger gas prices you guys will see gas prices tracked presidential approval ratings pretty pretty closely and always have the problem is there's almost nothing politicians can do about gas prices so i mean there's very very little they can do to assert just press particularly in the short
6:40 pm
term maybe you are a challenge for your horizon but in the short term there's nothing they can do but they can't come out and say there's nothing we can do so what you get is. almost entirely attempt at it everybody on all sides is posturing the only political question and substantive question is can you get something that's good for both of policy reasons out of this what is a certainly debate listen let's talk about it if politicians can't really do anything about it yet obviously they're going for perhaps the easy out which is making the oil companies the bogeyman what's really driving these oil prices up you can say that it's unrest in the middle east a lot of uncertainty surrounding not and it's also speculation on the markets so who does have the power to bring oil prices down. well look there's lots and lots of things that are sort of spoiled prices and even the experts don't mean is nobody should pretend that they really understand all that well why overprices do if you
6:41 pm
there's a lot of factors. under us in the middle east there's this huge surge in demand from developing countries which going on for years now and some of the short term goals there's speculation involved but but but the larger point is that over the long term oil is going to get more scarce and we know of the price is going to continue going up and if the price of oil continues to go up the price of gas will continue to grow up so substantively and substantive terms there's only one thing you can really to accept ourselves against all shocks against high gas prices that's use less oil and use less gas that were exposed it just turns out that that's not a particularly thrilling it's a little it's a move so what you have is obama trying to stir package some of that. reduction and use the much more the stuff that polls are including drilling it and
6:42 pm
crash on speculators. well of course you know trying to change the practices or the habits of an entire population is never a popular political move but then do you think that's also going to be our downfall i mean is there any way to break this cycle or will we constantly be stuck in the short term thinking the election cycle every few years and you know nobody ever wants to think ahead they only focus on the short term. a lot sooner or later discipline will or in the form of higher prices. is probably the least way to impose discipline of yourself but it works. and also shows that once just prices get over about four dollars or something. weekly significant threshold of problems why what's guessed it is do you start see real substantive changes in miles traveled the size of cars they get so older and things like that what we like to do ideally. and look ten years old at those prices
6:43 pm
going up and start. away and use changes. only standards and things like that and some of that is being done but it's just studs it's hard to get much more time for politically when you have the other side constantly demagoguing every year you know every time prices go up you claim whatever part of our and in that political environment it's very difficult to make sense. and you know i think we also have to talk about a larger issue here which is that there is no planning ahead ever because obviously politicians are trying to get reelected but politicians on both side of the aisle whether they be democrats or republicans no matter what face they want to put on publicly when they're having a debate on how they feel about oil companies they all get a lot of money when it comes to campaign donations from these oil companies so perhaps it's that corruption we have to deal with first. well look there's two
6:44 pm
elements of the corruption said specifically equality yesterday's vote was of course the ridiculous existence of a filibuster which means you have to get sixty votes to get anything done you can't operate on a majority vote like states of all other democracies do so there's that but if you want a great out of oil and gas donations the majority in the senate voted against the subsidies got about five million the head has got about five billion dollars in total from oil and gas companies the minority of senators who voted to preserve the subsidies and well over twenty million dollars from oil and gas companies so if you combine the filibuster lens you only need forty senators and then you combine that with the extraordinary resources available to do something nice and of course the free flow of money and some after citizens united is just an they're going to have the power to get in politics to their will for years to come unless there is some sort of change you want a grassroots uprising from from from voters and they demand something different
6:45 pm
right where they want to thank you very much for joining us tonight ag as those really high prices might end up being what they have matter when they turn to manning something different thanks. issue. we have to take a quick break but coming up tonight just as clarence thomas made a few remarks that romney pretty fired up some and give him a piece of my mind in our own flood of the sacrament and then grab a cocktail and join us for happy hour parties jenny churchill and christine firs hour will join us to discuss story of the police there can't get him out of there gingrich gets a shower of glitter and his new video that makes this ask it for on a verge of a new cold war take him. with the party.
