2:03 pm
international media. crisis for gas from energy may. well have more in the. international news and. ten pm in the russian capital after months of political squabbling in the shadow of a looming default the u.s. can finally breathe a sigh of relief. deal to raise the country's boring limit the final hurdle for the bill after being given the go ahead in the lower house on monday and our correspondent on of has the latest for us in washington d.c. . being waited for with baited breath around the world has no. well around the world and perhaps no one has been holding his breath more than president obama
2:04 pm
right here in washington of course the president did come out and speak earlier he called this crisis a so-called manufactured crisis saying that it shouldn't have taken the risk of a default like a task for a few for a washington to get its after work together interesting words but of course we can't neglect the fact that both the president as well as the both both of the political parties are all equally to blame for the big picture economic crisis that has brought the united states to this next one which now what this deal does is essentially raises the borrowing limit of the united states while cutting spending by about two point four trillion dollars there's a lot of sort of strings attached in order to raise that debt deal debt limit and the reason that we saw this battle over this fairly routine vote the raising the debt limit keep in mind is something this country has done more than one hundred times since one thousand nine hundred eighty s. what we saw what was different this time is that this became a proxy ideological war between the republicans in congress and the democrats now
2:05 pm
of course we are entering an election year and so the republicans chose this time to sort of dig in their heels and to really fight with the democrats over issues that both sides are diametrically opposed to what do these so-called tea party republicans they're right when republicans want no taxes much lower taxes they want very little government spending with the exception on occasion to of course defense spending democrats meanwhile want to keep spending on social programs at high levels they want to close with they call corporate tax loopholes and essentially have the wealthiest folks in the society. on the economy now at this at this stage in the economic game both courses are unsustainable of course we ended up seeing this political battle erupt bringing the nation to the brink of a first ever default and the irony at the end of the day is that both sides walked away very very unhappy with this deal that essentially kicked the can. down the road we're going to be seeing this super commission and congress figuring out what
2:06 pm
exactly the united states is going to cut in terms of spending in about november december time and so unfortunately this debt limit crisis has been averted but it looks like the big fiscal debate still hot and going well as you say of course despite being agreed to today. immediate default and then saw indeed warning its long term prospects for the u.s. economy really only looking so good tell us more about. well there not we have to keep in mind one of the things that this legislation does is essentially guarantees that there will not be any more stimulus spending so in the short term there's going to be huge effects were of course dealing with a country the united states that has abysmal unemployment rate levels at nine point two percent the g.d.p. has barely been growing one point three percent over the last quarter the housing crisis still an issue and in the long term this legislation does nothing to assure world markets that the united states is on a sustainable fiscal path as i said earlier does kick the can down the road and so
2:07 pm
world markets are standing by they don't know exactly where the united states will cut taxes will be increased whether revenue the problem in and so the ratings agencies have also sort of remained a mom on this we did see it come out and say that essentially the triple a rating will not be threatened or the united states of course which was not the one that threatened to downgrade at any point in this crisis we're still waiting to see where standard and poor's stands on this they want to see cuts of about four trillion dollars the deal only promises about half that amount and moody's has still been silent so a lot of questions and of course the biggest the biggest losers in this whole deal are the american people who are simply struggling to get along to survive in what has been one of the most catastrophic recessions this country has seen in a long long time thanks very much indeed for. that washington studio well let's get some more now on what's in store for the u.s.
2:08 pm
economy from. an activist from the u.s. political action group the progressive change campaign committee thanks very much indeed for joining us in the states is being passed by both houses of the u.s. congress that's the latest news of course the latest developments but does that mean the american economy and indeed the world economy around the woods now. no bill it really doesn't i mean the end of the day the bill that we got passed yesterday and finally passed through the senate today and is going to be on its way to be signed by the president it's not going to work for the american people you know the kind of austerity that is was laid out in the bill and is going to be laid out in future parts of the legislation as it gets carried out down the road it's actually going to hurt jobs which is the last thing that the american people want right now when lucy all corresponding just a few moments earlier was alluding to the the american people in hell they will be facing problems what we've course we've seen the measures taken place in the eurozone in europe do you think we could see some sort of reaction in the u.s.
