global financial system. the world is turning. eight speak with one voice. g. eight summit on r.t. . one of the world's most wanted war criminals arrested in serbia. general right now faces extradition to the hague over charges of genocide. russia and the us agree upon the need for a missile defense system that meets both country's security demands present retributive holds talks with barack obama at the g eight summit in france. moscow calls for an international investigation into georgia's crackdown on protesters demanding president saakashvili resign.
12:01 pm
international news and comment live from our studios here in central moscow this is r.t. with twenty four hours a day the top story this hour. the fugitive bosnian serb army general and one of europe's most wanted alleged war criminals has been arrested he's been on the run from the hague tribunal for over fifteen years after being accused of genocide and crimes against humanity. as more. we do know that a d.n.a. test will be conducted to determine whether this man is actually and we understand that the results of this d.n.a. test will be made public within the next seventy two hours or so now this happens after almost sixteen years that has been on the wanted list internationally serby has been looking for him he is being accused by the international tribunal in the hague on the crimes in the former republics of yugoslavia of genocide and crimes
12:02 pm
against humanity in particular the infamous srebrenica. massacre which happened in the ninety's and during the bosnian war but all my times i've been to serbian working there i've heard many different opinions about. this close ally who was also arrested three years ago and now being on the trial in the tribunals in the hague clearly this is a big day for serbia by all means so one part of the society will clearly be trying to protect the law just the others will be saying that this is the end of the this is the happy end to the story and now as long as the detention of outcome i just i don't know what kind of fish has been one of the one of the conditions under which serbia could be accepted to the union so these people will probably be half you know thinking that this would mean probably mean that brussels can now have a different opinion about service accession to the european union but many euro skeptics have been saying that the tribunal is not always making clear decisions
12:03 pm
and that sometimes is the syrians are biased. the serbian people have long been divided in their attitude towards her like i'm an outage correspondent. who was born and has spent most of my life says his arrest could make this division even greater. i have to say that the rule of law history books is not very well defined is actually divided into two and something that he was and he still is a national hero that you can slowly up on the other hand there are a lot of people in syria who want to join the european union and as this was one of the main conditions for the entrance for these people it's going to be a really good news as for myself i can see that actually when they first started searching for him he could still be seen on the streets of belgrade which means that maybe they knew him as in case of. just where he is but they were just waiting for right moment to catch him i also have to say that this will raise
12:04 pm
a lot of questions for the serbian president and unfortunately this could divide the people of serbia even more. right around international affairs says the hague tribunal will now try to confront the fugitive bosnian serb leaders captured. obviously the prosecutors the will try to confront courage versus knowledge and i confidently expect their long term strategy will be to have one try to pin the blame on the other and in the end it will be a minus sum game in terms of prisoner's dilemma model you know other words they will both be worse off which would be the best possible scenario for the having been to the hague both as a an expert witness in there is a material witness i'm well aware of the folk that it is a highly politicized institution that has been used over the years to provide this
12:05 pm
retroactive. judicial verification of the political position of the western powers there to the surface or indeed the main culprits for all that has come to pass in the former yugoslavia and mark my words over the next few days instead of applauding serbia for finally catching large you will see in the western media yet another work of serbia phobia reminding everybody of srebrenica and. a thousand dead that is march is greatest alleged crime so instead of actually trying to bring serbia a step closer to normalcy this will be used yet again to show just how nasty those darts that we serbs are now if serbia does during the i think it will be the first time in history that a rat has joint on to
12:06 pm
a sinking ship. so each serbian writer on international affairs talking to r.t. from belgrade a little earlier. e.u. and the euro zone's financial woes will be among the things discussed by leaders at the g. eight summit in the french town of some talks have already been held on the sidelines of presidents of russia and the u.s. met and agreed the need for a missile defense system able to meet the national security demands of both countries possibly by twenty twenty and he said as the latest. one of the big topics of discussion here at the summit is of course going to be the economy the crisis especially the one facing the euro and that's actually one of the first strong statements that we heard come out of the g. eight from herman van rompuy who is the president european council he said quote we will not let the hero fail now this is the most frank statement preferred from a high ranking official on the euro in months now and it could be assumed that that
12:07 pm
means after this one statement that european leaders are scared that it is actually possible for the euro to fail and they're going to be doing their very best to make sure that doesn't happen so we're going to hear a lot of discussion on how best to deal with figaro crisis of course there's a lot of criticism coming from people when it when you look at the fact that these spending cuts are being made at home would be this money is being spent on military intervention in foreign countries but the one good thing about about the g. eight that it allows for leaders to meet as a group of eight it also allows them to meet one on one face to face discuss the issues that only focus really on their bilateral relationship with russia and the u.s. one of the hot topics for that now for years has been missile defense they signed the new strategic arms reduction treaty last april that was a huge step forward but still russia has concerns that america is not as transparent when it comes to its plans are for future miss out offensive system
12:08 pm
anywhere here at the russian border we heard some positive statements from both presidents they do seem to think that steps are being taken slowly but they are being taken president obama is saying that he believes dialogue could be intensified to make sure new approaches are found that both countries signed acceptable in terms of their national security and president medvedev saying that he doesn't think an actual agreement will be seen into the year twenty twenty or something but he don't believe that now is the time for him and obama to make the crowd work. a job a friend iraq that is not even miss. defense question will be resolved in the future probably around twenty twenty so we have to lay the groundwork for future generations of politicians partnership of our countries in the future. so in general the meeting between obama and meant it was optimistic a funny note in this often happens for some reason our way rather than america tends to sit down i do tend to mix up the slack so easily see how to meet imitative
12:09 pm
with the american flag behind him and rock obama with the russians like that once again happening today and also some positive words from barack obama on russia's excesses of the w t l you believe style done that needs to be intensified and of course something that russia and the u.s. have always cooperated on that is terrorism in terms about afghanistan and also when you speak about one of the most wanted it's still terror still kumari who is from russia says the are responsible for some of the most horrific terror acts in the us it was announced today in fact that the u.s. is offering five billion dollars to help the marks that in itself is a very positive part of the us the u.s. reset. and these are now reporting that i want to discuss the ongoing summit on our joined live from brussels by michelle cottle he's an investigative journalist and author on international affairs thanks very much indeed for joining us so here we have eight countries which regard themselves as the most influential countries in the world but what about the balance of power between these g. eight members has that changed at all over recent years. i think the u.s.
