11:31 pm
at least the republican party i think is divided i don't know i think i think that a lot of it is is more rhetoric than actual you see that you feel that house of representatives vote to cut specific military spending item most of the republicans some of the republicans together with most of the democrats so there is so much action going on now i think the democrats are just as bad as the republicans on this one it's you know something that i constantly repeat on the show which is that we get a solution that they're so divided and so polarized but when it comes to expanding the security state of the surveillance state that no problem and thanks so much for being here thank you. all right still ahead tonight the stressful life of celebrity a popular web site is trying to help celebrities who blogs at the new service will give you more on that tonight still time award and then we'll talk about sex and politics. powerful positions always feel invincible when it comes to their sex scandals or diving is not just for the. wealthy british soil it's time to.
11:32 pm
market. find out what's really happening to the global economy is a report on our. own again this is the headline. russia's economy must modernize as president dmitri medvedev pledges drastic measures to create a better investment climate in the country speaking of the international economic forum in st petersburg he also warns that corruption and excessive state influence in business and trade threaten the country's development. is congressman born of funding for the even campaign saying of bally's acting illegally seeking full approval to extend american military involvement possibly ninety days the white house however denies. needs permission from the capitol hill. under
11:33 pm
a new wave of protests in syria. to lose a round of sanctions against the country germany and france meanwhile say they will put pressure on russia and china to support the new resolution on syria with great experience part of a buildup put another style intervention. those are the headlines that let's not go back to the i don't know shy in our washington studio. it's time for tonight's tool time award and it goes to arianna huffington the woman who made three hundred fifteen million dollars after selling huffington post to a.o.l. earlier this year has decided to add a new feature to the website that she still runs now offers a blog concierge service now you might be asking what the hell's that arianna says
11:34 pm
the service is for busy celebrities who just don't have time to sit down to write a blog so they can call it and dictate a blog to an editor over the phone and then the blog just magically appears on the site are you serious ari i mean come on most celebrities are spoiled rotten ego driven maniacs who have their every need it catered to so why they need a blog a concierge service if they're going to write something that they want the public to read should they actually be required to write the damn thing i wonder if our own is going to pay these celebrity bloggers as we've discussed on the show before she doesn't pay most of the hard working men and women who actually made her site popular not at all but that got us thinking today which lebanese would probably sign up for the blog concierge service we think it will i am is a good candidate he's too busy to write his own blog because really hard being for a backup singer and let's face it obama's poll numbers are weak so he's going to have to write a new song to help him keep him in the white house and we're not really sure if we'll i am might be hologram ing in for c.n.n.
11:35 pm
during next year's presidential election. we're joined now in hologram with by. who is live in grant park but you know no. there we go well thanks very much for being with us how was this night for you. this is great you know we're ready. a brand new day in america and it feels good being here in chicago. all this technology like a star wars stuff. yeah that was probably one of the most ridiculous moments on t.v. ever but anyway here's your chance to pretend like you have something politically potent to say but just let someone else do the work for you now who else might make the list obviously arnold schwarzenegger is a busy man these days sally's got two families to take care of and he's trying to restart his movie career so maybe he's going to use the blog concierge service now offered although he's not the governor anymore doesn't really mean that he has to
11:36 pm
start doing his own writing good lord now then at lindsay low and must be signing up for the block concierge service she's still busy these days between court hearings community service where she offered to teach acting to homeless women and visiting the probation office but she simply just doesn't have enough time to do it all and write down a blog about how hard or how hard it is to resist drugs when you're overpaid white girl so those are just the three celebrities that we think should probably sign up for the huffington post news service now if you can't tell we're obviously kidding here because i think a blog concierge service for busy celebrities as a joke maybe we stop letting so many celebrities express their political views unless they actually know what they're talking about maybe they don't depend on a concierge service to air their dirty laundry that's what your p.r. agents for and that's why arianna huffington who is now offering the service is tonight's told time where. now president obama has always claimed that he's devoted to education and his work to keep america competitive but the struggling economy a lot of those students have put their educational goals on hold all they help