2:09 pm
over this after all cuts in public spending tax rise is going to get a lot tougher for the americans are going to be moved about this well not so i'm not so hearing about tax rises for a lot of folks what i'm hearing about essentially is the cause and how they're going to impact the where we're going to hear cuts for the american people and it's going to start hitting people quite directly you know in the current the first step of the legislation you know it's going to start heating education and energy and i think about my sister who wants to be a teacher what kind of incentive does she have what kind of options are she going to have to be a teacher here in the united states. if the government is cutting money going to schools in states across the country that's not going to work for her it's not going to work for millions of middle class families across the country and you know this legislation is really going to hurt the american. regarding the domestic impact in the u.s. but ratings john fitch said that the deal means it will hold its aaa school for the
2:10 pm
u.s. at least for the moment the s. and p. interestingly has said that actually washington might be done graded and it looks as though that could happen any time tell us what impact could that have on the wider world not just the domestic economy in the u.s. . well i think the impact it's going to have on the wider world is you listen if you're hurting american consumers which at the end of the day is what's going to happen when you make these cuts to government spending that's going to limit the amount of money that americans are spending abroad and or the amount of money that they're spending on foreign goods and that's going to hurt countries across the country and you know this is a this is a move towards a sturdy that's not going to work for the american people and as a result not going to work for a lot of folks across the world the dude is viewed as less than both democrat and republican sides of the house where the ne win is. well i think i think the winners here were the tea party conservatives who got
2:11 pm
exactly what they wanted you know they're crying crocodile tears over on capitol hill but the fact of the matter is they got a bill passed through the house in the senate that doesn't have a single tax raise on the wealthiest americans and there and they got their cuts to or are moved towards cuts to the social services that they want to cut for decades so the tea party republicans got their win and unfortunately the president and far too many democrats handed to him what about the president's standing in all of this in his leadership skills will his position be battered by all of this. well listen i don't think this is going to help him with progressive certainly who are were advocating throughout the process progressive in congress and throughout the country for you know closing this deficit problem by making sure the richest of the rich are paying their fair share and it's not going to hurt it's not going to really help them with middle class and independent voters i mean these are folks that are going to be hurried by the cuts that are been put forward in the bills and
2:12 pm
there are going to be folks that are going to be upset because they're noticing that the richest of the rich the wealthiest one percent aren't paying their fair share and yet they're being asked to dig a little bit deeper the president wanted a plan that was fair and balanced and that's not the one he got been talking to investors in the poll saying the whole the resume the. investing in america but surely this sort of the latest news this all the inquisition over america's debt and of course this political wrangling will that push investors away from the u.s. this could have a long term impact in that respect well i think was i think you're definitely on to something there i think that that what could happen right now and what there is an opportunity in the second part is a second part of the implementation of this bill to really make sure we get some strong advocates on this this deficit commission in the next phase of the process and make sure that they're actually advocating for big companies like g.e. and the richest of the which to pay their fair share and making sure that that's
2:13 pm
a part of the deficit solution rather than just more and more austerity and less social services and cuts to medicare medicaid and social security benefits for american families you know if we want to strong dollar we need to be investing in americans not cutting not not cutting their paychecks and cutting the benefits that they've paid into for all their lives really interesting new of you neal thanks very much for joining us neil soroka activists from the u.s. political action group the progressive change campaign committee joining us live there in washington thank. well a fresh outbreak of violence brings more death to syria as government forces fire again on anti-government protesters the un security council has resumed discussions on the situation the country amid reports of over one hundred being killed on sunday and russia warns that any measures against syria must be restricted to solving a lot aggravating the conflict. is in new york. we do know that the u.s. and european countries are pushing for some fierce fierce resolution potentially
2:14 pm
maybe sanctions against syria stop the violence that's taking place there we do know that sanctions will not be supported by russia and possibly many other countries here security council the russian foreign ministry has said that sanctions that option sanctions are absolutely off the table russia's position is that that would it would just add more pressure to an already very sensitive and vulnerable situation that's taking place in syria we did hear that brazil's ambassador said that the country would possibly consider. supporting a presidential statement by the security council that would that would talk about or oppose any kind of ongoing violence but where the security council is divided on is where they want to please the condemnation russia china and other countries are very concerned about not condemning one side or the other not taking sides not
2:15 pm
exacerbating this problem there are many countries that are part of the security council that do not want to see a repeat of what took place when the resolution of for a campaign against libya for a no fly zone over libya was adopted and implemented and many countries including russia believe that it was actually used lawfully and has been used unlawfully and so many countries do not want to see a repeat of what is taking place in libya but there may be may be an agreement on a text for a presidential statement that would call for all the violence to end we just have to wait and see if all fifteen countries will agree on what they can say. reporting there was still ahead here on information vacuum a report on why mainstream media remains no one hundred fifty thousand israelis demanding social change. and it brings a whole new meaning to overtaking the tank versus the most elite that's what about
2:16 pm
a little later in the program. an expert independent panel says they're adults about the objectivity of ponens investigation into the plane crash that killed president lech kaczynski along with much of the country's political elite which will greet that pilot error of course the tragedy in russia last year but differences remain between its findings and those of the moscow based interstate aviation committee. has all the details for us . in general it's clear that the conclusions need earlier by the polish side and those made by the interstate aviation community here in moscow are similar in the sense that it were the actions of the pilots which caused the task but after the media conference held here in moscow by the interstate aviation committee it also it's also clear that their approach to detail is different first of all the
2:17 pm
interstate committees saying that the pilots ignored the warnings from the air traffic controller and decided to attempt to land the plane anyway despite the weather conditions it is a fact about the hand off the polish air force was present in the cockpit at the time when they were trying to land the plane and the interstate committee says that that alone can be viewed as direct psychological pressure whilst the polish side says the head of the air force was simply standing there monitoring the situation i was able to personally speak with the chief technical expert off the interstate aviation committee and here's what he had to say on this is the presence of the commander in chief of the border sheriff's office who was treated as a person who. and when commander. if like that. several times here before.
