forced to grow up faster than most kids after losing everything in hurricane katrina his father headed west but their move to the golden state has only lead to poverty unemployment and ultimately homelessness is not a good thing for kids should go should go to zero zero zero not very good i mean a scare when i've been everywhere tokyo is among a growing number of homeless children in los angeles and around the nation last year the department of education reported that there were nearly a million homeless students in america's public schools thirteen thousand students in the l.a. area alone that's more than fifty percent increase in the past five years i was doing counselor i did under my c.s. has seen this many rise in homeless didn't since the housing crash these counties that we have that are homeless in looking for employment we want employment and quite frankly that this is an employment right now. comes home after school to

a shelter which is actually right next to this mega hotel in downtown los angeles where suites run at more than four hundred dollars a night and you can spend the entire day relaxing in the ritz carlton spa the type of luxuries that tokyo and other students in this situation can only dream up and i'm paying. government based so high standard so high play that they don't have the web i don't buy still and i would if you was in a bag put yourself in my shoes can see insecurity that homeless students encounter makes it nearly impossible to succeed in school and move up in economic status a challenge likely to increase as legislators in washington debate making cuts to programs which help our nation's hungry took us father believes the debate is not really considering the people. our suffering on the streets we've got a war we've got a war going to fight of can our american people up on the street tokyo knows who

will get a good lunch at school but having dinner or even having a place to stay at night is always uncertain recall a car a home a park a home and shelter a home the national center on homelessness tested a portion of california's thirty four thousand homeless high school students and found that only nine percent were proficiency at reading and only five percent were profession math a problem which will likely worsen as job losses foreclosures any big sions push more families to the streets it would be no first of the moment because my. new role in this film is this school despite dealing with poverty and discrimination took you'll still dreams of being a basketball player or a musician. no good schools like get some more good than grades or good to me and yes even dreams of being the president of the united

making fun of them for it because it's fascinating to me but i really see it as you know i see it as a cop out i think they don't want to have to cover any real story they think that it's lazy on their part i think it shows what a tiny little new york d.c. bubble they live in but let me get someone else's opinion why do you think that there are just so thralls with this story. what with actually rena particularly. i think the thing ransley. particularly interesting if you've got as you can why not. to read his texts to all these various women is that this is i know this guy met him ten years ago and he's a guy in a real hurry. politically he really wanted to be rare of new york and the interesting is the all these guys is that the closer they get to actually attaining power the more stupid they stupidly they behave in their private life almost like a sort of a game of pool if you will. and his text seemed to be saying to these girls who are

saying you are so great and i loved you on the debate of why debate and he is responding to that and saying yes wasn't i great and i let me show you a photograph of something you might not want to see and i think that in a way the reason this was so compelling was because you saw a man man's ambition and overtake him that you actually saw because you could see the texts that's in a funny way what made it more intriguing. you brought up arnold schwarzenegger i mean the rumors about him the years that it was sort of a train wreck in motion and we were able to see the motion you know the higher he rose the more he exposed himself to falling and i think having. i commented and written an article for vanity fair about this that there is something

about the culture in washington that lends itself to this in a court it hollywood for ugly people and i do. and i do remember about ten years ago being in a room full of young interns male and female mostly democrats and howard wolfson who was then the head of the d.n.c. walked in and i think now howard wilson. you would think brad pitt had walked into that room. people well so the lines of twenty one year olds. to talk to him to chat him up and i wrote a sort of controversial story covering these female in terms on the hill and in all honesty they enable least male politicians to behave like this you know that the mayor politicians wouldn't be able to do this if there were women agreeing to it and i think you know it there i think your point there regularly cut you off for

a second in the sense that yes you know people obviously women young women especially do find themselves attracted to this kind of power to men that are in powerful positions no matter what they look like especially in this town but what do you think it is about the men that specifically often they will just keep lying about it like the anthony weiner is the bill clinton's they'll go on camera and they'll lie about it and they don't think they're going to get caught do they have some kind of a god complex or do you just get stupider as you go along and i have power that you get you know there's more risk taking involve you've written about laval street too in this culture yes but i think we'll see and washington have a similar and they're both bubbles washington has its own culture and so i think the higher that you rise in washington or in will street the more cut off from reality you get and so in d.c. . those cars. capitol hill and you know that are far

more forward than they would be on the street in new york they look you up it you down they say what are you doing for lunch i mean it's happened to me many times and i sort of circle and they say oh senator whatever and. you can't believe the risks that they're taking but they you know the bubble i think they've just completely lost touch with reality that is why in the end most of them have to go it's not because of the sex it's because they have absolutely no idea what the people who elected them are actually thinking why do you think. the same thing with women granted of course there are fewer female politicians in high ranking positions but you don't hear about when the same thing. you there and you know i remember i never forget a quote from i go to diana davis here with one of the entire and she was twenty one year old intern on the hill where i did my piece ten years ago saying to me that she was very busy networking with all the man and she ended up getting going and

