if the democrats are so awful this might become a tactic but it's pretty scary out there a thing that i like too is that people are trying to estimate how much money the state of minnesota has lost at this point because of the shutdown but the people that are supposed to be counting are not working right now. are mike thank you so much for joining us tonight on the show. we have our thursday edition of show and tell just ahead ninety law professors are urging congress not to pass the. measure is equated to censorship and that it's unconstitutional. one of the professors in just a month. eleven

media saying he's whipping the anti russian hysteria. you politicians loudly condemn rating agency moody's it decision to downgrade portugal's debt to junk status and to threaten possible retaliation the verdict sends a shock waves through financial markets and triggers worries that portugal could follow greece it down the path of a possible default. and coming up in about thirty minutes my colleague carrie johnson will be here with a full look at euro news but right now it's back to our washington d.c. studios with. all right it's time for show and tell on tonight's program the last time we told you about a u.n. report highlighted the escalating violence in afghanistan however that report completely contradicted statements coming from u.s. military officials so we want to know who you think is giving us the real stats on
11:34 pm
violence and death in afghanistan at the u.n. or the u.s. let's go to producer patrice and sent you to find out what you had to say. general petraeus in the military well they've been trying to tell us that we're gaining momentum against the taliban and the search has been successful fragile and reversible but successful nevertheless and one of the ways are trying to prove it well general john allen who recently told congress that violence in afghanistan is five percent lower compared to last ok now that sounds great but the u.n. has said in a new report that violence is on the rise and civilian deaths are up twenty percent so who do you think is telling the truth well david morrissey believes neither most of the violence he said goes on reported but may be true david this year in time magazine they wrote an article that most about ghana stands violence actually takes place in provinces and can go unreported now you have dug he said he doesn't trust
11:35 pm
either side because both sides they have an agenda that suits their needs had plenty of these equally as skeptical he said i believe why wouldn't you have they ever lied to us before well ahead sometimes they can be lying but other times it's just a matter of how to patrol the numbers the u.s. and coalition forces can tell you that violence is down because so far this year they are only responsible for ten percent of civilian casualties while last year they were responsible for sixteen percent and the thing is the year it's only half finished and there are no signs that the airstrikes are going to slow down and no one to. nation that the rising number of suicide bombing attacks against civilians will decrease either well most of you could not bring yourself to trust either side in this question and if you do you even lean towards trusting the un i can only quote a line from the song cry by michael jackson is hiding the truth hold up. thanks for giving us your input and here's our next question for you we just told you
11:36 pm
about the consequences of wisconsin's anti-union bill that's gone into effect prison inmates are filling in and working for free we're county workers once had jobs so we want to know what you think should prison inmates be allowed to replace public sector employees you can respond to us on facebook twitter and you tube and you know as your response just might make it on air. the sky. the line will come down. so must you carriers will be singing. ladies and gentlemen tonight we have a glimmer of hope for you see it appears as if the u.s. has finally become outraged over an issue that's been quite contentious around the rest of the world sure google's street view option is fun to look at when you're trying to find a new location but countries across the world been speaking out over the methods of the internet giant utilized to obtain those images see back in two thousand and ten it was discovered that the street view cars were obtaining the images were also
11:37 pm
obtaining data of individuals through their wife by networks. now several countries like the u.k. have already given google a slap on the wrist but after a group of people here in the u.s. created a combined lawsuit against the google or federal judge has now sided with the plaintiffs a decision by the silicon valley judge says that the internet giant knowingly installed spy software in their street view equipment which is a violation of the wiretapping act and google's original argument was that they were going to do anything with that private data and basically they said that if anyone is dumb enough to have an unprotected router well then that information was fair game very. excuse me anyways to be collected now the federal judge also said that google's argument doesn't hold up because any information even if it flows through a non password enabled router is still protected the same way that cell phone conversations are protected so why is this a glimmer of hope oh for starters it means that anybody who uses an unprotected browser at any point in time like say in a coffee shop you're still granted the right of privacy for those data for that
11:38 pm
data and this ruling is also significant because when the us originally started looking into this sketchy method federal investigators they decided to drop the investigation right the f.t.c. basically said have a looks like google's going to clean up their own best so we're just going to back out so i am relieved to learn that americans didn't rely on the government's half ass and you can to google and they took it upon themselves to make sure the mega corporation didn't get away with nagging personal data i think that everybody news the google has a knack for pushing their limits on every front getting right up to that creepy line as eric schmidt would say and other paying for it with all these probes and investigations that are putting a magnifying glass on the search engine now this judge's decision is by no means going to be the downfall of the great cooper but i do think that rulings like this are at least going to keep the company from taking their efforts too far a true glimmer of hope. now yesterday we told you about a new challenge to the protect ip act a group of ninety law professors has signed and sent
