into that only military mechanism if you don't work on supreme justice or accountability. i have every right to know what my government should do it want to know why i pay taxes. but i would characterize obama as a charismatic version of american exceptionalism. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so sorely sleep you think you understand it and then a glimpse something else you hear or see some other part of it and realize that everything is all you don't know i'm sorry welcome to the big picture. see.
6:31 pm
let's not forget that we had an apartheid regime right here in the us. i think iraq is needed and wanted well. whatever government says they're going to keep him safe get ready because you're going to hear freedom. for for food for.
6:32 pm
every night tool time award tonight it goes to fox news i know that we've been picking out a pair of ballots network a lot this week but they provide so much bother we just have to run with it so i'm going to say something that's not really all that shocking here ochs news doesn't like president obama we all know that but it turns out it's not just because of obama's politics that's not what they were problem with they're also not too stoked that he's black but you present some evidence to back up his claim the last night the president held a fiftieth birthday party at the white house the party was paid for by the first family not by you don't worry and they invited some friends and family over for a cookout seems innocent enough but let's take a look at the headline on the fox news website obama is the hip hop barbecue didn't
6:33 pm
create jobs and the article had of course pictures of obama charles barkley chris rock and jeezy oh man i just have so many questions for this one first starters are barbecue supposed to create jobs and what the hell is a hip hop barbecue anyway jay z. is the only hip hop artist on this list or at the event and i'm guessing that on fox news land to black people attending a party automatically qualifies that as a event nevermind the other famous white people were there but they decided to only show the black people you know the really subtle over news and show how fox news covers birthdays differently we also dug up a clip her birthday greeting and they did for president bush not to be up front this was after bush left office but i think at that point take a look. happy birthday to george w. bush the forty third president of the united states turns this sixty four today as you birthday mr president. has made it so glorious gets a pleasant shout out an obama birthday is called a hip-hop event now i got to say that thank god he didn't invite rapper common to
6:34 pm
the barbecue thinking of the outrage earlier this year when common attended a poetry reading at the white house long them is a controversial rapper and poet loni rush she had lynne junior better known as common in the white house judgment on inviting someone who glorified cop killing during the morial week of all times you know the judgment of the lacking of clout indeed the if the president of the united states has a very special position alicia you cannot embrace someone who is saying that a black liberation army person is innocent now if you're still not convinced the parts news doesn't like black people let me show you my last week of documentation to prove the point fox news fox news is just being fox news i'm not saying that he doesn't like white people actually he has a problem he has this guy is i believe
6:35 pm
a racist mr obama if this side of your forty's and rediscover your irish is more important than a presidential visit to a community trying to figure out what just. i mean. mr obama shares the last one of africa's credits first time he's given that goes. right through the clips that we just played out on the hip hop barbecue adeline i think we paid a pretty strong convincing and compelling case that is trying to tell us something our president is black and that apparently is very very bad so that we're giving parts news tonight's truth and award for their ridiculously ariss hip hop barbecue headline. well we keep talking to average americans who are angry frustrated. with their government and today we actually have some new polls to show just how much that discontent has grown according to a new c.b.s. new york times poll eighty two percent of americans now disapprove of the way the
6:36 pm
congress is handling its drop that is the largest number on record since the times began taking a poll in one thousand nine hundred seventy and when asked if members of congress deserve reelection next year given what americans have seen seventy five percent said no to every poll that you obviously have to take with a grain of salt but when three quarters of the population doesn't want to reelect their representatives you'd think that would make politicians want to run out beg for their forgiveness but they're not doing that so should these threats were taken seriously or despite their discontent well americans always just return to the polls and vote those representatives right joining me is reason t.v. reporter michelle fields michelle thanks so much for being here tonight and thanks so much for having me on for we get into these polls what it says about americans discontent with their government right now i have to bring up your interview with matt damon for a reason t.v. because this is become a you tube sensation and the media has been talking about it it's really reignited
6:37 pm
the debate over teachers and well let's remind our audience what it looks like. there's an incentive to work hard and be a better actor because you want to have a job so why isn't it like that for a teacher it's not an incentive that's the thing so you take this m.b.a. thinking right that's the problem with c. right now is this intrinsically paternalistic view of problems that are much more complex than that i mean why else would you take it. and really long hours unless you really love to do. do you know that was going to be a smashing success and that lawrence o'donnell would then go on an entire tirade after that video no it didn't but i think it's amazing we've been able to generate this discourse and debate and people are talking about school choice and people are realizing there is a problem with tenure and that teachers should be rewarded for the value that they create and for taking on challenging assignments instead of just based on seniority you still have them to be going so it's exciting but also this has