11:37 pm
their family get by california is a perfect example of this problem as two million kids are living in poverty and thirteen percent of them are homeless lindo take us to los angeles to share the story of one boys working hard to save his family and is education. i want to pass the bill to fourteen years old man he says i gotta try to tokyo palmer has been forced to grow up faster than most kids after losing everything in hurricane katrina he and his father headed west but their move to the golden state has only led to poverty unemployment and ultimately homelessness is not a good thing for a kid to should go should go to you know at all and i mean good because i mean us care what i've been everywhere tokyo is among the growing number of homeless children in los angeles and around the nation last year the department of education reported that there were nearly a million homeless students in america's public schools thirteen thousand students
11:38 pm
in the l.a. area alone that's more than fifty percent increase in the past five years i was doing counselor i don't handle much yes has seen this steady rise in homeless students since the housing crash these families that we have that are homeless they're looking for employment they want employment and quite frankly that just isn't employment right now. comes home after school to a shelter which is actually right next to this mega hotel in downtown los angeles where suites run at more than four hundred dollars a night and you can spend the entire day relaxing in the ritz carlton spa the type of luxuries that tokyo and other students in this situation can only dream up and i banged. on a government base so high standards so high planted that they don't have the web i don't buy still and i would if you want to know put yourself in my shoes the concert insecurity that homeless students encounter makes it nearly impossible to
11:39 pm
succeed in school and move up in economic status a challenge likely to increase as legislators in washington debate making cuts to programs which help our nation's hungry tokyo's father believes the debate is not really considering that people. our suffering on the streets we've got a war right we have a war without a fight of getting our american people up on the street tokyo knows who will get a good lunch at school but having dinner or even having a place to stay at night is always uncertain we call a car a home a park a home and shelter home the national center on homelessness tested a portion of california's thirty four thousand homeless high school students and found that only nine percent were profession at reading and only five percent were profession math a problem which will likely worsen as job losses foreclosures and even actions push more families to destry pts toward me do you know for most of the moment because
11:40 pm
my secret to getting to know all of this woman is this school despite dealing with poverty and discrimination talk you'll still dreams of being a basketball player or a musician you know when it is no go to school slack get some more good than grades up good to me. and yes he even dreams of being the president of the united states until he reaches high office he has a message for those who are in power now he gave them money to different people but you have chosen an asshole if. you know and your state. and your eyes you can help them out. far from the corridors of power and ideological battles challenge expressed with the clarity of childhood to the nation's elite in los angeles but i'm a little. all right so for the last two weeks of nonstop wiener fever
11:41 pm
i've been bashing the media as you well know over the over the top incessant coverage that is blocked out every other story and i still fully stand by every single set statement that i've made but the thing is it's not like we are gay in itself is some singular phenomenon we see this happen all the time it almost seems like politicians and sex scandals become synonymous with larry craig's david bitters eliot spitzer as anthony weiner as dominique strauss kahn is of the world too of course everyone's favorite cheater. i want you to listen and i'm going to say this again. i did not have sexual relations with that woman miss lewinsky. i never told anybody to lie not a single time never these allegations for fall and i need to go back to work for the american. so what is it about men in powerful positions that makes them do such stupid things and why don't we see female politicians doing the same joining
11:42 pm
me from our studio in new york is vicky ward contributing editor of vanity fair and author of the book the devil's casino friendship betrayal and the high stakes games played inside lehman brothers thank you thank you so much for joining us tonight like i said i've been there are a ling and railing about this story and making fun of the media for the last two weeks and the way that they're obsessed with it and i have to admit i'm a little obsessed with making fun of them for it because it's fascinating to me but i really see it as you know i see it as a cop out i think if they don't want to have to cover any real stories i think that it's lazy on their part i think it shows what a tiny little new york d.c. bubble they live in but let me get someone else's opinion why do you think that they're just so in thrall that this story. well with actually rena particularly. i think the thing. that's particularly interesting if you've followed as you try not. to read his texts to all these various women is
