2:00 pm
it's exactly three months since an earthquake triggered the fukushima nuclear disaster and people in japan are out of the streets demanding something be done about the continuing crisis. in switzerland activists are venting their anger at the media blackout surrounding one of the world's most secretive and influential gatherings and trying to shine a light on the building but group is up to. a level playing field in the southern russian city of sochi undertakes major efforts to ease access for people with disabilities ahead of the twenty fourteen paralympics.
2:01 pm
international news and common life for most of us here in central moscow this is. three months old japan is struggling to recover from its toughest crisis since the second world war when a huge earthquake caused a merciless tsunami which left a missing the natural disaster triggered a major radiation leak at the fukushima nuclear facility and it's still on the verge of a full scale nuclear catastrophe. thomas is in tokyo where anger over the situation is spilling onto the streets. this is three months after they got a starting point and tsunami which rocked japan and devastated the fukushima region of course creating the nuclear disaster at the chapo daiichi power plant where we now know that three reactors have melted down and possibly melted throughout today is a very interesting day at the tepco headquarters in central tokyo thousands of people
2:02 pm
have gathered some in support of nuclear power believe it or not and thousands more who are walking the streets in organized protests carrying signs and banners and shouting out slogans through loudspeakers against nuclear power saying that there needs to be alternative sources of energy of all this of course and for the type of headquarters the company was sponsible for the guy power plant and one of the reasons why this is important is that within the past week new information has come out saying that tepco at the initial phases of the disaster lied about the amount of radiation that was coming in and tried to downplay the situation saying that the radiation levels were not as bad that there could possibly be a meltdown then of course this past week it was revealed that they cut those numbers in half in fact. the government is not providing proper information and people young and old want to know the truth of the. situation with the radioactive emissions has not changed in the last three months nothing has changed since the
2:03 pm
very beginning to communities devastated people have no homes there's no place to walk everything is destroyed school also coming to life is that the nuclear fuel not only melted down but possibly melted through the inner containment vessels and into the outer stainless steel linings which is a much much more serious problem one thing that people are worried about is the amount of radioactive water that is in the area this is the beginning of the rainy season and people are worried that with more rain that radioactive water will then spill out in flooding the area causing walking terminations also people are very angry about the children their schools which are contaminated is. right now kids are exposed to higher levels of radiation really ever have been in the past and they have to stay inside in sealed buildings the ability to play outside it's also very hot. possible i. suppose one person from the prime minister sharon has actually said he would not subject his mantra that this is
2:04 pm
a kind of acknowledge this is a within assessment or entrepreneur to exact themselves of these higher levels of radiation of course our goal is in our key crews to go into this appreciate and we're going to go in with some cleanup crews in see how that process is going right now but from sean thomas r.t. . for more analysis on the current situation in japan let's cross live now to sean bernie he's an independent nuclear energy consultant based in the u.k. thanks very much for being with us here on r.t. well as we've just seen in that report thousands of nuclear protesters marching in japan demonstrating for the closure of its atomic power station do you really think that japan will listen to them and actually pull the plug on its reactors now. i think there's large sections of the japanese society that want an alternative to nuclear power a japanese government i think is divided on this issue i think prime minister can probably would like to see less nuclear he's from the democratic party the
2:05 pm
opposition party liberal democrats who are attacking prime minister current they're the ones largely responsible for the last half century of nuclear policy of japan and at the moment they're not being held accountable i think a broader understanding of how responsible a political party the l.d.p. their bureaucrats and the industry actually lead to a strong support for the current democratic government which could then push for a non-nuclear policy what about the situation now reports that their function is still emitting radiation and the government's reports suggesting that the situation there is much worse than previously thought now when this story first broke i spoke from analysts from the us he said this could be too noble on steroids if you think you could be right now. well we first talked about the fuel melt within about two hours of hearing that they'd lost complete cooling of the reactors at fukushima daiichi they were it was inevitable and tecla knew this and you saw the japanese
