you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else in here or see some other part of it and realize that everything is ok and you don't i'm trying hard welcome to the big picture. let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right here. i think iraq is even funny well. whenever the government says they're for keeping safe get ready because of their freedom.
6:31 pm
for food for food. all right it's time for tonight's tool time award and it goes to arianna huffington the woman who made three hundred fifteen million dollars after selling huffington post a.o.l. earlier this year as decided to add a new feature to the web site that she still runs huff po now offers
6:32 pm
a blog concierge service now you might be asking what the hell's that arianna says the service is for busy celebrities who just don't have time to sit down to write a blog so they can call in and dictate a blog to an editor over the phone and then the blog just magically appears on the site are you serious sorry i mean come on most celebrities are spoiled rotten ego driven maniacs who have their every need it catered to so why they need a blog a concierge service if they're going to write something that they want to call the region they actually be required to write the damn thing i wonder if our own is going to pay these celebrity bloggers as we discussed on the show before she doesn't pay most of the hard working men and women who actually made her site popular not at all but that got us thinking today. we're probably signed up for the blog concierge service we think it will i am is a good candidate he's cute busy to write his own blog because really hard being for he's back up singer and let's face it obama's poll numbers are weak so he's going
6:33 pm
to have to write a new song to help him keep him in the white house and we're not really sure if we'll i am might be a hologram in for c.n.n. during next year's presidential election. we're joined now in hologram with. who is live again where part but see you know again you know. there we go will thanks very much for being with us how was this night for you. oh this is great you know we're ready. a brand new day in america and it feels good being in chicago. all this technology i'm being beamed to you like it's star wars though. yeah that was probably one of the most ridiculous moments on t.v. ever but anyway here's your chance to pretend like you have something politically potent to say but just let someone else do the work for you you know who else might make that obviously arnold schwarzenegger is a busy man these days well he's got two families to take care of and he's trying to restart his movie career so maybe he's going to use that blog concierge service now
6:34 pm
offered although he's not the governor anymore doesn't really mean that he has to start doing his own writing good lord then it lindsey lowe and must be signing up for the blog concierge service she's so busy these days between court hearings community service where she offered to teach acting to homeless women and visiting the probation office that she simply just doesn't have enough time to do it all and write down a blog about how hard or how hard it is to resist drugs when you're overpaid so those are just the three celebrities that we think should probably sign up for the huffington post news service now if you can't tell we're obviously kidding here because i think a blog concierge service for visit celebrities as a joke maybe we stop letting so many celebrities express their political views unless they actually know what they're talking about maybe they don't depend on a concierge service to air their dirty laundry that's what your p.r. agent support and that's why arianna huffington is now offering the service is tonight's top line where. now president obama has always claimed that he's devoted to education and his work to keep america competitive but the struggling economy
6:35 pm
a lot of those students have put their educational goals on hold while they help their family california is a perfect example of this problem as two million kids are living in poverty and thirteen percent of that are homeless archies are among the lindo takers to los angeles to share the story of one boy's working hard to save his family and is education. i want to kids to go to this is fourteen years old man this is about to try to talk your palmer has been forced to grow up faster than most kids after losing everything in hurricane katrina he and his father had it west but their move to the golden state has only led to poverty unemployment and ultimately homelessness is not a good thing for a kid to should go to go to you know at all and i mean good i mean i was here what i've been everywhere tokyo is among the growing number of homeless children in los angeles and around the nation last year the department of education reported that
6:36 pm
there were nearly a million homeless students in america's public schools thirteen thousand students in the l.a. area alone that's more than fifty percent increase in the past five years doing counselor undermost yes has seen this steady rise in homeless students since the housing crash these families that we how their home is looking for employment they want employment and quite frankly that just isn't important right now to feel comes home after school to a shelter which is actually right next to this mega hotel in downtown los angeles where suites run at more than four hundred dollars a night and you can spend the entire day relaxing in the ritz carlton spa the type of luxuries that tokyo and other students in a situation can only dream up and i think. the government base so high standards so high class that they don't have the web i don't bite still now what if you and i may put yourself in my shoes who can see insecurity that homeless students
6:37 pm