11:43 pm
that this is i know this guy i've met him ten years ago and he's a guy in a real hurry politically he really wanted to be married in new york and the interesting is the goes for all these guys is that the closer they get to actually attaining power the more stupid they stupidly they behave in their private life it's almost like a sort of a game of if you will you know and his text seemed to be saying to these girls who were saying you were so great and why i loved you in the debate and why debate and he is responding to that and saying yes wasn't i great and now let me show you a photograph of something in my own mind or see. and i think that in a way the reason this was so compelling was because you saw him on. ambition and overtake him that you actually saw because you could see the texts that's in a funny way what made it more intriguing. you brought up
11:44 pm
arnold schwarzenegger i mean i've been rumors about him for years but i was the we were sort of a train wreck in motion and we were able to see the motion. the higher he rose the more he exposed himself to falling and i think having. commented and written an article for vanity fair about this that there is something about the culture in washington that lends itself to this i mean they called it hollywood for ugly people. and i do remember about ten years ago being in a room full of young interns male and female mostly democrats and howard wolfson who was then the head of the d.n.c. walked in and i you would think. you would think brad pitt had walked into that room. people went so. of twenty one year olds.
11:45 pm
to talk to him to chat him up and i wrote a sort of controversial story covering these female in terms on the hill and in all honesty they enable these male politicians to behave like this. that. wouldn't be able to do this if they were women agreeing to it and i think you know it there i think of a point there regularly coming off for a second in the sense that yes you know people obviously women young women especially do find themselves attracted to this kind of power to men that are in powerful positions no matter what they look like especially in this town but what do you think it is about the men that specifically often they will just keep lying about it like the anthony weiner is in the bill clinton's they'll go on camera and a lie about it they don't think they're going to get caught do they have some kind of a god complex or do you just get stupider as you go along and i have power that you get you know there's more risk taking involved you've written about lot of wall
11:46 pm
street too in this culture yes but i think we'll see and washington have a similar and they're both bubbles washington has its own culture and so i think that. in washington or in will street the more cut off from reality you get and so in d.c. you know i. capitol hill and you know. far more forward than they would be on the street in new york they look you up it you down they say what are you doing for lunch i mean it's happened to me many times this is central and they say oh senator whatever you are you can't believe the risks that they're taking but they you know the bubble i think they've just completely lost touch with reality that is why in the end most of them have to go it's not because of the sex it's because they have absolutely no idea what the people who elected them are actually thinking why do you think that i don't you know the same thing
11:47 pm
with women granted of course there are fewer female politicians in such high ranking positions but you don't hear about women same thing. you don't and you know what i remember i never forget a quote from a girl called diana davis who was one of the entire and she was twenty one year old intern on the hill when i did my piece ten years ago saying to me that she was very busy networking with older man and she ended up getting going and lot of important senators and lobbyists. congressman but she didn't bother with the women said no that would about work. i'm kind of a sudden ole i thought of. that you know the women work that's one of the reasons why you know i think that it's really tough to succeed as a woman and politics because you have to act a bit yeah you know there's a lot of already out to do you know actually roll up their sleeves began want to thank you very much for joining us but it's something that i guess will continue to
11:48 pm
fascinate us because i'm sure that is the final political sex scandal that any of us will see thanks so much and thank you. all still to come tonight we have a fireside friday and then our last happy hour of the week another presidential candidate gets glitter and join us on just complaining about his home confinement all while living in a large english estate back in just a moment. more
11:49 pm
than a mile of. one of the most extreme environments on the planet this is antarctica and people have to be aware that they are far away from civilization. problems discovers flood makes antarctica so special and attractive for many wildlife and sorts of goodies you leave in the flood zone. expedition to the bottom of your arctic. to tonight's fireside fridays be your hooves and cops. this week we