saw the obama administration try to make the american people and members of congress look like atheists see upon increasing pressure to provide some answers as to a lot of legal justification the lack of basic details plans and goals for the war in libya the obama administration issued their own a thirty two page report in response out of all the thirty two pages there was a one paragraph one paragraph to try to explain why legally the president didn't need congressional approval to involve those into a war unilaterally and that's where the whole thing just got ugly. their justification is that our involvement does not include the types of hostilities included in the war powers act that's because we don't want troops on the ground because we're not involved in sustained active exchanges of fire with hostile forces the whole gets away for starters the war powers act doesn't differentiate between boots on the ground and firing more than one hundred tomahawk missiles

which if you remember we the u.s. did in the first few days of this war i mean humanitarian intervention you know to try to pretend like you can apply semantics to what's clearly a sustained bombing campaign against moammar gadhafi forces that's a slap in the face the american people know what's going on they also should know that within a couple of weeks the total cost of humanitarian intervening in libya is going to be one billion dollars it should also just be a laughable it is laughable of the administration repeatedly tries to claim within this report that we're slowly involved in libya in a limited role and really nato is the one taking the lead well guess what in that exact same report they detail how the entire campaign would fall apart without us because the u.s. is nato perhaps most frustrating most disturbing is that they're just trying to play games now but the fact that the former constitutional law professor is trying to bend the law to its will that's out of control i mean let's face it this war is

illegal from the start if you want to bring in the war powers act because there was no imminent threat to the united states because it has nothing to do with us so it doesn't matter how many days you count how many ways you twist your words it's a legal plain and simple unless it goes to the courts and they decide otherwise but in the meantime just very the condescension this war is illegal and you know it so just go plead your case to congress if you want to uproot or congress vote against it if you want to end somebody do something so we can stop having a debate about the legality where in reality there is no debate to be had it's not a game so stop treating it like like. ok so it's friday and it's time for happy hour so joining me this evening is r t producer jenny churchill and terry thompson senior editor at the atlantic thanks

confinement for like ten months a choir to go he had to sleep naked at night he was checked out every five minutes they didn't allow him to sleep enjoying a son who is staying and states in england he has to wear. bracelet and he's really complaining. i think it's very slow it was a very i think it's very slow it's chasing that day he was out of control i'm sorry he's like wandering around the town going to the mail i think it went to the post office and it's like he's trapped and come on like you said primly bradley manning and obviously in a much more situation you have no show the jury could find me seems that they're solitary nor terribly confined but at the same time you know he has you know rights to you know have is that the rights respected in it i think it is it's conceivable that you can you can you can question the ways in which he's been treated but at the same time i think that using this way to complain about his commitment might not have been best i don't think i was saying to you before there are a lot of ways that you could point out to make you feel bad for julian

a son i just don't think they chose the right line. all right let's move on to somebody else we've seen one republican politician get glittered because he hates gays and now have two hundred one watch this. very. simple i think a book signing in san francisco i say that he should have known better than going to san francisco where you. i think about the whole glittering thing i think it's kind of fun i like it when i'm with the glitters on the marriage i think that he should have voted for this bill that would have given end of life rights to gay couples and i also sort of with the procedure as well i think there's a good way to make your point it's sparkly it draws a lot of attention obviously we're talking about it right now it also doesn't really cause a mess you know it's not it's not when it's not sticky it's easy to clean or you sad that's it you've made your point now you want to instead of calling it a hate crime we call this a love crime you know it's cozy and cuddly and fighting for and most importantly if

. that's what makes me happy about it that this is something that i think we every single summer we hear a story like this because undoubtedly it happens every single year and well guess what it happens again take a look at this sad sad story of the i didn't i think we can you. hear it. we're. operating a lemonade stand without a permit every kid down to. the register with the county now. another war i'm fine you can't even let a couple little kids that up their own homemade lemonade stand. and these kids are going to donate the money to keep your cancer so i don't really get you the article said so it's. once again on the subject of p.r. not a very good move for this as police well if you want to also that entire news package they butted up with the fact that in the very same neighborhood people are letting people park on their lawns for the p.g.a.

that's in town and are making like thousands of dollars and these little kids are trying to sell lemonade for charity and are getting fined five hundred dollars and after that woman asked you know well does no one allowed to have a lemonade stand the guys like you would take it you know dollars here and there your kids are breaking in the cash if you like. yeah paper charity and the not as much as the people who ran our lives are being successful. yes that's just socialism exactly. lastly this is something that's really that this nation is going on right now and russ feingold who is no longer you know. excuse me a senator lost last time around because he didn't want to join into all of the corporate funding that we saw happen after citizens united ruling by the supreme court and this time around we've covered this story on the show that we've seen

already a lot of these organizations on the left wing they also have these nice flowery names. and some of them for some reason they're not coming to my head right now but basically they take money from undisclosed donors and you have no idea where the money's coming from so if you can't just you know join up but russ feingold is trying to fight that let's think of ways that. really goes kind of super pacs for democrats is wrong it is not something we should do i disagree luser sure when it comes to your sure. what gutter message i think it's not just wrong i think it's a scritch. you know i think they've already kind of lost their soul because like i said they are joining the club but do you think buying gold has any chance of still reminding people who don't have a person has every right to maximize the chance of winning if maximizing your chance of winning means letting on to this law that democrats don't agree with in order to maximize the amount of amount of money you're getting to not make sense on the other hand you can't have your cake and eat it too you can't have people going straight and saying citizens citizens united is not