2:06 pm
regulators knew this and the entire global nuclear industry russian government u.s. government british government the i.a.e.a. we all knew that nuclear fuel would melt if you lose cooling capacity of operating reactors that all took place within hours of the earthquake and tsunami and it's taken two now three months for some of this information to be officially confirmed by the government the situation is not under control at the site and as you said and you heard from your reporter there is huge contamination problems on the site which direction for the releases into the environment ok please explain then what those threats are now if the situation really could be as bad as people suggest what could the consequences be now well the first thing is that the explosions that took place in the first days they released a large amount to redo activity perhaps ninety percent of it ended into that entered into the pacific because the prevailing winds perhaps ten percent landed or
2:07 pm
more landed on the mainland of japan which is why you've got contamination tens and tens of kilometers away from the site the problem is that as a result of these explosions and as a result of the core melt in these reactors contaminated water the water that was cooled by used by to cool to cool the reactors has no built up on site we know that maybe five to ten thousand tons has been released into the pacific but there's an additional one hundred thousand tons of highly contaminated water sitting inside the reactor buildings inside the turbine holes ok because if you deal with that is very limited and they're sick predicting that by the end of this year it could be one quarter of a million tons of highly contaminated water what about some of the anecdotal evidence is coming out to kind of a moment. a lot of the international media covered a story about the birth of a white rabbit with no ears and it did actually spark a lot of alarm within the fukushima area could something like that really be a consequence of what's happened there or is this just an overreaction people
2:08 pm
jumping to too exaggerated speculation there's going to be a lot of these stories there's certainly there's a serious issue of the long term health consequences and environmental consequence the radiation i think we can discount the idea of a rabbit being infected at this stage radiation depending on the take radiation can be seen in a relatively short period of time to collude with thyroid cancers in children but more long term. is already several decades i've got i've got to finish here very quickly you are an independent nuclear energy consultant is the nuclear energy industry on its last legs and what do you say to people saying try to put people at ease or could your business in such the nuclear energy business be really a threat and closed down particularly think of germany has asked you to pretend that very quickly the german government has taken the right decision you cannot guarantee nuclear safety you can see it was already on its last legs of fukushima this is really going to be the end but it's critical long time sean bernie thanks so much for that good to hear what you have to say joining us live there in the
2:09 pm
u.k. thank you. well coming up for you are here the. talk show host the resident goes fishing for opinion on the recent hacking attacks on giant companies like sony must think. it was big in the orioles because they can solve. everything they are they are the product all of the security systems this and some less positive takes on the hackers and their motives in a few minutes also coming up here or to you. there are a lot of different legends and myths around this area in the past calls to try to avoid going to the city of dallas and they say anyone who dares to get in will never get out alive find out how russia close up seemed to bring you this report from the mystical heart of the country's deep south. a story still to come but first a number of u.s. congressmen have received
2:10 pm
a letter currently written by colonel gadhafi saying he's ready to negotiate a cease fire and asking for humanitarian aid and authenticity of the letter has not been confirmed nato is continuing to step up its airstrikes on the capital tripoli that's as quote a fresh lawsuit like a look at his daughter against the french president nicolas sarkozy and nato for killing four members of a family during an airstrike in april meanwhile the turkish prime minister has offered colonel gadhafi exit guarantees to wherever he chooses professor mark called and of oxford university says the libyan leader's position is not because the west's making girls. he's obviously under pressure is. nato but it also seemed that in the u.s. congress a resolution was passed critical or what president obama has done since the bombing started. there is division in washington and perhaps in the west in general inside nato it's very difficult for the u.s. and its major allies britain her arms to accept any kind of cease fire. because
2:11 pm
