free. free. download free blog. for your. free media card teach dot com. back on the low nischelle where i'll get the real headlines with none of them are state are going to live in washington d.c. now normally at this point of the show i outline our headlines for you and we get the whole thing rolling but we're doing things differently now on for those of you who watch the show on a regular basis i think you're already well aware of why you watch us versus the other guys and i'm talking about the mainstream media i mean three media that always manages to miss the real story now for those of you who may be new let me just take a moment to remind you of that drivel that you see everywhere else away or corporate
6:01 pm
owned media chooses to spend their time and their money on and the last few days it all started with this. and. the british that they were going to be taking away our arms by reading the bill that me and making sure is he's right he is forced to choose to send those shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free. that's right sarah palin said something that's historically and factually inaccurate as usual and the mainstream media has a literally been falling all over itself to analyze the slip up from every single angle possible sarah palin has a right to think whatever she thinks i mean she is not a candidate for president yet she has a right to say whatever she wants however she should be held accountable for that and i think that's what we're doing even as we speak i'll just leave it at that it is ok it's all about you know the state kerry she was out over there which i could be a chuckle well there's a list. you know i think that speaks for gradations right anything else i remember
6:02 pm
steve schmidt who ran the campaign for john mccain saying after meeting with her and listening to her saying she doesn't know anything and by the way one of my lane to boise was the signals he was giving about where the british were coming everybody knows that how damaging is this latest mr human rights not helpful for her though the first when she made the gaffe i don't think it was all that serious she was i think it looked like she was putting some food items on a tray and she was sort of thinking out loud but it does show the peril and sort of answering questions off the cuff really and now listen i'm all for making fun of politicians calling about any make stupid statements especially when there is malady as mislabel herself we make fun of it we get a laugh and then we move on we move on to talk about unemployment talk about the housing crisis the death of the middle class the corporate dominance and ownership of this country and of our lawmakers and the constant endless wars at the military industrial complex and it chills your corporate media they're much more interested
6:03 pm
in the throngs of people that make to manage through a storm or a courtroom just to get a glimpse of casey anthony the would think it's a circumstantial case there's no videotape of this murder so what they've done is they've battered her face put all those jailhouse interviews of people see what a liar she is that she was out partying for thirty days after the child went missing the fact that the defense or the defendant was able to have the body hidden for so long that the flesh of the could indicate and there's only skeletal remains should not unearth her benefit there's no question this was a homicide look we've got a two year old she didn't commit suicide and this is. why people are so fascinated with the story of a young woman that may have killed her child it's a mystery to me but you know what there is a market for that and it's called a daytime talk show not a channel that focuses on news or politics the real troubles plaguing the entire country don't you think that americans would care a little bit more about the trillions of dollars being so. and the thousands of
6:04 pm
lives being lost in afghanistan and iraq if only their media that you know we constantly hear that critique americans are too far removed from our wars and that's why they don't protest more that's why we don't hear more calls for these wars to stop but you know why they were moved because the media doesn't cover that so let's talk about a bit of the real stories that we saw today and over the weekend the fence secretary robert gates while in afghanistan on his farewell tour warned against withdrawing too many troops too soon. for my money the question is. if it were up to me i'd leave the shooters to last i have confidence that will strike the right balance and it's really it's really so much about where you start but what the next year and a half to two years looks like and i think we have to look at it strategically like that and not just focus on the front end of this yeah whatever number gets in the house. now the new york times is reporting today that the obama administration is
6:05 pm
a looking at a steeper troop drawdown than originally planned all thanks in part to the killing of osama bin laden but you know what that means free media took from that in their two minutes dedicated to covering it this morning but there is infighting within the obama administration chuck todd was beside himself with joy to talk about more beltway he said she's that and you know what we talked about the fact that this is america's longest war that we're losing it the thousands of service members of died and yet we still have no idea who the key players are within the taliban and the more civilians have died in the last ten years of occupation the under taliban rule how about the fact that we can't afford this war anymore and that the majority of americans don't think it's worth fighting and i guess that would be digging just a little bit wouldn't. now how about the fact that five u.s. soldiers were killed in a rocket attack in central iraq during the media mention that to they call the single biggest incident involving u.s. soldiers since may of two thousand and nine which is true and then they moved on to
6:06 pm
