rachel martin here broadcasting live from washington d.c. coming up today on the big picture a. new website with twenty four seven live streaming news towns what to do about the ongoing financial heart unlimited high quality videos for download. and stories you may never find the names you. know them so. the political. posts aren't much to say.
6:31 pm
hey guys welcome to shell and tell the obama show we've heard our guests have to say on the topic now i want to hear our audience just go on to you tube to video on our twitter for part of the questions that we post on you tube every monday and on thursday the show long response is we let your voice be heard. all right it's time for tonight's tool five award and it goes to newt gingrich his apology tour with the g.o.p. continues after he trashed the paul ryan medicare plan nearly two weeks ago it probably remember when newt's gaffe was on meet the press. i don't think right wing social engineering is any more desirable than enough to win social and i don't think imposing radical change from right to left is a very good way for free society. i think we need a national conversation to go to
6:32 pm
a better medicare system with more choices for seniors. and after making that statement the g.o.p. faithful went absolutely crazy on news that pundits and t.v. host said he was unelectable i've heard chanting attacking the g.o.p.'s plan to phase out medicare with about your program and just days after making that black so a statement on meet the press you traveled i worked for the first time since announcing that he was running for president and one voter showed his disgust for newt all the t.v. cameras are rolling here each week you just. hear you going to the car in the snow ice and. snow i'm sure you're horror stories you're going to get out we're going to get these are a fool of yourself. ouch call the four and embarrassed on national t.v. now first the former speaker of the house who has a habit of self-destruction took a hard line would not apologize for his comments he said he was misquoted and then
6:33 pm
he tried to blame the issue on the liberal media if you're construed if you prefer it got your press tour of america out of context but i'm sure that my message to contribute to the very careful. ok we're going to ram going down people's throat. but the thing is new spin didn't work a jets campus theory live on right wing talk radio and on fox news the news finally admitted he was wrong and he begs for forgiveness for forgiveness from the scorned republican establishment because i want to set a precedent for a new kind of presidential campaigns and i thank bill bennett former frankly for helping me walk through what people were hearing which is not what i had intended to say i made a mistake and i called paul ryan today as a very close personal friend and he said that. now while they would have apologized not everybody out there is buying it a large number of campaign donors dropped him after the meet the press comment so
6:34 pm
now newt's trying to stay afloat and on thursday his two thousand and twelve campaign sent out an e-mail asking for donations to help keep the conversation going when it comes to cutting in title of programs so basically if you donate a new campaign together you can save the paul ryan plan who's not going to save it from himself this sad politician in the ninety's has turned out to be a joke and in two weeks this poll numbers have completely collapsed and now he's forced to beg for money to save a program that he called right wing social engineering and that's why newt gingrich is that i've told time warner. cell phone users listen up because your phone is probably going to be bugged by the government believe it or not the f.c.c. says that all cell phones will be required to carry a chip by two thousand and twelve and it's for the purpose of safety that a way for the government to reach you directly but we wonder are these new measures there really to keep you safe or simply to keep you scared archies marina portnoy has more. the country that created blackberries and gave birth
6:35 pm
to i phones. has more than three hundred million wireless users and in the name of national security the u.s. government will soon have a direct link to each and every handheld device it's like he says it's there for a good reason people don't know they have to pay for it gathered at the scene of the september eleventh terrorist attacks federal in new york city officials join the c.e.o.'s of the four largest wireless carriers to announce the nation's new tech tool and alert system enabling the president and government agencies to blast every american with text messages warning of terror threats weather disasters and kidnappings cell phone alert system will launch in new york city and washington d.c. by the end of the. here expanding nationwide there after wireless users may have
6:36 pm
the option of not receiving certain alerts though americans will not be able to opt out of its messages sent by the u.s. president opponents say politicians are promoting more fear while providing little protection now we have a system of mandatory and inescapable alerts through every cell phone in the land in the event that the government decides that something's happening that we ought to know about now just as the introduction of the patriot act came right after nine eleven so this new kind of technological invasion comes to us without any public discussion right after the assassination of osama bin laden and why you professor and author mark crispin miller says americans are living in an age of creeping authoritarianism and scare tactics they use fear for any kind of government that craves more control over people's lives and thoughts is that it
6:37 pm
makes people malleable it makes them obedient i mean you go to any airport today and you can see this in action people are meekly taking off their shoes meeting they're getting groped under the auspices of airport safety babies senior citizens and everyone in between must now endure pat downs or pass through body scanners before boarding in the case of muslim americans that may not be enough sixty's following the killing of osama bin ladin for a moms on two separate u.s. flights were illegally kicked off planes for looking suspicious and you have a few hate mongers who the who can can can and rouse that you know you've opened notions you know enough of people do they play on people's emotions to play on people's ignorance about islam and muslims you see and also this was created a climate of fear that you see if you see something suspicious in a parking lot or in the store say so. immediately in december the department of homeland security began encouraging americans to report suspicious activity to the
6:38 pm
country's largest food retailer wal-mart's partnership with law shinton has been accused of perpetrating a climate of panic and subsequent need for more surveillance you need to create an entity for people to rally behind wars and the fact that we're spending over fifty percent of our taxes on war and our national defense and there's really no threat directly to this country and they need to keep this following the assassination of enemy number one and american lawmaker called for an increase in rail safety funding and the creation of a no ride list as u.s. officials warn of more terror threats following bin laden's death many americans remain concerned others are left wondering about the dangers of for seeking too much liberty for security. archie new york. is college worth it that's the question that many americans are asking themselves as more and more graduates find themselves unable to get
