said. either one well. we never got there for safety get ready for freedom. our time to show in silence tonight's program last time we told you about a un report highlighted the escalating violence in afghanistan however that report come for legally contradicted statements coming from u.s. military officials so i want to know who you think is giving us the real stats on
6:32 pm
violence and death in afghanistan at the u.n. or the u.s. let's go to producer patrice and essentially to find out what you have to say. i know the tracing the military well face is trying to tell us that we're gaining momentum against the taliban and that the surge has been successful projects and reversible but six. yes but nevertheless one of the ways are trying to prove it well general john allen recently told congress that violence in afghanistan is five percent lower compared to last him ok well it sounds great but there you run said in a new report that violence is on the rise and civilian deaths are up twenty percent since who do you think is telling the truth well david morrissey believes neither most of the violence he said goes on reported that may be true to this year's time magazine he wrote an article that most about fantasy and violence actually takes place in provinces and can go unreported and i have doubt he said he doesn't trust
6:33 pm
either side because both sides they have an agenda that suits their needs and plan is equally a skeptical he said oh yeah i believe them why wouldn't you have they ever lied to us before well sometimes they can be lying but other times it's just a matter of how to patrol the numbers the u.s. and coalition forces can tell you that violence is down because so far this year they're only responsible for ten percent of civilian casualties well last year they were responsible for sixteen percent and the thing is the year it's only half finished and there are no signs that the airstrikes are going to slow down and no indication that the rising number of suicide and bombing attacks against civilians will decrease either though most of you could not bring yourself to trust either side in this question and a few of you even lean towards trusting the u.n. i can only quote a line from the song crock by michael jackson someone is hiding the truth holder. thanks for giving us your input and here's our next question for you we just told
6:34 pm
you about the consequences of wisconsin's anti-union bill that's going to have backed president maids are filling in and working for free or county workers once had jobs so i want to know what you think should prison inmates be allowed to replace public sector employees on to us on facebook twitter and you tube and knows your response just might make. the sky. the light will come down. so much still carries will be singing. ladies and gentlemen tonight we have a glimmer of hope for you see it appears as if the u.s. has finally become outraged over an issue that's been quite contentious around the rest of the world sure google street view option is fun to look out when you're trying to find a new location but countries across the world and speaking out over the methods of the internet giant utilized to obtain those images see back in two thousand and ten it was discovered that the street view cars were obtaining the images were also
6:35 pm
painting that of individuals through their wife by networks and several countries like the u.k. of already giving google a slap on the wrist but after a group of people here in the u.s. created a combined lawsuit against google or federal judge has now side with the plaintiffs the decision by the silicon valley judge says that the internet giants knowingly installed software in their street view equipment which is a violation of the wiretapping at google's original argument was that they were going to do anything with that private data and basically they said that if anyone is dumb enough to have an unprotected router well then that information was fair game very games me anyways to be collected now the federal judge also said that google's argument doesn't hold up because any information even the flows through a non password enabled router is still protected the same way that cell phone conversations are protected so why is this a glimmer of hope for starters it means that anybody who uses an unprotected router at any point in time like say in a coffee shop you're still granted the right of privacy for those for that data and
6:36 pm
this ruling is also significant because when the us originally started looking into this sketchy method federal investigators they decided to drop the investigation right the f.t.c. basically said hey looks like google's going to clean up their own best so we're just going to back out so i am relieved to learn that americans didn't rely on the government's half assed investigation into google and. they took it upon themselves to make sure the make a corporation didn't get away with nothing personal that i think that everybody knew is the google has a knack for pushing their limits on every front getting right up to that creepy line is eric schmidt would say and other pay for it with all these probes and investigations that are putting a magnifying glass on the search engine now this judge's decision is by no means going to be the downfall of the great cooper but i do think that rulings like this are at least going to keep the company from taking their efforts too far true glimmer of hope. and now yesterday we told you about a new challenge to the protect ip act a group of nine here law professors has signed incentive letter to congress
6:37 pm
opposing the legislation saying that it not only amounts to internet censorship of barred by the first amendment but also allies the u.s. the present regime legislation is for now been stalled in congress but if you need a refresher course it's the law that would allow the government to essentially blacklist websites that they deem to be engaging in infringing activities as the letter calls it it's the internet death penalty and sold as a piece of copyright in portsmouth and has the heavy backing of hollywood but is it unconstitutional and could this letter help stop the bill and its tracks joining me to discuss it is one of these law professors mark lemley from stanford law school mark thanks so much for joining us tonight now there are ninety professors they got to sign this letter i makes me feel like you guys are really serious about this because it must not be an easy task to get so many people together to sign a letter like this to send it to congress does that show just how concerned you are . it's true that one hundred first reserve today and getting law professors to