asking why we still have troops there to begin with even though our combat mission there supposedly ended last september oh that's right because that war still isn't over because we still have fifty thousand troops there and robert gates is hoping that iraq is going to ask them to say past the end of this year how about the fact that there aren't even any pictures from this attack today because every news outlet has abandoned the area there just a smattering of reporters left in iraq because everybody seems to have forgotten about it those are the headlines those are the stories and the questions that you don't get from the mainstream media that's what they miss and that's why you come here. now we often talk about the disconnect between the d.c. political elites and the rest of the country and a new rasmussen poll is a glaring example of that currently sixty six percent of voters say that the country is headed down the wrong direction and that's no small number but then when you divide that by who the voters are that's all the difference is really in your face amongst political class of voters sixty one percent think the country is
6:07 pm
headed in the right direction but if you ask mainstream voters people like you well they disagree seventy eight percent of them disagree so a majority of those that are in charge of legislating on key issues think that things are just peachy keen and they really surprise you anymore that wall street gets off scot free all the rest of us are martin foreclosures and unemployment joining me to discuss this from our studio in new york is david rosen author and alter net contributor david thank you so much for joining us tonight for starters and we look at these polls that come from rasmussen and they say the political class who are they referring to specifically. well i don't think they're referring to me i think they're referring to you because you seem very up on the issues of the day which is very exceptional in the united states. but if i'm as making a slight joke there i apologize you know there's people who take news very seriously and ask difficult questions and don't have simple answers but that
6:08 pm
doesn't seem to make any sense right people like myself if i am constantly following the news and if i really know what's going on in the country then why would i think that things are just fine why would it be quite a sixty one percent of people like myself think that we're headed in the right direction because i don't feel that way. no i think that's the disconnect that you're pointing out i mean i think most people feel that the. the forces that govern this country have far more authority than they do so that the political class sees things i believe if i understand what rasmussen means by the political class has educated active citizens who take voting and the political process seriously they actually see things more historical contexts what i think again but rasmussen is employing with them they don't really define these questions is that the other people who look upon things for more pessimistically are people who are
6:09 pm
living in the pay day they're overwhelmed by reality they feel you know scared to death by the structural realignment that this country is in the midst of and that's where we're watching so if your are part of what they call the political class i think you take a step back you don't see the short term you see in the bigger picture and you are you know in that sense i think you look at mr obama and what the democrats are attempting to do and you couldn't say against the context of what someone like roosevelt did you know fifty seventy years ago in which america faced a comparable kind of crisis of this magnitude we haven't done this before america has since said. the great depression have gone through a period smaller fiscal crisis is in which you know we've been able to recover in a fairly comfortable way that gave people a sense of optimism in a sense of hope we're witnessing today and this is what i believe is a structural realignment of the economic nature of this country work people are
6:10 pm
fearful of is the fact that they're going to be at the short end of the stick most people and you see this most clearly articulated by people in the tea party movement are scared to death they know that the traditional privileges that went to them are disappearing but they have very little control over the sort of the future of the economy of this country there's no big future in most people's eyes there's just holding on to what you heard of and hoping for the best so i mean i think that's the disconnect that you should go forward with these two different segments and their perceptions what do you think people are supposed to do you mentioned that the tea party could be an example of people actually showing that fear and bringing that fear out into their protest into political action why don't we see more of that let's say from the left side from the progressive side even the tea party you could say has has totally fallen off the bandwagon when it comes to some of the original the initial anger that really started the movement when it comes to the anger over the the wall street bailouts and the fact that the bankers are
6:11 pm
getting off scot free and there has been no justice no peace people actually live above the law they have laws of their own. well i agree with you i think in fact we saw the beginnings of this kind of if you will a progressive response for what happened in madison and some other. state capitals a couple months ago i think the tea party people have hit the wall because they realize that the politics that they were promised as most clearly articulated by paul ryan sort of. that. are about you care proposals are really aimed at them directly and they're sort of waking up to the fact that they don't have answers and no one really has an answer and the sad state of course is that the democrats don't have an answer either they have no long term structural play into how to read and reinvigorate this country without a massive commitment of resources which the political system both republicans and
6:12 pm
