government welfare how do you get people to understand that. well you know i think a big part of the problem is just the media the media has reported it for years and we've had all subsidies that grown and grown and grown and just a month ago democrats in congress propose ending tax subsidies for some of the biggest oil companies actually some the smaller independent oil companies were exempted and you know the big five oil majors made thirty five billion in just the first quarter of this year so they don't need the subsidies which are billions of dollars that are borrowed from countries like china and you know there are you making record profits and it's doing nothing to reduce the price of the plant so you know i don't think see things changing but this is something that people need to remember when we talk about this debate i now want to get into your investigation he did about the koch brothers of course they're claiming that it's all obama's fault they're denying the idea that speculation might have anything to do with rising oil prices by they have their hands very very deeply entrenched in

this entire matter if you tell us more about their role and speculation yes fascinate you know a lot of you won't have heard of the koch brothers just in the last two years and i think of them as maybe an oil refining company because they live it own two large oil refineries or maybe a temper company has a timber company temper plants around the country but no one really understands that much of their multibillion dollar empire they're one of the largest private companies in the world and and the second largest in america. come from. the company operating very much like a hedge fund they're in an investor company and they hired a very different speculum strategy used to profit off the trading of oil since the eighty's they in fact invented a very worst oil derivative driven based on the price of oil and they helped lobby to create the first loophole that allows deregulated oil speculation in one thousand nine hundred three and they also wrote in for mr enron loophole i think

she called the coke loophole because to kogelo lobbyist along a route that helped write that that infamous loophole. that allowed these private exchanges these dark oil market exchange respect certain political after the year two thousand now we have we have ice we have a c.m.e. group we have the goldman sachs private exchange rate the morgan stanley one and these things are an almost taken over the global economy and that's why you see such high energy prices and actually booed and natural gas prices all over the world now we talk about we talk about the koch brothers talk about goldman sachs are there also the other big five well companies or it doesn't have to be five of the biggest oil companies in the world and in the us are they involved in the speculation as well. yeah that's the really interesting thing when you get into these these really big companies they start medical metamorph are out there sizing and changing you know where you have what companies that are acting like big banks where they're using their privileged position in the market to make speculative

bets on the price of oil in the short term in the long term and you have big banks acting like oil companies you have. a citi group bind up. pipelines buying up tankers even buying up their fire east just so they can get an edge on the speculative game it's fascinating to me and i think a lot of you will see these big brands like b.p. shell they think oh there's just no one company no that's not the case that we operate a lot like three. so if this is so in your face i mean just explain this to me right because the last month of course the obama administration decided to create an entire taskforce they said that they would investigate speculation to see if there's anything illegal going on to get to the bottom of while prices are so high gas prices are four dollars a gallon this seems pretty in your face why do you need a task force to investigate it or you know is it actually kind of blurry when it comes to the legal issues. it's very blurry when it comes to legal issues and the only regulator for this type of activity is the commodity futures trading

commission very drastically under-funded i mean there's a big new york times story paper i believe where they can't even afford staplers they're going through just talking to different regulators and talking about how they handle a bargain for a bus passes to get to new york just to check on some of these agencies more over one of this trading goes on on live or in london and moved online markets no one really knows what's going on so you know it's great that obama announced this d.o.j. see if you see task force look for illegal manipulation but there's legal. excessive speculation that's the big problem here and there's no one who's really policing it or overseeing what's going on so once again and no one's policing anything that's going on do you think that that means that we have a bubble that's going to burst. i mean i think so i'm not a financial expert i have done a lot of research in the last few months to write this piece but you know a lot of the experts i spoke to including former staffers at the see if you see so