11:39 pm
a letter to congress opposing the legislation saying that it not only amounts to internet censorship of the barred by the first amendment but also aligns the us with a press of regimes and legislation is for now been stalled in congress but if you need a refresher course it's the one that would allow the government to essentially blacklist websites that they deem to be engaging in infringing activities the letter calls it it's the internet death penalty and sold as a piece of copyright in force mint and has the heavy backing of hollywood but is it unconstitutional and could this letter help stop the bill in its tracks joining me to discuss it is one of these law professors mark lemley from stanford law school mark thanks so much for joining us tonight now there are ninety professors that you've got to sign this letter that makes me feel like you guys are really serious about this because it must not be an easy task to get so many people together to sign a letter like this to send it to congress does that show just how concerned you are . it's true and we're up to one hundred nine professors as of today and getting law professors to agree to anything is is
11:40 pm
a herculean task but we've got liberals and conservatives libertarians and status souls signed on to this because it's really quite disturbing. what it is that congress is proposing to do here now can you outline for us i guess some of the largest problem with the legislation. sure first and foremost we're giving the government the power to break the internet specifically to break that may name addressing system at the end it works because if i type in microsoft dot com i can confidently confident that i'll go to microsoft that won't be true anymore now every internet service provider will have to consult a list of sites they are barred from linking to search engines will have to do the same thing and credit card providers and advertisers won't be able to do business with sites that are determined to be infringing copyright wherever they are in the
11:41 pm
world wow about the fact that we i happen to mention wherever they are in the world why is it that congress thinks that they're allowed to just legislate under our copyright laws for websites all over the world that seems a little odd to me. you know the problem that the copyright owners face is on the internet there's not really much of a national boundary and so a website that exists anywhere in the world is just as accessible to the united states now other countries in the world have dealt with this. issue by trying to cut off access to foreign sites or cut off access to information that they deem objectionable china is on the list iran is on the list mubarak's egypt regime was on the list. the proposal here i guess would put the united states on the list to saying we don't want things from outside our borders to be accessible to our citizens if we've determined that they violate
11:42 pm
a principle that we object to now isn't the hypocrisy there just a little too much to handle considering that our government is supposedly championing this entire idea of internet access a freedom of the internet for everybody there actually working with people within different countries q to us a virus some of those regimes that you mentioned yes and that and that's one of my real concerns with this act is it makes it impossible for the state department to go out with a straight face and fight for internet freedom in repressive regimes around the world if those countries can turn around and say well wait a minute when you find something that you find offensive copyright infringement you not only allow people to sue for infringement but you block the website entirely the copyright owners have plenty of tools to deal with the problem of infringement and infringement is a problem on the internet but. controlling the internet breaking the internet doesn't seem to me
11:43 pm
a wise addition to that arm well if they have tools then why is it that they spend so much money and i think that we can say when and when we say they hollywood essentials why they spend so much money millions of dollars lobbying congress to pass this type of legislation. well you know the problem that the content owners face is there's a lot of infringement out there and it's distributed so they'll sue a web site and they'll bring it down in another website will take its place they'd like to be able to go to the source if i can just sort of get the central switch that controls the internet and pull the plug if i can go to google and say you're not allowed to point to any of these web sites they could kill off of a bunch of infringement in one fell swoop the problem is they kill off a bunch of non infringing sites and a bunch of innovation along with it now of course the idea of anybody having a kill switch which by the way has been proposed before in congress for the internet is very scary but tell me if you agree with the critique is this is
11:44 pm
something that i've heard before is that maybe congress should share their respective individuals they are elected maybe they just aren't capable with legislating on somebody as a she is maybe they're a little bit too advanced for them a little too technical for them should they really be the ones making the decisions . well you know it's a it is a problem. as always although i think there are a number of smart people in congress the staffers and the congress people part of the problem we've had is they've been hearing from only one side in this debate. and i think you know this letter there's a letter by a group of internet technology experts another letter by venture capitalists i hope is going to educate. my other worry i guess is you know if you're in congress. the instinct well there's a problem we've got to do something about it and sometimes the right thing to do is nothing and i think that's the case here. that's so funny because you know i wish
11:45 pm