6:39 pm
a job and saddled with that in fact sixty five percent of americans have student loan debt and that average college student least school owing twenty four thousand dollars according to a report by the new york times student loan debt is expected to reach one trillion dollars this year even surpassing the credit card debt epidemic in america so what's a student to do peter thiel the co-founder of pay pal things that they should stop wasting their time and dropout these are the two million dollar fund they give students who drop out one hundred thousand dollars to work on projects that the breakthroughs in technology and science but which option carries more risk joining me from our studio in new york to discuss this is attorney denies he live in founder of the thin law firm united thank you so much for joining us tonight so for starters i want to hear from you do you think college is worth it these days. well the fall is an inverse and i was looking at college education as a based on return on my money not today i don't think it's a good investment what if our if you look at the unemployment numbers i mean after
6:40 pm
all they're much lower for those who have a college degree they're at around four percent versus those who only have a high school degree who is unemployment is around ten percent well even with that being so what does a person to do coming out of school today this year or next year if somebody comes out with an average of twenty five to thirty thousand dollars of student loans the wages and the economy are not allowing for the income to be produced that's necessary to pay those loans back i mean sometimes what we're thinking about currently is inflation going to go higher than what we can afford is it going to help us avoid pain or student loans or will in future now some people out there are speculating that a college education that's the next bubble that's going to burst because he's going to realize that it's just not worth it and they're going to stop sending their kids to school but if you think that's true manipulate this is something that's been so ingrained in our culture and something that your time since childhood is that you
6:41 pm
you go to school and then you go to college and that's the path of life. well society demands that corporate america requires that we know that if we want our children to have a good future and a successful one and we have to send them to school the question is however are people more successful because of the education they receive over the over the four years or is it because they're four years old that's something that's that can be argued on both ends so i don't really know what the exact answer would be all right so are you going to send your kids to college. absolutely look at the end of the day we know that education is going to help or kids it's going to everyone around their children as well but if we're looking. from a perspective was of dollars and cents right now the investment in school is a bad one we don't know if we're going to get
6:42 pm
a return on our money because we don't know what the schools are going to prepare us for and what the economy is going to allow us to bring in as far as income right now it's difficult to actually gauge of that's a good investment so then what would you recommend that people do i mean i'm curious what do you think of this idea. where he set up a fund for q million dollars he's actually encouraging people to drop out of school and is willing to hand over one hundred thousand dollars for them to you know invest to innovate to come up with breakthroughs and technologies that really a good idea to encourage people to drop out. well first of all i want to mention there is most likely all torn out of most of their. let's say somebody comes to. brings a great idea he gives them one hundred dollars to one of us at the end of the day that's going to be his to use so the motive there is going to be a bring me an idea whether you're in college or out of college those are matter to me i'm looking for new bright ideas and i'm willing to pay one hundred thousand
6:43 pm
dollars for the next breakthrough is that a good thing to motivate kids to drop out of school absolutely not i would recommend look for state institutions don't pay the high tuition so if you can go to a state local school go for it it's going to be a lot cheaper as long as you get your education you're going to be well prepared i'm wondering when we look at silicon valley you look at some of these tech giants you look at people like mark zuckerberg do you think if they're giving out people all the wrong impression that you know it's really easy to just drop out of school and to start this tech firm that you never know might become one of the one of the biggest companies in the entire world i mean there's such an emphasis these days i fail on engineering and sciences and technology in school because that really is the next frontier but how do you warn people adequately that not everybody's going to be the next mark zuckerberg. look the motivation is there come up with your bright ideas don't limit yourself always come to your parents are teachers with
6:44 pm
some bright ideas you never know what's going to happen so that you never want to limit yourself you know want to motivate your kids in the wrong direction but currently the education is just necessary society demands of corporate america silicone they demanded so it's like hitting the lottery and. sensually good hit the lottery and many of the innovators hit the lottery because they were the right place at the right time and they had that idea and it was clear essentially you do need that education long term because you never know what that tech savvy company is going to do in a year corporate america demands you get an education i guess and sounds like corporate america demands that you be and that it's definitely a tough situation out there going at it thank you so much for joining us tonight. thank you for our reward. and also to come on this friday night fireside friday and then we have happy hour they allowed to compile them here but photos of potential
6:45 pm
g.o.p. candidates and they're pretty good and it appears that some people don't realize the new news network isn't actually real news stick around for that and much more in just a moment. here the we in the park or the lead doesn't love one will lead. we haven't got the shows here good to say for get ready because of the freedom. hey guys welcome to shower as hell on the alone a show we've heard our guests talk to say on the topic now i want to hear audio
6:46 pm
just go onto you tube the video response board to twitter for part of the questions that we've posted on you tube every monday and on the first day of the show your response is going to leave your voice be heard. so the. first. few. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so sleep you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else you hear sees some other part of it and realize everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big fish.
