rachel martin here broadcasting live from washington d.c. coming up today on the big picture a. new web site which twenty four seven live streaming news towns what to do about the ongoing financial hari unlimited high quality videos for download. and stories you may never find on mainstream media. so. the political. posts aren't just say.
10:31 pm
hey guys welcome to shell and tell me i'm going to show what part of our guests have to say on the topic now i want to hear our audience just go on to this video on our twitter for part of the questions that we post on you tube every monday and on thursday the show long responses we like your voice are. all right it's time for tonight's tool time award and it goes to newt gingrich his apology tour with the g.o.p. continues after he trashed the paul ryan medicare plan nearly two weeks ago it probably remember when newt's gaffe was on meet the press. i don't think right wing social engineering is any more desirable than left wing social and i don't think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for free society. i think we need
10:32 pm
a national conversation you have to a better medicare system with more choices for seniors. now if you're making that same other g.o.p. paypal went absolutely crazy on you that pundits and t.v. host said he with unelectable i've heard chanting attacking the g.o.p. plan to phase out medicare with a voucher program and just days after making that black so a statement on meet the press you traveled i worked for the first time since announcing that he was running for president and one voter showed his disgust for news all the t.v. cameras are rolling. very interesting. for your future you underscoring the snow ice and. snow i'm sure there are some horror stories where if you know we're going to go big or a fool of yourself. ouch call the four and embarrassed on national t.v. now first the former speaker of the house who has a habit of self-destruction took a hard line with not apologized for his comments he said he was misquoted and then
10:33 pm
he tried to blame the issue on the liberal media if you're construed if you were straight got your press tour of america we're out of context i want to assure that my message to contribute to be very careful and have it right away i'm going down people's throats. but the thing is new spin didn't work they just kept the story alive on right wing talk radio and on fox news the newt finally admitted he was wrong and he begged for forgiveness for forgiveness from the scorned republican establishment because i want to set a precedent for a new kind of presidential campaigns and i thank bill bennett former frankly for helping me walk through what people were hearing which is not what i intended to say i made a mistake and i called paul ryan today was a very close personal friend and i said that. now while newt has apologized not everybody out there is buying it a large number of campaign donors dropped him after the meet the press comment so
10:34 pm
now newt's trying to stay afloat and on thursday his two thousand and twelve campaign sent out an e-mail asking for donations to help keep the conversation going when it comes to cutting entitlements so basically if you donate a new campaign together you can save the paul ryan plan who's not going to save it from himself this sad politician left over from the ninety's is turned out to be a joke and in two weeks this poll numbers have completely collapsed and now it's forced to beg for money to save a program that he called right wing social engineering and that's why newt gingrich is tonight's top time winner. and cell phone users listen up because your phone is probably going to be bugged by the government yet believe it or not the f.c.c. says that all cell phones will be required to carry a chip by two thousand and twelve and it's for the purpose of safety that a way for the government to reach you directly but we wonder are these new measures there really to keep you safe or simply to keep you scared archy's marina portnoy
10:35 pm
has more of. the country that created blackberries and gave birth to i phones. has more than three hundred million wireless users and in the name of national security the u.s. government will soon have a direct link to each and every handheld device it's like he's going to stay here for a reason but we hope to have the troops gathered at the scene of the september eleventh terrorist attacks federal in new york city officials join the c.e.o.'s of the four largest wireless carriers to announce the nation's new tech tools and alert system enabling the president and government agencies to blast every american with text messages warning of terror threats weather disasters and kidnappings the cell phone alert system will launch in new york city and washington d.c. by. the end of this year expanding nationwide they are after wireless users may
10:36 pm
have the option of not receiving certain alerts though americans will not be able to opt out of its messages sent by the u.s. president opponents say politicians are promoting more fear while providing little protection now we have a system of mandatory and inescapable alerts through every cell phone in the land in the event that the government decides that something is happening that we ought to know about now just as the introduction of the patriot act came right after nine eleven so this new kind of technological invasion comes to us without any public discussion right after the assassination of osama bin laden and why you professor and author mark crispin miller says americans are living in an age of creeping authoritarianism and scare tactics they use fear for any kind of government that craves more control over people's lives and thoughts is that it
10:37 pm
makes people malleable it makes them obedient i mean you go to any airport today and you can see this in action people are meekly taking off their shoes moving to getting groped under the auspices of airport safety babies senior citizens and everyone in between must now endure pat downs or pass through body scanners before boarding in the case of muslim americans that may not be enough sixty's following the killing of osama bin ladin for him mom's on two separate u.s. flights were illegally kicked off planes for looking suspicious and you have a few hate mongers who the who can can can you evoke the motions you know enough what people do they play on people's emotional good play on people's ignorance about islam and muslims you see and also this war is creating a climate of fear and you see if you see something suspicious in the parking lot or in the store. say something immediately in december the department of homeland security began encouraging americans to report suspicious activity to the country's
10:38 pm
largest food retailer while marched partnership with washington has been accused of perpetrating a climate of panic and subsequent need for more surveillance you need to create an enemy for people to rally behind and loose wars and the fact that we're spending over fifty percent of our taxes on war and our national defense but there's really no threat directly to this country and they need to keep this following the assassination of enemy number one and american lawmaker called for an increase in rail safety funding and the creation of a no ride list as u.s. officials warn of more terror threats following bin laden's death many americans remain concerned others are left wondering about the dangers for seeking too much liberty for security. or archie new york. is college worth it that's the question that many americans are asking themselves as more and more graduates find themselves unable to get