they have repeatedly said that any second one can only follow is leaving office moving are on the other hand we have signs that is also from gadhafi and the rebels some of the rebel leaders who were in discussions with the later leaders. have said that they are also told with the summons not. have a problem but nato is in charge of the ultrix on the ground in libya eventually we decided not necessarily as the nato leaders would like. it's a gathering of political and financial elite in switzerland and it's very of secrecy is in force by an army of security guards it's all bankrolled by swiss taxpayers even as europe times its bills and forces through tough austerity cuts the bills about conferences attended by people ranging from royalty to news outlets c.e.o.'s and is also under under a now traditional media blackout. as this report. as this building meeting
2:12 pm
has progressed here in summer it's in switzerland more and more protesters have turned out to say they don't want it to happen here they're camping out outside the hotel showing up in numbers really from all over the world there are swiss people obviously but i will say many germans austrians swedes and even americans who come all the way here either to report on what's going on or just to protest here with their feet on the ground in person some of the people behind me say that they have been subjected to low grade harassment by the swiss police threats of deportation things of that nature they have varying degrees of suspicion about the building group some say that they are scheming behind closed doors to introduce a new world order but some just want to point out that in many countries it's illegal for elected officials to meet in secret in these kinds of surroundings let's hear what some of the protesters told me because swedish and these the politicians are according to swedish law or committing diplomatic treason and
2:13 pm
if they were sentenced if they were judged and sentenced they would be imprisoned for ten years to life according to these people think it's a conspiracy theory but in fact this is the ignorance of the people we've known for a long time pretty much what's been going on there. and it's definitely not good if you manage the market for the planet. and you know i don't want my keep growing up to be a slave in the new world order to be honest this is not the only protest day about kilometer away down in the town of summer it's the young swiss socialists have turned out again to process in fact they dismiss the people behind me they say a lot of the these people are essentially a crackpot conspiracy theorists but what they're here to say is this meeting goes against everything that they perceive to be switzerland that neutrality the transparency that they want to promote here. in switzerland just isn't evident in
2:14 pm
the dealings of the bills bird group the economic crisis. policy a conference into global leaders we see more democrats see. this year's meeting in switzerland does look like a different affair from last year since it just in spain there are more processes here there's also more media attention a lot of alternative media journalists are turned up to try to report on what's going on although r.t. is the only international news station that's represented here so we are seeing more protests we are seeing better organized protests than we saw last year better organized media facilities so it does look like if this momentum can be carried on the building a comfortable meeting in secret like this for very much longer. i spoke to investigative journalist tony gosling earlier and he believes the media's blackout of the building conference is unacceptable given the far reaching decisions made by those attending. it is pretty obvious to me that this is
2:15 pm
a complete most convenient way to distract attention to say the sort of mix up this very important meeting with other silly kind of spurious conspiracy theories and i can tell you my blood is boiling at the lack of coverage in the western world if you had all of the leaders of the main banks in the west all of these royalty all the chief executives as well as people like george osborne with his treasury team there i mean we're talking about an incredibly important meeting even if one of these groups were to meet up together it would be on our headlines but since they're all in the same place you would expect more coverage i mean even from the gaza incident down there. isn't that the choice of the group they want a media blackout so they can discuss openly and honestly amongst themselves without being reported erroneously or whatever they don't want the media to be there is that right. well they don't want the media that's because i think what they're what they're up to in there is absolutely is no good we have to look at what nato is up
2:16 pm
to and it is very important to understand the very close links between eight and the builder burks it was set up around about the same time as nato just after the second world war by the cia and the council on foreign relations who'd been talking about this during and after world war two the idea that this organization is not important not important enough for us to know about this country is just ridiculous around the western world because what's happening here is we are spending our years voting in local and general elections and this arrogant bunch are choosing our party leaders so it almost doesn't matter which way we vote we still find that this secret artificial consensus which is cooked up at these build a bird meetings spreads out around the world and it's not just me saying that this is will hutton who actually went to one of these meetings when he was still the editor of the observer newspaper here in britain. well for more on any of the stories we're covering if you want to see that interview in full you can always log on to our web site is hearty dot com and of course there are plenty of other features and news there for you online at the moment including there you can