most congressional democrats are opposed to it's a slow and very trying period for the next decade or so and people really i think in their heart of hearts know that the way i usually try to define this as i say the american century is over what that grand talk a moment which was really exceptional american history that followed the second world war and sort of it came to its eclipse with the oil crisis in the mid seventy's was a great moment for americans and the people who are in the tea party movement are really beneficiaries of that process and they're potentially their children but for sure not their grandchildren who don't know what to do with it and so that's what we're really stuck in fact you know again it's i thought i don't know what's going to come i mean i'm not a. reader but i see a structural crisis here in which no one really wants to address especially the political leadership in this country they want to get through to two thousand and twelve and unless obama completely screws up and the democrats you know they will
6:13 pm
get reelected i mean i think we see the second rate tier of candidates the republicans is testimony to the fact that there's that they have basically the most . republicans the established republicans have given up on too often they're going to look at the problem models through sitting there probably sixteen and the things will settle down a bit it will be much more like business as usual with a different political and social reality economic reality for most people and then they then this game will start again for real they have i think you hit it on the nose there david when you say that everyone's worried about the next election two thousand and twelve or twenty sixteen when it comes to these election cycles and that's why we can't make any long term plans and i think that's why people are so pessimistic about it because they realize the political system doesn't actually you know make use of any of that or plan for that thank you so much for joining us tonight well thank you very much for having me appreciate it. now coming up next a low fat place is hackers or is this a side or a group with
6:14 pm
a political purpose we're going to give you some background information on these guys and why you should keep a close eye on that and then our travelers having their rights stripped from them we'll bring you some shocking statistics that's the number of people who have had their electronic devices that seized during border checks i'll speak with david house friend of bradley manning who's also filed a lawsuit against the jets were traveling for that purpose back after the break. into that only one military mechanisms if you don't work to bring justice or. i have every right to know what my government should do if you want to know why i pay taxes. but i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes just a story that seems so silly you think you understand it and then you did something
6:15 pm
else here's some other part of it and realized everything you saw. i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right. i think the. one well. we have the government says they're going to keep things safe get ready for freedom .
6:16 pm
for fifty. five. now during past shows we've told you about and even spoken about years of the hacktivist group anonymous they responsible for hacking pay paul and master card after those organizations cut ties with wiki leaks amongst a few other notable hacks in the cyber world like the gary email hack but now there's a new group to keep your eye on i called. it short for security and this group
6:17 pm
might be to you but they're already out to prove that they're force to be reckoned with their logo is a combination of the reach peace and a monopoly guy but on their website they seem to try to portray themselves as a bit of a playful group this quote can be found on their page considering that fun is now restricted to friday where we look forward to the weekend weekend we have now taken upon ourselves to spread fun fun fun throughout the entire calendar year and of course the term comes from the internet with a do play on the original online slang for laugh out loud or l.o.l. as of now there doesn't really seem to be any one person in charge and they're very loosely coordinated meaning that nobody really knows how many people might be affiliated with them and we first told you about this group of hackers after they came out against p.b.s. documentary about wiki leaks and bradley manning they have p.b.s. is web page and change the front page to a false story about two blocks being alive in new zealand but here's a little more background on this group are pretty new they've only been performing notable hacks since may and one of their first acts which put them on the map was
6:18 pm
when they have to obtain information on contestants of the show x. factor complete with names and phone numbers and email addresses which of course they then reposed for all the public to see but it also bypassed cyber security for other big companies also made a pass of the already battered sony tapping at three of their websites for once again leaving all of their consumer data on cricket they also have nintendo's website but it didn't actually affect any user data and the group says it was just a warmup for their bigger hit at the affiliated sites the group's in for a garden unveil its were hit by loss last friday in for garden bed. and so are private firms that concentrate on quote fake hacking government sites to let them know how secure their government information is in the cyber world obviously if these companies can so easily be hacked and finally say too much for how well they can protect the government's data does it so any information that little security found on these firms databases that have ties to the f.b.i. were then hacked with the following press release from laws admitting what they did
6:19 pm