10:39 pm
a job and saddled with that in fact is sixty five percent of americans have student loan debt and the average college student least school owing twenty four thousand dollars according to a report by the new york times student loan debt is expected to reach one trillion dollars this year even surpassing the credit card debt epidemic in america so what's a student to do well peter thiel the co-founder of pay pal things that they should stop wasting their time and dropout these are the two million dollar fund they give students who drop out one hundred thousand dollars and work on projects that could be breakthroughs in technology and science but which option carries more risk joining me from our studio in new york to discuss this is attorney good night the live in founder of the in law for i'm going to thank you so much for joining us tonight so for starters i want to hear from you do you think college is worth it these days. well a fall is an inverse and i was looking at a college education as a based on return on my money not today i don't think it's a good investment but what if our if you look at the unemployment numbers i mean
10:40 pm
after all they're much lower for those who have a college degree they're at around four percent versus those who only have a high school degree who is unemployment has around ten percent. well even being so what is a person to do it coming out of school today this year or next year if somebody comes out with an average of twenty five to thirty thousand dollars of student loans the wages and the economy are not allowing for the income to be produced that's necessary to pay those loans back i mean sometimes that what we're thinking about currently is inflation going to go higher than what we can afford is that going to help us avoid pain or student loans in future now some people out there are speculating that a college education that's the next bubble that's going to burst because people are going to realize that it's not worth it and they're going to stop sending their kids to school but do you think that's true even if you like this is something that's been so ingrained in our culture and something that your time since
10:41 pm
childhood is that you you go to school and you go to college and that's the path in life. well society demands that corporate america requires that we know that if we want our children to have a good future and a successful one and we have to send them to school the question is however are people more successful because of the education they receive over the over the four years or is it because they're four years old that's something that can be argued on both ends so i don't really know what the exact answer would be all right so are you going to send your kids to college. absolutely look at the end of the day we know that education is going to help or kids it's going to everyone around their children as well but if we're looking from a perspective as dollars and cents right now the investment in school is a bad one we don't know if we're going to get
10:42 pm
a return on our money because we don't know what the schools are going to prepare us for and what the economy is going to allow us to bring in as far as income right now it's difficult to actually gauge of those a good investment so then what would you recommend that people do i mean i'm curious what do you think of this idea. where he set up a fund for two million dollars he's actually encouraging people to drop out of school and is willing to hand over one hundred thousand dollars for them to you know invest to innovate to come up with breakthroughs in technologies that really a good idea to encourage people to drop out. well first of all i want to mention there is most likely a little torn out of a motive there. let's say somebody comes to him and brings a great idea and he gives them one hundred dollars to one of us at the end of the day that's going to be his to use so the motive there is no it's a be a bring me an idea whether you're in college or out of college those are moderates for me i'm looking for new bright ideas and i'm willing to pay one hundred thousand
10:43 pm
dollars for the next breakthrough is that a good thing to motivate kids to drop out of school absolutely not i would recommend look for state institutions don't pay the high tuition if you can go to a state local school go forward it's going to be a lot cheaper as long as you get your education you're going to be well prepared i'm wondering when we look at silicon valley you look at some of these tech giants you look at people like mark zuckerberg do you think that they're giving young people all the wrong impression that you know it's really easy to just drop out of school and to the starkest tech firm that you never know might become one of the one of the biggest companies in the entire world i mean there's such an emphasis these days i fail on engineering and sciences and technology in school because that really is the next frontier but how do you warn people adequately that not everybody's going to be the next mark zuckerberg. look the motivation is there come up with your bright ideas don't limit yourself always come to see your parents or
10:44 pm
teachers with some bright ideas you never know what's going to happen so that you never want to limit yourself you know want to motivate your kids in the wrong direction but currently the education is just necessary society demands of corporate america silicon valley they demanded so it's like hitting the lottery circle berg essential leave that hit the lottery many of the innovators hit the lottery because they were at the right place at the right time and they had the images clear essentially you do need that education long term because you never know what that the company is going to do in a year so corporate america demands you get an education i guess it sounds like corporate america demands that you be and it's definitely a tough situation out there are going to take you so much for joining us tonight. thank you for our reward. and also to come on this friday night night fireside friday and then we have happy hour elastic compiles in your book photos of
10:45 pm
potential g.o.p. candidates and they're pretty good and i did appears that some people don't realize that the onion news network isn't actually the real news stick around for that and much more interesting. let's not forget that we live in a hard part of the leg. doesn't block. one well. we're never going to the says he's heard you say get ready for freedom. hey guys welcome to showers hell on the on a show we've heard of are just stuff to say on the topic now i want to hear our
10:46 pm
audience just go on to you tube video response or to twitter for thought of the question that we post on you tube every monday and on thursday the show longer sponsors during the week long what's a. few of the. first. few weeks. you know some judges do a story and see. you think you understand it and then you know here's the part of it and realize that everything is or you don't i'm sorry.