6:38 pm
a celebrity in it too i mean do you think about says a lot about this culture because i mean this debate has existed for a long time it's been discussed in the media but do you think that it's really unfortunate that it takes somebody like matt damon to get people to start paying attention again wanting to talk about of again oh no i mean i think it's great that matt damon is passionate about this issue because this is an issue that now is reaching a broader audience so anything i think it's wonderful that he's talking about this one thing that we have another clip of matt damon where fairly he didn't show his best side. ok but i mean maybe. i would have to play because it was kind of funny at the end if you had david make up for the camera man about to make sure we talked about it but the thing that matt damon doesn't understand is if our cameraman was underperforming he would be fired whereas with teachers with tenure it's so difficult to fire them it's time consuming it's expensive and what happens
6:39 pm
is these teachers just end up being transferred to another school what's called the dance of the lemon or they refer to as the just moving the trash passing over the trash so i mean this is so unfortunate we are protecting bad teachers at the expense of our children and you know unfortunately i think that probably a lot of good teachers get stuck in the middle of that because right now we're seeing layoffs of teachers across the board in many states and there are a lot of people who deserve to be losing those jobs right now let's move on to these polls that i just mentioned right so eighty two percent of people disapprove of congress right now of course like i said you have to take every poll with a grain of salt can't assume that it represents every single american but that's a big number seventy five percent don't want to re-elect their representatives what does that tell you well actually i'm not surprised if anything i'm surprised that it took this long for there to be such a big just disapproval rate this always happens whenever there are fights between branches of government and when there's this bickering going on back and forth that's covering the media and i mean it's not surprising there was
6:40 pm
a poll that just came out that they asked americans what they thought of the debt ceiling debate and they used the words such as disgusting stupid to describe people who are upset the economy's been bad and people are without jobs and they want something new they want to be different do you think that it's a temporary feeling of a fleeting emotion you know you mentioned of course this always happens when there's a big ring when you see it on the media isn't some other type of motional swell that we're seeing people want real change and long lasting change no i do think that. this is something that's indicative of something larger i mean people are upset they're unhappy they say that republicans are the ones who got us into the recession and others believe that you know gold democrats are going to be just making this work so they're looking for something different now what do you think of the fact you like i mentioned there seventy five percent of these people said that they don't think they're like their representatives deserve to be reelected but will they actually act on that when it comes to voting when it comes to next
6:41 pm
november should they find new candidates are there enough new candidates or should they sit at home well we had a poll done out reason that showed that eighty percent of americans say that they'd be open to voting for a candidate from a third party so i mean i don't know really if there is a candidate out there about viable third party candidate but i would love to see there'd be more options rather than just the republicans and the democrats because people are unhappy with both of you when you say third party candidate are you talking about because let's say ron paul for example who's running for president he's not a third party candidate at the end of the day he starts to run on the republican ticket so as long as we still only have two parties and of course there are there's the green party there are a number of states that have other smaller parties but is it going to be too hard for anybody to break in for americans to find someone that is different and as i don't see carrie johnson going for the libertarian ticket i don't see. the tea party breaking away from the republican party so it's unfortunate but i mean i wish
6:42 pm
we had more choices we have choice all over i mean you go to the coffee shop you have choice everywhere but when it comes to our government we only have two options and she really terrible options so why is that i mean you could say the right part of the problem is the system that of course is expensive how many people can actually afford to run for office these days but we have not enough people to actually want to be politicians and career politician doesn't sound like my job and i think we just don't have that many quality candidates i mean people are just really they aren't excited about any candidates and so it's unfortunate i'm michelle and i thank you so much for join. yes and i think they're. all coming up next we have our fireside friday and then we end the work week with happy hour pushed allowed to sesame street muppets get married he probably and each trade baby has a meltdown after the stock market crash i think is enough. you know sometimes you see a story and it seems so sweet you think you understand it and then
6:43 pm
a glimpse something else hears you some of the part of it and realize that everything you thought you knew you don't know i'm charge of the big picture. of. the world we are the world. and yet all. first.
