6:30 pm
it means that only the military mechanisms do don't work how to bring justice or accountability. i have every right to know what my government and with the want to know why i pay taxes. but i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then you glimpse something else and hear see some other part of it and realize that everything is ok you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. says. let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right here.
6:31 pm
i think iraq even funny well. whenever government says they're there to keep him safe get ready because you're going to lose your freedom. for. fear. for the.
6:32 pm
all right it's time for you said it i read it take time to respond to my brilliance and engaging viewer comments from facebook twitter and you tube because when you've got something to say i listen and first i'd like to address the happy hour segment that aired before i went on vacation or i introduced and commented on a story about a woman cutting off her husband's peanuts now my reaction which was in jest offended some of my viewers who felt that i made light of the very serious issue so please let me take this time to address some of the criticism that we've heard so far and a lot of you out there were upset because you felt like i was laughing at the issue and then encouraged violence and that's simply not true i clearly stated on air that i do not control it condone it that type of violence now if i offended you by not acting serious enough and i apologize but do not put words in my mouth and some
6:33 pm
of you took a more simplistic approach and said that my reaction to the story was a clear indication that i hate that that's just ridiculous i don't really know how to be more clear on the matter i alone accost you do not hate men in fact i really like them and finally some of you have even suggested that because of my reaction to the story i deserve to have violence inflicted upon me some viewer suggested that i have my breasts chopped off the idea of raped now if you have a problem with something i said that's five please don't pretend to take an issue with my statements which you thought encourage violence and then turn around and wish the same on me that my friends as a little thing i call hypocrisy let's move on to the next comment and reference my interview with the young turks on the debt ceiling our ted live music eighty seven said on you tube caving is a pattern with democrats it's obvious most of washington cater to the rich it's a big club and you ain't it george carlin you know i really just feel like george carlin nails it on the head. there and the longer that i live in washington d.c.
6:34 pm
the more true than i realize that it the fact is the caving of the wealthy is a wholly bipartisan affair yes the republicans might be a little worse at it but you can't depend on either party the system is corrupted by money the both parties are simply beholden to and not the american people what would be more indicative of this reality and the mad rush to create super lobbyists this way it's well congress members are getting put on the recently formed debt super committee who cares what the american people want or need the power is in the hands of those with the money to buy influence plain and simple and lastly i want to respond to a viewer who has a guest suggestion for a happy hour segment blue-green eleven thirty eight but on you tube i'd really like to see the low to show invites even called there to be only happy hour after interviewing him about his super pac his quick wit would be perfect for happy hour and shakes dig him so let me just take this moment to extend a permanent invitation to stephen called there his quick wit and good looks are welcome on the show anytime and that's it my rantings that i am going to have more for you next week. now the fight to make the way the government uses the patriot
6:35 pm
act public has been dealt yet another blow we thought about earlier on the show about the secret government interpretation of the patriot act it was revealed by senator wyden it leaving the american people out in the dark about their government actions once again and julian sanchez potato institute explained the issue and an earlier interview on our program. it means that you know the statute may say one thing that you have no idea how in practice the courts decided that should be interpreted how what's that decided to fight it really means and so now we have senators being asked to vote on something that even they and certainly the general public don't really understand well sadly that's exactly what happened senators voted on the bill and they passed it but ron wyden and mark udall both asked congress to reconsider because the provisions of the bill are so secretive that no details have been released however after requests to reconsider both the attorney general and director of national intelligence have decided to keep policy and that
6:36 pm
includes it was contentious elements called the business records provision which allows organizations like the f.b.i. to obtain personal records and other can dribble things whatever that means now sadly after dedicating months to warning the public about the secretive patriot act looks like we're going to remain out of the loop when it comes to knowing how the government is going to spy on us and how they try to justify it. well vanity fair dropped the bombshell today after getting an exclusive interview with a cyber security expert from mcafee exposing what could be the largest concerted cyber attack in history now it turns out that for the last five years operation a shady hat as they're calling it has infiltrated computer systems of over seventy two different organizations in fourteen different countries and that includes government agencies in the u.s. the u.k. japan taiwan south korea germany singapore and other nations and the operation is also targeted the international olympic committee the united nations the world
6:37 pm
anti-doping agency and the association of southeast asian nations syphon those names mcafee won't give out any more mcafee excuse me won't give out any more of the details but says that nonprofits a u.s. media organization global corporations almost every single category imaginable but they've all been hit most heavily targeted category of defense contractors thirteen of them in all according to the report the attackers have lifted it government secrets e-mail archives legal contracts and design schematics it's a sure sign that hacking is becoming a global problem so who could be behind it and we really just find this out here discuss this with me is joshua green spec cyber security fellow at the center for democracy and technology russia nice to see you again thanks for coming on but so was robert is this as big of a deal as everyone's making it seem and is this really the largest cyber attack coming from one organization or group or even one individual in history i think what's interesting about this particular attack is that it connects
