as to the charge of first degree murder verdict as to count one we the jury find the defendant not guilty a not so guilty pleasure for the mainstream media but shouldn't it just be case closed at this point. what lessons do you see or to be drawn from the way the us legal system handled this restaurant case welcome to serve to live guard where the new i.m.f. chief have to balance her job with the d.s. k. case so why isn't the mainstream media asking if she can tame the world's thinking economies instead. and the white house is all a twitter with obama's town hall earlier today but could social media reach

a character limit when it comes to privacy. plus ready aim and fire a new television ad puts a target on gun rights and wrongs the debate. good evening it's wednesday july sixth eight pm here in washington d.c. i'm laurin lister in your watching our t.v. well yesterday the casey anthony saga that is compelled never ending coverage on some mainstream news stations came to a climax when a verdict was delivered take a listen. we the jury find the defendant not guilty a stunning. jaw dropping moment this is a historic rejection of the prosecution's case. she wakes up thinking i could face lethal injection tonight she's thinking i'm going to be free probably in forty eight hours i don't think i was wrong i still
8:02 pm
believe that ok when older two year old child a historic rejection as one person said it inspired analysis i heard and the afternoon and evening and it has over the past months in fact a smart politics study of transcripts from c.n.n. and fox and the same d.c. a.b.c. and n.p.r. found that more news reports mention the casey anthony trial at least one time more than any of the republican presidential candidates since opening statements were delivered may twenty fourth and today the pressure day you know we thought that verdict behind maybe this saga will be put to rest on cable news well think again. somewhere around there. the devil is dancing tonight this was a good mother you see. consumer spending acquitted of killing her two year old daughter people across the web are comparing it to o.j. simpson if you believe casey's lies or was this just orchestrates it's
8:03 pm
a sad day for the criminal justice system i believe. now will casey anthony has become a household name with all of the attention her case has gotten i wonder if most people have ever heard of another mother in the united states accused of killing her baby ready gives this case is in mississippi gives became pregnant at fifteen she lost the baby at thirty six weeks she had a miscarriage that was in two thousand and six the baby was stillborn prosecutors though found out that this mother had a cocaine how they and charged the girl under a one hundred thirty year old statute one hundred thirty years old that is cold craved heart murder filed when someone is suspected of putting another person in imminent danger of death now if convicted under this law gives faces a mandatory life sentence and she is the first woman in mississippi to be charged with murder relating to the loss of an unborn baby now this was argued before the state supreme court and we're still waiting on the decision but it's one that could
8:04 pm
have a huge effect on the rest of the country unlike casey anthony which has an effect on casey anthony and i'm sure her family and i guess the people who have been obsessed with her fate and i'm sure the cable news that have benefited from the writings so why is gives not being covered or talked about every day and every hour that casey anthony has been or even a teeny tiny fraction of that and that's the question we're asking as this verdict has come down in this trial that the nation has been completely obsessed with meanwhile over at the international monetary fund the new head of the i.m.f. christine lagarde held her first press conference on her second day at work now this comes at every. very important time by all accounts just as moody's cut portugal's bonds to junk and warns the country may need a second bailout this is falling even lower rated greece where the second bailout for that country being talked about but why did r.t.s. for stanford our fight a lot of people wanted to ask lagarde about instead the sex scandal circumstances
8:05 pm
surrounding her predecessor. they look. some violence on the streets of the middle east coast. to protest in north africa. war in libya. to europe. for portugal's credit rating has been deemed junk. in greece. where unemployment hovers at about sixteen percent and the debt crisis has sparked anger. in ireland of blanket of despair as people there too have come out to speak out in hopes of igniting change entire cities as well as their policies have been lit up in flames but really all of this anger stemming from poverty and failed economic policies in the u.s.