12:10 pm
is still living in europe but there is a global decline of the u.s. economy because it's a state in bankrupt it's an economy in decline so why the u.s. is trying to do is to keep the domination on the world both with the resistance of for russia china be the emerging power of countries of the south like brazil and others is more and more difficult for the u.s. to keep the controls. this is the key for the aggressivity eventual russia and china on the face of it everybody seems to be getting on very well together but in light of what's been happening in in libya in the middle east will we see any tensions behind the scenes at all because of pairing about of course russia and china could have vetoed that no fly zone resolution by the u.n. and it didn't but they clearly being very unhappy with the way that nato has pursued that military campaign do you think we will see some sort of tensions
12:11 pm
between what between the members i'm. not sure i heard very well your question but what is obvious is that there was a manipulation from the beginning the u.s. and allies pretended that it was only to protect a sort of humanitarian war you have to remind that every war from the west is always humanitarian and then afterwards you discover there was a pretext and there were a lot of what i'm calling media allies so actually it was obvious that it was a wall to change the regime in libya or not to protect people because it was a war a civil war organized by u.s. and western secret services so the idea was to get control of the oil of the banking reserves and to. change the relation of forces the usa and europe are. serious. disputes in the middle east and so they want to try to keep the control of the middle east to protect israel but he also has
12:12 pm
a danger for them to interrupt what it but the argument cameron saying this is a once in a generation moment to promote pro-democracy movements in the arab world and also of course the humanitarian issue there don't they have credibility that humans that is a big lie as usual this the same as the lies of tony blair because democracy or period don't explain to me if the us in. a democracy why do they send saudi troops to fly on peaceful demonstrators in bahrain why. why do they hold the regime in yemen which is completely a dictatorship why do they protect them and fire on the peaceful demonstrators why did they protect ben ali and mubarak until the last second this is just a manipulation when we see those sort of arguments you're putting forward now being discussed at the g. eight and also maybe perhaps contemplating what to do next in syria where we see those sort of issues being discussed in fact is the g eight the right place to
12:13 pm
discuss this sort of thing well sorry the song is difficult from what i heard from no question i think we are assisting the sort of permission to recolonize the world the usa. are trying to prevent the they don't want a democracy out of the countries in the middle east they don't want a democracy in africa you have to remind that almost all the data sheets in africa and others are in style finance protected id within allies so i think what they want is to keep the control of oil they want to keep their control room materials fifty one through impede real democracy in the arabic and african countries why would they want to be spreading their influence around the rest of the world when trouble is clearly occurring at home and i'm referring of course to the e.u. last time the summit was in france back in two thousand and three one of the key issues was of course promoting enlarging the euro zone now we're seeing in grave
12:14 pm
trouble now if there are problems at home while these countries concentrating on their own economies economies rather than trying to spread their influence and resources elsewhere. exactly the question is the answer actually you see in spain in from the sea in many countries people in the street because the policy of all governments is a catastrophe you have no money for pensions you have no money for jobs in the u.s. schools and hospitals are crumbling and instead of giving money for that. spending billions of dollars or euros to make war for the profits of multinationals in arabic african countries and so on so it's truly a policy of the governments against their people that's obvious you're in brussels just finally do you really think the euro is at stake and it could indeed collapse . well i think you have to consider the question more generally as i said
12:15 pm
the usa is bankrupt state just consider a huge deficit of the federal system also the states and europe of course if it's facing a lot of problems through so i cannot tell you this will happen soon but it's very obvious that this economic system is crumbling the western multinationals and their governments are trying to impede that we come to a multi-polar world where the people can decide where they won't like alice in latin america and surround it trying to impede that the same happens in africa and i think the only future for the people is that we have relations independent from the e.u. a c. and then from the nato and we open a new page in history i mean a multiple of world we shall call and thanks very much indeed for sharing your thoughts with us live here on r.t. thanks for your time. well while world leaders gather in france to deal with the

new world in greece part of the old world threatens to collapse. the chances that greece to exit the eurozone by the day. as thousands expressed outrage over austerity measures we ask how likely is it that greece will drop out of the eurozone that's coming up in a few minutes. but first moscow says the violent crackdown on mass protests in georgia is a blatant abuse of human rights and is demanding an international investigation thousands of taking part in five days of protests calling for president mikheil saakashvili to resign they were dispersed by armed policemen ahead of an independent state military parade thousands ended up in hospitals and almost one hundred in jail for the sort of first in the middle of events that. the day of independence military parades going ahead today as planned president saakashvili addressing