6:38 pm
agree to anything is a herculean task but we've got liberals and conservatives libertarians and sadists also endure and that is because it's really quite disturbing. what it is that congress and proposing to do here now can you outline for us i guess some of the largest problems that you see of the legislation. sure well first and foremost we're giving the government the power to break the internet specifically to break the domain name address and system and the internet works because if i type in microsoft dot com i can cause the confidence that i'll go to microsoft that will be true anymore no every internet service provider will have to consult a list of sites they are barred from linking to search engines will have to do the same thing and credit card providers and advertisers won't be able to do business with sites that are determined to be infringing copyright wherever they are in the
6:39 pm
world what about the fact that we i not getting mentioned wherever they are in the world why is it that congress thinks of fair last year just legislate under our copyright laws for websites all over the world that seems a little onto me. they had a problem with the copyright owners faces on the internet there's not really much of a national boundary and so a website that exists anywhere in the world is just as accessible to the united states now other countries in the world have dealt with this. issue by trying to cut off access to foreign sites or cut off access to information that the game objectionable china is on the list iran is on the list mubarak's egypt regime was on the list. the proposal here i guess would put the united states on that list too saying we don't want things from outside our borders to be accessible to our citizens and if we've determined that they violate
6:40 pm
a principle that we share that isn't perhaps ocracy they're just a little too much to handle considering that our government is supposedly championing this entire idea of internet access and freedom of the internet for everybody there actually working with people within different countries subvert some of those regimes that you mentioned yes and i know it's one of my real concerns with this act is it makes it impossible for the state department to go out with a straight face and fight for internet freedom in repressive regimes around the world if those countries can turn around and say well wait a minute when you find something that you find offensive copyright infringement you not only allow people to sue for infringement but you block the website entirely the copyright owners have plenty of tools to deal with the problem of infringement and infringement is a problem on the internet but. controlling the internet breaking the internet doesn't seem to me
6:41 pm
a wise addition to the norm well if they have to laws then why is it that they spend so much money and i think that we can say when when we say that a hollywood essentially why they spend so much money millions of dollars lobbying congress to pass this type of legislation. well you know the problem is that the content owners face is there's a lot of infringement out there and it's distributed so they'll sue a website and they'll bring it down in another website will take place they'd like to be able to go to the source if i can just sort of get the central switch that controls the internet and and pull the plug if i can go to google and say you're not allowed to the point to any of these web sites they could kill off of a bunch of infringement in one fell swoop the problem is they kill off a bunch of non infringing sites and a bunch of innovation along with it now forth the idea of anybody having a kill switch which by the way has been before in congress for the internet is very scary but tell me if you agree with that critique is this is something that i've
6:42 pm
heard before is that maybe congress you know sure there are i said individual they're elected that maybe they just aren't capable with legislating on so many patients maybe they're a little bit too advanced for them a little too technical for them should they really be the ones making the decisions well you know it's a it is a problem it is always although i think there are a number of smart people in congress the staffers and the congress people part of the problem we've had is they've been hearing from only one side in this day. and i think this letter is a letter by a group of internet technology experts in another letter by venture capitalists i hope is going to educate. my other worry i guess is you know if you're in congress . the instinct is well there's a problem we've got to do something about it and sometimes the right thing to do is nothing and i think that's the case here. that's so funny because you know i wish
6:43 pm
that they would do something about so many of the other problems that we're facing right now if you want to talk about unemployment or the economy but they're focusing on the protect ip act real quick have you heard anything back from any responses to the letter. so we've gotten a little bit of response i my sense is that this is the end until quite recently you want to fast track in congress we're expecting to see it introduced in the house very quickly ron wyden the senator from oregon has put a hold on the bill in the senate and i think if there are a few courageous people in congress who will stand up to where we can prevent this from happening are michael thanks so much for joining us and i guess you're getting more signatories every day as you know like about thank you. just ahead tonight a governor's comments about abortion lands them in. and stick around for happy hour the women who are nursing need and milk truck and plus reports to catch reports they had to catch a predator chris hansen is worried that his naked sexting photos might seem to go
6:44 pm
viral stick around for some time. into the mirror and there was a mechanism to do the work to bring justice accountability. i have a right to know what my government should do if you want to know why i pay taxes that's. why i would characterize obama as a charismatic sort. of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story at the scene so you think you understand it and then you give them something else here so you saw the part of it and realized everything you saw. i'm sorry this is the.
