congress is handling its job that is the largest number on record since the times began taking a poll in one thousand nine hundred seventy and when asked if members of congress deserve reelection next year given what americans have seen seventy five percent said no so every poll that you obviously have to take with a grain of salt but when three quarters of the population doesn't want to reelect the representatives you'd think that would make politicians want to run out beg for their forgiveness but they're not doing that so should these threats be taken seriously or despite their discontent the americans always just return to the polls and vote those representatives right joining me is reason t.v. reporter michelle fields michelle thanks so much for being here thanks so much for having me off before we get into these polls what it says about americans discontent with their government right now i have to bring up your interview with matt damon for a reason t.v. because this is become a you tube sensation and the media has been talking about it it's really reignited

the debate over teachers and well let's remind the audience what it looks like. there's an incentive to work hard and be a better actor because you want to have a job so why isn't it like that for a teacher it's not an incentive that's so you take this m.b.a. . right that's the problem with it see right now is this intrinsically paternalistic you problems that are much more complex than that i mean why else would you take a salary and really long hours unless you really love to do. you know if i was going to be a smashing success and that lawrence o'donnell would then go on an entire tirade after that video no it didn't but i think it's amazing that we've been able to generate this discourse and debate and people are talking about school choice and people are realizing hey there is a problem with tenure and that teachers should be rewarded for the value that they create and for taking on challenging assignments instead of just based on seniority so it has been to be going so it's exciting but also this has

a celebrity in it too i mean do you think about says a lot about this culture because i mean this state the debate has existed for a long time it's been discussed in the media but do you think that it's really unfortunate that it takes somebody like matt damon to get people to start paying attention again wanting to talk about of again well no i mean i think it's great that matt damon is caution about this issue because this is an issue that now is reaching a broader audience so anything i think it's wonderful that he's talking about this well one thing that we have another clip of matt damon where nearly he didn't show his best side. ok but i mean maybe. we just had to play because it was kind of funny if you had to do that david make up to the camera man about the make up i am we talked about it but the thing that matt damon doesn't understand is if our camera man was underperforming he would be fired whereas with teachers with tenure it's so difficult to fire them it's time consuming it's expensive and what happens

is these teachers just end up being transferred to another school what's called the dance of the lemon or the referred to as the just moving the trash the trash so i mean this is so unfortunate we are protecting bad teachers that be expensive our children and you know unfortunately i think that probably a lot of good teachers get stuck in the middle of that because right now we're seeing layoffs of teachers across the board in many states there are a lot of people who cannot deserve to be losing those jobs right now let's move on to these polls that i just mentioned right so eighty two percent of people disapprove of congress and now of course like i said you have to take every poll with a grain of salt can't assume that it represents every single american but that's a big number seventy five percent don't want to reelect their representatives what does that tell you well actually i'm not surprised if anything i'm surprised that it took this long for there to be such a big just disapproval rate this always happens whenever there are fights between branches of government and when there's this bickering going on back and forth that's covering the media and i mean it's not surprising there is

a poll that just came out that they asked americans what they thought of the debt ceiling debate and they used words such as disgusting stupid to describe it is people are upset the economy's been bad and people are without jobs and they want something new they want something different but do you think that it's a temporary feeling of a fleeting emotion you know you mentioned of course as always happens when there's bickering when you see it on the media is in some other type of motional swell that we're seeing where people want real change and long lasting change no i do think that. this is something that's indicative of something larger i mean people are upset that they're unhappy they see that republicans are the ones who got us into the recession and others believe that you know democrats are going to be just making this work so they're looking for something different now what do you think of the fact you like i mentioned there seventy five percent of these people said that they don't think their like their representatives deserve to be reelected but will they actually act on that when it comes to voting when it comes to next

november should they find new candidates are there enough new candidates or are they sitting home well we had a poll done i reasoned that showed that eighty percent of americans say that they'd be open to voting for a candidate from third party so i mean i don't know really if there is a candidate out there about some viable third party candidate but i would love to see there'd be more options rather than just the republicans and the democrats because people are upset that they're unhappy with both of you now when you say a third party candidate are you talking about because let's say ron paul for example who's running for president he's not a third party candidate at the end of the day he still has to run on to the republican ticket so as long as we still only have two parties and of course there are there is the green party there are a number of states that have other smaller parties but is it going to be too hard for anybody to break in for americans to find someone that is different so young as i don't see very johnson and going for the libertarian ticket and i don't see. the party breaking away from the republican party so it's unfortunate but i mean i wish