10:47 pm
it's a nice buy you start with your home. this week gore elected officials gave away your rights and i'm talking about their reauthorization of the patriot act for four more years i told you this was coming as specially after the announcement last week that john boehner and harry reid i decided to extend three controversial provisions with quote a little debate as possible and they almost have their way and back at the end it came down to only one senator from kentucky rand paul who tried to give your civil liberties a voice and you know what paul got for trying to ask for a debate trying to remind his fellow lawmakers of this is a democracy that we have
10:48 pm
a constitution with fundamental values that protect its citizens instilled in it was painted by some pundits as a lunatic but worst of all harry reid he was the unpatriotic you want to help terrorists are going he said by asking for a simple debate on this issue rand paul would quote increase the risk of a retaliatory terrorist strike against the homeland and hamper our ability to deal a truly fatal blow to al qaeda you know harry if the patriot act hasn't dealt a fatal blow to al qaeda in the ten years that it's already been around yet i've got a feeling that's not going to accomplish that goal now either but i think and i guess yesterday julian sanchez said it that harry reid is more of curried of a debate than terrorism although. all of them are saying spineless politicians would rather not ask any questions at least of all the force answering they'd rather keep everyone scared keep the wars going keep on grooving the budgets for those wars keep up proving measures that have stripped their constituents of their
10:49 pm
constitutional protections because it's easier to do he can scare and shut them up and if anyone dares raise their voice just label him a terrorist lover or in breach the same way for the government gets away with keeping us in the dark about what information they're collecting and about who will label it a state secret that it strictly linked to our national security which takes priority above all it's more important to me and my rights it's more important than you and yours do you really think that any other type of legislation would be allowed to be adduced signed by the president while he's in france just in time for the midnight deadline and the auto pen i wasn't even by nick no first they considered spending god knows how much money to fly it to do it i feel like this is reach a point of complete lunacy you can quit reading science fiction novels because we're in one step or there's no last page here there's no existential question that you asked at the end before you close the book and move on with your life this
10:50 pm
warmongering surveillance state that has no regard for anyone or anything but power . is real. ok if you ride a right before a long weekend though it's a nice happy hour is a really happy hour and joining me tonight is politico's david guetta needs an r t correspondent lauren lifter thinks we're going to die. so we were going i mean we were going to new you do more news than i do i do an opinion show but i think it's fair to say most people out there know that the onion isn't news at all the onion is totally fake news and you would hope that people know that especially if you watch certain clips like this one. let's go now to the case the whole nation is
10:51 pm
watching the military trial of m q one military drone to your four to five for less than ten was tragic bombing of an afghan wedding after nearly a month of various testimony a t r forty five itself will finally take the stand today to answer for the bombings which killed more than three hundred afghan civilians and stirred widespread outrage across the globe. oh it's so sad but that's true these days nobody's ever going to get charged for killing somebody by pushing a button on and on but the point is that there are people out there that really do think that you know is real and somebody went through and compiled off of people's facebook profiles the news stories that they linked to and what they said so here were some of our favorites first of all people really believe that the harry potter ending is now split into seven new movies which i would return which. i mean how many are part of movies have there been going to make it or not and they had put their money where how many books are there there's like six or seven books right when they make more movies and the franchise they make
10:52 pm
a lot of money the people that are in harry potter you know for a day would you know they would want and they would believe well that's the thing is you get really excited about is that some of the political will so when we look at it they thought oh yes i see this kharaj someone's heart but that isn't actually true what other one of people really thought was real and obama makes it through another day to resist the urge to release all of us nuclear weapons at one point to launch them one yeah like send them off and even started commenting on that one being like oh there's the nobel peace prize winner for you right i would think that like the tea party and some of his critics would say they wouldn't believe it because they would say you know he would never be strong enough to carry weapons out one he's a way to be true when you know i was. ok this one though is by far the best we have make of bases all over the world that nobody cares about but this one got people really riled up planned parenthood eight billion dollar abortion. and.