6:46 pm
well. we haven't got the. safe ready because freedom. hey guys welcome michel ancel on the ellen show which part of our guests not to say on the topic now i want to hear our audience just go on to you seem to video responses are to twitter first part of the question the police host on you tube every monday and on thursday the show long response is the local. for. instance. funny.
6:47 pm
you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then he glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm sorry for the big picture. the recent conference with a guest of bar association him in his home state of georgia justice clarence thomas made a few rather surprising remarks regarding those who criticize the supreme court he
6:48 pm
compared those critics to sports fans and he wondered aloud if they're illiterate or just lazy and that is a direct quote he also went on to say you know just keep nagging imagining a nagging at some point it's gotta suck sometimes too much is too much really clarence that is so rich coming from you since he arrived at the supreme court nearly twenty years ago thomas has become a hard line conservative but the fact that he's openly criticizing people who talk about or ruling class is kind of laughable it's been a years since justice thomas asked this question of anybody presenting arguments before the high court and fast there's even a running tally on the last time that he actually asked a lawyer a question try that in february of two thousand and six here's my bigger problem with justice thomas if you don't like some of the people that are critics of the high court calling them out there why don't you stop making that ruling citizens united comes to mind january of last year the court struck down a provision of the mccain feingold campaign law that bars corporations and unions
6:49 pm
from paying for political ads and independently of candidate campaigns for basically corporations are now considered a person they're free to spend unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns and we've already seen that it works with record amounts of money flowing for organizations that don't even have to disclose their donors then it just yesterday we told you about a supreme court decision not to hear the case of mohamed versus jefferson data plant and the case involves five men who alleges the cia had them shipped to foreign countries to be tortured by the supreme court refusing to hear that case they want a federal appeals court ruling stamped that the president has the power to scuttle the men's lawsuit all because of the secrets so basically the justice docked on a very high profile case all because it was. controversial and of course don't even get me started on the story that we talked about last night where the way that they ripped apart the fourth amendment or now the supreme court has given a free rein to police to bust down your door without
6:50 pm
a warrant so just maybe clarence thomas that's why people are criticizing you in the supreme court how about you follow the law you stand up for the basic rights of everyone you stop pushing your political agenda while wearing a judge's rope calling you out for dismantling the constitution and our civil liberties does not make anybody illiterate or lazy i just think that's the way you'd prefer them to be so they wouldn't take notice of your dangerous rulings but too bad for you we do notice so expect the criticisms to keep on coming. all right it's time for happy hour this evening and joining me tonight is r t producer jenny churchill and for the first time r.t. correspondent christine hello ladies there as you join me tonight we talk a lot about video games on the show obviously and there's always
6:51 pm
a video game that causes a stir but this one is actually kind of crazy was commissioned by the chinese army and unlike most video games where you kind of just shoot at random guys and in uniforms that you can't tell where they're from this time they're actually shooting at men in american uniforms take a look. i mean if he does want to tell anybody that a cold war is coming i guess the way to do it is to make a video game and then put a flag on the back of someone's uniform i thought. it was really interesting and i thought one of the most interesting things was that this was approved of and excited the people in the people's liberation army the chinese army totally were onboard with us and i thought that was really really interesting although we have
6:52 pm
to keep in mind the video games that we have here in america. that are very very popular and i have to say that where normally i would be of the stance i'm against first person shooter games this is ridiculous let's not put reality and games where it telling people how in this case i have a little bit of a problem with the outrage because the distinction being made here is that in our military game you know there's not a uniform there's not a unified and i mean there's i was unaware and of ground zero where i was unaware that the taliban had a uniform that they wore because if they did you better believe we would be shooting at them. really wars we're involved in people are not wearing uniforms i mean i think the idea no matter what is the more realistic a video game the more people think it's cool the more people like to play it the graphics are pretty incredible in all of these whether it's a call of duty american army where this new one is called by the way it's called glorious mission the thing that i find kind of funny about it too is that here you