2:18 pm
so we have a technical investigation. psychological so. another issue very important. committee concluded that the airstrip itself was not ready to receive the plane or the. interstate aviation committee. to see planes and even though their world defects be could not have possibly a way to be plane crash the interstate committee is also. an independent international body while the investigation conducted by paul and was being done by a committee questioning its objectivity nato has sent more troops into kosovo after a week of conflict between ethnic albanians and serbs tensions were raised last
2:19 pm
week when police seized two checkpoints to impose a ban on imports from. a policeman peacekeeping forces under. these latest developments i'm now joined by. a serbian canadian film director joining us live here. in belgrade well last week the foreign minister there called the situation a powder keg do you think we could perhaps see the situation really explode. well the situation in kosovo is very unstable this is due to the illegal acts of the so-called government of course of all who decided to send troops from special forces from the operation and also into north kosovo and occupy two administrative crossings yachting and bring uk with the intent of imposing. customs which serbia of course does not recognize and the majority of the world and crew
2:20 pm
including russia does not recognize. is it is not helping the status of saddest talks of course on the negotiations that are due to continuous september and the whole escalation of violence is simply not going towards a peaceful solution that everybody is hoping for were nato says the additional forces are being sent to kosovo to beef up its presence but actually to replace soldiers who've been on the ground since fighting began do you think a further increase in those nato troops could indeed escalate the tensions there well they're sending five hundred fifty more german troops and one hundred fifty more austrian troops. they would not be sending troops into kosovo if they didn't estimate that the situation could explode into a larger conflict and considering that the international community has an interest in solving the so-called north cost of the issue it would not be unreasonable to suggest that they are trying to sort of fix this issue as fast as possible and i
2:21 pm
strongly believe that if force is necessary to do what they have planned they will use it well belgrade of course have this very special interests and also resolving this issue bearing in mind it's hoping to join the european union that this situation now is hardly helping the cause as it. no of course not but. it also has to be said that belgrade believes the vulgate government believes that the e.u. does not have a long term of and we must also remind ourselves that the e.u. asks of belgrade as an unwritten prerequisite to recognize close was independence and this would mean the belgrade should accept kosovo's sovereignty and territorial territorial integrity which which is very complicated to explain to the people of serbia but belgrade i think is prepared to do so in order to achieve their dream this escalation of violence of course is not helping belgrade because. the people of serbia. see this as
2:22 pm
a provocation and it is making their sentiment against reaching a compromise. not very favorable for tried your side so i think this is not definitely helping anybody in talking about negotiations and we know that the e.u. media to robert cooper he's he's been you need to sit and talk a talk with belgrade officials and all of that any chances do you think of some sort of reconciliation through negotiation or whatever the both sides are urged to negotiate it is mostly for the reason to get the serbs to accept something rarely or albanians asked to make concessions to serbian serbia has already made many concessions for the so-called republican polls so they recognize their documents their i.d.'s their license plates so i think calling for the albanians to negotiations is another call for serbs to accept more things that are just leading to serbia recognizing kosovo. thanks very much indeed. being canadian film director
2:23 pm
joining us live there from belgrade. to israel now central square has been turned into tent city crowds of protesters have expressed their discontent with soaring prices and plummeting salaries poorness their reports their peaceful demonstrations often go unnoticed by their government and by the world's mainstream media. tens of thousands on the streets of israel angry to death and protesting for change but is anyone listening when it comes to a lot of the foreign media want to see more of an action movie and this hasn't been a very violent it's been very hasn't been violent at all it's been very positive. well into week three the largest demonstration in israel in over a decade and how did a.b.c. c.b.s. and n.b.c. cover it they didn't a young a woman set up a tent while the editors of france twenty four b.b.c. and sky coughed up just
2:24 pm
a few meager seconds perhaps not even that interesting to. back you know back in the studios ok there's a protest well what exactly is a protest a social protest. it's not the same kind of story that they're used to it's not as big and dramatic as some of the bigger revolutions happening around the middle east and i mean isn't surprised by the worldwide lack of media interest he's worked in the israeli press for decades reporting from media both foreign and local there is a box that the international media has put israel in and that is the israeli palestinian conflict or so of israeli lebanese and syrian conflict and anything that doesn't kind of fed into that is not the media type of of news item which is unfortunate mistreats has been dubbed top corner by some of the people here and optimism perhaps that they can bring down the government in the way the neighbors
2:25 pm
in tough to square. bash was the cameras there were nonstop here they push ups and that just makes hundred wayas and others angry for nine days she's been camping here furious that she can't make ends meet as a university student it makes me feel sad that when egypt decided to stand up and say we've had enough and when in lebanon they. to say we've had enough the media was all over there i haven't seen anyone from c.n.n. or from fox news or any other big news channel here and it's really sad we also deserve a chance to be heard out but without foreign media the very few people even hear what. it's a missed opportunity at a crucial time just weeks before palestinians plan to announce the state. heavy traffic parking is a daily headache and just about every major city of the world people unable to find
