9:01 am
and to extract the bodies from it it's there are now approaching one particular room in the ship the play room where lots of children went to play and indeed between thirty and fifty children were thought to be there just minutes before the boat began to sink. they're going to try and possibly raise the ship as well i think about bringing special craft up from volgograd but they said the process of raising that ship and to helping conduct the investigation could take four to five days extra. tragic news there so i'd tell you the president quickly mobilized an investigation into all of this what three medved have been saying. were russian president held a special meeting regarding this tragedy does not stop with the country's emergencies minister city sure it will and he's set up a special states commission to investigate into the case and find those responsible
9:02 am
he's made the heads of all of the commission wasn't just sport ministry. which i want the prosecutor general's office to check for compliance with the political transport regulations by the owners of that vessel the state officials that certified it as suitable for cruising and generally everyone related to the organization of this cruise especially considering the fact there were so many children on board the ship the results of that investigation should be summed up and not only in relation to this specific catastrophe but in relation to all vessels of this class and other classes as well the number of decrepit barges cruising along our waterways is enormous and the fact that we were lucky before yesterday doesn't mean anything like that couldn't have happened it did happen and with the most grave consequences. she. is a first announced a tease the july that swells is going to be a national day of mourning russia to remember the victims of this. orrible tragedy
9:03 am
and unfortunately according to the russian and merges ministry the number of victims is raising increasing by the hour as there's very little chance at this point that's more people that's were owned that boat will be safe to present but it is also as ordered to. check out upon pool similar vessels that it may be traveling anywhere in russia to make sure this situation does not repeat itself as according to him one of the main reasons why it happened was because the ship was really old and was not supposed to be sailing in and we're. going to tell you what are investigators considering when it comes to establishing the cause of the tragedy. well as the president has said the main reason is probably because it was very old and all other reasonings are can be easily derived from that one it's a sum of reasons really so you're saying that's the that particular vessel did not have a permission a license to transport passengers in the first place there are other reports of
9:04 am
a saying that's the capacity over there was only one hundred and twenty people and it had over two hundred people on board when it sank are the reasons being mains is that's one of the boats engines was not working but according to the owner of the vessel even if that was the case he claims that so the vessel could carry on with the trip anyway even with one broken engine some eyewitnesses saying that the weather was really stormy and to all these a very wide river to the storms and the winds can get really strong there in the wood is really cool so those people who stayed in the waters for two hours waiting for how. just didn't make it through that sign and some survivors sold this sort of tragedy a saying that's as they try to actually it back in. and cells from that those
9:05 am
emergency exits were blocked again referring to the stat that the boat was really will. go back to you tom this is obviously been an absolutely devastating time for the relatives of the victims and the survivors have any of them in speaking about what happened. well now they've been very reluctant to talk there's been a group of them here at the base camp on the bank of the volga all day waiting desperately for any news of their loved ones all relatives and they've not been keen to talk to anyone else about it just to give you a flavor really of the kind of thing that they have heard about and some of them have actually been through the survivors picture the scene at two pm yesterday when the boat was cruising along the volga a very popular waterway for a lot of for a lot of cruise boats to come along in the summer a lot of people enjoying the afternoon there and suddenly it all went horribly wrong most of the problems stem from the fact the boat sank so fast in just three
9:06 am
minutes which resulted in absolute chaos and board not enough time even for people to put life jackets on to try and get into the water and many of this this rapid evacuation of boat caused families to be torn apart and some terrible personal stories that from the few people that have talked about their experiences we heard of one five year old boy who was rescued he lost his mother and his grandmother in the waters he was about to go under himself when he grasped the hand above him the hand of a man he didn't know the man rescued him and it later transpired that that man had lost his pregnant wife also another man also with a pregnant wife was separated from his wife when she tried to go and help her friends he grabbed the only thing that was dear and close to him his son jumped into the water but so strong with the currents and so cold was the water. but he
9:07 am