8:06 pm
as well high unemployment sits atop a mountain of problems like housing prices and slow financial growth. this is the world christine legarde inherits as she begins at her new post as managing director of the international monetary fund and her first formal meeting with the press at the i.m.f. headquarters in washington she seemed optimistic in her hopes to get the country back on track the international monetary fund is here to serve and to provide services to its hundred and eighty seven members it's not those that feel good news story but still the inaugural press conference for the new managing director of the i.m.f. then garnered quite a bit of media attention most likely and have less to do with christine lagarde herself and more to do with the reason why she's here. inside the room cameras and tripods stood like soldiers guarding the entrance of a castle keeping close watch and wondering aloud about what guards predecessor what
8:07 pm
lessons do you think or to be drawn from the way the u.s. legal system to handle this trial is fine case will be any reforms in the human rights and human resources policies here do you plan any changes in them in light of the controversy over mr strauss kahn the controversy of course with dominique strauss kahn accused of raping a hotel maid in new york that case now starting to crumble after it turned out the maid had credibility problems but back to the i.m.f. we're looking hard will take over let me ask you about a couple of issues what worries you the most guarded her best to stay on message we cannot be only driven by the hope to reduce fiscal deficits and organize fiscal consolidation in a big way whether you look at advanced economies or whether you look at emerging markets or low income countries the issue of employment. is
8:08 pm
a critical one the one hundred eighty seven nation organization has already lent a hundred and sixty billion dollars to cash strapped nations many of which have little hope for paying it back. so the real questions are manifested here on the streets of some of the nation suffering the most are accepting aid from the i.m.f. has been presented at times as the only option as a series of measures are now being put into place the questions too are in the dollar and how its value may or may not change under her watch for managing the debt crisis around the world will fall at the top of her agenda as the rest of the world watches this hope first ability in an unstable world in washington christine for sound r.t. . and from international debt to the national debate the us is less than a month away from defaulting on its debt that's if lawmakers can't get
8:09 pm
a deal done to raise the fourteen point three trillion dollar debt ceiling now to get down to the wire for u.s. lawmakers to break the stalemate over deficit reduction and the debt ceiling it's the eve of more debt talks obama yesterday invited the top leaders from both parties to the white house tomorrow to try to move towards an agreement he is calling for a longer term solution to the country's deficit not a short term solution still despite the failed me. in congress who want to do just enough to make sure that america avoids defaulting on our debt in the short term but then wants to kick the can down the road when it comes to solving the larger problem of our deficit. i don't share that view but is this kind of a solution even possible or a lawmaker is going to continue what some have called a game of chicken with the u.s. economy which is past many deadlines for raising the debt ceiling for more on this i spoke earlier with katrina vanden heuvel she's editor and publisher of the nation
8:10 pm
magazine i asked her who she held responsible for what she's telling it is the debt ceiling the after effects on capitol hill here's her take. you know i hold the structural obstacles of our system responsible but mostly at this stage republican party or it has failed to understand that unless we achieve until it is one of shared prosperity that includes increased tax revenues and not just spending cuts we're never going to get anywhere in terms of. a strong america so i think when i wrote this up or the other day about the fourteenth amendment it is in our constitution that president obama couldn't go article four of the fourteenth amendment to say that this steps that stealing is unconstitutional it is a tool in the toolkit to have leverage as we face an increasingly obstructionist extremist republican party unwilling to consider tax increases on the richest i'm
8:11 pm
corporations on those who've taken their money or car and so i think that's where i would place them and on so then why haven't we seen president obama make a move like you're saying and instead we saw him yesterday call for al long term deal to majorly tackle the deficit as opposed to just getting beth a debt ceiling raised and getting it done well you can't get the debt ceiling raised if you have no what can go in the republican party isn't willing at this stage to grow any kind of compromise so i think where president obama is trying to do is keep this idea of the constitutional amendment in the backdrop as leverage in this game of chicken to i think president obama we use it unlikely in light of the kind of leadership we've seen from him he has confrontation of course i do think it's useful though because as i said earlier and as some republican commentators have argued in his last days this is not a normal republican party this is
8:12 pm