a welcome mat for disabled athletes from around the world. is it easy for a man in a wheelchair to travel to sochi a tough question for the mayor and his aides as the city's preparing to host the two thousand and fourteen winter paralympics he asked russia's paralympic champion mikkel today in chief to inspect so cheese newly built airport. i actually like that this place is one of the few airports in russia that has lived a device that helps to civil passengers to board the plane for the city however there are issues that require attention and i'm sure they'll be there. all newly built ice rink steady and ski lifts and sochi are equipped in accordance with stricter olympic standards but in the city itself with its aging infrastructure still a lot has to be done to comply sochi sidewalks shops and restaurants are also undergoing massive construction to comply with strict standards so that nowhere is off limits and even though competitions such as ice hockey and alpine skiing will be held far

from the city center thanks to the games he will be more accessible for people with disabilities living in less than legacy of visitors alike russia's paralympic squad the overall standings of the vancouver two thousand and ten winter games with thirty eight medals twelve gold silver and sixteen bronze we spoke with russia's paralympic champion. as he was preparing for the three week training in sochi. we're proud that russia will be hosting the paralympics it's good when the games are being held at home but on the other hand it's a great responsibility just q who's. the first paralympics. in skiing and biathlon will be held as early as next year drawing unprecedented international attention to the small russian town so for most people here it's a chance to show their hospitality to the special guests creating a comfortable barrier free environment the first of its kind in russia and also

a great opportunity to see the russian paralympic team in. action. spanish police arrested three men believed to be involved in carrying out cyber attacks on governments and companies including sony and master card and suspects have been identified as members of the worldwide hacking group anonymous well this week online talk show host the resident takes to the streets of new york to gauge people's attitude to. so many intend out even the f.b.i. it seems like no one is safe from hackers these days i d's cyberpunks heroes are belittled this week let's talk about that. they are heroes because. they are they are. security systems so what if a robber a bank robber is technically. proficient enough to get into a bank does that make him a hero to. the police department goes into certain things and the government goes
2:21 pm
into certain things probably i would put that on the same level as i would someone who goes in and hacks into a site they're not supposed to be on their harvest which are five thing for some kind of logical point because we're just doing illegal activities. things just to make. done really to open things that should be i don't have that much of a problem is that it's so subjective though why are we in trusting thieves essentially making that kind of a judgment call. that's a strong word well they're going to take in people's an information good or bad for the good or bad will if you're if you're going in and you're taking a lot of credit card numbers and credit card accounts and doing that type of thing . you're using that information again her products. i don't think that's a good thing have you ever had your personal information had i. you know and i felt
2:22 pm
. so violated and trying to control the information. it's awful feelings oh i think it's going to get worse much worse because i have five daughters ranging from twenty three down to twelve years old and they're you know they don't think anything's ever going to happen to them and they're out there with all of it and even though the warnings from parents they're the next generation so have you caught them putting stuff out there and you're like don't get out there and you're. this is cell phone numbers yeah whether you think hackers are villains or heroes the bottom line is if you have information in a database someplace in fears about a potential target. you know we look at some other world news in brief the states of the twenty children. spanish police were forced to break up a protest outside the city hall in the capital it came as the news was sworn in and

there are a lot of different legends and myths around this area in the past locals try to avoid going to the city of dallas they say anyone who dares to get in will never get out alive and even now there are hardly any tourists around this place which might be more to the difficulty of getting here rather than any death curse. in the times of the pleat many people with no one left a group of them would come to the crypt and wait for the dam first mansion about the century of the dance of the beginning of the fourteenth century the ancestors of uncertainty. and saddle down on the five mountain ridges with the land was so expensive they were forced to choose the windiest and most unserviceable place to build a cemetery these days the area now provides a huge opportunity for archaeologists items found at the cemetery have been treat
