military mechanisms if you don't work on supreme justice or accountability. i have every right to know what my government should do if you want to know why i pay taxes. i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so for like sleep you think you understand it and then a glimpse something else you hear sees some other part of it and realize that everything is ok and you don't know i'm trying hard because the big picture. says. let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right.

all right it's time for you said it i read it or take time to respond to my brilliance engaging viewer comments from facebook twitter and you tube because when you've got something to say i listen and first i'd like to address a happy hour segment that aired before i went on vacation or i introduced and commented on a story about a woman coming off her husband's peanuts and my reaction which was in jest offended some of my viewers who felt that i made light of the very serious issue so please let me take this time to address some of the criticism that we've heard so far and a lot of you out there were upset because you felt like i was laughing at the issue and then encouraged violence that's simply not true i clearly stated on air that i do not control or condone it that type of violence and if i offended you by not acting serious enough and i apologize but do not put words in my mouth and some of you took a more simplistic approach and said that my reaction to the story was
10:33 pm
a clear indication that i hate that that's just ridiculous i don't really know how to be more clear on the matter i alone because you do not hate men in fact i really like them and finally some of you have even suggested that because of my reaction to the story i deserve to have violence inflicted upon me some viewer suggested that i have my restaurant that i'd be raped if you got a problem with something i said the knots five of please don't pretend to take an issue with my statements which you thought encourage violence and then turn around and wish the same on me that my friends as a little thing i call hypocrisy let's move on to the next comment and reference to my interview with jane of the young turks on the debt ceiling arts at lemieux's eighty seven set on caving as a pattern with democrats it's obvious most of washington cater to the rich it's a big club and you ain't in it george carlin you know i really just feel like george carlin nails it on the head there and the longer i live in washington d.c. the more to. that i realize it the fact is that caving to the wealthy the holy

bipartisan affair yes the republicans might be a little worse at it but you can't depend on either party system is corrupted by money that both parties are simply beholden to and not the american people and what can be more indicative of this reality and the mad rush to create super lobbyists this way that's well congress members are going to put on the recently formed debt super committee who cares what the american people want or need the power is in the hands of those with the money to buy influence plain and simple and lastly i want to respond to a viewer who has a guest suggestion for a happy hour segment blue-green eleven thirty eight but as you do i'd really like to see the alone show invites even cold air to be on the happy hour after interviewing him about his super pac his quick wit would be perfect for happy hour and chicks dig him so let me just take this moment to extend a permanent invitation to even call bare his quick wit and good looks are welcome on the show anytime and that's it my rantings that i am i have more for you next week. and the fight to make the way the government uses the patriot act public has
10:35 pm
been dealt yet another blow we spoke about earlier on the show about the secret government interpretation of the patriot act it was revealed by senator wyden it leaving the american people out in the dark about their government actions once again a joint venture of the cato institute explained the issue and an earlier interview on our program. it means that you know the statute may say one thing but you have no idea how in practice the courts decided that should be interpreted how what's the decided if i really means and you know we have senators being asked to vote on something and even they and certainly the general public don't we don't really understand well sadly that's exactly what happened senators voted on the bill and they passed it but ron wyden and mark udall both asked congress to reconsider because the provisions of the bill are so secretive that no details have been released however after the requests to reconsider both the attorney general and director of national intelligence have decided to keep it all
10:36 pm
a secret and that includes it one of the most contentious elements called the business record provision which allows organizations like the f.b.i. to obtain personal records and other tangible things whatever that means now sadly after dedicating months to warning the public about the secretive patriot act it's like we're going to remain out of the loop when it comes to knowing how the government is going to spy on us and how they try to justify it. all vanity fair dropped quite bombshell today after getting an exclusive interview with a cyber security expert from mcafee exposing what could be the largest concerted cyber attack in history now it turns out that for the last five years operation a shady hat as they're calling it has infiltrated computer systems of over seventy two different organizations in fourteen different countries and that includes government agencies in the u.s. the u.k. japan taiwan south korea germany singapore and other nations and the operation is also targeted the international olympic committee the united nations the world anti-doping agency and the association of southeast asian nations and those names
10:37 pm