6:47 pm
it's nice for you side with your. this week gore elected officials gave away your rights and i'm talking about their reauthorization of the patriot act for four more years i told you this was kind of it specially after the announcement last week that john boehner and harry reid had decided to extend three controversial provisions with quote as little debate as possible and they almost have their way and back at the end it came down to only one senator from kentucky rand paul who tried to give your civil liberties a voice and you know it all got we're trying to ask for a debate trying to remind his fellow lawmakers of this is a democracy we have
6:48 pm
a constitution with fundamental values that protect its citizens instilled in it's painted by some pundits as a lunatic the worst of all harry reid use the unpatriotic you want to help terrorists are going to he said by asking for a simple debate on this issue rand paul would quote increase the risk of a retaliatory terrorist strike against the homeland and hamper our ability to deal in truly fatal blow to al qaeda you know harry if the patriot act had been dealt a fatal blow to al qaeda in the ten years that it's already been around yes i've got a feeling that's not going to accomplish that goal now either but i think of my guest yesterday julian sanchez said it that harry reid is more afraid of a debate then terrorism almost all of them are so they spineless politicians would rather not ask any questions at least of all people are so answering they'd rather keep everyone scared keep the wars going keep on grooving the budgets for those wars keep of proving measures to strip their constituents of their constitutional
6:49 pm
protections because it's easier to do people scared and shut them up and if anyone dares raise their voice just label him a terrorist lover. orange free the same way for the government gets away with keeping us in the dark about what information they're collecting and about who will label it a state secret that's inextricably linked to our national security which takes priority above all it's more important to me and my rights is more important than you and yours do you really think that any other type of legislation would be allowed to be adduced signed by the president while he's in france just in time for the midnight deadline and the auto pen that wasn't even planned it will first they considered spending god knows how much money to fly it to you and i feel like this is reach a point of complete lunacy you can quit reading science fiction novels because we're in one for there's no last page here there's no existential question that you ask at the end before you close the book and move on your life this war mongering
6:50 pm
surveillance state that has no regard for anyone or anything but power. is real. ok it's ride a ride for a long weekend though it's an i pad three hours a really happy hour and joining me tonight is politico's david guetta needs that r t correspondent lauren lifter the security guy he's going to be. so we work in i mean we work in the new you do more news than i do i do an opinion show but i think it's fair to say most people out there know that the onion is a news that all the onion is totally fake news and you would hope that people know that especially if you watch certain clips like this one. let's go now to the case
6:51 pm
the whole nation is watching the military trial of m q one military drone here four to five for less a terrorist tragic bombing of an afghan wedding after nearly a month of various testimony it's here four to five itself will finally take the stand today to answer for the bombings which killed more than three hundred afghan civilians and stirred widespread outrage across the globe. oh it's so sad that that's true right these days nobody's ever going to get charged for killing somebody by pushing a button on a drone but the point is that there are people out there that really do think that you know is real and somebody went through and compiled off of people's facebook profiles the news stories that they linked to and what they said so here were some of our favorites first of all people really believe that the harry potter ending is now split into seven new movies which i would return which. i mean i mean they're part of movies have there been of course they're going to make their money behind for their money but how many books are there there's like six or seven books right
6:52 pm
would they make more movies and if you're a size they make a lot of money people that are in the harry potter you know for would be to say well you know they would want it and they wouldn't believe it so that's the thing is you got really excited about those but some of the political winds all the books i didn't they. just christ someone's heart but that isn't actually true. another one of the people really how israel's obama makes it through another day to resist the urge to release all of us nuclear weapons at one point to launch them one place is that all i want to even started commenting on that one being like oh there's the nobel peace prize winner for you right i would think that like the tea party and some of his critics would say they wouldn't believe that because they would say you know he would never be strong enough to carry weapons out while he's away to be true when it was. ok this one though is by far the best we have mega bases all over the world and nobody cares about but this one got people really riled up planned parenthood eight billion dollars abortion and. planned. abortion play
