out why the boat went down such terrible consequences. you're watching r.t. broadcasting live from moscow well straight to our top story now divers have found the bodies of more than a hundred people around thirty of them children trapped inside a pleasure cruiser that sank on russia's. so far twelve people have been officially confirmed dead from sunday's tragedy and they're part of tata star search and rescue teams worked throughout the night and the recovery operation continues today lottie's time barton is monitoring the efforts. the hunt is still on going for any possible survivors the count but the emergencies ministry has set up behind me next to the ball go on a small beach here a small boats keep coming to and from this site and they're part of the largest
3:02 am
search effort this is screening the area where the area river pleasure cruiser sank to try and find any people still in the water although that looks looking increasingly unlikely now or scattered on some of the small islands around where the boat sank we heard from one of their spokesman earlier about what they found when they reached the scene of the sunken pleasure cruiser we knocked on the boats whole and waited for an answer but unfortunately there was not the flashlights and the cargo holds and the restrooms and the supplies there. the scene that unfolded yesterday was one of a quiet sunday afternoon river cruise along the volga many many people do this is very popular among tourists in the summer to travel along the folder in pleasure cruisers upstream was its final destination and then around two pm the ship got into difficulties and whatever happened this ship actually sank within three minutes it was such
3:03 am
a fast sinking that the chaos that ensued on board caused much of the problems that we see now. there were many children on board the ship it seems maybe a third of the passengers. on board the ship were children just hours just before the ship began to sank sink a group of about thirty children had gathered on one of the upper decks in the play room to hold either a party or gathered to play together in the play room a lot of the eyewitnesses reported that those children because there were so many of them in various parts of the ship they struggled to get out and some of the eyewitnesses accounts have been extremely harrowing. families torn apart in the struggle to try and escape into the water not even time for people to put their life jackets on on the sun some families even having to leave their own children behind on the sinking ship or the with of the vessel sank within three minutes it

flipped to the right swerved and went down we were literally thrown out that's how we survived our whole family was on that ship we lost everybody my wife and grandchildren two vessels have passed by and didn't even care to stop and reach out a helping hand we spent around two hours in the water before we were rescued i swam around searching for any survivors and couldn't find any body if there were a lot of children on the ship a wall in the games room it was impossible for them to get out of there my grandson would be five years old tomorrow we went on this trip to celebrate his birthday. if you would think of it is that people basically buried alive as if in the middle soko forgets we managed to get through the windows i was there with my ten year old daughter i couldn't risk her she swallowed too much water when it was a realised my child was absent we don't know where to look for survivors there were a lot of children and were even more than ever my only kid ran into me and my

husband to three minutes before the she'd stand and told us please we'll live checketts as the vessel assembly and i couldn't believe it. me think we are telephoning everyone trying to learn anything about our dear ones we called the police but they said to contact the search and rescue service we did but there was no reply so we came here to find out at least something but even here nobody knows anything. it's horrible we haven't the slightest knowledge of what's going on they should give the police some information where calling the search and rescue service i don't answer the phone when people were able to get off the ship into the water they found that their troubles were in full. far from over the point of which the ship sunk was three kilometers from the nearest bank and the river the river there the volga is immensely wide is around ten kilometers wide at that point so anyone in the water would have an awful job trying to get to the bank some of them may
3:06 am
have sheltered on the small islands around the ship and waited there and the search is still ongoing for them but it's clear that many of the people especially children who got into the water may have drowned in the rivers strong currents but soon after the ship sank a lot of the people in the water were very dismayed to see two ships pass by them or not pick up anyone it's not quite known why that was yet a third ship did arrive and did start to pick people up we can hear from someone who was on board that ship now. we were passing by and who being alone a man overboard we need usually started to rescue boats on to the water areas saying so we can eat couldn't. see everybody up in the water it's a lucky coincidence moved gary because two other ships didn't even stop to help. us upwards of a hundred people are still missing and the human tragedy this is unfolding here is