encounter makes it nearly impossible to succeed in school and move up in economic status a challenge likely to increase as legislators in washington debate making cuts to programs which help our nation's hungry tokyo's father believes that the baby is not really considering the people. more suffering on the streets we've got a war. we've got to warn them of getting our american people apart street tokyo knows you will get a good lunch at school but having dinner or even having a place to stay at night is always uncertain they call a car a home a park a home and shelter a home the national center on homelessness tested a portion of california's thirty four thousand homeless high school students and found that only nine percent were professional at reading and only five percent were profession math problem which will likely worsen as job losses foreclosures
6:38 pm
and even actions push more families to the streets to work we did our first of the moment because my. new home and this is home this is school despite dealing with poverty and discrimination tokyo still dreams of being a basketball player or a musician you. know going to schools like get some more kids in grades good to me. and yes even dreams of being the president of the united states until he reaches high office he has a message for those who are in power now we've given money to different people which i've chosen at home with children you know and your state. in your eyes and you can't help them no. for from the poor tours of power ideological battles oh challenge expressed with a clarity of childhood to the nation's elite los angeles. all
6:39 pm
right so for the last two weeks of nonstop wiener fever i've been bashing the media as you well know over the over the top incessant coverage that's blocked out every other story and i so fully stand by every single statement that i've made but the thing is it's not like we are a gate in itself is some singular phenomenon we see this happen all the time it almost seems like politicians and sex scandals become synonymous with larry craig david bitters eliot spitzer as anthony weiner is dominique strauss kahn is of the world too of course everyone's favorite cheater. i want you to listen and i'm going to say this is the. idea. of sexual relations with that woman miss lewinsky. i never told anybody to lie not a single time there were these allegations for fall and i need to go back to work for the america. so what is it about men in powerful positions that makes them do
6:40 pm
such stupid things and why don't we see people politicians doing the same joining me from our studio in new york is the keyboard contributing editor of vanity fair and author of the book the devil's casino friendship a betrayal and a high stakes games played inside lehman brothers thank you thank you so much for joining us tonight like i said i've been there are a ling and railing about this story and making fun of the media for the last two weeks and the way that they're obsessed with it and i have to admit i'm a little obsessed with making fun of them for it because it's fascinating to me but i really see it as you know i see it as a cop out i think they don't want to have to cover any real stories i think it's lazy on their part i think it shows what a tiny little new york d.c. bubble they live in but let me get someone else's opinion why do you think that there are just so thralls with this story. well with actually reno particularly. i think the thing ransley. particularly interesting if you've actually causes you.
6:41 pm
to read his texts to these various women is that this is i know this guy i've met him ten years ago and he's a guy in a real hurry politically he really wanted to be married in new york and the interesting is that this goes for all these guys is that the closer they get to actually attaining power the more stupid they are stupid do they behave in their private life almost like a sort of a game of daredevil if you will. and his text seems to be saying these girls who are saying you are so great and i'd love to you on the debate of why debate and he is responding to that and saying yes wasn't i great and now let me show you a photograph of something you might not want to see and i think that in a way the reason this was so compelling was because you saw a man. ambition overtake him. because you could see the
6:42 pm
texts that's in a funny way what made it more intriguing. you brought up arnold schwarzenegger i mean there's been rumors about him for years but it was sort of a train wreck in motion and we were able to see the motion you know the higher he were rose the more he exposed himself to to fall and i think having commented and written an article for vanity fair about this there is something about the culture in washington that lends itself to this when they call it hollywood for ugly people and i do. and i do remember ten years ago being in a room full of young interns male and female most of. and howard wolfson who was then the head of the d.n.c. walked in and i think howard wilson puffy nice man you would think brad pitt had
6:43 pm
walked into that room. people so the lines of twenty one year olds to talk to him chatting me up and i wrote a sort of controversial story covering these female in terms on the hill and in all honesty they enable leigh's male politicians to behave like this. man petitions wouldn't be able to do this if they weren't women agreeing to it and i think you know it there i think your point there regular me off for a second in the sense that yes you know people obviously women young women especially you find themselves attracted to this kind of power to men that are in powerful positions no matter what they look like especially in this town but what do you think it is about the men that specifically often they will just keep lying about it like the anthony wiener in the bill clinton's they'll go on camera and a lie about it they don't think they're going to get caught do they have some kind of a god complex or do you just get stupider as you go along and i have power that you
6:44 pm
