here crisis to which there's still no end in sight. activists in switzerland tried to breach the wall of silence surrounding one of the world's most secretive and influential gatherings demanding the builder per brew comes clean on what they're up to. and along with the trying to fourteen winter olympics sochi is preparing to host the paralympic games be followed by a major construction effort taming to make the city a more hospitable place for people with disabilities. live from our studios in central moscow you're watching our team with me and he said no way it's six pm here in the russian capital eleven pm in tokyo and three months on japan is struggling to recover from its toughest crisis since the second world war when a nine magnitude earthquake sent a merciless tsunami which left thousands dead and missing the natural disaster

triggered a major radiation leak at the fukushima nuclear facility and is still on the verge of a full scale nuclear catastrophe our correspondent sean thomas is in tokyo where anger over the situation is spilling onto the streets. it is a three months after the devastating earthquake and tsunami which rocks japan and devastated the fukushima region of course creating the nuclear disaster at the tepco daiichi power plant where we now know that three reactors have melted down and possibly melted throughout today is a very interesting day at the tepco headquarters in central tokyo thousands of people have gathered so much in support of nuclear power believe it or not and thousands more who are walking the streets in organized protests carrying signs and banners and shouting out slogans through loudspeakers against nuclear power saying that there needs to be alternative sources of energy of all this of course and sort of the tepco headquarters the company responsible for the daiichi power plant one

of the reasons why this is important is that within the past week new information has come out saying that tepco at the initial phases of the disaster lied about the amount of radiation that was coming in and tried to downplay the situation saying that the radiation levels were not as bad that there could possibly be a meltdown then of course this past week it was revealed that they cut those numbers in a half in fact i have not done the government is not providing proper information and people young and old want to know the truth of the course of the situation with the radioactive emissions has not changed in the last three months nothing has changed since the very beginning the communities devastated the people have no homes there is no place to walk everything is destroyed the school also coming to life is that the nuclear fuel not only melted down but possibly melted through the inner containment vessels and into the outer stainless steel linings which is a much much more serious problem one thing that people are worried about is the

amount of radioactive water that is in the area this is the beginning of the rainy season and people are worried that with the more rain that radioactive water will then still out in flood in the area causing more contamination also people are very angry about the children their schools which are contaminated is. right now kids are exposed to higher levels of radiation than they ever have been in the past and they have to stay inside in sealed buildings without the ability to play outside it's also very hot and impossible are usually very angry about their surprise one person from the prime minister sharon has actually said he will not subject his i'm trying to this day think it is a car that goes with just a few minutes or with their own children to judge themselves for these higher levels of radiation of course our goal is in our cheap crews to go into the fukushima zone and we're going to go in with some clean up crews and see how that process is going right now but from tokyo sean thomas r t. well for more analysis on the current situation in japan we're joined live by dr robert jacob the pastor

of nuclear history at the here seem at peace institute thanks for being with us this hour dr jacobs we just heard from some their government reports of course released earlier in the week saying the damage and leakage were worse than previously thought what does this really mean and just how dangerous is this for the country and its people. it's extremely dangerous but the tepco and the government of japan it's known from the first few days of this incident that there were three full meltdowns that had occurred this information was kept from the public. the situation currently is as you say that there's been a melt through of the initial containment into the secondary containment and. at this point what we hope is that the the melted core will not melt through that second containment if it melts through that second containment and exits the plant and enters into the ground this is unprecedented it's never happened ever before and nobody really knows exactly what that would lead to but i would also add that

the amount in chernobyl there were a lot of things there was a lot of anxiety about whether there would be radiation entering into the groundwater where there's been massive entry of radiation into the groundwater in fukushima and that will simply spread through throughout the the water table in the area of northern japan and so the extent to which that contamination will affect people could be quite wide and large why have this kind of information is so vital has the facts been kept secret. well in every single incident in around the world in which there's a serious nuclear accident there is always a strong effort to minimize the public understanding about what that accident is and the reason is seen is that minimizing public anxiety and panic is an important thing but the trade off obviously in this case and in all these cases is that you increase the risk to public health and the exposures of citizens to radiation. so.

that information should have been given to people immediately so that people can make the right decision people with young children who are particularly vulnerable to radiation exposure because their bodies are growing rapidly would be able to make the decision to move those children out of those areas where pregnant women would be able to move out of those areas but from a cynical point of view you could say that it was successful public relations because at the time that three nuclear power plants melted down what the press largely was saying was can the can the government and the company get it under control well that was not an option it was not you know they had melted down so when that happened the press was hopeful that it could be brought under control and then when the news finally emerges that three plants had melted down it's essentially not in the media radar anymore because it's months later so from a public relations point of view that successful however from a public health point of view it's disastrous with that said hundreds of plant workers are still scrambling to bring the crippled focusing reactors to

a cult down why do you think will be able to breathe a sigh of relief when do you think this saga will finally be over. well hopefully will be able to breathe a sigh of relief in two thousand and twelve at this point the best case scenarios are that tepco will be able to bring the plants and not the plants that melted fuel into a safe cold state by early next year so far nothing else has gone right so this is a best case scenario but when when will this be over it won't be over for decades there's still impacts from the accident in turn all of all the amount of radiation released into the sea and into the groundwater and also into the areas such high levels that this will ripple forward for decades they'll be health impacts and will be contaminations and people will not return to their own. residents of the focusing that prefects are were evacuated of course from the area directly after the nuclear crisis began based on your own experience there think the japanese

government has done everything to protect its people from writing. i think bed that that they have it i think that there are still people living in areas where there's high radiation and there's children going to school in areas where there's high radiation and so there's been a reluctance to move as quickly as possible and what's more my own studies have a lot to do with the impact of radiation on communities over a long period of time socially and a lot of people from the fukushima area who even people who were born there but who live in tokyo are experiencing discrimination in japan by people who consider them possibly contaminated even though radiation is not transferable to other people but there are a lot of problems ahead if i could give one quick example in august there's a very important holiday in japan called obama on in which everyone returns to their hometown because the spirits of ancestors come to their burial places where their ashes are interned and the family welcomes them these people exclusions and
