much remained on the top of it with more than one hundred years of around shock relatives struggle to accept how to our loved ones were dragged to their deaths when the boat sank within minutes. five pm in moscow line matras a continuing today's breaking news coverage here on r t divers in the volga river are undertaking the grim task over achieving those killed when their pleasure cruiser sank on sunday in central russia they are earlier reported finding more than one hundred bodies trapped inside the sunken wall garia archies correspondents are following developments tom barton is in a rescue operation headquarters near tatarstan and italian overcover is live for us in moscow hello to you both first it tom. how's the rescue of the recovery
9:02 am
operation progressing at this moment. well not it currently stands rather like this there were now two hundred eight people said to be on the boat after some debate about that that's been settled two hundred eighty three hundred eighty people which is far more than the boat was supposed to hold one hundred forty there's eighty of those that have been rescued and at the moment there's fifty three bodies that have been recovered from the ship we spoke to the emergencies ministry earlier which is coordinating efforts here but they said the prospect of finding other people survivors is now bleak. and this is from the. divers a sweep in the bottom of the river both been searched by sectors index to examine it closer but there is very bad visibility the waves are quite high and this is also making the ramp difficult apartments are specialised there is almost no chance of finding any more survivors still both banks and the ship will be checked.
9:03 am
divers have been working around the clock in shifts on a special platform above where the ship lays on the river bet to try to explore the ship and to extract the bodies from it it's they are now approaching one particular room in the ship the play room where lots of children went to play and indeed between thirty and fifty children were thought to be there just minutes before the boat began to sink. they're going to try and possibly raise the ship as well i think he about bringing special craft up from volga grass but he said the process of raising that ship and to helping conduct the investigation could take four to five days extra. so tragic news there sort of tell you the president quickly mobilized an investigation into all of this what really made better than say. the
9:04 am
word russian president held a special meeting regarding this tragedy does not solve the country's emergencies mississippi shape and he's set up a special states commission to investigate into the case and find those responsible he's made the heads of the commission the russian transport ministry. i want the prosecutor general's office to check for compliance with the political transport regulations by the owners of that vessel the state officials that certified it is suitable for cruising and generally everyone related to the organization of this cruise especially considering the fact there were so many children on board the ship the results of that investigation should be summed up not only in relation to this specific catastrophe but in relation to all vessels of his class and other classes as well the number of decrepit barges cruising along our waterways is enormous and the fact that we were lucky before yesterday doesn't mean anything like that couldn't have happened it did happen and with the most
9:05 am
grave consequences. this is a very good video announced the keys that your life its wealth is going to be a national day of mourning in russia to remember the victims of this horrible tragedy and unfortunately according to the russian and her disease ministry the number of victims is raising increasing by the hour as there's very little chance at this point that more people that were own that boat will be safe present but if all soused ordered to. check out on who are similar vessels that are maybe traveling anywhere in russia to make sure this situation does not repeat itself as according to him one of the main reasons why it happened was because the ship was really old and was not supposed to be sailing anymore. and italia were investigators considering when it comes to establishing the cause of the tragedy. it was the president it has to main reasons probably because it was very rules and
9:06 am
all other reasonings are can be easily derived from that one it's a sum of reasons really some are saying that's the that particular vessel did not have a permission a license to transport passengers in the first place there are other reports it is saying that the capacity of it was one hundred and twenty people on it had over two hundred people one board when it sank are other reasons being manes is that's one of their boats and gins was not working but according to the owner of the vessel even if that was the case he claims that so the bustling could carry on but the trip anyway even with one broken engine some eyewitnesses saying that the weather was really stormy and to cool these a very wide river to the storms and the winds can get really strong there and what is really cool so those people who stayed in the waters for two hours waiting for
9:07 am