that they would do something about so many of the other problems that we're facing right now if you want to talk about unemployment or the economy but they're focusing on the project i.p.x. real quick have you heard anything back from any responses to the letter. oh so we've gotten a little bit of response on my sense is that this is the end until quite recently i want to fast track in congress we're expecting to see it introduced in the house very quickly ron wyden the senator from oregon has put a hold on the bill in the senate and i think if there are a few courageous people in congress who will stand up to it we can prevent this from happening our michael thanks so much for joining us tonight and i guess you're getting more signatories every day so good luck with that thank you. just ahead tonight a governor's comments about abortion lands and tonight's all time segment and stick around for happy hour do women who are nursing need and will trot and plus reports to catch reports say that to catch a predator chris hansen is worried that his naked sexting photos might soon go
11:46 pm

11:48 pm
time for tide tool time award and tonight we're giving it to louisiana governor bobby jindal so on wednesday the republican governor signed house bill six three six into law and it requires women to be informed of their specific legal rights and options before they undergo an abortion procedure and the measure is now going to force abortion providers to post signs of a still it is saying that it's illegal to coerce a woman into an abortion and letting them know about child support that a father must pay which state agencies could help during a pregnancy and that some adoptive parents are willing to pay for medical costs basically it's another move by republicans who claim to be all about smaller government again trying to legislate a woman's uterus but the thing that they're really gets me here is that bobby jindal has been rumored to have white house aspirations so this new abortion bill might be just great for him right in fact a comment that he made of the bill signing is really going away to some support in the pro-life crowd he said quote when officers arrested criminals today they're read their rights so stop suffered as
11:49 pm
a second he's really not stupid enough to compare women who have an abortion to criminals as well looks like unfortunately he is governor jindal went on to say now if we're giving criminals their basic rights and they have to be informed of those rights. but it seems to me only common sense would have to do the same thing for women before they make the choice about whether to get an abortion you know i'm not sure the governor has any common sense on this issue the supreme court for starters rule of the one nine hundred seventy three roe v wade case that abortion was illegal in the u.s. so governor you can't just compare a painful and a personal decision that a woman makes about her own body to a criminal act that's just offensive but jindal of his buddies seem to have absolutely no problem trying to restrict freedom that seems to be a trend in louisiana in fact that dates back centuries you might recall back in april we brought you a report on how new orleans police and prosecutors still use one thousand century laws to prosecute people they're called crimes against nature and they often deal with sex acts between two consenting adults new orleans uses those laws to target
11:50 pm
prostitutes and some of the laws on the book make oral or anal sex punishable by twenty years in jail so in order to avoid jail time is that he just finds the hookers thousands of dollars now it's a money making rip off of based on an old law written when morals and society were much much different that law was actually overturned in the last few days so what is governor bobby jindal of his republican friends do now all they do is go after abortion rights something they also object to morally and that's why a louisiana governor bobby jindal is tonight's trial time where. ok it's thursday and it's time for happy hour joining me for this evening as our t.v. producer jenny churchill and jim hansen retired special operations master sergeant and military blogger at black five dot net thanks for joining me guys now i have
11:51 pm
this story feeling you're going to like this one jimbo for some reason i'm going to show you a new story of a woman in pittsburgh that essentially two wants to this is these are her words to support mother. who are harassed for nursing in public here's her idea on how to change that. on top of the breast is going to be a flashing red light it's going to come flashing in and resume in part the truck plus followers on twitter and facebook which they were going to pull chairs out under the sidewalk we're going to layer we're going to take over the area that we park they want to make a blue truck what do you think would. be a would you be down with the parking in front of the restaurant and all these women coming up in just a bit about your records one hundred percent so i don't see how this could be any time any place anywhere a truck yeah i didn't pay taxes for that i'm just going to say i was confused when
11:52 pm
i read the story initially i thought that they were going to you know take the women away into the truck because i don't have there's a part of it is like out and proud and i have to say businesses are going to be hit yeah the reason for it though i mean is this is this is really going to be i'm going to be like yes this is. just you i had eighty well the thing is that we thought that her idea was ok not so bad we showed you her boob drug it looks a little bit too much like an ice cream truck hunky dory so we came up with our own version of what the. ok. i'm really glad i want to know and i'm really glad it was losing my mind because i want to begin jewelry. splashing on the screen and they're like no you need therapy you know that only the boobs are going to flash in front of me. plenty of. what i think are boom abele you know nipple rings and all really takes the cake score i mean i'm going to go with the score on that one. ok let's move on to. this
11:53 pm
actually isn't any more appropriate at all. many of you probably have watched to catch a predator it's a fun show the whole family could enjoy let me give you a few clips to remind you of who the host is at this show. obviously. predators going on just to search for your children over the internet. or. so chris hansen that was the good guys because you know weirdo perverts shows up at a little girl's house who is pretend all it's usually somebody pretending to be like a thirteen year old girl and he's there to get some action and then chris hansen walks out and catches him turns out chris hansen a was caught cheating on his wife and now chris hansen is worried that some very steamy end racy photos that might actually come out on the internet leak we should say i feel like this story is