6:44 pm
let's not forget that we've had enough hard hard work. i think. either one well. we haven't got the shows they're going to be safe get ready because the freedom. to tonight's biocide with your host of cops. this week we saw the
6:45 pm
debt debate that made an embarrassing spectacle of this country finally come to an at its hastur feet as the possibility of a default was described was averted and if anything it was corporations and the wealthy but what it was a loss for americans that append on a number of social programs including entitlements but guess who is already crying the loudest and their lifeline has been damaged and therefore panic and fear should set in for us all i guess i was kind of obvious if the defense department was supposedly a new defense department might i add under the new. the leadership of leon panetta yesterday in his first press conference as secretary of defense panetta warns of a four hundred billion dollars in defense cuts over ten years that are part of round one of the debt deal those are going to be tough enough now to fear around she was going to result in a stalemate in the congressional supercommittee that would in effect lead to six hundred billion cuts and more that trigger effect panetta went to far as calling that a dooms day making as
6:46 pm
a doomsday are you kidding me we already spend more than the rest of the world combined on our military the military budget is more than doubled and in fact increased seventy percent by some statistics since two thousand and one we're in trouble if you say have you seen the economy lately mr panetta have you seen the number of people that are unemployed that we now have the highest number of people on food stamps on record the fact that people can't put food on their tables or afford a roof over their heads is more disastrous to the well being of this country the loss of a few costly weapons programs that probably in the end won't even work with this new secretary of defense really doesn't feel that way he he said that instead of slashing defense the bipartisan panel should rely on tax increases and cuts to non-special mary spending like medicare and social security so once again it's the perfect example but in order to keep our military industrial complex going forever and forever all of that money that you've been putting into your social security your entire life sorry that's going to go it's granny or it's the aircraft carrier
6:47 pm
and granny just isn't this sexy it's another disgusting reminder of who and what matter to your politicians and probably another reminder that you can't believe anything that they hear you never before panetta was sworn in everybody was pointing to his credentials working at the congressional budget office as a sure sign that he was going to take on wasteful and bloated defense spending now obviously that's not going to happen and man he destroyed that myth in the very first press conference to he didn't even bother taking his time to let us all down easy as also not forget that this is supposed to be a democratic. administration and i connect but his words of the entire administration because he did so himself he in fact sends a message out to the defense department personnel declaring that kind of six hundred billion would be completely unacceptable to both him and the president that probably means that whatever message he sent the president had signed off on himself that's not what americans want this is not what this country needs to stay safe this is what defense contractors
6:48 pm
a lobby for and when to let you in on one last bit of detail about the absurdity of it as doomsday warnings you see in this debt deal republicans made sure to write into the initial four hundred billion in cuts doesn't come just from the fence but security as well that means holding security border enforcement foreign aid and veterans benefits so you tell me when four hundred billion is going to because there is not going to be coming from not from bloated and wasteful military spending projects which we detail constantly on the shelf you know the ones that take twenty years to complete the never even work you know it's going to be your troops that pay and then they're going to use that as a guilt meter to cry that defense cuts are so wrong just have to be that way this is a calculated choice by our country's leadership and if there ever was a doomsday mechanism for the lives of americans washington is it.
6:49 pm
all right again it's time for happy hour and we need this evening as r.t. correspondent laura lister and jay pretty fair are you guys thanks for joining me let's start with i'm sorry j.c. i totally just did not say where you work or do you what organization you have is going to get you know you're already going to be destroyed new media strategies thank you think. you're just like totally apologize for that. ok so let's start with something. obviously there's been a little hullabaloo over the fact that birth control may now be included you don't have to get a co-pay for it we've shown a couple clips on the on the show over the last week but sean hannity had to take on it as well last night think about. it again this is about women's health if you care about women's health isn't the whole house how loosely troll you in the cells can stop expecting other people to be responsible for every minute aspect of your
6:50 pm
life in this namely state that you want to create why should we pay for biafra because that will do some serious medical for the affordable care act i would have little choice but it's what i think is a medical problem versus forced to have sex. all right i'll tell you what my problem is with this because of course some people have we're just talking about there's some type of you know moral problem when it comes to birth control but sean hannity is just saying that that is a choice and vi agora is not a choice but that's a stupid because you're choosing to use birth control in sean hannity's mind because you want to have sex i don't understand why you would use it via agra unless you are choosing to have sex exactly he's talking about whatever it's called erectile dysfunction is a medical problem that then by al gore is the solution for he creates the problem of pregnancy which you should be able to get birth control for. you this is. the
6:51 pm