how so. interested me get that signed and some survivors of this royal tragedy is saying that's as they try to actually get that people cells from those emergency exits were not again referring to you is that that the boat was really will. go back to you tom this is obviously been a absolutely devastating time for the relatives of the victims and the survivors have any of them speaking about what happened. well not they've been very reluctant to talk there's been a group of them here at the base camp on the bank of the vulgar all day waiting desperately for any news of their loved ones all relatives and they've not been keen to talk to anyone else about it just to give you a flavor really of the kind of thing that they have heard about and some of them have actually been through the survivors picture the scene at two pm yesterday when
9:08 am
the boat was cruising along the volga a very popular waterway for a lot of a lot of cruise boats to come along in the sun a lot of people enjoying the afternoon there and suddenly it all went horribly wrong most of the problems stem from the fact the boat sank so fast in just three minutes which resulted in absolute chaos and board not enough time even for people to put life jackets on to try and get into the water and many of this. rapid fire back you ation of the boat caused families to be torn apart and some terrible personal stories but from the few people that have talked about their experiences we heard of one five year old boy who was rescued he lost his mother and his grandmother in the waters he was about to go under himself when he grasped the hand above him the hand of a man he didn't know the man rescued him and it later transpired that that man had lost his pregnant wife also another man also with
9:09 am
a pregnant wife was separated from his wife when she. tried to go and help her friends he grabbed the only thing that was dear and close to him his son jumped into the water but so strong with the currents and so cold was the water that he saw his son slip away from his arms and die in front of him this is some of the the power of the tragedy to happen in such a short space of time and this is meant that not only have people been grieving and very stressed today but also there's been some rather nasty allegations thrown around they're not yet cooperated but some of the the findings from the boat may support some of what people have been saying one of the unnamed staff member on the boat said that they tried to convince the captain not to go on the voyage in the first place one of the engines wasn't working properly but the boat was tilting to one side but the captain ignored that warning also that some of the emergency exits
9:10 am
were blocked as soon as you heard from my my colleague and some of the people have said that the treatment of this by the emergency services yesterday they seemed very full of very full of optimism that that everyone would be rescued all the people would be survivors today that's a complete reversal really all of those that have not yet been rescued it seems are feared to be dead and this is obviously very little grief in fact some people are calling it giving it false hope to people of the of those desperate to hear anything of those that they care about. from a summer dream to a nightmare in a matter of minutes. of course of my child remained on that boat. but. it was a sunday afternoon when the holiday river cruiser bold garia run into difficulties on the volga catastrophe came swiftly to think of it is that people were basically
9:11 am
buried alive in time metal coffin. we managed to get out through the windows i was there with my ten year old daughter i couldn't rescue her she swallowed too much water when i was pulled out i realized my child was gone. the bulgarian now lies at the bottom. of the vessel saying can listen three minutes it flipped to the right then i swerved and went down we were literally thrown out and that's how we survived our whole family was on that ship we lost everybody my wife and grandchildren two vessels passed by and didn't even care to stop and we chatted helping and we spent around two hours in the water before we were rescued i swam around searching for survivors and couldn't find anybody so there were a lot of children on the ship they were all in a going through it was impossible for me to get out of there my grandson would be five years old tomorrow we went on the ship to celebrate with birthday. many of the

passengers were families with children on a weekend sightseeing great survivors and relatives powerless to act and now able only to wait. we think we are telephoning everyone trying to learn anything about our dear ones we called the police but they said to contact the search and rescue service we did but there was no reply so we came here to find out at least something but even here nobody knows anything. it's horrible we haven't the slightest knowledge of what's going on they should give us at least some information we're calling the search and rescue service but they don't answer the phone. as many as fifty of the passengers were under eighteen years old hold into the volga three kilometers but these people behind me are just some other relatives desperate for news about their loved ones and what was a pleasure boat cruise for them turned into a living nightmare. an r.t.