get you know there's more risk taking involved you've written about why the street to you in this culture yes but i think we'll see and washington are similar and one respect that they're both bubbles washington has its own culture and so i think the higher that you write in washington or in will streatch the more cut off from reality you get and so in d.c. along those corridors and so i carefully and you know are far more forward than they would be on the street in new york they look you up it you down they say what are you doing for lunch i mean it's happened to me many times and i sort of circle it and they say oh senator whatever and. you can't believe the risks that they're taking but they you know the bubble i think they just complete. he lost touch with reality that is why in the end most of them have to go it's not because of the sexes because they have absolutely no idea what the people who elected them are
6:45 pm
actually thinking and why do you think. the same thing with women granted of course there are fewer female politicians in high ranking positions but you don't hear about women same thing. you don't and you know what i remember i never forget a credit for all diana davis who was one of the entire and she was twenty one year old and had on the hill when i did my piece ten years ago saying to me that she was very busy networking with older man and she ended up get it going missing a lot of important senators and lobbyists and. congressman but she didn't go there with the women she said no that will about work. kind of whole i thought of. you know the women work it's one of the reasons why you know i think that it's really tough to succeed as a as a woman and part of the experience actually you have to act a bit yeah there's
6:46 pm
a lot of already out to do you know to actually roll up their sleeves making i want to thank you very much for joining us but it's something that i guess will continue to fascinate us because i'm sure this isn't the final political sex scandal that any of us will see thanks so much now thank you. all still to come tonight we have the fireside friday and our last happy hour of the week another presidential candidate glitter and join the scientists complaining about his home confinement all while living in a large information state how can someone. you know just do a story and it seems so. you think you understand it and then you know here's the part of it and realize that everything you. are is the. world you're really good and you know.
6:48 pm
we have got to. keep him safe get ready because the freedom. to tonight's fireside with your home. comes. this week we saw the obama administration try to make the american people and members of congress will be it's easy upon increasing pressure to provide some answers as to lack of legal justification the lack of basic details plans and goals for the war in libya the obama administration issued their own a thirty two page report in response out of all the thirty two pages there was one
6:49 pm
paragraph line of paragraph that tried to explain why legally the president didn't need congressional approval to involve us into a war unilaterally and that's where the whole thing just got ugly. see their justification is that our involvement does not include the types of hostilities included in the war powers act because we don't have troops on the ground because we're not involved in sustained active exchanges of fire with hostile forces well guess what for starters the war of ours act doesn't differentiate between boots on the ground and firing more than one hundred tomahawk missiles which if you remember we the us did in the first few days of his war i mean humanitarian intervention you know to try to pretend like you can apply semantics to what's clearly a sustained bombing campaign against moammar gadhafi forces that's a slap in the face the american people know what's going on they also should know that within a couple of weeks the total cost of humanitarian lee intervening in libya is going to be one billion dollars it should also just be
6:50 pm
a laughable it is laughable that the administration repeatedly tries to claim within this report that we're soley involved in libya in a limited role and really nato is the one taking the lead well guess what in that exact same report they detail how the entire campaign would fall apart without us because the u.s. is nato but perhaps most frustrating most disturbing is that well they're just trying to play games now but the fact that the former constitutional law professor is trying to bend the law to its will that's not a control we let's face it this war was illegal from the start if you want to bring in the war powers act because there was no imminent threat to the united states because it has nothing to do with us so it doesn't matter how many days you count how many ways you twist your words it's a legal plain and simple unless it goes to the courts and they decide otherwise but in the meantime just spare me the condescension this war is illegal and you know it so just go plead your case to congress if you want to the pruett or congress voting against it if you want to end somebody do something so we can start having
6:51 pm
a debate about the legality where in reality there is no debate to be had it's not a game so stop treating it like one. ok so it's friday and it's time for happy hour so joining me this evening is our two producer jenny churchill and sarah thompson senior editor at the atlantic thanks for joining you guys but now obviously when i think of you and i don't interest senior editor of the atlantic i don't congratulations thank you very much a big deal is that i'm sorry it's totally glossed over that i think for a. while something that we talk about on the show all the time obviously is wiki leaks doing a son of the u.s. government's war against whistleblowers but in the meantime a sign in england that he's on house arrest but it's not like he sent in a jail cell or apparently has some complaints take
6:52 pm
