all. baby cohen matters all the way from reactor number one in cupertino city radiation levels are much higher or deemed it to be safe i'm sure thomas in fukushima city and coming up we have all the detailed. plans to expand its strikes to libya's northwest colonel could use a high profile chess game to reiterate his reluctance to leave the country. is this new media hype over the scandalous case of an american senator tweeting the racy pictures of himself and spot concerns that the u.s. is letting gossip overshadow the real news.
7:03 am
very warm welcome to you this is. real research now radioactive material has been detected in seawater around japan's fukushima plant with concentration levels two hundred forty times higher than safety limits scientists warn that the element of strong highly dangerous to humans as a kind of buns and possibly cause cancer. thomas has been to fukushima city to measure the radiation levels. here we're eighty kilometers away and the radiation levels in this area in many many places in many instances are much bigger or really close because if you look at a map where he is in relation to the actual nuclear facility plant number one where a lot of that radiation. relating from look the winds are bringing that radiation.
7:04 am
shamus. city and the rain in the wind is blowing the radiation in this direction so we were at a spot where the radiation levels were one thousand times what is considered to be a safe dosage so. very very dangerous levels and so scientists so that we are working with today from different universities are working together on projects to try to figure out ways to use a simple methods to actually clean that radiation up and these guys actually. are working to the can contaminate the soil right now. and as you can see the two women are wearing any protective clothing clothing but the scientists are so one of the concerns is that you can actually have one spot which is only thirty times in the accepted normal levels and then you go to another spot which is just a metre away and it can jump to five hundred to a thousand times depending on where rain water and mud have collected one of the
7:05 am
concerns of course is that grass is you can see to filter for nuclear ready at the material and. draw into grassy places when they go to those areas they could actually be absorbing more radiation from the grasses well so what's interesting is this area that we're in right now is considered a safe area it is not considered a mandatory evacuation area but authorities are looking into to see whether it should be considered evacuation area or at least hot spots within the city should be evacuated because of these very very high micro places these small hotspots if you will where the radiation is just off the charts. thomas and now let's get some more insight from japan we're joined by james corbett who's the editor of the independent news website colbert report dot com so as we've just heard from our correspondent the levels of radiation in some spots eighty kilometers away from the plant are a thousand times higher than normal people that i think still at risk do you think
7:06 am
. well i think i think that question in a way presupposes the answer because as we know from the bare seven report put out by the national academy of sciences back in two thousand and five there is no such thing as a safe level of radiation exposure that any level of radiation exposure increases the risk of cancer and however negligible that risk may be with any particular person on any particular day at any particular spot when it's averaged out over a large population like is living in the fukushima region that unfortunately means there will be over time an increase in cancer rates there and it's really just a question of how many and and at this point we obviously can't say because we don't even at this point know the extent of the scope of of the radiation danger but but as that report reveals it's obviously much higher than has been previously supposed indeed much higher than has been reported but when you're talking about issues of cancer let's talk about the chemical of strong t m a high concentration of strong detected in the sea and groundwater near the
7:07 am
fukushima plant was dangerous does it pose in comparison to the leaks that we are all ready aware of. well that's a that's a good question and i think one of the one of the big issues here is simply the amount of radioactive water that already exists so any new leaks of any kind are going to be an incredible burden on the efforts that are already on underway to try to clean up the water or decontaminate it because they are now running out of space to actually store the contaminated water in the fukushima in the immediate vicinity of the plant and i believe within two weeks they're actually going to run out of space so they're trying to get a system on line for treating the water but apparently they test for that is going to be pushed back another few days it's already been pushed back from last friday and it's maybe not scheduled to start until tuesday or wednesday so so at this point it's becoming a very grim situation and any new leaks i think will only burden the efforts that are already underway to try to decontaminate the incredible twelve hundred tons of
7:08 am
contaminated water that are already seeping out per day from the orrible tragedy now as you as you mentioned the issue of running out of space where are you still contaminated water and other radio active materials three months into the crisis thousands of evacuees are still stuck in crowded temporary shelters and what does the immediate future look like for them at this point. well unfortunately it's just about as bleak as it's been at any point in the past three months certainly three months in the still living in emergency shelters and. many of them have been relocated several times now the schools and places where they are originally staying opened for the new school year back in april and they were kicked out of various gyms and other facilities that they were using at that time so so it's really quite a grim situation for those who are still evacuees but even even the people who do actually have residences in the area and are in somewhat of a stable condition they are still unfortunately going to be suffering the effects
7:09 am
of this for a long time as they're dealing with radiation and the media is telling people here that it's just a question of wearing long sleeves and trying to stay out of the rain if possible but it's going to be. quite a difference to their daily lives i would imagine. that the media there could be downplaying the severity of this ongoing tragedy but you mention it being a grim situation you're in japan right now i mean is there any sense of optimism among the people that an end to the crisis could be approaching. i don't think so i don't think optimism would be the right word i think from what i've seen it's more of a question of well we'll have to put up with this too so people are beginning to adjust their their lives and routines and and we see that in all sorts of different aspects of daily life here but but one of them is the introduction of a new phenomenon called super cool because where in an effort to save air conditioning because obviously there's a lot less electricity available for the tokyo area businesses are no converting to
7:10 am
to very casual wear there they're changing business hours to try to accommodate. the more so the daylight savings and that sort of thing so so there is just every day types of shifts in people's schedules and routines that are being made and i think people are just putting up with it and and as far as seeing an end to this or seeing some sort of hope in this i just don't see that at this at this point so you say not a sense of optimism among the people there in japan but certainly some lifestyle changes being made to adjust journalist colbert report dot com thank you thank you . the thousands have been out on the streets of athens in protest against the second round of austerity measures debated in the greek parliament people don't want new taxes or wage cuts but without them the country won't receive international bailout cash sarah ferguson athens. where you can see just how many people have turned to the price by the well they