9:13 am
the volga bank central russia. r.t. has been speaking with a director of mass transport here explain what might have caused the bug to sink so fast. it's hard to name the reasons for this sinking of the cruise and before we speak to all the witnesses i think there were a number of factors human error weather conditions we know there was a storm and other factors but i would rule out overcrowding because also of this time can carry up to four hundred fifty people and it doesn't matter whether there were one hundred fifty or two hundred on board the thing that is very striking is that the boat went down so quickly we haven't had events like this in the past fifty years at least so the fact that there was a storm and eliminator windows were probably open and led to eat possibly filling up with what are quite quickly especially when he leaned to one site the illuminatus would have been closed before it entered it is a war. there have been here are the main points so far over the boat

tragedy divers have now recovered fifty three bodies from the doomed pleasure cruiser that sank sunday in the boulder river in russia's republic of tatarstan it's thought about a third of the vote has been checked but some areas remain out of reach more than one hundred bodies many of them children remain trapped inside and regencies ministry says there is not little hope of finding anyone else alive today has been declared a national day of mourning president medvedev has ordered an investigation into why the ship sank saying got to credit presell shouldn't be still cruising the country's waterways at all investigative committee believes a critical technical failure is to blame for the catastrophe r.t. is following developments as they unfold and we'll keep you informed as they develop. turning out of the other main news on our teacher trouble brewing for italy as the country edges closer to becoming the fourth european nation in need of a bailout its debt is surging past earnings raising fears over whether its high in
9:15 am
banks can pass the e.u. stress test that's forcing a borrowing costs senior officials will talk later on monday but since italy's one of the bigger players on the continent saving it won't come cheap for more on this hundred by johan done over belt in brussels he's the editor in chief of belgium's leading business magazine thank you very much for joining us here on r t and now italy's recognize that there is a problem but this recognizing that eventually turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy that forces a country like italy deeper into trouble with the potential of pulling the rest of the eurozone with it. well indeed italy is a totally other ballgame than the countries we've seen passing through these problems and therefore i'm referring to greece ireland and portugal just give it a little bit of a perspective these three countries together the smaller can use in six percent of the euro g.d.p. italy represents seventeen percent of g.d.p. of the euro in g.d.p.
9:16 am
which means that italy in its own is almost three times as big as the smaller countries want to go together so this is really something quite frightening and if indeed italy really goes into big trouble on the financial markets this is certainly a totally new face of this euro crisis a new dimension now in terms of the scale of italy's economy as you had mentioned as large as the as large as greece portugal ireland come by and do you think that it will be all but impossible to prop up economy of this size. well it will be certainly very difficult and the major question with respect to this issue is what will be the attitudes of germany and the other countries that still have a aaa rating and it certainly means that you would you would have to beef up the stabilization for at least double the amount that is in it at the moment and it
9:17 am
is everybody's guess or not whether germany. holland filament and a few of the other countries are prepared to put up this kind of money or the input of the guarantees so that liberalization from the can raise the money but that would be really a very. issue for the whole. where do you see the euro shapes heading they can see they could see good money being thrown after bad in the case of greece and as i understand it there's been a three billion euro package that's been approved for the country doesn't this show that cash can't be the only solution. well that's already so from the beginning of this crisis i myself for example that several brands are already there throwing money at the problem going to it's greece portugal ireland and certainly not also italy that is not enough or that can't solve the problem on its own what you need
9:18 am
is to have growth economic growth so that these countries then have potential again in the future and raise the revenues with which to balance their books so we're talking here about structural reforms. micro economic reforms tax reforms to get the growing machine growth of these going to go again because when you also italy is planned to have this year almost no economic growth. do longer is euro skeptics are if you want to call the many of them have had their knives out since day one but part of it is still cleaning i think the euro zone kind of ride out the storm or was something like a crisis in italy eventually be the straw that breaks the camel's back well one of us to realize that enormous amounts of what i call political capital as been invested in this euro project so giving it up is a very tough discussion is a very tough decision and a decision that will be made just overnight so
9:19 am
a lot of energy and a lot of additional money will certainly be spent before we arrive at such a situation and according to me there is no such decision on the horizon but like i said in the beginning if italy comes into the ballgame with the amounts that are involved in this country that might change things quite rapidly. all right you have got over delta editor in chief belgium's leading business magazine thanks very much for joining us here on our quiz. five people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a political rally in northwest pakistan it's the latest violence in the taliban stronghold and comes after pakistan said it could manage without the emir billion dollars military aid that the u.s. is currently holding back it's not washington's decision is retaliation if there is a lot about expelling more than one hundred u.s. military advisers u.s.