3:07 am
far from over on the banks or in the water of people here on the banks that are waiting we try to speak to them they really don't want to speak to cameras they're holding their heads down in silence they are in agony waiting for any possible news a very relative and they're terrified that their relatives are never going to be heard from again. from battle reporting there still no official accounts as to why the ship went down recovery efforts are underway at the site of the disaster details on the progress of the operation cost to our correspondent it's run over now. what are officials saying about this really holding out hope of finding anyone else and. well what we're hearing is that right. it's all still continuing however following the grisly discovery of around one hundred bodies trapped under water to people just couldn't get off the boat the process of removing those bodies is
3:08 am
underway however divers that it's taking part in operation are being hampered to strong winds strong currents. the vessel itself is is leaking fuel all of those factors combining to make their job all that more difficult however rescue workers are saying that they haven't given up hope just yet of finding anybody else still alive. risky operations are being carried out sure divers started at first light while police are operating twenty four hours of training there is as yet no information about those who have drowned risky operation there are still ongoing some people might have been able to swim to the islands there are many islands across a kilometer away from where the ship sank will continue their search until everyone is found. as far as response from russia's political elite president dmitry medvedev has said said said that he wants a full investigation into why this was able to happen also the emmet minister for
3:09 am
emergencies here in russia has said that he needs to see a report on his desk very soon telling him why this was allowed to happen. the main goal is to survey the shores divide them into sections from people responsible for each other all the island should be checked for survivors and i want to see a final report only once we know for certain there's no one there. or one of the reasons this tragedy was able to catch so many people out was due to just how quick the boat sank now we're here around three minutes from the moment they realized they were in trouble until it be forgetting who was making its way to the bottom of the volga river so quickly that they couldn't. they couldn't the lifeboats people didn't have enough time to put on the life jackets and that's led to such a loss of life. it's a very distressing d.d. has anything been said their last possible cause of the tragedy. when
3:10 am
investigations are underway to determine exactly what happened and how this was able to happen those investigations of course now in the very very early stages all we can do is really speculate upon what we know now the the explanation for how this happened it seems to spring first to everybody's mind is is over crowding the boat itself was licensed to carry one hundred twenty people we're hearing they could have been almost two hundred board so the company that was operating this pleasure cruise certainly going to come in for some streets and that isn't the only explanation it could have been they are drilling out whether there was some form of technical failure or not resulted in in the boat sinking of the boat itself first set sail in one thousand nine hundred fifty five so not a new vessel by any means however it did pass full inspections full safety inspections as recently as the middle of last month so it was passed as being up to
3:11 am
spec as it were even though it was such an old craft but those investigations into it what caused this tragedy in that early stages at the moment but the the main. the main idea that seems to spring to everybody's mind is just the boat was seriously overcrowded. thank you for the update. well that we can give you some more details about the ship itself and your blog area as it was called double decker pleasure boat built in the former truck is a vacuum one hundred fifty from the ship was used for day trips along the volga river popular with tourists in the summer months tension has been drawn to. the speculation that played a role in the tragedy the ship had not been updated for more than fifty years. transport minister confirmed it. was deemed to be safe the engines and rescue navigation equipment had all been checked. was capable of tracking at
3:12 am
speeds of up to twenty two kilometers. of course we'll be keeping up to date with that rescue operation throughout the day here on r.t. . the other news now are five people have been killed after a plane was forced to make an emergency landing on water in eastern siberia there were thirty six people on board the north which got into trouble after reporting a fire and its engines for the survivors a set of suffered severe injuries playing its running rhythm several people are still missing the search operation is underway. and major effort is underway to kick start the stall palestinian israeli peace talks based right a quartet comprised of the u.n. russia european union and the u.s. and we think washington later today appreciations ground to a halt last year when israel fails to renew a partial freeze all settlement construction in the west bank palestinians who