11:54 pm
really really unconfirmed it's like a source who knows him says he's concerned so i just think we should kind of learn that out there i was out first of all the signal relation second i'd like to see the rumor i heard is there's going to be an n.b.c. show with him and anthony weiner called joke talk. turns out of a job now do you do it on the road on air but i mean that it's a little ironic. to catch a predator and sure this woman that he's you know sexting and having an affair with and stuff she may not be an underage girl but that we know that we don't we don't know that you know. i mean people are getting really upset on twitter when we point this out last week and thought it was so funny and they were like well she's not under age she's not doing anything illegal and cannot have a sense of humor yeah exactly it's just funny you're just a i think it's going to tell you this personal life falling to pieces for our own enjoyment i keep waiting for the tell you were someone jumps out there saying chris
11:55 pm
you're sending pictures. i would be willing incidentally. you know i'd like you know. so you. ok so this is a story that we actually talked about earlier in the week before it had gotten even more intense and that was about news of the world a murdoch owned newspaper in. in the u.k. and it turns out that this young girl who was missing they had actually hacked her cell phone and were racing voice mails deleting messages excuse me which made the family think that she might be alive and it turns out later that she was murdered now the scandals expanded turns out they did it to obviously we already knew that they did it to celebrities now it turns out they also did it to the families of soldiers from afghanistan from iraq and now murdoch's papers going to pay take a look. that scandal brought down the paper itself it is surprising turn media mogul rupert murdoch owner of the paper ordered it to shut down this sunday will be the last edition now this is the same who owns news corp that happens oh please
11:56 pm
tell us who is from here is over there and i don't i didn't i didn't get a little profile. it's kind of incredible though is that a lot of people today say you know twitter and blogs essentially shut this paper down because everybody was freaking out about it so much going on about how wrong it is you know i mean i was surprised i didn't know that rupert murdoch had a conscience so i didn't know that he would actually take that step i mean it's actually disgusting they were also allegedly listening to the e-mails of people who died in the london bombing i mean just like there was no lines there it was anyone was fair game i think it was for i don't see the murdoch does have a conscience because when we spoke about this on tuesday we were saying that well they're doing this maybe because they're trying to keep up with demand and people want these like they just have this insatiable appetite for some of these stories and now he actually has to shut it down because obviously it's not going to be profitable for him anymore can we just go with no great loss i mean we get our stories about six headed babies you know and aliens invasions and that kind of
11:57 pm
stuff somewhere else i think there are plenty of other outlets i got to say have never read news of the world but maybe someone out there you know i think that if nobody's doing anything then john turned in for like one hundred something years. ok let's move on to something else. just kind of weird to this member elizabeth smart elizabeth smart was of course the young girl who was abducted and years later it was found and earlier this year her abductor was being sentenced and she was very calm very peaceful take a look at what she looks like now. down to it doesn't matter what i think it matters what the judge thinks. so i hope and pray that the right thing. ok quick sorry correction apparently she was gone for about six months for some reason in my mind it was longer that but now she's going to be on good morning
11:58 pm
america and nightline and she's going to be their new abduction correspondent what do you think i'm just waiting to see who cracks the first joke about the girl that was kidnapped. i just like to see if anybody deserves to get paid for it you know she did nothing wrong she was blameless in the situation is getting paid for it and as did a lot of shows your correspondent for pro torture internet pictures of people's jokes who are mine not to support her. campaign is a special correspondent bravo i mean some people did bring up some interesting questions you know other than the fact that she herself has been abducted what credentials does she have to be on television and doesn't have any but then again most people are going to have a problem you're not going to see it is don't anymore i mean if you look at e.s.p.n. half those you know most people don't have to enjoy all but i don't think you need credentials and i think this is what you need to be on television let us just show you the woman that we spoke about yesterday. let me just.
11:59 pm
bring tonight. well unfortunately that woman is the people love to watch on television elizabeth smart just seems so sweet and innocent to me we're going to choose between nancy grace elizabeth smart i'll take some elizabeth smart and nancy grace can burn in their devil's dance and right ok so then she does have a little more of that outgoing or as. i got to wrap it up people love her for some reason thanks for joining you guys that's a very nice show thanks for tuning in to make sure these come back tomorrow lawrence wilkerson is going to back on the program to talk about the latest foreign policy developments in the meantime don't forget to plan to be a lot of show on facebook and follow us on twitter and if you missed any of tonight's show or any other night he can always catch all the you tube dot com slash there are so many post interviews as well as the show and it's entirety coming up next is adam versus the matter.