6:53 pm
a portion of course i don't protest at the capitol over this right now how many people actually think it's true because rallies are already a girl you know are born just like one can all do you see the common cause of it was so sad what is this country. facebook like the comments section right that's what is going to be going to the people who can't discern. that stuff i left if they're watching the drone story they probably have a better sense that actually drones are attacking other countries they're people that a lot of the mainstream media that's true but you know what they're not reading or they only read the headline are they getting past the first time it was you know something we want more harry potter so they're going to write i would read the aren't you starting to say we i think people are probably more difficult people if they're reading a new news article versus watching one of their videos because the videos are just so so in your face so the obvious let's move on to some of your book photos that
6:54 pm
the atlantic actually put together the potential g.o.p. two thousand and twelve candidate and some of them are pretty good we're going to start off with mitt romney who i know he was kind of looks like romney or maybe when they were saying well we're previewing you know what. he was in the glee club you know yes a lot of activity i don't think you got it right for the second hour and totally looks like mitt romney is over once i don't think ok sarah palin she's up next. you know yes he was supposed to be a beauty queen and that's what they're for seeing what i assume to one meters are saying trump on each other i just don't think that looks like i just got it's a very attractive photo of her because i just don't think that she looked all that attractive when she was younger apparently looks attractive woman like thirty you know life goes if anybody went through it and i picture it like they would be disgusted i'm pretty sure i looked horrible and at caryl's people are going to get i don't or they will tim paul and see oh yeah. sorry tony danza with
6:55 pm
a line through. simple and he was kind of attractive to me with not one jon huntsman i really love his hair. i'm. looking. as wide as it is long it's just see i wish he were going over to china with that only i was he probably was he was a rockstar to go to or what about when you don't want me and he has used. drugs that i could write so i think that he was fine with it michelle cottle and do you go she she looks way less ghostly she looks like her and she looks pretty i guess that's like a pretty plastic surgery maybe she should and she was a cheerleader they also had a picture of him and we're engaged herman cain we're almost done here. we will you totally are more of the same events all around i know i was most likely to succeed both he was voted both yes all right now there's now president ok ok like more and everybody knew in high school more can you succeed. although it's very much like
6:56 pm
like around today just really you know can some good it best all around i like t.v. licenses yeah but i kind of scares me that ron paul and herman cain herman cain also is a total you know as long as says he the time so there's a new thing they can put on a good day all around a guy i don't last one we have a new gingrich. and when you win you know i said causes or would be very unsettled today that he would be a hipster today and voted mostly into legend a. united nations had him with a newspaper in his hand so people don't younger harry is what the controller is saying listen when i hear your last story we only have a couple seconds but in new york officials are proposing that high school curriculum include lessons on what mothers can do if they give birth to a baby that they don't want and tell them a safe way to get rid of the baby. so sad but it's only when necessary and i don't think that's i thought i think that that's really smart that's actually how i'm saying a sad event or something to actually have these you know our society i would say if the teacher is the first person going to go out on this that said like i mean why
6:57 pm
is a family member. or someone involved that you could turn to on if you're such an idealist why do you think these women are throwing away their babies because the totally bradley cooper didn't go to mom and dad as they already are is nam leaders and a grandmother and and a family friend and it goes outside the instructive class that they can go through with this problem like this you know i'm going to die right away their babies they feel like there's nowhere to go so this is this is instructive it's interesting to see how did you know it's troubling them that there is a law that you could abandon your baby somewhere you know it certain safe havens and you won't be prosecuted because that's what they're worried about so they end up with a runaway absolutely don't put that idea where if you would tell your career you know why can't they talk to me in counseling or even from my side i mean why you don't know you throw surprised you guys i have to wrap it up unfortunately but the sad sad but true end of story are you guys out there good night show thanks for tuning in will be off on monday from oriel day but make sure to come back on tuesday the government got one step closer after a vote in the senate to having the power to blacklist piracy websites so we'll