other one. the problem with hannity put it is that he was he was really clear right so it is like no no that there is less of the really of the really important part is that couples have a moral objection to using birth control because for any reason you cannot you should not force by war because it is against the constitution you are not forced by law people to pay into a system or pay for birth control just period that's that's just a lot but you know you should not be you should not be able to do that i just wonder though how many things are you know that people are forced to pay into that they might be borelli earth they might morally object to but those do. count because you're not a catholic right because your religion might not be big enough or something and i morally object to funding wars that we fight how come i don't have a lot of your taxpayer money is that i actually don't have a problem with your logic i have a problem with penny's logic which i think is a big take away from all that is are is that you can do it in self alexander you can make the show tonight so. you know what was not to be fair the minute he handed
6:52 pm
me in for the meeting yesterday sorry ok i totally agree better logic. let's move on to the next i don't care there are a lot of people that are morally objected to this is well well you know that of course new york now is legalized gay marriage and now it's changed or it has asked for a petition to allow bert and ernie from sesame street to be married to you in case you're not familiar with bernie let us remind you a little clip. what are you doing with those cookies and i am. just wondering first choice whether it was cookies that were literally. cookies while you're in your prayers. you know there are actually some really dirty clips in my home we were looking through it and said that the people created just to play up the burden or anything but whatever if you watch this these three different obvious bernie are gay i kind of think of the first i kind of think that it's a fun idea it's not like we were talking about ok i will never forgive me or so but
6:53 pm
first of all it's a roommate situation that they couldn't possibly film with a wall between the two beds otherwise you would have this repartee about eating coke even if you are i mean we hear it weird homoerotic i even write like i mean you know i mean. he's not the best example but i'm just saying on the show homoeroticism is fine why is this suddenly weird i mean but the main thing is that the good part of this is that when i say it's the fact that they just deny it you know they want to get it so in other words you're going to trivialize the lobbying for q two. men can't share around what people do in college all the time as have you ever been to a paternity test the holiday weekend for iranians are very home are you actually going to have a job they're eating late at night they're college students they're sharing a room i think they should come out and i don't think like college students one of them is nearly bald. like you never seen it was a lot of media family guy but i think the bigger issue here is why couldn't they pick a show that's not already politically contentious it's on p.b.s.
6:54 pm
like this gives republicans i hate to say oh this is liberal government funded media and to rip you know sesame street off the air they make grandma i just think the fact that sesame street is governor excuse me politically contentious is. it would make it would make plenty of money on its own if it were a private eye was show it would do fine and that's been privatized and then make further let's not forget it's not all right also dr hating our children to raise not just the fact that paying for it indoctrinating your children supposedly with taxpayer money that. westboro baptist spoke about they're. not going to have a doctrine exactly we're talking about them a lot on the show too but let's just show you a very minor again but they like to go out. and say. right and that is that it. is more. and more of those you. are
6:55 pm
so these people are sick right i mean they often go they go and they protest. of soldiers because they think that the death of our soldiers a punishment for our acceptance of homosexuality in this country and now they're actually going to norway and they're going to protest at the funeral of the victims of the terrorist attack by anders breivik from last week which is it's just horrible but there is one maybe a light at the end of the tunnel of all this which people are saying is that they're hoping that maybe when the words are about to go to norway that actually get arrested because they don't have quite as much free speech when it comes to being allowed to picket the funerals yeah i know that that is probably is our lightning and i didn't think that you know when this was the first brush with terrorism in norway but they never you know realize that as a result of that they would get their first brush with like the crazy you are about to see we see all of you and i was hearing the governor and yes there's like five of them that was a general way how did they have this you know tour all over the country well i
6:56 pm
think that the lesson that i was draw from the westboro baptist church is that this is of course the most the most horrible speech right this is the thing that we really can't stand it we want to we want to create laws or whatever or just try to protect prevent but it's but it's never these things that are that are difficult to decide right it's always political speech that's the sort of the difficult thing to figure out whether or not it's ok for for certain people speak and others not to so what i would do what i would just say is like i love that i live in a country where we kind of just go it's really awful it's absolutely terrible but you know fine they'll do their thing and we don't have to worry about you know i don't have to worry because i'm totally with you there and you know i'm sorry if the laws are not relaxed in norway but maybe just got arrested i'd just be a little happy to call them right away and one of the wrong find it's wrong but a little bit happy ok this is a spoof everybody has favorite you trade baby had a reaction to the stock market last night. spots of stocks great. lines.
6:57 pm
just dropped four hundred points this is not happening you're born i. want to get back to what. i want to go there are always my favorite commercials and this was pretty good. the day we actually saw it and i got a child learn that language on bert and ernie because i'm going to be very upset that our government tax dollars have been spent on britney which uses child as it would be if you're spending so much time on each way to worry about the stock market of course getting a lot of cussing together is just so high stress and tense all the time yeah maybe he got some time back today stocks bonds back i fear for future. me too. some days some days not very good i got around. thanks for joining me this evening add it for you and thanks for tuning in and make sure you come back on monday so the baby is using older rich men to help pay off their college loans they were all
6:58 pm