6:53 pm
have the chinese are using this is recruiting tool for their military but then also the recruit people think that they you know what the funny thing is that they're shooting in america and they're using it you know as a tool to give people onboard but they're using the age old american recruiting tool which is just give them a video game you know find out how much money warrior and you know it's more frightening about this is not the video game itself but the fact that the video game where they kill americans is a motivator where people are like yes let's kill and from what i understand it's used sort of as a training tool more than a recruiting tool like i said training really the wars fun just like a game let's move on to another one there's a parishioner from a church i guess i don't go to church but i guess people do this they can put people's names on lists that they want to pray for and somebody asked to pray for osa. bin ladin and it's causing a bit of an uproar members of the church i think that. this sunday we need jesus catholic church who prays for a mass murderer someone requested the church pray for osama bin ladin across
6:54 pm
appears next to his name in the church bulletins prayer list some americans are discussed it because surely wrong you know you just want to look that's really what he did to the american people you want anyway it's unconscionable and i think it's sacrilegious. i think that's kind of interesting because isn't it that religious to refuse to pray for somebody isn't the whole thing about being a good christian is they will pray for anybody that needs praying for. there's definitely a lot of phrasing about you know pray for your enemies and i think that there's definitely been a big divide in the christian church about whether or not some of them should be celebrated and some people say yes it's fine because you know the christian god is a god of justice however you know standing for justice and believing that justice has been done is a little different than running around with a flag pole add to that there's going to divide among parishioners in the catholic
6:55 pm
church but there has not been a divide in the people the leaders of the church the leaders of the church the next sunday after this happened they came out and they shook their fingers at the people in the pews and they said listen we don't condone you know this is a celebrate storytime right now but we don't condone anyone being killed and so i really think that there was a lot of discussion among priests at least in the catholic church about what this omens and the fact that you need to if you want to call yourself a catholic or christian for that matter you better step down before you're celebrating it to celebrate a little quieter. this person it was just killed it wasn't hard when you have to remind religious people that you're not supposed to love violating the law where i got it actually it's not about being perfect. ok hold them seniors under you know let's see under our next story because we have another clip your. story of what can you say about the guys because various met but this little video just i don't know brings a little joy to my heart let's take a look. the rainbow moves. the

falling on the snow the snow. was finally. you can years have kind of a rough week here he had a guy on video that told of your. don't don't do this but you know if we need to fill people in a little bit of background newt gingrich is actually anti-gay marriage even though he's been allowed to marry three different women cheat on him which is worse while she was actually in the hospital or yeah you know i never thought i'd say this but you know i feel a little bad for newt gingrich this week in addition to those things that you mentioned i mean he was on meet the press blasting paul ryan. and blasting his plan and then you go right wing social right here and then really doesn't you know you're right i mean this is a guy who's been in politics for a really long time and he should know better than to do all this well i mean he
6:57 pm
basically got the equivalent of a gauge heart feathering is what happened because i was all i gave rainbow springle yeah i had been told that it's really hard to get glitter off and i'm glad that it's my sitting next to him or she might have think that he was at a strip joint well you know you've been told it's really hard to get glitter off. you know something when you were a little girl and i was present during leningrad like confetti good or i guess the best part of that video is the part that we didn't see right after that one of the conservative guys who pushed this guy with the glitter out says we never show up to your old vents and disturb you like this which is so funny to me because they are so scared a lot of them of homosexuals of course they don't you know if you there are you get we got a rabbit ok unfortunately we're out of time but i think that was the you know a little glitter never hurt anybody that's it for tonight's show thanks for tuning animation exactly giving a speech to the arab world or just speech really do anything to whitewash the actions of this ministration we'll discuss it tomorrow but in the meantime just to get tickets. and of the a large scale on facebook and