6:38 pm
a bunch of disparate attacks with individual organizations to one command and control center so what's being done here is sort of taking a bunch of attacks that were at various times noticed by the organizations that they were part of and saying no this was a collective effort by one group or organization controlling one particular server now. to us exactly because they're calling it operation shady rat or remote access tools how does this all work they get on to somebody computer because they. have a virus on it and that's that they have access right so what this is this is an example of a kind of threat that we call advanced persistent threats and the way that these threats work is that individuals are specifically targeted because of their association with an organization of interest whether that organization is a defense contractor or a government agency and so on and so on those individuals are often email and
6:39 pm
spearfish sent individual crafted e-mails that are intended to make those particular individuals incidentally going to link that link leads them to a computer that infects their computer with malicious software that opens up a back door in their computer and a remote access to all the racks in operation shady rat is used by a remote operator to come in and manipulate their machine to exfiltrate data or perform some other desired action now and apparently there could be important data right these are in e-mail archives there could be government secrets because if you look at everybody that was attacked here they are government agencies defense contractors you have also various non-profits corporations even a media organization that does tell you that nobody's safe anymore these days but i think it's it's what's what's particularly difficult on the basis of this report is to know what take it and in fact sometimes even organizations that get hit by this kind of attack don't know what was taken and so there's the possibility that
6:40 pm
a great deal of sensitive information was lost there's also the possibility that i think was lost it's very difficult to know without doing a more thorough analysis of the networks that were penetrated themselves is that why nobody found out about a person to be perf i do years and that's just what they think they think that it could have been going on for longer and apparently they didn't even discover this until two thousand and nine how could nobody know it it seems. crazy to me or nor does the government know and they are just hiding it because they don't want to get embarrassed so actually what what seems to have happened is that these organizations at various times many of them actually discovered the threat or inadvertently in reforming formatting their computers cured the threat but what was not realized was that the threat had a common origin but there was one single place from which all of these attacks emanated so individual organizations might have realized hey i got penetrated or they simply might have patched their latest security software and solved the
6:41 pm
problem but the concerted attack was not recognized until recent ice let's talk about the fact that it may have all come from one place because of course. the cybersecurity apps said it's our policy we do not say who we think might get involved but they do think that it probably is a country or a nation state because they're saying that you can't get any economic gain this is all really information that might be interesting to a nation state but immediately we've seen the media and other security experts all point the finger at china and say it's them and i've seen a million headlines today i'll put china in you know into the headline even though they haven't been directly referenced right i think i think that a lot of the targets of interest are parts that would interest innovation like china they might also interest other nations i think that additional investigation would be required to say definitively this is china or this is what i think about the fact that everybody immediately jumps on china as the threat well there have
6:42 pm
been in recent months and in recent years there have been a lot of investigations that have definitively traced invasions back to the chinese mainland now that's not to say the chinese government is to say so instead of computers in china were involved in in organizing these attacks what's difficult to say is how. directly connected those attacks all are to the chinese government whether instead they're economic espionage and it's just very hard to know and so people often make assumptions it's difficult to say for certain without ok but i guess you could say that journalists probably aren't supposed to make assumptions like that when they write their headlines now really quickly united spoke about this before we talked about anonymous they talked about little segue does this prove that the government is using its resources to go after anonymous a lot of things that the cyber security experts said are un serious instead of
6:43 pm
catching major five year long cyber attacks like this i think this is a more important penetration to avoid from the government's perspective and if there are resources that are being spent elsewhere that could be better put in place here those are resources that should really be reallocated i'm not a mess by comparison are simply less serious threats and i guess that's why maybe the government is trying to set up a bunch of you hackers at def con right now we're going to talk about that tomorrow thanks so much for joining us tonight thank you. now just ahead fake outrage after the president offers a proclamation for ramadan and the news team articles on the war and happy hour his company is accused of hacking the u.k. but now we learn that news corp apparently all of its own drone plus m.s.m. we see is lawrence o'donnell sacked from the straight well it's not.
6:44 pm
you know something if you see a story and it seems. you think you understand it and then you do something else here's the part of it and realize that everything you. disagree. and yet. they are.
6:45 pm
let's not forget that we've been apart right. i think. one well. we never got that they're going to say get ready for freedom.