mcafee you won't have any more mcafee excuse me won't give out any more of the details but says the nonprofits the u.s. media organization global corporations almost every single category imaginable but they've all been hit most heavily targeted category was defense contractors thirteen of them in all according to the report the attackers have lifted it government secrets even archives legal contracts and design schematics it's a sure sign that hacking is becoming a global problem so who could be behind it and we really just find this out here discuss this with me is joshua green speck so i was scared a fellow at the center for democracy and technology and i see you again thanks for coming on thank you so much for having me is this as big of a deal as everyone's making it seem it is this really the largest cyber attack coming from one organization or a group or even one individual in history i think what's interesting about this particular attack is that it connects a bunch of disparate attacks on individual organizations to one command and control
10:38 pm
center so what's being done here is sort of taking a bunch of attacks that were occurring this times noticed by the organizations they were part of and saying no this was a collective effort by one group of organization controlling one particular server now. to us exactly it is they're calling it operation shady rat or remote access tools how does this all work they get on to somebody computer because they might have a virus on it and that's that they have access right so what this is this is an example of a kind of threat that people call advanced persistent threats and the way that these threats work is that individuals are specifically targeted because of their association with an organization of interest whether that organization is a defense contractor or government agency someone and so on those individuals are often emails or fish sent individual crafted e-mails that are
10:39 pm
intended to make those particular individuals interested in going to click that link leads them to a computer that infect their computer with malicious software that opens up a backdoor in their computer and a remote access to all the rat in operation shady rat is used by a remote operator to come in and manipulate their machine to exfiltrate gedo or to perform some other desired action now and apparently there could be some important data writings or e-mail archives there could be government secrets because if you look at everybody that was attacked here there are government agencies defense contractors you have also various nonprofits corporations even media organizations that just tell you that nobody's safe anymore these days but i think it's it's what's particularly difficult on the face of this report is to know what got taken and in fact sometimes even organizations that get hit by this kind of attack don't know what was taken and so there's the possibility that a great deal of sensitive information was lost there's also the possibility that i
10:40 pm
think was lost it's very difficult to know without doing a more thorough analysis of the networks that were penetrated themselves is that why nobody found out about it for so long i mean for five years and that's just what they think they think that it could have been going on for longer and apparently they didn't even discover this until two thousand and nine how did nobody know that it seems. crazy to me or or does the government know and they are just hiding it because they don't want to get embarrassed right so actually what what seems to have happened is that these organizations at various times many of them actually discovered the threat or inadvertently in researching formatting their computers cured the threat but what was not realized was that the threat had a common origin if there was one single place from which all of these attacks emanated so individual organizations might have realized hey i got penetrated or they simply might have patched their latest security software and solved the problem but the concerted attack was not recognized until recently i saw lots talk
10:41 pm
about the fact that it may have all come from one place because of course. mcafee cyber security expert said it's our policy we do not say who we think might get involved but they do think that it probably is a country or a nation state because they're saying that you can't get any economic gain this is all really interesting information that might be interesting to a nation state but immediately we've seen the media and other security experts all point the finger at china and say it's them and i've seen a million headlines today that all of china in you know into the headline even though they haven't been directly reference right i think i think that a lot of the targets of interest are targets that would interest a nation like china they might also in first other nations i think that additional investigation would be required to say definitively this is china or this is a what do you think about the fact that everybody immediately jumps on china as the threat well there have been in recent months and in recent years there have been
10:42 pm
a lot of investigations that have definitively traced invasions back to the chinese mainland now that's not to say the chinese government is to say so one set of computers in china were involved in in organizing these attacks what's difficult to say is how. directly connected those attacks are to the chinese government whether instead they're in the house or worse and it's just very hard to know and so people often make assumptions it's difficult to say for certain without a great but i guess you could say that journalists probably aren't supposed to make assumptions like that when they write their headlines now really quickly united spoke about this before we talked about anonymous we talked about lulz sec does this prove that the government is using its resources to go after anonymous a lot of things that the cyber security expert said were un serious instead of catching
10:43 pm
major five year long cyber attacks like this i think this is a more important penetration to avoid from the government perspective and if there are resources that are being spent elsewhere that could be better put in place here those are resources that should really be reallocated anonymous by comparison are simply less serious threats and i guess that's why maybe the government is trying to set up a bunch of new hackers. right now right it's like what about tomorrow thanks so much for joining us tonight thank you. now just ahead fake outrage after the president offers a proclamation for ramadan continues to marshal time of war and happy hour his company is accused of hacking the u.k. but now we learn that news corp apparently drone plus that my family feels lawrence o'donnell gets his facts wrong and straight and well it's not. you know sometimes you see a story and see so. you think you understand it and then you know here's the part