6:46 pm
rules i'm award and tonight we're giving it to louisiana governor bobby jindal here on wednesday the republican governor signed house bill six three six into law and it requires women to be informed of their specific legal rights and options before they undergo an abortion procedure and the measure is now that of course abortion providers to post signs of a pill it is saying that it's illegal to coerce a woman into an abortion and letting them know about child support that a father must pay which state agencies could help during a pregnancy and at some adoptive parents are willing to pay for medical costs basically is another move by republicans who claim to be all about smaller government i can try to legislate
6:47 pm
a woman's uterus. but the thing at the really gets me here is that bobby jindal has been rumored to have white house aspirations so this new abortion bill might be just great for him in fact a comment that he made to bill signing is really going away to some support in the pro-life crowd he said quote when officers arrest criminals today they're read their rights so so separate is the second he's really not stupid enough to compare women who have an abortion to criminals as well looks like unfortunately he is governor jindal went on to say now if we're giving criminals their basic rights and they have to be informed of those rights but it seems to me only common sense we would have to do the same thing for women before they make a choice about whether to get an abortion you know i'm not sure the governor has any common sense on this issue because the pre-court for starters rule of the one nine hundred seventy three roe v wade case that abortion was illegal in the u.s. so governor you can't just compare a painful and personal decision that a woman makes about her own body to a criminal act that's just offensive what jindal is bodies seem to have absolutely
6:48 pm
no problem trying to restrict freedom as seems to be a trend in louisiana in fact that dates back centuries you might recall back in april we brought you a report on how new orleans police and prosecutors still use nineteenth century laws to prosecute people they're called crimes against nature and they often deal with sex acts between two consenting adults new orleans uses those laws to target prostitutes and some of the laws on the book make anal sex punishable by twenty years in jail so in order to avoid jail time if they just fines of of her thousands of dollars now it's a money making revolve based on an old law written when morals and society were much much different that law was actually overturned in the last few days so what is governor bobby jindal and his republican friends do now all they do is go after abortion rights something they also object to morally and that's why it louisiana governor bobby jindal is tonight's told time later.
6:49 pm
ok it's thursday and it's time for happy hour joining me for this evening as argued producer jenny churchill and jim hansen retired special operations master sergeant and military blogger at loch fyne thought net thanks for joining me guys now i have this story feeling you're going to like this one drive over stories and i'm going to show you a news story of a woman in pittsburgh that essentially wants to this is these are her words to support mothers who are harassed for nursing in public here's her idea on how to change that. the ball on top of christ is going to be a flashing red light it's going to come flashing in we zoom in part the truck close followers on twitter and facebook would show up then we're going to call chairs out under the sidewalk we're going to lay a road we're going to take over the area that we are. they want to make a truck what do you think. would you be valid the parking in front of the
6:50 pm
restaurant and all these women coming in just within about a movement all records one hundred percent. you know this kind of thing any time any place anywhere a giant truck i didn't pay taxes for that right so i'm just going to say i was confused when i read the story initially i thought that they were going to you know take the women the way into the truck because you know i have a serious part is like out and proud and i have to say this is are going to beat him. for it i mean is this is this really just me or anything like yes this is. just you and i have three eighty well the thing is that we project her idea was ok not so bad we showed you her boob track it looks a little bit too much like an ice cream. dory so we came up with our own version of what the. ok but i'm really glad it was you know i am really glad it was losing my mind because i want to control really aren't
6:51 pm
slashing on the screen they're like no you need therapy only to flash in front of me. plenty of common thought about would. you know nipple rings at all really take back a score in the middle of the score on that one. ok let's move on to. this actually isn't any more appropriate at all. many of you probably have watched to catch a predator it's a fun show the whole family could enjoy let me give you a few clips to remind you of who the host is of this show. i'll be. ready for school to see if this works for you for children over the internet. just. so chris hansen that was the good guys because. we're dope perverts shows up at
6:52 pm