saw his son slip away from his arms and die in front of him this is some of the the power of the tragedy that happened in such a short space of time and this is meant that not only have people been grieving and very stressed today but also there's been some rather nasty act allegations thrown around there not yet cooperated but some of the findings from the boat may support some of these what people have been saying one of the unnamed staff member on the boat said that they tried to convince the captain not to go on the voyage in the first place one of the engines wasn't working properly but the boat was tilting to one side but the captain ignored that warning also that some of the emergency exits were blocked as you heard from my my colleague and some of the people have said that the treatment of this by the emergency services yesterday they seemed very full of very full of optimism that that everyone would be rescued that all the
9:08 am
people would be survivors today that's a complete reversal really all of those that have not yet been rescued it seems are feared to be dead and this is obviously very little grief and in fact some people are calling it giving it false hope to people of the of those desperate to hear anything of those that they care about. from a summer dream to a nightmare in a matter of minutes to go to over the last course of my child remained on that boat . but. it was a sunday afternoon when the holiday river cruz a bold garia run into difficulties on the volga catastrophe came swiftly if you think of it didn't is that people were basically buried alive in time metal coffin we managed to get out through the windows i was there with my ten year old daughter i couldn't rescue han she swallowed too much water when i was pulled out. my child
9:09 am
was gone. the ball garia now lies at the bottom of. the vessel sank in listen three minutes it flipped to the right then i swerved and went down and we were literally thrown out and that's how we survived our whole family was on that ship we lost everybody my wife and my grandchildren to vessels pass by and didn't even care to stop and reach out a helping hand we spent around two hours in the water before we were rescued i swam around searching for survivors and couldn't find anybody so there were a lot of children on the ship they were all in the going through it was impossible for me to get out of there my grandson would be five years old tomorrow we went on the ship to celebrate my birthday. many of the passengers were families with children on a weekend sightseeing the great survivors and relatives powerless to act are now able to wait and ask. me if we are telephoning everyone trying to learn
9:10 am
anything about our dear ones we called the police but they said to contact the search and rescue service we did but there was no reply so we came here to find out at least something but even here nobody knows anything. it's horrible we haven't the slightest knowledge of what's going on they should give us at least some information we're calling the search and rescue service but they don't ask for the firm. as many as fifty of the passengers were under eighteen years old hold into the volga three kilometers about these people behind me are just some of the relatives desperate for news about their loved ones and what was a pleasure boat cruise for them turned into a living nightmare. the volga bank central russia. art has been speaking with the director of moscow's river transport here explain what might have caused the boat to sink so fast. because it's hard to name the reasons for the
9:11 am
sinking of the cruiser before we speak to all the witnesses i think there were a number of factors human error weather conditions we know there was a storm and other factors but i would rule out overcrowding because both of these time can carry up to four hundred fifty people and it doesn't matter whether there were one hundred fifty or two hundred on board the thing that is very striking is that the boats went down so quickly we haven't had events like this in the past fifty years at least so the fact that there was a storm and the eliminator windows were probably open led to eat possibly filling up with water quite quickly especially when it leaned to one site the eliminators should have been closed before it entered the reservoir. there have been here are the main points so far of the boat tragedy tragedy divers have now recovered fifty three bodies from the doomed pleasure cruiser that sank sunday in the boulder river in russia's republic of tatarstan it's thought about a third of the boat has been checked but some areas remain out of reach more than
9:12 am
one hundred bodies many of them children remain trapped inside emergencies ministry says there is now little hope of finding anyone else alive whose day has been declared a national day of mourning president medvedev has ordered an investigation into why the ship sank saying that the credit vessels shouldn't be still cruising the country's waterways at all investigative committee believes a critical technical failure is to blame for the catastrophe r.t. is following developments as they unfold and we'll keep you fully informed as they develop. turning now to the other main news on r t trouble brewing for italy as the country edges closer to becoming the fourth european nation in need of a battle out its debt is surging past earnings raising fears over whether italian banks can pass the e.u. stress test that's forcing a borrowing costs senior officials will talk later on monday but since italy's one of the bigger players on the continent saving it won't come cheap for more on this hundred by johan van overtveldt in brussels he's the editor in chief of belgium's