10:45 pm
10:46 pm
how to stop at night school time award and tonight it goes to the morning crew at fox and friends say ramadan began this past monday if not familiar with the battlefield lama holy month of fasting for the white house issued a statement on the holiday from president obama obama and part of a threat times like this remind us of the lesson of all great faiths including islam that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us and the statement went on to say that the president in the first lady we're looking forward to again hosting a part dinner at the white house but obama's statements seem cruel rod the hopes of absent friends the wrong way take a look at some people said that they have might have an issue with the fact that he didn't issue a proclamation for easter so some people are saying is this an outreach to the muslim world and why isn't there an outreach to the christian world this. so gretchen wonders out loud or excuse me i mean other people are supposedly wondering why obama hasn't reached out to the christian world you're kidding me right you
10:47 pm
think the president of the united states needs to work on outreach to the christian world over seventy five percent of the u.s. population is christian obama is a christian he's a church goer the white house has a massive christmas tree on its laundering christmas every single year they do an easter egg roll to celebrate easter obama regularly quotes scripture and references his faith in political speeches so let's not consider it act as if the christian population as somehow being neglected by our president and just when you think of a conversation can't get any more dumb questions co-host steve doocy decides to jump into the mix. yes of course the white house historically does have a white house easter egg roll but they didn't issue an official proclamation like they did for ramadan just now there's the president with the easter bunny ice cream right i think he did mention briefly in his we can address that weekend of easter in passing but still nothing big. is christianity's holiest in the city and i think that coming yes the obama white house or got to issue an
10:48 pm
easter proclamation we get it now of course they don't mention the easter prayer practice or the fact that obama attended church on easter they wonder why obama's being called out over this easter proclamation when george w. george h.w. bush and ronald reagan none of them ever issued a proclamation either so why all the outrage towards just this president could oxon friends be implying that obama is a secret muslim that he's helping lead a war on easter with a final look that way i just wish that they would just come out and say it rather than finding fifty different ways to insinuate it and for the record fox and friends it was george w. bush who started the tradition that if our dinners at the white house hosting eight of them during his presidency but i bet you guys didn't think that was a slap in the face of the christian population of other stupid banter about ramadan and again questioning president obama's christianity or even our tool time of war to the fox and friends morning team.
10:49 pm
ok guys it's time for happy hour this evening and joining me tonight is artie correspondent lauren lyster and mike riggs associate editor at reason magazine and reason dot com ok guys so yesterday on the show we played a clip with matt damon with a reason reporter talking about teachers and how much you love. your job whether that means you should get fired and we spoke about that yesterday lawrence o'donnell that decided to do with thing about it on his show last night and you know i think it's totally fine if you have your opinions on of course the teacher unions and where you stand but then he made a direct attack about reason where the reporter worked call them a right wing organization and then went on to say this has never once as republican world said hey maybe we should look into how police officers are carrying out their
10:50 pm
solemn public responsibility to serve and protect. and no right wing web site in america is investigating or will ever investigate how well police officers do their jobs. oh lawrence. ok so like i said i fully believe that he has the right to say whatever he wants about that interview between my favorite between the reporter everyone should you should have an opinion on that issue at some point but then if you're going to go ahead and criticize organization it was not your facts straight you were at that reason he was never talked about. that's going to be because before i came here i was weeping uncontrollably because for the last week and a half i've been covering the story of the homeless man who was beat into a coma by police in fulton california it's sort of like what reason does really well actually writing about police i would point out though it's not just reason that does this josh barro natural view has written about the unchecked powers of police groups even has
10:51 pm
a whole wing of their giant neo conservative you know think dedicated to over criminalization i was gay i think it's doesn't reflect just ignorance of what we do and he dedicated entire segment to our magazine and he cite it but i think it reflects ignorance of like what a lot of people on the right are actually doing at the same time i didn't just apply devil's advocate bigger picture when you look at the issues that have gotten a lot of publicity i don't think it was right for him to kind of myth appropriate and he was directed at reason for that because obviously you guys do great work on that but he was like kind of talking about the bigger picture in the repub. an establishment and the republican platform and when you're talking about you have seen a very heightened campaign about public school unions you have not seen the same kind of p.r. efforts behind any kind you got here not all the surgeon at least reality so i do think that that actually is a really fair point and a good point to be making i think it's a fair point i don't think he made it well and so i thought that you had at least a chance to you know. governor christie in new jersey is fighting with police
10:52 pm