they said while they're not very many logons that we'd like to take time to find out all of that are affiliated with the f.b.i. in some way most of them reduce their passwords in other places which is heavily frowned upon in the f.b.i. in for guard handbook and generally everywhere else too so what we have got to learn how detrimental this act is let's also point out to you the three classifications for hackers you've got the white house there are groups dedicated to hacking sites to inform the sites about any flaws or loopholes in their systems and there's the black hats those are the malicious hackers and finally they are the gray had sued don't really find the category when it comes to the intent of their hacking capabilities and i think that's where the group will security currently lays oh they're so young they've proven that they can take on the best of the best and they want to make themselves known to everyone including the f.b.i. so i personally like the extended offered i'm very curious about your motives what drives organization so if you'd like to have your voice heard you're welcome to share your message here on the alone or show. now it's
6:20 pm
a growing trend travelers having their laptops and other electronic devices searched and seized all crossing the border back in the united states the constitution project has even put together some numbers and according to their figures from october first two thousand and eight through june second two thousand and ten more than sixty five hundred people had their electronic devices searching crossing international border nearly half of those are u.s. citizens and two thousand and nine customs and border protection ran at two thousand two hundred and four searches of digital media including laptops and one hundred five individuals were detained without authorities citing any grounds for reasonable suspicion that one person who's been a victim of that treatment is computer scientists and activists from the bradley manning support network david house just weeks ago he fathered lawsuit against the department of justice for violating his first and fourth amendment rights by seizing his laptop when he was passing through security at chicago's o'hare international airport they not only kept his belongings for forty nine days they
6:21 pm
also interrogated him about his associations with magic so joining me to discuss this give us details on how the lawsuit is going is david house david thanks so much for joining us tonight now for starters can you give us some more details about that incident at the o'hare airport that really you know led you to file a lawsuit yeah of course it was a really bizarre circumstance i was coming back in from mexico but a vacation with my girlfriend and you know to really expect to have your computer electronics east from you so going to the airport i think including normally you got to customs went through the line and all the sudden we were approached by two individuals who said they were from the department of homeland security and these individuals and for me i was compelled to surrender my electronic devices through doing so they took me to a back room and they interrogated me about my associations with a problematic support network i should know the support network is a legal advocacy organization based in the states it is nothing illegal it has no affiliations with we could be true it is a sham and they seized my computer and i think
6:22 pm
a. oh you believe as well in order to clean the information of activists that had donated or supported this legal advocacy campaign well that's one of the things as you say that you know you go through the airport you're going back in a trip you don't necessarily expect somebody to look for all of your information but it's something that's happening more and more often if you look at some of the numbers but i just outlined and it seems like the government really has taken advantage of the fact that they don't need a warrant when you're on the border that's one of their rights because supposedly that's how you keep bad people out of the country so what are you actually filing suit against do you think that you have a chance of winning. well certainly it's important to note that the u.s. government has not been legislated any authority to claim devices the border they have kind of claim this is already on the road they said right we're the government and we can take it up the border there's very little legal precedent for this and we hope this case will outline of the u.s. government should actually obtain a warrant before seizing any devices from any person travel across the border now
6:23 pm
the border experts exception to the fourth minute has been stated to be used in order to protect national defense but i had a hard time believing that anything on my computer or listed artist on my chat contacts are somehow detrimental to national defense so if u.s. government wants to seize a lot of activists in the future seize cameras from part of progress or seize notes from journalists they need to get a warrant first as has been done since the inception of this country but there are these days of course we hear national defense or national security being used as an excuse to go after a lot of people but i think you mention activists you mentioned journalists if it is i'd say a terrorist organization do you think of the government should have the right to then seize that information without a warrant. oh that's a terrorist organization hopefully the u.s. government has the capacity to investigate this organization and then to get a warrant from the courts as is required by due process of law when we start degrading due process of law when we start claiming these no you'll see exceptions there's really no into it and i don't want to live in
6:24 pm
a country where my belongings can be seized without a warrant any time place now it's important to note the u.s. government has claimed that fifty miles inside each border is actually a constitution freezone in which they can execute search and seizure for national defense this means that right now it's sitting in my home in cambridge massachusetts agents could walk in the door and seize my belongs here as well if we let it go far because you know start to it and the a.c.l.u. is putting a firm stance out right now and i'm supporting him another fifteen miles from each corner yeah there's a lot of people i know that would fall under that category coming from california now i know the a.c.l.u. is behind you i know there's also been separate letters written to the justice department by a number of former politicians you have academics as well even have you know ex military veterans has there been any response from the d.o.j. yet. no response whatsoever technically they have sixty days to respond before you want to the next step and they've been remarkably quiet i will say however that we filed several freedom of information act requests trying to figure out what database and then i keep getting stopped the border after the seizure and we found