10:53 pm
abortion like abortion abortion i don't know what are you protesting the couple over this right now and you people actually think it's true you know they're always there are really really no other voices like one cobol did you see the comment above it was so sad what is this country. on the face book like the common. that's country's going to do when people can't discern like. bad stuff well at least if they're watching a drone story they probably have a better sense they actually drones are attacking other countries they're people that read a lot of the mainstream media that's true but you know they're not really the only reason the headline are they getting past the first time he's listening to something with a one more harry potter so they're going to write i would read the words you starting to say we i think of people as prime words and kind of people if they're reading your news article versus watching one of their videos because the videos are just so so in your face so. so obvious let's move on to some of your book
10:54 pm
photos that the atlantic actually put together the potential g.o.p. twenty twelve candidates and some of them are pretty good we're going to start off with mitt romney who i know he was kind of looks like romney more money when they were saying well we're previewing what. he was in the glee club you know he said a lot of activities but i think he got it right for them a second that i went totally looks like that romney is over once i don't think ok sarah pail and she's up next. and you know i knew she was supposed to be a beauty queen and that's what i our fair for me was so two were mean or saying trouble each other i just don't think that looks like i disagree because it's a very attractive photo of her because i just don't think that she looked all that attractive when she was younger apparently looks attractive woman like thirteen you know life's going to be way through it and i picture it would be like they would be disgusted i'm pretty sure i looked horrible and it carol people are going to take that and i wonder are they well tim paul and see oh yeah. tony danza with
10:55 pm
a line simple and he was kind of attractive on that one jon huntsman i really love his hair. i'm. looking back you know like as wide as it is long it's just see i wish i could go to china with that when i was he probably was he was a rock. what about when you don't log in and. drive that i get a right sorry i think that he was fine but michelle cottle do you go she she looks way less ghostly. close like her and she looks pretty i guess that's like six or three maybe she was right and she was a cheerleader they also had a picture of my head and you're going to a herman cain or almost down here. people you totally are more of the same the best all around guy you know i thought was most likely to succeed both he was voted but there is. a president who can raise a hand like more and everybody knew in high school and you succeed what you probably already looks very much like like the ron paul they just really came out
10:56 pm
ok and some voted best all around right people like to you don't like them says yeah but i kind of scares me but ron paul and herman cain herman cain also is a total you know as long as says he time so there's really no you can put on a good day all around by i don't last one we have a newt gingrich. and you would you know i so glasses are would be very in style today about how he would be absurd a day and voted mostly intellectuality just like she had issues happening with a newspaper in his hand so people don't carry is what the controller is a lesson here is a life story we'll have a couple seconds but in new york officials are proposing that high school curriculum include lessons on what mothers can do if they give birth to a baby that they don't want and tell them a safe way to get rid of the baby. so sad but it's only when necessary and i don't think that's not i think that's really smart this actually how i'm saying a sad event or something that actually may have these a side and i would say if the teacher is the first person going to go on this that
10:57 pm
said like i mean why is that a family member or someone involved that you can turn to on this you're such an idealist why do you think these women are throwing away their babies because they totally dad they couldn't go to mom and dad if they are anywhere stanley there's a grandmother and aunt a family friend an adult outside instructed class that they can go through with this problem like this you know i don't. well you know right away their babies they feel like there's nowhere to go so this is this is instructive it's interesting to see how they don't know it's troubling them that there is a law that you can't abandon your baby somewhere you know it's certain safe havens and you won't be prosecuted because that's what they're worried about so they have all gone away absolutely don't put that idea that if you don't agree with why you can't be talk to me. from my side anyway i don't know you girls are pregnant guys i have to wrap it up unfortunately but a sad sad but true end of story and that's it for a nice job thanks for tuning in we'll be off on monday for morial day but make sure to come back on tuesday the government one step closer after a vote in the senate to having the power to blacklist piracy websites so we'll
10:58 pm