a republican party unwilling to make any kind of compromise because it is unwilling to see that you can't have a healthy industrializing advanced country we. increasing taxes on the very richest who would benefit the most one of the politics of this it may be that we will see a president trying to avert a crisis or it will increase the global instability we just saw in that footage that would increase the pain in this country leaving more financial institutions to collapse more pitches to collapse more unemployed so i would say we don't know i would say never say never because we are living in uncharted times we see that across this globe in ways that we have not anticipated and in this country we have a system which many feel is not working is not working for everyone though the rich may think it's working for them we're not seeing a country that is pulling together and doing the things we need to do we are
8:13 pm
sitting watching silly trials we're failing to invest in an infrastructure that is deteriorating and we're not doing the politics to rebuild it some like to think of as the american dream right i'm curious if you think first of all that it's inappropriate for our politicians to be playing a game of chicken over something like the debt ceiling which many argue could derail the entire global financial system do you agree with that but it's sort of i mean i think it's very self-serving it's provincial of these people particularly the rip it's the republicans at this stage the democrats have me come from isis and they're willing to make compromises some of which i would disagree with many i work with would disagree millions would say don't cut like that it care to give it more tax breaks why are you cutting funding for unnecessary budgets so i think it is selfishness but look all hostage taking the global financial situation hold hostage the financial economic fate of this country and millions in it but at the
8:14 pm
same time you see democrats you've seen president obama and every time he is the talking point over the corporate jet tax for example. you know and saying that that's something that is really important needs to happen but the white house can't even quantify what that would save some say would only be you know three billion dollars over ten years which really isn't much when you're looking to cut trillions of dollars so isn't everybody kind of guilty of playing politics in a situation like this no i think some are more guilty of playing politics than others because you know we're looking at a country or where the tax burden for the very richest is the lowest it has been in decades we're looking at a republican party that believes you can cut your way to recovery or prosperity we're looking at a republican party that has been unrelated to consent or any kind of revenue producing increase in this agreement just to wonder what people in the democratic party have said ok fifty percent revenue fifty percent cuts that's you know
8:15 pm
fairness in my view fifty fifty let's make a deal i may not agree with that but that's out on the table republicans have refused the republicans are even adding a little gimmicks that the long hoped for like a balanced budget amendment if this moment in this negotiation. do you think this all takes away the debate over the over the debt or that feeling something as many think many theists jeff happen if you take away from a broader debate on many of the things you're talking about investing investing in jobs something that many argue is really what needs to happen the whole debate here skewed i'm reminded about listening to who i am a director christine lagarde who i think very carefully and eloquently tried to say don't forget she heartlessness if we're going to recover we need to boost demand how do you goose demand when best in the country in the short term you allow short term deficits in order to have a. recovery this thinking is on the radar except among
8:16 pm
a group of democrats but even then it democrats have bought into this idea that we that we have a crisis with the deficit we don't have a crisis we don't. bankrupt crisis is joblessness the crisis is a bankruptcy of economic. and savvy in this country and we need to we set economic to pay before we can have the policies we need in the short term we're faced with what we have and i pick up on europe good question that some are playing really kind of the line politics there's an argument in this country right now more republican party opposed to president obama understand that but are they now in a position where they really want to tank purpose economy. increase their chances of coming to power in the white house it's not a healthy debate but one has to raise it in light of what we've seen from republicans who are not acting in the interests of this country well that is
8:17 pm
a million dollar question that we're going to leave our viewers with we certainly thank you for your analysis that was katrina vanden heuvel editor and publisher of the nation magazine and as obama tries to get a deal on the debt done any questions he answered today on the economy were not at a press conference but over twitter he held a twitter town hall starting it by live tweeting saying he believes the first president ever do so he asked the club look for their input he said order to reduce the deficit what costs would you cut and what investments would you keep whether he really takes any of that input into account. who knows but he is relying on twitter for this town hall the very same week that fox news reportedly had its account hacked with tweets claiming president obama had been assassinated now at this point both the house socially and the socially driven social social media driven our world has become but also how in this world oftentimes anything goes when it comes to social media and for more on this i spoke with declan mccullagh he is a correspondent for c.n.n.