leading business magazine thank you very much for joining us here on r t now italy's recognize that there is a problem but does recognizing that eventually turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy that forces a country like italy deeper into trouble with the potential of pulling the rest of the eurozone with it. will indeed it leaves the other bowl game then the countries passing through these problems before i'm referring to greece ireland import to go just to give you a little bit of a perspective these three countries together these moment can use in six percent of the euro. pleasance said. per cent of g.d.p. of the euro in g.d.p. which means that italy. is almost three times as big as the smaller countries important go together so this is really something quite frightening and if indeed italy really goes into big trouble on the financial markets this is certainly
9:14 am
a totally new face of this euro crisis new dimension now in terms of the scale of italy's economy as you had mentioned as large as the as large as greece portugal ireland come by and do you think that it will be all but impossible to prop up economy of this size. well it will be certainly very difficult and the major question with respect to this issue is what will be the attitude of germany and the other countries that still have a aaa rating and it certainly means that you would too we would have to beef up the stabilization fund at least double the amount that is in it at the moment and it is everybody's guess to know or not whether germany. holland finland and a few of the other people in the countries are prepared to put up this kind of money or to put up the guarantees so that we double ization front can raise the
9:15 am
money but that would be really a very. issue for the whole. that's where you see the euro chiefs heading they can see they could see good money being thrown after bad in the case of greece and as i understand it there has been a three billion euro package that's been approved for the country doesn't this show that cash can't be the only solution. well that's already so from the beginning of this crisis i myself for example are several times already that throwing money at the problem whether it's greece portugal ireland and certainly not also italy. that is not enough or that can solve the problem on its own what you need is to have growth economic growth so that these countries don't have potential again with respect to the future and can raise the revenues with which to balance their books so we're talking here about structural reforms. micro economic reforms tax
9:16 am
reforms to get the groom machine growth machine of these going to go again because mind you also italy is planned to have this year almost no economic growth. now the euro doom mongers euro skeptics are we want to call them many of them have had their knives out since day one but talked about a still clinging on do you think euro zone can ride out the storm or was something like a crisis in italy eventually be the straw that breaks the camel's back. well one of us to realize that enormous amounts so far as i call political capital as been this that the euro project so giving it up is a very tough. decision and a decision that will be made just overnight so a lot of energy and a lot of additional money will certainly be spent in. such a situation and according to me there is no such decision on the horizon but like i
9:17 am
said in the beginning if italy comes into these ballgame with the amounts that are involved with this country that might change things quite rapidly. all right johana van overtveldt editor in chief of belgium's leading business magazine thanks very much for joining us here on r.t. . five people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a political rally in northwest pakistan is the latest volley violence in the taliban stronghold and comes after pakistan said it couldn't manage without the emir billion dollar military aid that the u.s. is currently holding back it's not washington's decision is retaliation if there is a lot about expelling more than one hundred u.s. military advisers u.s. pakistani relationship has been strained since the killing of osama bin laden in may and u.s. drone attacks that have killed civilians the white house says is a lot about is an important ally in the war on terror but that the relationship must be worked on over time journalist ahmed correction he says the bitterness is going to be tough to fix. i don't think we're seeing any signs that the u.s.

officials are really sincere about the relationship. as a relationship between two independents are the ones that would like to work together ten years ago. it was really very hard to find a clean clean shaven buckstone you criticize in the united states it was it was taken for granted if you're criticizing the u.s. you must be some radical extremist but today you have people from the. upper classes of somebody really lead and very very critical of the united states so i think there's something really wrong and i think there is a huge responsibility also in the of the u.s. media to convey the right cure to the american public media which is unfortunately they're not doing their very much telling the it ever is the line of the u.s. government so i think i don't see the near future many of the serious differences