6:46 pm
out of time for tonight's tool time award and tonight it goes to the morning crew at cox and friends say ramadan began this past monday if you're not familiar with about the islamic holy month of fasting for the white house issued a statement on the holiday from president obama obama i'm part of it right times like this remind us of the lesson of all great faiths including islam that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us and the statement went on to say that the president in the first lady we're looking forward to again hosting and it's our dinner at the white house but obama's statement seems to rub the hosts of fox and friends the wrong way think about and some people said that they have might have an issue with the fact that he didn't issue a proclamation for easter so some people are saying is this an outreach to the muslim world and why isn't there an outreach to the christian world has this. so gretchen wonders out loud or excuse me i mean other people are supposedly wondering
6:47 pm
why obama hasn't reached out to the christian world you're kidding me right you think the president of the united states needs to work on outreach to the christian world over seventy five percent of the u.s. population is christian obama is a christian he's a church goer the white house has a massive christmas tree on its lawn during christmas every single year they do an easter egg roll to celebrate easter obama regularly quotes scripture and references his faith in political speeches so let's not sitting here and act as if the christian population is somehow being neglected by our president and just when you think about conversation can't get any more questions co-host steve doocy decides to jump into the mix. yeah of course the white house historically does have a white house easter egg roll but they didn't issue an official proclamation like they did for ramadan just now there's the president with the easter bunny screenwriter i think he did. briefly in his we can address that weekend of easter in passing but still nothing big christian it is christianity's holiest
6:48 pm
and the secret likely to the coming as the obama white house power got to issue an easter proclamation we get it now of course they don't mention the easter prayer breakfast or the fact that obama attended church on easter sunday they wonder why obama's being called out over this easter proclamation when george w. george h.w. bush and ronald reagan none of them ever to shoot a proclamation either so why all the outrage towards just this president fox and friends be implying that obama is a secret muslim that he's helping lead a war on easter for the kind of looks that way i just wish they would just come out and say it rather than finding fifty different ways to insinuate it and for the record fox and friends it was george w. bush who started the tradition of if our dinners at the white house hosting eight of them during his presidency but i bet you guys didn't think about the slap in the face of the christian population and their stupid banter about ramadan and again questioning president obama's christianity are giving our total time of war to the
6:49 pm
fox and friends morning. ok guys it's time for happy hour this evening and joining me tonight is r t correspondent lauren lyster and mike riggs associate editor at reason magazine and reason dot com ok guys so yesterday on the show we played a clip with matt damon with a reason reporter talking about teachers and how much you love your. and we spoke about that yesterday lawrence o'donnell that decided to do with thing about it on his show last night and you know i think it's totally fine if you have your opinions on of course the teacher unions and where you stand but then he made a direct attack about reason where the reporter worked on the right wing organization and then went on to say this. is never once as republican world said
6:50 pm
hey maybe we should look into how police officers are carrying out their solemn public responsibility to serve and protect. you know right wing website in america is investigating or will investigate how well police officers do their jobs. lawrence. ok so like i said i fully believe that he has the right to say whatever he wants about that interview between my team and between the reporter everyone should you should have an opinion on that if you have some point but then if you're going to go ahead and criticize an organization with your facts straight you were a good reason and was never talked about. that's funny because before i came here i was weeping uncontrollably because for the last week and a half i've been covering the story of a homeless man who was beat into a coma by police in fortune california it's sort of like what reason does really well actually writing about police i would point out though it's not just reason that does this josh barro natural view has written about the unchecked powers of
6:51 pm
police groups even has a whole wing of their giant neo conservative you know i think a dedicated to over criminalization i was gay i think it's doesn't reflect just ignorance of what we do and he dedicated entire segment to our magazine and the t.v. site it to i think it reflects ignorance of like what a lot of people on the right are actually doing at the same time i do think just by devil's advocate a bigger picture when you look at the issues that have gotten a lot of publicity and i don't think it was right for him to kind of misappropriate anything it was directed at reason for that because obviously you guys do great work on that but he was i don't talking about the bigger picture in the republican establishment and the republican. when he was talking about you you have seen a very heightened campaign about public school unions you have not seen the same kind of p.r. efforts behind any kind you have here messalina surgeon lisa reality so i do think that it actually is a really fair point and a good point to be making i think is a fair point i don't think he made it well and also i thought you had at least a chance to you know. governor christie in new jersey is fighting with police
6:52 pm
