in one thousand nine hundred five grover norquist founded americans for tax reform at the request of president ronald reagan they organized the taxpayer pretext fire protection pledge which simply asks all candidates for federal and state office to commit themselves in writing to oppose tax increases and this congress two hundred thirty seven house members and forty one senators have taken that pledge and when i was a congressional candidate i signed the pledge and was even a invited to attend one of grover's infamous wednesday morning breakfast as a candidate but as much as i try to avoid being mistaken for a serious journalist i guess as part of the the media i'm no longer welcome but his weekly wednesday morning meetings bring together the best minds of the conservative movement takes place off the record at the americans for tax reform conference room right here in washington d.c. he serves on the board of directors of the n.r.a.

didn't get a chance to me then i tried i was i was getting worried i was afraid that you were like a figment of everybody's imagination you were just too stupid our fall to be real you're impact was too much and it's an honor to have you in studio tonight and to get to meet from person to lead to be on your show so tell us about the leave us alone coalition this is this is this is really exciting the way that you've captured it here a shirt when people tried to explain sort of the reagan republican conservative movement they used to say three legs economic conservatives social conservatives foreign policy conservatives. told you a little bit during the cold war what's that what's a foreign policy conservative today they have other principles is it somebody who wants to occupy iraq or somebody who said reagan wouldn't have done that and then a different approach is what i think is a better way to understand and more nuanced and better predictive in terms of understanding what the movement will do is to think of it is a group of people sitting around a table everybody who votes as

a reagan republican right conservative. is there on their vote moving issue and on their vote moving issue but they want from the government is to be left alone that's how you find a vote moving this what you find out what moves their issue i mean there's some people i serve on the board the national rifle association their vote weaving issue is the second amendment the single issue gun single how they are affecting everybody at the end of the dead single issue voter because candidates have many existed at some point one issue is what kicks in over what is a. second amendment a lot of people vote on guns of homeschoolers about two percent of population biggest issue for them is being able to educate their children at home and a lot of people it's taxpayers as tax very low taxes and there's also people that have a lot of other people who for whom most of the things like this are deal breaker issues first and you can't but at the end of the day it's just a lot of people around the table may be there for three or four reasons but some are only there for one reason some people want to be left alone in their

professional lives and businessman women professionals who don't want to be regulated or taxed out of existence all the various communities of faith people from the most important thing in their life is practicing their faith and raising their kids so that they're all they want to be left alone there's one thing you left out he said money guns lives what about pot smoking conservatives well i think there are a lot of people who would like to be left alone in that zone and right now that has not because of the two party system and it up there's not a voting bloc yet there you see it initiatives there's some issues that can pass as initiatives like no racial preferences passed this initiative in california russian state michigan way before elected officials would touch it with a ten foot pole the taxpayer movement started as an initiative campaign not votes in congress but proposition thirteen in california so the twenty three states that can put something on the ballot like decriminalization of marijuana or. medical

marijuana those things have passed in various states with majorities but the legislators would were not comfortable doing that so some get some issues are not front and center yet. in campaigns but they're but they're pushed into the political agenda through the initial process all perhaps more so than the drug war and it seems like a lot of conservatives are start to realize having two million americans and jail making us the least free country on earth by an actual standard of measurement here for for drug offenses is not conserved matter how you cut it it's not a fiscal conservative approach the situation but on foreign policy too and this is something that you've been actively involved with very exciting to see because there is now a coalition building of people who believe in a true taft goldwater ron paul ronald reagan even conservative foreign policy that's we're not going to impose liberal big government on nations all over

the world tell us about that how's that come into play in the in the coalition that you're building well you certainly see it there a lot of people polling shows you that two thirds of american conservatives and tea partiers republicans think that everything that was done up until now in afghanistan was a good idea and we should do something dramatically different the future very interesting really what happened last week. and what i think you're seeing is people who don't want to dish the sacrifice that was made by soldiers today don't even want to second guess bush on the station to go and that's sad but ok that's sad we don't do something different let's bring him into the spring i would say let's build a whole that i think that that's an opening for conservatives to say. what are we doing what is winning look like and why are we doing that's one of the alternatives and then in the option with that afghanistan is clearly we don't need to be spending one hundred twenty billion dollars that's what we spent the last year and

twenty billion dollars to occupy a country whose g.d.p. is about four billion dollars i don't like that it sounds kind of silly doesn't it i don't know how you do that and we haven't exactly been making friends and the reason we were told that we had to be there was to make sure that al qaeda did not break in afghanistan turns out it was operating out of pakistan you. know i think a lot of you now have to invade pakistan but but the idea that holding territory in this kind of conflict makes it right of sense is look i'm all i've done is asked some questions and a lot of people go you know a lot of us question and that was the problem during eight years of bush a lot of republicans conservatives libertarians thought well that's a republican in office where yeah and of course you know it seems now a lot of conservatives are realizing that the fourth also we have now really amounts to a welfare program for the military industrial complex all right this just we just have a second one tell us what is the pledge to the taxpayers protection pleasure and you know how is it achieved through the relevancy that it has to taxpayer

protection pledge is a very simple written couple of sentences i wish taxes no net tax increase congressman senators presidents governors state legislators sign the pledge versions for all the different offices yeah yeah because the federal slightly different state and governors and president's promise to oppose veto as opposed to oppose and go to against and what we've done is made it easy for elected officials to communicate to their voters and say i have signed the pledge but if a politician got up and said i don't want to raise taxes. what did he what did he just say did he really green live snow to attack it is promise not to raise taxes or do you say rather like taxes i'd rather not raise taxes all right not exactly a commitment the pledge is a written commitment same wording used in all fifty states and thousands of campaigns and that makes the commitment more real easier to enforce i'll stand with

a recap of an event that the oath keepers hosted this past weekend on memorial day to celebrate the life and mark the tragic death of was a fellow veteran of both iraq and afghanistan who was killed by a swat team serving a no knock warrant on his home for what they said was a drug conspiracy charge turned out there were no drugs discovered in the house but when the door was broken down because they were new was standing there at something or rather simply being ready to defend himself with his own rifle the swat team immediately opened fire firing seventy one rounds of the first report that came out from the police department of this very disturbing yeah yeah it was really anybody he said one thing to say he's a marine also he was a marine and the first report said that his the seals of the swat team members were riddled with bullet holes before before they they they had to say no he didn't

fire a shot his gun was on safe and safe the entire time it's is it the outrage that comes out of the jury just kept kurten you and you only really get the b.s. believe anything they say he has that was coming. one of the p.r. people that put this together was ninety minutes i mean they're doing so we've c.b.s. like this was the crap we were fed about the iraq war so ok the government just keep feeding us more and more garbage you would think you would think the police force isn't sort of a nonstop campaign mode or something the amount that they lie anyways stuart do we have you are stewart if you could tell us a little bit about the event that you posted this weekend and how it went from the oath keepers here through there yesterday and we rallied about a mile from the home and it was our freedom under told people most of them veterans but quite a few of them were also hearing it out in the burbs and friends and we marched to