11:50 pm
saw the obama administration try to make the american people and members of congress look like idiots is the upon increasing pressure to provide some answers as to lack of legal justification the lack of basic details plans and goals for the war in libya the obama administration issued their own thirty two page report in response to all the thirty two pages there was one paragraph one paragraph that tried to explain why legally the president didn't need congressional approval to involve us into a war unilaterally and that's where the whole thing just got ugly see their justification is that our involvement does not include the types of hostilities included in the war powers act that's because we don't have troops on the ground because we're not involved in sustained active exchanges of fire with hostile forces hold guess what for starters the war powers act doesn't differentiate between boots on the ground and firing more than one hundred tomahawk missiles which if you remember we the us did in the first two days of this war i mean
11:51 pm
humanitarian intervention you know to try to pretend like you can apply semantics to what's clearly a sustained bombing campaign. again against moammar gadhafi forces that's just slap in the face the american people know what's going on they also should know that within a couple of weeks the total cost of humanitarian intervening in libya is going to be one billion dollars it should also just be a laughable it is laughable that the administration repeatedly tries to claim within this report that we're soley involved in libya in a limited role and really nato is the one taking the lead well guess what in that exact same report they detail how the entire campaign would fall apart without us because the u.s. is nato but perhaps most frustrating most disturbing is that well they're just trying to play games now but the fact that the former constitutional law professor is trying to bend the law to its will that's out of control i mean let's face it this war was illegal from the start if you want to bring in the war powers act because there was no imminent threat to the united states because it has nothing to
11:52 pm
do with us so it doesn't matter how many days you count how many ways you twist your words it's illegal plain and simple unless it goes to the courts and they decide otherwise but in the meantime just spare me the condescension this war is illegal and you know it so just go plead your case to congress if you want the pruett or congress voting against it if you want to end somebody do something so we can stop having a debate about the legality where in reality there is no debate to be had it's not a game so stop treating it like one. ok so it's friday and it's time for happy hour so joining me this evening is our two producer jenny threw a chill and derek thompson senior editor at the atlantic thanks for joining me guys now obviously we. don't have any senior editor of the atlantic i don't
11:53 pm
congratulation thank you very much a big deal is that i'm sorry it's totally glossed over that jim thanks for pointing that out. well something that we talk about on the show all the time obviously doing a song on the u.s. government's war against whistleblowers but in the meantime a sign drizzy an england and he's on house arrest but it's not like he said in a jail cell but apparently he has some complaints take a look. to see the regime he's a good thing to have this sort of braces on you that you can take all. your electronically imprisoned i mean this is a man that hasn't even been charged and he's being treated like a caged animal. my problem with this you know i like we can lead this nation and i support what they do but they bradley manning he had to sit in solitary confinement for like ten months at quantico he had to sleep naked at night he was checked out every five minutes they didn't allow him to sleep in joining us
11:54 pm
on just staying and states in england he has to wear. bracelets he's really complaining portugal's i think it's bracelet was i think is very slow is chafing that day he that was out of control i'm sorry he's like wandering around the town going to the mail i think it went to the post office then it psyche's trapped and come on like you said grimly bradley manning is obviously in a much worse situation you know there's no show the jury could find the scenes that are solitary nor terribly confined but at the same time you know he has rights to have a cigarette respected in it and i think it is it's conceivable that you can you can you can question the ways in which he's been treated but at the same time i think that using this way to complain about a statement might not have been the best p.r. move i don't think i was saying to you before there are a lot of ways that you could point out to make you feel bad for julian a son i just don't think they chose the right line. all right let's move on to
11:55 pm