unions and has been over a year for their retirement packages and when rodney king the police should be rodney king were pardoned in a federal trial george h.w. bush himself gave an announcement and he said it was appalling that they got away with a lot more that does need to be done about the great the kind of the let's move on to our next story this is another thing that's causing everyone to go crazy so apparently there has been this rhetoric that's used towards the tea party when it came to the den to go she asians even joe biden apparently called them terrorists and said they were acting like terrorists when it comes to this and so of course the right wing has gone crazy and pale and had a particularly interesting response. if we were really domestic terrorists should president obama would be want to power over me i mean he didn't have a problem a ballot around with bill ayers back in the day when he kicked off his political career in apartment and then you know shaking hands with chavez and saying he
6:53 pm
doesn't need any preconditions with media you know dictators or wanting to read us miranda rights to. the suspected foreign terrorists you know if we were all domestic terrorists i think president obama would have a problem with us. i just have so many problems with every word that comes to her mouth like get over the bill ayres thing i can handle any more of that but also it's kind of funny because sarah palin is one of the people who came under so much attack after the shooting in arizona right we were talking about violent rhetoric coming from the right which you just you can't blame crazy people and actions that they do on reddit. and yet now you have the right wing being very hypocritical and just saying i cannot believe it be used the word terrorist enterprise it applied it to us and therapy late in particular especially because the tea party's been calling obama a fascist at every one of their rallies over the last five years so i do think there i think there's something consistent in the response to what happened in arizona and to dis the idea of the consistency there is that conservatives will
6:54 pm
they get painted as terrorists i mean conservatives are painted as inspiring terrorism in arizona you know the ring accuser when you read it before it was like a living room i met her i mean i mean to that somebody who may have inspired terrorism and so on i mean you go areas a little bit still or are we to terrorise the lovers because we actually believe in freedom of religion or don't think that every single muslim that lives in america is evil and wants to blow us all up there are nuances shades of gray i totally agree with you i do think that the two consistencies here though are that you know a lot of liberals think that if you're not i mean they now think that conservatives are actively committing terrorism in the crisis and six months ago they thought the conservatives were inspiring terrorists to you know that's what i can see here you go into the knowing any you know i take your example anyone else they want to have that because he does not think that they're acting like terrorists right now just because a couple people use than you know you mentioned by name there is very likely that
6:55 pm
he already had the entire economy hostage absolutely let's move on. you know it's been a while since we've talked about rupert murdoch and not all of news corp thing but this is a really interesting little bit of information to me because we talk about drones and our use of drones all the time in our shadow wars it turns out that news corp actually has their own drone that they used to supposedly fly over with you know what they call them. disaster areas when you know if there's a fire or there's a flood should newsgroup be able to happen throne is not weird is not up for debate someone's it is anyway ok even my can be allowed in the f.a.a. is examining i think there are some kind of i don't know what the name was for the kind of license that he could have possibly gotten but if he did get this special you know experimental license to have this drone that just really does prove that rupert murdoch has been the most powerful man in media let me just say one thing raul you know me i like the drones personally i like the surveillance i think it's
6:56 pm
all fantastic more videotape you have out there and more evidence you have to once again i'm not at all it's like you're going to use this is that it's a sort of counterintuitive argument right that the more surveillance we have the better off we are but the truth is if you have more surveillance and it's public or it gets published frequently i mean there you are you know get out there if you were high when we have a plan we have one more story to move on to what really quickly this is what rupert murdoch would say if anyone asked him if he knew he had a drone. you know. we just kind of are going to make fun of him ok so here is a story that got everybody crazy and everybody believed the other day take a look. a new study claims your web browser is a sign of your intelligence level a new study claims internet explorer users scored lower than average on their i.q. test this is compared to crawl firefox and so far users who tested a bit above average. i guess or third of the whole story was a hoax and
6:57 pm
a lot of news organizations fall for it but the funny thing is it's like it's really easy to fall for because who uses the internet explorer anymore. we worry to me yesterday i was like yeah i know internet explorer that doesn't surprise me it always crashes of course everybody will write you a nobody uses it i mean well but i do so i'm curious as to who does i mean right because this guy was like he had to track it and then when they interviewed me is like i'm just so pissed off the people use internet explorer so it's like who who is this person i know i mix i'm curious who actually planted this story or was behind it because they did a good smear campaign and at its core i intended to remind everybody that they still exist today without ever looking at any letters another reminder one point people were terrified of in the explorer because microsoft computers came with it and they were worried about the dominance of that as a source and platform how the world you know are you know things are joining me tonight that's a good night so thanks for tuning in making back tomorrow david house to be back on the show discuss the latest with his lawsuit against the department of homeland
6:58 pm
