one stream can ski from mountain slopes to you is mr lynch. and a speed of more than two hundred kilometers. to the launch. in tokyo thousands demonstrate for clean energy three months after an earthquake triggered the fukushima nuclear crisis to which there's still no end in sight. activists in switzerland tried to breach the wall of silence surrounding one of the world's most secretive and influential gatherings demanding the builder of her proconsul clean on what they're up to. and along with the trying to fourteen winter olympics sochi is preparing to host the paralympic games to be followed by a major construction efforts aiming to make the city a more hospitable place for people with disabilities.
10:01 am
live from our studios in central moscow you're watching r t with me and he's now away it's six pm here in the russian capital eleven pm in tokyo and three months longer panda struggling to recover from its toughest crisis since the second world war on a nine magnitude earthquake sent a merciless enone which left thousands dead and missing a natural disaster triggered a major radiation leak at the fukushima nuclear facility and is still on the verge of a full scale nuclear catastrophe or course on its own thomas is in tokyo where anger over the situation is spilling onto the streets. it is three months after the devastating earthquake and tsunami which rocked japan and devastated the fukushima region of course creating the nuclear disaster at the tepco daiichi power plant where we now know that three reactors have melted down and possibly melted throughout today is
10:02 am
a very interesting day at tepco headquarters in central tokyo thousands of people have gathered some in support of nuclear power believe it or not and thousands more who are walking the streets and organized protests carrying signs and banners and shouting out slogans through loudspeakers against nuclear power saying that there needs to be alternative sources of energy of all this of course in front of the temple headquarters the company was possible for the daiichi power plant and one of the reasons why this is important is that within the past week new information has come out saying that capital at the initial phases of the disaster lied about the amount of radiation that was coming in and tried to downplay the situation saying that the radiation levels were not as bad that there could possibly be a meltdown then of course this past week it was revealed that they cut those numbers in a half in fact. the government is not providing proper information and people young and old want to know the truth of the course of the situation with the radio ads
10:03 am
and the missions has not changed in the last three months nothing has changed since the very beginning the communities devastated the people have no homes there's no place to walk everything is destroyed the school also coming to life is the nuclear fuel not only melted down but possibly melted through the inner containment vessels and into the outer stainless steel linings which is a much much more serious problem one thing that people are worried about is the amount of radioactive water that is in the area this is the beginning of the rainy season and people are worried that the more rain that radioactive water will then still out any flooding the area has been working terminations also people are very angry about the children their schools which are contaminated is. well right now kids are exposed to higher levels of radiation going to ever have been in the past and they have to stay inside in sealed buildings and out it will be to play outside it's also very hot and impossible recognitions people there everybody by surprise one person from the prime minister sharon has actually over so i said he would not
10:04 am
subject his grandchild that is he a she is a cardinals this is a wife and ministers with their own children to protect themselves from these higher levels of radiation of course our goal is in archie crews to go into the fukushima zone and we're going to go in with some kind of crews and see how that process is going right now but from. sean thomas are three. who are analysis on the current situation in japan and we're joined by dr robert chaika pastor of nuclear history at the here seem at peace institute thanks for being with us this hour dr jacobs we just heard from saw in their government reports of course released earlier in the week i think the damage and leakage were worse than previously thought but this really mean and just how dangerous is this for the country and its people. it's extremely dangerous the tepco and the government of japan it's known from the first few days of this incident that there were three full meltdowns that had occurred as information was kept from the public. the situation
10:05 am
currently is as you say that it was going to melt through the initial containment into the secondary containment and. at this point what we hope is that the melted core will not melt through that second containment if it goes through that second containment and exits the plant and enters into the ground this is unprecedented it's never happened ever before and nobody really knows exactly what that would lead to but i would also add that the amount in chernobyl there were a lot of things there was a lot of anxiety about whether there would be radiation entering into the groundwater where there's been massive entry of radiation into the groundwater in fukushima and that will simply spread through throughout the the water table in the area of northern japan and so the extent to which that contamination will affect people could be quite wide and large why have this kind of information is so vital has the facts and clap some crap. well in every single incident in around the world
10:06 am
in which there's a serious nuclear accident there is always a strong effort to minimize the public understanding about what that accident is and the reason is seen is that minimizing public anxiety and panic is an important thing but the trade off obviously in this case and in all these cases is that you increase the risk to public health and the exposures of citizens to radiation. so. that information should have been given to people immediately so that people can make the right decision people with young children who are particularly vulnerable to radiation exposure because their bodies are growing rapidly would be able to make a decision to move those children out of those areas where pregnant women would be able to move out of those areas by the pharmaceutical point of view you could say that it was successful public relations because at the time that three nuclear power plants melted down with the press largely was saying was can kemah government and the company get it under control well that was not an option it was not you
10:07 am
know they had melted down so when that happened the press was hopeful that it could be brought under control and then when the news finally emerges that three plants had melted down it's essentially not on the media radar anymore because it's months later so from a public relations point of view that successful however from a public health point of view it's disastrous with that said hundreds of plant workers are still scrambling to bring the crippled focusing reactors to a cult down i don't think we'll be able to breathe a sigh of relief when do you think this will finally be. well hopefully will be able to breathe a sigh of relief in two thousand and twelve at this point but that's the case scenarios are that tepco will be able to bring the plants and will not the plants the melted fuel into a safe hold state by early next year so far nothing else has gone right so this is a best case scenario but when when will this be over it won't be over for decades
10:08 am
they're still impacts from the accident internal it will be amount of radiation released into the sea and into the groundwater and also into the areas such high levels that this will ripple forward for decades to be health impacts and of the contaminations and people will not return to their own residence of the same a prefects era were evacuated of course from the area directly after the nuclear crisis began based on your own experience i think the example of these government has done everything to protect its people from writing. i think that they have it i think that there are still people living in areas where there is high radiation and there's children going to school in areas where there's high radiation and so there's been a reluctance to move as quickly as possible and what's more my own studies have a lot to do with the impact of radiation on communities over a long period of time socially and a lot of people from the fukushima area who even people who were born there but
10:09 am
live in tokyo are experiencing discrimination in japan by people who consider them possibly contaminated even though radiation is not transferable to other people but there are a lot of problems ahead if i can give you one quick example in august there's a very important holiday in japan called obama in which everyone returns to their hometown because the spirits of ancestors come to their burial places where their ashes are interned and the family welcomes them these people exclusions and will not be able to observe this will they just holiday and welcome there the spirits of their ancestors who return on when people find that their. unable to carry out their familial obligations for decades because they can't return to these areas people tend to blame themselves even if there are structural reasons so there needs to be some work done to help people through not just the radiation exposure but the social breakdown is that all the radiation exposure is in communities right dr robert jacobs live from hiroshima thank you very much for your analysis thank you.

because they have repeatedly said and he said all who is leaving office meeting part on the other hand i believe that we have signs that in fact there are five channels between gadhafi and the rebels some of the rebel leaders who are in discussions with the major leaders. of so that they also talk with the silence or. have a problem but who is in charge of the politics on the ground in libya and she would . not necessarily. leaders would like. it's a gathering of political and financial elite and it's well of secrecy isn't forced by an army of security guards it's all bankrolled by swiss taxpayers even as europe tightens its belt and forces through brutal sterrett cuts the bills are part conferences attended by people ranging from royalty to top news outlets c.e.o.'s and it's also under a now traditional media blackout art is there any. opposition to the build a group meeting here in switzerland has brought together parties and special