a little girl's house who is pretend all is usually somebody pretending to be like a thirteen year old girl and he's there to get some action and then chris hansen walks out and catches him turns out chris hansen a was caught cheating on his wife and now chris hansen is worried that some very steamy and racy photos might actually you know come out on the internet wreak we should say i feel like this story is really really unconfirmed it's like a source who knows him says he's concerned so i just think we should convert that out there i was out first of all the signal relation second i'd like to see the rumor i heard is there's going to be in the show with him and anthony weiner told joke talk. out of a job now is he doing this on the front on air but i mean it's a little ironic come on pretty bad thing to catch a predator and sure this woman that he's you know sexting and having an affair with and stuff she may not be an underage girl but that we know that we are going to have you know. i mean people are getting really upset on twitter when we pointed
6:53 pm
this out last week and thought it was so funny and they were like well she's not under age she's not doing anything illegal i mean not have a sense of humor yeah exactly it's just funny you're just a i mean it's you know you this personal life falling to pieces for our own enjoyment i couldn't you for the tell you were someone jumps out there saying so chris you're sending pictures. i would be willing incidentally. i you know i'd like everybody so you. ok so this is a story that we actually talked about earlier in the week before it had gotten even more intense and that was about news of the world a murdoch owned newspaper in. in the u.k. and it turns out that this young girl who was missing they had actually had to her cell phone and. bracing voice mails deleting messages excuse me which made the family think that she might be alive and it turns out later that she was murdered now the scandals expanded turns out they did it to obviously we already knew that they did it to celebrities now it turns out they also did it to the families of
6:54 pm
soldiers from afghanistan from iraq and now murdoch's papers going to pay take a look. at that scandal brought down the paper itself it is surprising turn media mogul rupert murdoch owner of the paper ordered it to shut down this sunday will be the last edition now this is the same who owns news corp their hands oh please tell us this from here is rupert everett i just didn't get a little profile. it's kind of incredible though is that a lot of people today say you know twitter and blogs essentially shut this paper down because everybody was freaking out about it so much and going on about how wrong it is yeah i mean i was surprised i didn't know that rupert murdoch had a conscience so i didn't know that he would actually take that step i mean it's actually just gusting they were also allegedly listening to the emails of people who died in the london bombing i mean just like there was no lines there it was anyone was fair game i think it. does have
6:55 pm
a conscience because when we spoke about this on tuesday we were saying that well they're doing this because they're trying to keep up with demand and people want these they just have this insatiable appetite for some of these stories and now he actually has to shut it down because obviously it's not really profitable for him anymore can we just go with no great loss i mean can we get our stories about six hundred babies you know and aliens invasion that kind of stuck somewhere else i think there are plenty of other outlets i gotta say i've never read news of the world but maybe somebody out there will miss it and i think that if nobody's doing anything then you can turn in for like one hundred something years. ok let's move on to something else. just kind of weird to this member elizabeth smart elizabeth smart was of course the young girl who was abducted and years later was found and earlier this year her abductor was being sentenced and she was very calm very peaceful take
6:56 pm
a look at what she looks like now right down to it it doesn't matter what i think it matters what the judge thinks so i hope and pray that right. ok quick sorry correction apparently she was gone for about six months for some reason in my mind it was longer that but now she's going to be on good morning america and nightline and she's going to be their new abduction correspondent what do you say i'm just waiting to see who cracks the first joke about the girl that was kidnapped. i just like this you know if anybody deserves to get paid for it you know she did nothing wrong she was blameless in the situation is getting paid for and there's a lot of shows unit correspondent for pro torture internet pictures of people who are mine not to support her. campaign as a special correspondent bravo i mean some people did bring up some interesting questions you know other than the fact that she herself has been abducted what credentials does she have to be on television and doesn't have any but then again
6:57 pm
most people are kind of. saying is it is don't anymore i mean if you look at e.s.p.n. happens you know what you want to be i don't think you need credentials i think this is what you need to be on television let us just show you the woman that we spoke yesterday. let me do. tonight. unfortunately that will be it is who people love to watch on television elizabeth smart just seems so sweet and innocent to me we're going to choose between nancy grace elizabeth smart oh thanks melissa but smart and nancy grace can burn in there. so if she does have a little more of that outgoing or as. i get her out people love her for some reason things are going to be guys that's a very nice show thanks for tuning in to make sure the back tomorrow or it's well presented to me back on the program we'll talk about the latest foreign policy developments in the meantime don't forget to become a fan of the