somebody else we've seen one republican politician get glittered because he hates gays and now i happen to another one watch this. there is. a very. simple answer in a book signing in san francisco i say that he should've known better than going to san francisco but what do you think about the whole glittering thing i think it's kind of fun i like it when i'm with the glitters on the marriage i think that he should have voted for this bill that would have given end of life rights to gay couples and i also sort of with the procedure as well i think glitter is a good way to make your point it's sparkly it draws a lot of attention obviously we're talking about it right now it also doesn't really cause a mess you know it's not it's not wet it's not sticky it's easy to clean and i just . said you've made your point and i think you want to instead of calling it a hate crime we call this a love crime you know it's cozy and cuddly and you know fighting for blood and most importantly if. that's of makes me happy about it that this is something that i
11:56 pm
think we every single summer we hear a story like this because undoubtedly it happens every single year and well guess what it happens again take a look at this sad sad story of the i don't know i think we can you know the money to charity. dollars for. operating a lemonade stand without a permit every kid down there. to register with the county around. another war i'm fine you can't even let a couple little kids set up their own homemade lemonade stand. and these kids are going to donate the money to a pediatric cancer center i don't think it should be article said so it's. once again on the subject of p.r. not a very good move for this police as well if you want also that entire news package they butted up with the fact that in the very same neighborhood people are letting people park on their lawns for the p.g.a. that's in town and they're making like down thousands of dollars and these little
11:57 pm
kids are trying to sell lemonade for charity and are getting fined five hundred dollars and after that woman asked you know well does no one allowed to have a lemonade stand the guys like you take it you know dollars here and there your kids are raking in the cash like. a for charity and being not as much as the people who ran our lives were being successful. saturday that's just socialism exactly. the last only this is something that's right netroots nation is going on right now and russ feingold who is no longer. excuse me a set of their lost last time around because he didn't want to join into all of the corporate funding that we saw happen after citizens united ruling by the supreme court and this time around we've covered this story on the show too we've seen already a lot of these organizations on the left wing they also have these nice flowery
11:58 pm
names are forgetting some of them for some reason they're not coming to my head right now but basically they take money from undisclosed donors and you have no idea where that money is coming from so it's not like if you can't just you know join up but russ feingold is trying to fight back let's take a look at what he said creating those kind of super pacs for democrats is wrong it is not something we should do i disagree lose our soul when it comes to the issue of corporate domination what got her message i think it's not just wrong i think it's a dumb strategy. you know i think they've already kind of lost their soul because like i said they are joined the club but do you think feingold has any chance of still reminding people well i'm the one who the person has every right to maximize his chance of winning and if maximizing your chance of winning means letting on to this law that democrats don't agree with an order to maximize the amount of amount of money that you're getting them that makes sense on the other hand you can't have your cake and eat it too you can't have people ministration saying citizens citizens united is not constitutional but at the same time we're going to use it in order to get that million dollars this is the thing i agree with completely i think
11:59 pm
that you people can't say you're fighting a non-winning battle so it's not worth fighting i think that if you believe in something it's worth fighting for and just because people don't think that you can succeed doesn't mean that you shouldn't fight for it ask your wod fortunately there's just not that many people that are fighting along with you guys thanks so much for joining me tonight have a good weekend and that's it for tonight's show thanks for tuning in make sure you come back on monday jake. brewer and christine friends al be back for another dollar happy hour and meantime deprecates become a fan of the a lot of show on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed any of the night's or any other nights you can always catch it all the you tube dot com flash the show you have next is adam vs the man. through a substantial degree and one form or another socialism has spread the shadow of human regimentation over most of the nations of the earth and the shadow is an

approaching a little different. in the early twenty first century military bases the network of military bases all around the forms of believe. that the united states is trying to build that's astonishing most americans have no idea there are more than a quarter of a million or more than two hundred fifty thousand u.s. troops stationed on these bases all around the world. we don't have fallen bases in america we don't have any british base we don't have any korean base we don't have any french bases or you know we just all american bases in the in the last i want bases of. of the noise is our north as it doesn't bother us at all because they're all bases but for other people it's almost like a cancer here for these people. since the in the world war two the spaces of the.
