a five year old who was saved who lost his mother and his grandmother who drowned and then jumped into the water to try and save himself and just as he thought he was drowning he reached up and grabbed a hand he saw he didn't know whose it was to belong to a gentleman who saved his life it was later found out that that man had lost his pregnant wife in the sinking of the ship another man also with a pregnant wife lost contact with her as she ran to help friends in the frantic scramble to get off the boat he grabbed the nearest and dearest thing to him his young son and jumped into the water with him but the currents were too strong the water was too cold and he was pulled away from him and he had to watch his son drown before his eyes these are just two of the examples of the horrifying spectacle that played itself out when people had to get off this boat so fast and many of them didn't the people waiting on the banks and in nearby khazan upstream which was to be the final destination of the boat today are still desperately

waiting for any news of their relatives but from the rescuers themselves hope of finding any more survivors has all but run out. when you know you know you both lean the bed there are three of them in the cabin my son my daughter in law and my grandson my son said he tried to open the cabin door holding his child when the wave crashed into them and he lost a group of my grandson he says you swim towards the light and made it out alive but i can't find my grandson or daughter in law they're not on the new list now i'm waiting to see photos. this is a typical story heard by many people either relatives or survivors of the sinking of the ship and all they can do now is wait. thank you tom now turning to tell you last hour the president quickly mobilized the inquiry into how this happened what president i've ever been saying. was different president between the how the

special meeting regarding this incident and he's matts with the country's emergencies minister said detroit we were ordered to start up eight earth special states committee to investigate into the states and russian transport minister is going to be the house for the committee presently it is also announced that tuesday july the twelfth is going to be a day of national mourning of those victims who perished in this horrible accident and a number of victims is increasing by the hour as the russian emergencies ministry for its there is less and less chance or if there's any to say those people who are on the. huge i want the prosecutor general's office to check for compliance with the political transport regulations by the owners of the vessel the state officials that certified it is suitable for cruising and generally everyone related to the organization of this cruise especially considering the fact there was so many
11:04 am
children on board the ship the results of that investigation should be summed up and not only in relation to this specific catastrophe but in relation to all vessels of this class and other classes as well the number of decrepit barges cruising along our waterways is enormous and the fact that we were lucky before yesterday doesn't mean anything like that couldn't have happened it did happen and with the most grave consequences. russian president dmitry medvedev believes that one of the main reasons that could have caused this incident was the fact that the boat was really old and only other reports that we're getting can be pretty much should deploy from what he's saying we're hearing reports that the boat did not have a choice since to transport best injures in the first place other reports say that . the capacity of the vessel was holy for one hundred and twenty people and so at the time of the accident there was over two hundred people on board of the boats are also the brits saying that's one of the engines broke down and the captain of
11:05 am
the vessel actually knew about it but decided to proceed with the boat trip anyway the owner of the boat at the same time is saying that even and that's again that was the case in the one over the engines didn't break down it would not have caused this horrible tragedy other reports are saying that of course it was a very old ship that was sailing since nineteen fifty five so all of the bomb could have caused this tragedy but some of the eyewitnesses saying that's where the conditions in the region at the time were very values very strong winds and some of the survivors are actually saying that's as they were trying to evacuate from of the boat so many of the emergency exits were blocked again referring to the fact that the boat was really old so to sum up it all comes down to a vessel that was not properly prepared for a very long time and many blame it on

a human mistake. or an entire you know back to tom what is the status of the recovery operation. well you can see this small strip of the sun behind me this is become really the launchpad of the emergency services efforts to try and recover at first they hope survivors and now route to recover bodies from the sunken ship hour after hour three back through today through last night and yesterday afternoon teams of divers have gone out to a special platform is being constructed and they've been going down they've supplied us with a video quite a graphic video showing them going into the ship and bringing up bodies from the ship then now expected to be possibly starting what may be the the the toughest part of their exploration through the ship going into what's being called the play room or the games room area on one of the upper decks of the ship and as the ship sank it was said by eyewitnesses that there were thirty to fifty children maybe
11:07 am
a third of the passengers of children playing who would all gather to play in that room and it was said by witnesses that there were so many children in that room that they just couldn't get out in time and it's feared that they may all have drowned inside that room so for the rescuers themselves but obviously for the people on shore this next part of the recovery operation could indeed prove to be quite a nightmare and seeing that come ashore i think the people who have been waiting for answers might unfortunately get the answers that they were dreading it. from a summer dream to a nightmare in a matter of minutes. our child remained on that boat. it was a sunday afternoon when the holiday river cruz garia run into difficulties on the volga catastrophe came swiftly through much of it. people were basically

buried alive in giant metal coffin we managed to get out through the windows i was there with my ten year old daughter i couldn't rescue her she swallowed too much water when i was pulled out i realised my child was gone. the bog area now lies at the bottom. of the vessel saying can listen three minutes it flipped to the right then i swerved and went down and we were literally thrown out and that's how we survived our whole family was on that ship we lost everybody my wife and the grandchildren two vessels passed by and didn't even care to stop and reach out to a helping hand we spent around two hours in the water before we were rescued i swam around searching for survivors and couldn't find anybody so there were a lot of children on the ship they were all in the games room it was impossible for me to get out of there my grandson would be five years old tomorrow we went on the ship to celebrate my birthday. many of the passengers were families with children

on a weekend sightseeing. survivors and relatives powerless to act and now able to wait . we are telephoning everyone trying to learn anything about our dear ones we called the police but they said to contact the search and rescue service we did but there was no reply so we came here to find out at least something but even here nobody knows anything. it's horrible we haven't the slightest knowledge of what's going on they should give us at least some information we're calling the search and rescue service but i don't ask for the phone. as many as fifty of the passengers were under eighteen years old hold into the volga three kilometers but these people behind me are just some of the relatives desperate for news about their loved ones and what was a pleasure boat cruise has for them turned into a living nightmare. the volga bank central russia art has been hearing from
11:10 am
a river transport supervisor who told us that it's the port authorities who are responsible for safety and for letting the boat leave the dock in the first place but. you know with it's a very old ship it shouldn't have been used moreover it was built to correspond with the safety requirements of the one nine hundred fifty s. and one criteria has changed to boats condition hadn't which we have to find out of the sunken cruiser had been tested in a timely inferior way plus the boat was overcrowded with around two hundred people on board which is a serious violation and it should have been allowed to leave port there's also information that one of the engines wasn't working properly and no checks were done in this regard this type of boat is prohibited from leaving ports in bad weather when waves threaten to reach two meters this is considering there was information of a storm but the port authorities are responsible for all those safety breaches. that's a recap now our breaking news story the tragedy on the crow a cruise

is certainly a totally new phase of this euro crisis with new dimension throwing money at the problem going to be greece portugal ireland and certainly not also italy that is not enough or that can't solve the problem on its own enormous amounts of what i call political capital as been invested in this in the euro project so giving it up is a very tough decision and a decision that will be made just overnight so a lot of energy and a lot of additional money will certainly be spent before we arrive at such a situation and according to me there is no such decision on the horizon if italy comes into this ballgame with the amounts that are involved with this country that might change things quite rapidly. five people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a political rally in northwest pakistan it's the latest violence in the taliban stronghold and comes after pakistan said it could manage without the near billion