unions and has been over a year for their retirement packages and when rodney king's the police should be rodney king were pardoned in a federal trial george h.w. bush himself gave me notes from it and he said it was appalling that they got away with a lot more that does need to be done about the great the kind of the let's move on to our next story this is another thing that's causing everyone to go crazy so apparently there has been this rhetoric that's used towards the tea party when it came to the den to go she ations even joe biden apparently called them terrorists and said they were acting like terrorists when it comes to this and so of course the right wing has gone crazy and pale and had a particularly interesting response. if we were really domestic terrorists president obama would be want to pal around with me i mean he didn't have a problem rallied around with bill ayers back in the day when he kicked off his political career in bill ayers apartment and then you know shaken hands with chavez and so he doesn't need any preconditions with media dictators or wanting to read us
10:53 pm
miranda rights to. the suspected foreign terrorists you know we're all domestic terrorists i think president obama would have a problem with us. i just have so many problems with every word out of her mouth like get over the bill ayers thing for ok i think i can handle any more of that but also it's kind of funny because sarah palin is one of the people who came under so much attack after the shooting in arizona right we were talking about violent rhetoric coming from the right which you just you can't blame crazy you know people are not. that they do on rhetoric and yet now you have the right wing being very hypocritical and just saying i cannot believe that they used the word terrorist enterprise it applied it to us and therapy late in particular especially because the tea party's been calling obama a fascist at every one of their rallies that would last five years so i do think there i think there's something consistent in the response to what happened in arizona and to dis the idea of the consistency there is that concern is it will
10:54 pm
they get painted as terrorists i mean conservatives are painted as inspiring terrorism in arizona and now they're being accused of a new regular well like a liberal i've never i mean to that somebody who may have inspired terrorism and said i'm going to go everyone's a little bit silly are we to terrorism lovers because we actually believe in freedom of religion or don't think that every single muslim that lives in america is evil and wants to blow us all up there are nuances or shades of gray i totally agree with you i do think that the two consistencies here though are that you know a lot of liberals think that if you're not i mean they now think that conservatives are actively committing terrorism in the debt crisis and six months ago they thought the conservatives were inspiring terrorists you know that's what i don't see that i'm sure you can go into the awning and you know i take your example i don't know if they are going to tell him that he does not think that they're acting like terrorists right now just because a couple people use that and now you mention so have i and there is very much for example you already have entire economy hostage absolutely let's move on.
10:55 pm
so you know it's been a while since we've talked about rupert murdoch and that whole news corp thing but this is a really interesting little bit of information to me because we talk about drones and our use of drones all the time in our shadow wars it turns out that news corp actually has their own drone that they used to supposedly fly over with you know what they call them. disaster areas where you know if there's a fire or there's a flood should news corp be or have been thrown in europe is not up for debate someone's these anyway i can't even i can be allergic to how he was and the f.a.a. is examining i think there are some kind of i don't know what the name was for the kind of license he could have possibly gotten but if he did get this special you know experimental license to have this drone that just really does prove that rupert murdoch has been the most powerful man in media let me just say one thing raul hear me i like the drones personally i like the surveillance i think it's all fantastic more videotape you have out there the more evidence you have to look at
10:56 pm
i'm not at all it's like a. sort of counterintuitive argument right that the more surveillance we have the better off we are but the truth is if you have more surveillance and it's public or it gets published frequently i mean there you are you know get out there you retire we have when we have one more story to move on to really quickly this is what rupert murdoch would say if anyone asked him if he knew he had a drone. you know. we just can't help ourselves make light of it ok so here is a story that got everybody crazy and everybody believed the other day take a look. a new study claims your web browser is a sign of your intelligence level and you study claims internet explorer users scored lower than average on their i.q. tests this is compared to chrome firefox and so far users who tested a bit above average. again so it turned out the whole story was a hoax and a lot of news organizations were but the funny thing ended it's really easy to fall
10:57 pm
for because who uses the internet explorer anymore and we worry to me yesterday i was like yeah i know internet explorer that doesn't surprise me it always crouches of course everybody will write you a nobody uses it i mean well but i do use time i'm curious as to who does i mean right because this guy was like he had to retract it and then when they interviewed me is like i'm just so pissed off the people use internet explorer so it's like who who is personally i know i'm excited and curious who actually planted this story or was behind it because they did a good smear campaign i got it or i answered it to remind everybody that they still exist or they would have. another reminder there are one point people were terrified of an explorer because microsoft computers came with it and they're worried about the dominance of that as a source and platform how the world yes very very things are joining me tonight that's a good night so thanks for tuning in making that some our own david house to be back on the show discuss the latest with his lawsuit against the department of homeland security and also to talk about how death on is attracting the sort of
10:58 pm