8:18 pm
news and i asked him as facebook continues to span seven hundred million users i asked him whether he believes reports that point to a potential facebook for lack lying here is we have to say. well i mean you eventually reach the point of diminishing returns. has been phenomenal but there's a limit to how much you can do that you're into this law of large numbers you can't keep growing by percent in perpetuity and that every pretty much everyone who wants to be on facebook right now at least in the u.s. is on facebook and they haven't proven themselves very well or put another way they've made a lot of missteps over the years in terms of privacy because if you look at the callow the the information was originally private but people post or that it's growing every year it seems more and more and ever widening circles available to the general public. made some missteps some are intentional and i can some are probably intentional missteps all they just make things more public and they annoy
8:19 pm
users which is why google plus is getting a lot of attention right now some are predicting that facebook's hype will fade and one writer says that we're seeing the beginning of the ad and he cites the decline without my space he says that goldman sachs facebook investment is a sign of facebook cashing out do you agree with that. maybe there is so much because we just don't have all the figures so we don't know much about facebook's internals they're not large enough in terms of the number of investors we're getting close though by the end of the early probably will be so they actually have to disclose their finances and so we're struggling with a black box in some cases but we know that some companies just seem to have this ability to print money google microsoft out for a look at this isn't period of the same level of the profitability is really low for the times the valuations we're hearing thinking around like be under one
8:20 pm
hundred billion so i suspect that if. you're not convinced that you're going to that you're going to be able to produce the type of profits that google microsoft out will do and you're going to want to cash out as quickly as possible you're in there for more in fact your bubble ok now you mentioned some of kind of the issues are surrounding privacy and some of the ad that more people have made their information private i'm curious because a group of internet intellectual property law professors and they wrote a letter to members of congress opposing the protect ip act and this would give the government new powers to take web sites offline to censor search engines to internet publishers accused of infringing activities should people be more concerned about what they are putting on social media when you have acts like this that are you know being contemplated. martin i think there really are two separate topics and the first is intellectual property and copyright matter what the perfect be at which point we don't have many laws those law professors in the letter that
8:21 pm
went out earlier this week are probably right and then there's a second question of. facebook it has changed the defaults over the years to make things that are only private and i don't really want to just simply be private. and twitter was always pretty much in so you can learn surprise on twitter now google launched google plus last week it's actually pretty interesting i spent some time poking around i was going to bob a month or so and you can look at those you say these are friends these are family these recall workers these are. both directly with but so are all of the new these are just acquaintances maybe these are people who are part of my whatever club i belong to at school or at work and so you can only segregate things that makes me privacy with your outside of broadcasting baby photos of all of these are going through so i think that's the next trend and we're seeing facebook kind of scramble to catch up to what google is doing now something
8:22 pm
earlier today that was probably not as i'm in terms of video conferencing that's probably not as good as what google announced last week as declan mccullagh correspondent for the net now last month had a spokesman adam gadahn appeared in a video urging followers to exploit us laws to attack enemies of islam. in the worst you've got a lot at your disposal let's take america as an example america is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms you can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle with all the background check and most likely without having to show an identification card so what are you waiting for. then it will guns right back because it argued this is the case that new york mayor michael bloomberg exploited that video to push his gun policy agenda here's a little bit of that. the latest now kind of plot instructs terrorists on the bike
8:23 pm
guns in america so what are you waiting for. all your member of congress tell them to close the loopholes that let terrorists and criminals barred guns and we wanted to take the opportunity to exploit the subject for our own use to have a debate over gun rights and gun control in the u.s. so earlier i spoke with our own adam koch ashleigh's host of adam vs the man i asked him what's so wrong with mayor bloomberg another is fighting to close loopholes that keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them here's his response. well there's nothing wrong with having a legitimate debate about that policy but to say here's something that we can make people really afraid about and we can leverage politically and exploit it to push our agenda you know that really lowers the debate because there's no logic there's no rationale behind this we can't have a reasonable conversation with and say what actually leads to better reality from gun control policies what leads to worse effect in terms of making people prone to
8:24 pm