a look. and see it so. pretty and to see the regime he's on things have this sort of braces on you that you come so you can. you know talking to your electronically in prison and showing this is a man that hasn't even been charged and he's being treated like a caged animal. and our problem with this you know i like we can make sure it was a show and i support what they do but they bradley manning right he has a say in solitary confinement for like ten months at quantico he had to sleep naked at night he was checked on every five minutes they didn't allow him to sleep in joining us on who is staying and has states in england he says there where. he's really complaining. i think it's grateful it was not a drink i think is crazy it was chafing that day he that was out of control i'm sorry he's like wandering around the town going to the mail i think it went to the post office then it signed he's trapped and come on like you separate brother
6:53 pm
meaning it's obviously in a much more situation and i'm going to show the jury could find these he's never solitary nor terribly confined but at the same time you know he has that you know. rights to you know i was legal rights respected in it i think it is it's conceivable that you can you can you can question the ways in which he's been treated but at the same time i think that using this way to complain about his treatment might not have been the best and it's like i was saying to you before there are a lot of ways that you could point out to make you feel bad for julian a son i just don't think the right on the part of let's you want to somebody else we've seen one republican politician get glitter because he hates gays and now i happen to never watch this. very. simple and to a book signing in san francisco i say that he should've known better than going to
6:54 pm
san francisco but what do you think about the whole glittering thing i think it's kind of fun i like it when i'm with the glitters on the marriage i think that he should have voted for this bill that would have given end of life rights to gay couples and i'm also sort of with them on the procedure as well i think glitter is a good way to make your point it's sparkly it draws a lot of attention obviously we're talking about it right now it also doesn't really cause a mess you know it's not it's not when it's not sticky it's easy to clean sweep it out i've said you've made your point and i may want to instead of calling it a hate crime we call this a lot of crime you know it's cozy and cuddly and fighting for the most important if . that's what makes me happy about it but this is something that i think we every single summer we hear a story like this because it happens every single year and well guess what happened you can take a look at this sad sad story if i didn't i think again you. know you get here you count to one hundred dollars we're. operating
6:55 pm
a lemonade stand with. every kid down to. the register with the county about. another war i'm fine you can't even let a couple little kids set up their own home. and these kids are going to donate the money to p.b.s. for cancer and i really really get your article said so it seems that once again on the subject of p.r. not a very good move for this. well if you will also that entire news package they butted up with the fact that in the very same neighborhood people are letting people park on their lawns for the p.g.a. that's in town and they're making like thousands of dollars and these little kids are trying to sell lemonade for charity and are getting fined five hundred dollars and after that woman asked you know well does no one allowed to have a lemonade stand the guy sleeps with a kid you know dollars here and there your kids are raking in the cash like. yeah paper charity and being not as much as the people who ran our lives are being successful. that's just socialism exactly.
6:56 pm
the last really this is something that's right netroots nation is going on right now and russ feingold who is no longer. excuse me a set of their lost last time around because he didn't want to join into all of the corporate funding that we saw happen after citizens united ruling by the supreme court and this time around i mean we've covered this story on the show tonight we've seen already a lot of these organizations on the left wing also have these nice flowery names that are getting some of them for some reason they're not coming to my head right now but basically they take money from undisclosed donors and you have no idea where the money's coming from so it's like if you can't fight just you know join up but russ feingold is trying to fight back let's think of ways that. really goes kind of super pacs for democrats is wrong it is not something we should do i disagree luser sure when it comes to the you should. what gutter message
6:57 pm
i think it's not just wrong i think it's a dumb scritch. you know i think we've already. like i said joined the club but do you think feingold has any chance of still reminding people of the one who the person has every right to maximize his chance of winning if maximizing your chance of winning means latching on to this law that democrats don't agree with nor to maximize the amount of amount of money that you're getting did not make sense on the other hand you can't have your cake and eat it too you can't have people going straight in saying citizens are citizens united is not constitutional but at the same time we're going to use it in order to get this this is the thing i agree with feingold completely i think that you people can't say you're fighting an ongoing battle so it's not worth fighting i think that if you believe in something it's worth fighting for and just because people don't think that you can succeed doesn't mean that you shouldn't fight for it ask your water fortunately there's just not that many people that are fighting along with you guys thanks so much for joining me tonight have a good weekend and that's it for tonight so thanks for tuning in to the come back