12:17 pm
a crowd of mostly military personnel many of the civilians staying away that heavy military presence many of the race have been blocked off and quite possibly not many of them wanting to turn out after the violent clashes we saw a right thing as police try to disperse the crowd of demonstrators outside the main parliament building president saakashvili said in his speech today about freedom of speech the people but of course that comes on the back of this show as violent force from the police with a number of. the number of demonstrators you really didn't want to be in that main part of an area when the violence kicked off it happened very very quickly they were firing gas into the crowds watercolors and rather is extremely confusing now actually my colleague who was with me at the time to a game of rain from the spanish and i was i was hit by a brother philip when we were trying to find a safe place to continue covering the if i could assure.
12:18 pm
you different place to stick with your guns. i can't say for sure if it was a bottle or something else but i can't say for sure because the police without asking anything they just beat into the crowd was dispersed. the scenes of violence really very disturbing it was just the silver revolution many of the crowd demonstrators were of the older generation they were struggling against pensions and high prices and many of them ended up with quite serious injuries there's still a large number of people in hospital but we were there at the scene throughout the evening we can show you more of just how these violent clashes unfolded. it was held by the opposition is the day that we did turn in judges teacher instead cheap people. as the protests aimed at ousting president saakashvili ended in violence and bloodshed
12:19 pm
a huge pools of riot police moved in on the crowd just minutes after midnight until his day of independent. thought that you're right. and that thankfully seems to be right despite that you have the right was quite haven't the mess started not even we got police car and that in the background here we got one on the other side so then a space of a surrounded. as a police closed in water cannons were fired into the crowd rubber bullets and gas followed seriously injuring both demonstrators and journalist a police officer was killed when he was run over by a car and a protest the dies in front of the parliament building the scenes of violence all the more shocking given that many of those involved were of an older generation. we were standing peacefully one riot police on the ground and started beating me my relatives also suffered they smashed one of my friend's face and left another one
12:20 pm
on mobile to stand. you can see from my face the kind of force they used and i think god i mean a lot of people don't value human life. it had been dubbed the silver revolution gita the older crowd they turned them straight in against lay pensions and rising food prices for five days they held the main t.v. building into police say before taking their protest to the main parliament. initial numbers of protesters at the weekend of peace among the opposition parties themselves they will lead through the streets on wednesday the crowds once again turned. to the police to use force. programs through to show. the well and the. demonstrators were vastly outnumbered and witnesses to the name then the two thousand and seven protests in which six hundred

were injured see that this time around police presence was even greater and the things they used just as. questions are already being asked about whether the scale of people's used was justifiable. and many were arrested and many more injured did we on the streets in the violent clash. the. main fan from which the leaders of the opposition gave birth speaking of the earlier on just before the fighting broke out was saying she would maybe be holding negotiations that didn't happen they wanted. instead the price that the ending how it started and things the violent. see. the curia former georgian local representative an expert on politics in the caucuses the violent crackdown on protests will just provoke more action even for georgia

the turmoil in greece is threatening to turn into a tragedy the country's e.u. commissioner thinks membership of the single currency is under threat the first time a senior european official has admitted as much as a couple with the latest mass protests in athens expressing outrage at austerity cuts and almost alexander laws says that greece is heading for the euro exit. the chances that greece exit the euro zone nineteen by the day there are two ways out just be very frank about this the first way out is the way out where you go way say where greece is we can't take the austerity measures are we something's got to give and we're going to default on our debt and leave the euro area if not the only

solution is be extremely clear about is the european countries agree to bailout. indefinitely each and every country which has got problems in effect a fiscal union and for that we need a lot what do we need where we need the country from northern europe to say we accept to pay for us of the neighbors however appear to be extremely unlikely i think that the issue of greece exiting. the euro is probably going to be. an outcome which is going to happen. what i not have a quick look at some other world headlines in brief in our world update this hour an explosion has rocked yemen's capital killing pretty people according to the authorities there your position says the cause was government troops bombing residential areas comes as fighting rages for the fourth day in the capital very much time over seventy people being killed yemen's leader refuses to sign a deal to step down the spike the escalating.