attack criminals are less able to defend themselves or more money wasted in the government bureaucracy that's ultimately completely futile and being able to have that discussion is very important and i don't mind being able to say like well let's have a rational discussion about the state of gun control right now but to say let's start with the very very afraid because the terrorists are going to come get you well then let me ask you this what do you take away from that video of adam gadahn but what alarms you about that well it's alarming in the sense that. it's another excuse and it gives people like mayor bloomberg and if you suppose that in any time there's a tragedy nothing about exactly where actual video concerns you as someone who is a gun enthusiast and does firmly believe and second i'm not right that video doesn't alarm you at all well it does concern me in and of itself but you know i'm from new mexico and in new mexico i open carry everywhere i go and that's a great benefit of living in a state where i have more freedom than i do here in the district of columbia so if you if you live in a city where you're not allowed to arms are allowed allows on farms and you're already completely dependent on the government for your own protection then yeah it
8:25 pm
would be cause to be afraid but you shouldn't be afraid that your own or concerned that someone is taking advantage of you for being disarmed but that there's a massive government effort to keep people disarmed and disempowered and keep these rights away from us despite our founders gustavus protect them and the constitution ok so you're talking about gun rights that when it comes to guns i want to ask if there's more at stake than just gun rights i want to run a video but you may have made the difference because i want to feel like i want to clarify when you said it i haven't had the real reaction to. the the al qaeda video no i mean i do i think for the same reason that anytime there's a tragedy involving a firearm you know it's not just a tragedy in itself but it's a tragedy or potentially a greater tragedy as the fear from it you know like the four year old who was shot in in baltimore on on independence day this past weekend or you know i mean any any shooting that shouldn't have to occur you know makes you know i feel that and i'm
8:26 pm
affected by it not just because of the tragedy in and of itself and and yes there is an emotional sort of tragedy about it a bit this al qaeda video points out that you know hey because we have firearms rights to a very limited group here in the united states there's an opportunity for them to be used against us but the logical fallacy behind that is like well if americans are able to breathe the air you know we should cut off air because of the terrorist won't be able to breathe or they're going to kill people guns do when they kill about one of us don't kill people law enforcement officers kill people oh look i'm not in the sky or you have a chilling european eight times more likely to be killed by a police officer by terrorists ok let's talk about people that have been killed by police officer says this is a video that we ran when this home a video came out i think you did take a day of a swat team killing young marine in a town let's run a little bit out of it i can see it. so
8:27 pm
they bang down a door they shot off seventy one rounds the part you don't see is this guy was in his home and he was pointing an air fifteen at the cop allegedly allegedly because we've already seen so many law rights law i get that you know the love you've been ok please let go of it like that is what eventually led to cleaning and they are kicking out the police i granted that perhaps he is allowed to do that by law but if he wasn't pointing an air fifteen at those police when they banged on his door do you think he would be alive but again instead of making the case from reason this is a case based on a single incident and i'm just reactionary it's because i think one of the our at the moment you look at it was another really protect yourself but in this case did having a gun is that what contributed to him being killed there while the cops had more guns and none of them know that he was like the lobsters and we're all right i don't know because you know think about the oscar grant shooting thing where he was face down on the floor in a guard station in california and had shot in the back and that's
8:28 pm
a great point but i think that's a problem that i'm just curious if sometimes gun rights backfire on innocent people you know i think you can look at a freak case and you can always bank that argument but more often than not and there are plenty of chances for getting out on this when civilians use firearms because they have accountability for the way that law enforcement doesn't they are much less likely to fire them their farms are much more likely to be used to prevent crimes rather than as the rebels themselves a little made prior to the guy that he was holding it and nobody got shot right in the crime was by the swat team there right but he's dead so who cares his crime was he offered life why no and that's a that's a tragedy and that's what we've been talking about this is why you need to be looking at this from a fundamental human rights perspective that marine out of. right to be safe and secure in his home not just as a human being living peaceably to get along but on the fourth amendment to the us constitution and the answer isn't to say well let's take away more rights and let's think of what this law is let's take away more rights until you know we're all just
8:29 pm
completely disarmed government wage slaves whereas and so we can say no let's give people more rights let's respect privacy let's respect property let's not knock down their door in the first place with these you know no knock raids where people are are being ambushed in their homes and this power marine was under the assumption rightly so that his home was being invented that was adam code cache of artie's adam vs the man and that is going to do it for now for more on the stories we covered go to our t. dot com slash usa check out argue two page two at youtube dot com slash r t america follow me on twitter at lauren lyster and tune in tomorrow among other things we'll have more on what has not been covered you'd be surprised all the murders well everyone is paying attention to casey anthony had a good night.