6:25 pm
them in the government's tax database t.c.'s which is a treasury information database system used to track people say trouble abroad internationally now this database was used up in nine eleven to find us but the terrorists trying to fly back to saudi arabia so the question is why is a government using these databases designed to catch terrorists on legal advocates working in the states and i don't see a good reason for it if there was a good reason they would have taken warrants and in my mind this these exceptions have to be curbed now. well it's every very good question that you bring up there and of course as we know there's a grand jury being formed in order to try to build a criminal case against wiki leaks we know that bradley manning has been detained for over a year and there are a lot of questions surrounding that we've been constantly covering that on this show and so i want to ask you now pertaining to bradley manning recently bradley manning's father actually said that he thinks you were just using manning up for your own fifteen minutes of fame and he claims that manning actually told him that
6:26 pm
himself the what's your response to that i did stuff from the father and it was very alarming to me because through my last visit to many many bradley asking that i come back and he told me that he really enjoyed our conversations in my mind it was completely out of the blue the father's also said that he actually took me off with his attention list and he said that also claiming that bradley had told him of this mother authority and told him it to be honest it's hard really going to straight answer from the father what i can see is a human bradley did not how the relationship to speak of and the historical past between bradley manning in his father has kind of been whitewashed by assad or the press recently i don't know if you saw the interview in which is father said that his son if you committed the crimes he's alleged to commit is it i think idiot and the father also said that he sometimes denies knowing bradley manning when asked in public so the question is is this person really fit to be defending manning this individual who kicks him out of the house this individual who says he saw his idiot publicly i don't know if us troops but in my mind i'm just doing what i can to
6:27 pm
support manning and i'll keep doing that despite what a father son us now you've been a friend of bradley's you've been supporting him and i'm just curious as i said that they're building there is a grand jury going on in virginia we know there is a criminal case that's trying to build we know that people's twitter accounts have been. entered by the government to get their information have they contacted you have you had any kind of subpoena to go to virginia at all. i think i have had some recent contact from the u.s. government i have a meeting with my lawyers tomorrow and i'll be able to make a more robust statement after i get through that meeting with my lawyers so. there are some very big developments happening in and around boston hopefully later this week that work the media well actually i think that's interesting that you mention developments around boston because i also saw in recent interviews of yours that the state department actually tried to bribe you if you would keep an eye on the hacker scene can you tell us more about that very interesting actually soon as the wired article broke in which the limo and the whole situation was kind of laid out
6:28 pm
all these federal agents kind of descended on boston there was a state department there was the f.b.i. it was army cod and they started visiting the less frequently more contacts of manning trying to wideman and that included myself so they came to my house are we sitting in state apartments and i had an army security official look i mean the eye and say i will offer you a very large cash reward if you keep your to the ground about wiki leaks and a boston harbor scene and that was a point which i actually didn't want to leave because it's one thing for the u.s. government to come to my town and start harassing my friends and start poking around surveilling all of us and it's definitely another thing to try to turn us against each other and put it under surveillance i thought it committed no crime whatsoever i would stand for these topics and they were not shouting i don't think so lastly since you brought it up turning hackers are people against each other i just want to know what you thought of that p.b.s. documentary about we feel a sense for adrian lamo because they really made it seem like the guy was really
6:29 pm
struggle between what to do and whether one was the right thing or the wrong thing . well adrian almost kind of a nobody in this situation i mean he is a felon he's a government foreman thank you someone that we really should be giving airtime to his opinions don't really matter in all of this i would say that was a very interesting is that he tried to embroil the boston hacker scene into some kind of espionage charge minded by running one of the most past spin narratives that someone in boston who actually helped probably manning be talking to us and this is an obvious attempt in my mind to further put pressure on manning activists in boston and to it it gets him to intimidate people in boston are actually speaking up but bradley manning and i can tell you my friends were very alarmed after hearing and unsourced claim on p.b.s. frontline that we had somehow had something to do with the document leak and it's a very alarming and i don't know what he gets from i'm going to run these on source claims i'm very disappointed and their team i get it i thank you very much for joining us and i and you keep us updated on higher law.