we had more choice as we have choice all over i mean you go to the coffee shop you have choice everywhere but when it comes to our government we only have two options and two really terrible option why is that i mean you could say the right part of the problem is the system that of course is so expensive how many people can actually afford to run for office these days but we have not enough people to actually want to be politicians i mean a career politician doesn't sound like my dream job and i think we just don't have that many quality candidates i mean people are just really they aren't excited about any candidates and so it's unfortunate i wish i want to thank you so much for join. us tonight thank you i appreciate that. but coming up next we have our fireside friday and that we end the work week with happy hour nonlife pushed allowed to sesame street muppets get married in quality and each trade baby has a meltdown after the stock market crash that was not. good also gives you a story and it seems so sleep you think you understand it and then you glimpse

debt debate that made an embarrassing spectacle of this country finally come to a net catastrophe as the possibility of a default was described as a burden and if anything it was corporations and the wealthy that want it was a loss for americans it depends on a number of social programs including entitlements but guess who is already crying the loudest and their lifeline has been damaged and therefore panic and fear should set in for us all right i guess that was kind of obvious if that's department but supposedly a new defense department might i add under the new. leadership of leon panetta so yesterday in his first press conference as secretary of defense panetta warns of a four hundred billion dollars in defense cuts over ten years that are part of round one of the debt deal those are going to be tough enough now to fear that round two is going to result in a stalemate in the congressional supercommittee that would in effect lead to six hundred billion cuts and more be that trigger effect and i don't want to start calling that a dooms day mechanism doomsday are you kidding me if we already spend more than the

rest of the world combined on our military the military budget is more than doubled and in fact increased seventy percent by some statistics since two thousand and one i get burned terrible abuse it have you seen the economy lately mr panetta have you seen a number of people that are unemployed we now have the highest number of people on food stamps on record the fact that people can't put food on their tables or afford a roof over their heads is more disastrous to the well being of this country the loss of a few costly weapons programs that probably in the end won't even work with this new secretary of defense probably doesn't feel that late see he said that instead of slashing defense the bipartisan panel should rely on tax increases and cuts to non-discretionary spending like medicare and social security so once again it's the perfect example but in order to keep our military industrial complex going forever and forever all of that money that you've been putting into your social security your entire life sorry that's not a go it's granny or it's the aircraft carrier and granny just isn't

a sexy it's another disgusting reminder of who and what matters your politicians and probably another reminder that you can't believe anything that they hear even before panetta was sworn in everybody was pointing to his credentials working at the congressional budget office as a sure sign that he was going to take on wasteful and bloated defense spending now obviously that's not going to happen and man he destroyed that myth in the very first press conference to he didn't even bother taking his time to let us all down easy was also not forget that this is supposed to be a democratic ad. ministration and i connect but his words of the entire administration because he did so himself he in fact sends a message out to the defense department personnel declaring the kind of six hundred billion would be completely unacceptable to both him and the president so that probably means that whatever message he sent the president had signed off on himself that's not what americans want this is not what this country needs to say say this is what defense contractors

a lobby for and when to let you in on one last bit of detail about the absurdity and panetta doomsday warnings is the indus debt deal republicans made sure to write into the initial four hundred billion in cuts doesn't come just from defense of security as well that means homeland security border enforcement foreign aid and veterans benefits so you tell me when four hundred billion is going to be cuts corners not going to come from not from bloated and wasteful military spending projects which we detail constantly on this show you know the ones that take twenty years to complete the never even work you know it's going to be your troops that pay and then they're going to use that as a guilt meter to cry that defense cuts are so wrong and just have to be that way this is a calculated choice by our country's leadership and if there ever was a doomsday mechanism for the lives of americans washington is that.

minute aspect of your life in this nanny state that you want to create why should we pay for me and i am right because that will be some insurance for the affordable care i would have been all right here's what i think is a medical problem vs i have sex. i also i what my problem is with this because of course some people have we're just talking about there's some type of you know moral problem when it comes to birth control but sean hannity is just saying that that is a choice and by agra is not a choice but that's a stupid because you're choosing to use birth control in sean hannity's mind because you want to have sex i don't understand why you would use vi agora unless you are choosing to have sex exactly he's talking about whatever it's called erectile dysfunction is a medical problem that by al gore is the solution for he creates the problem of pregnancy which you should be able to get birth control for. i think i think i'm pretty does the author go about this was. the problem with hannity put it is that

he was he was really clear right so your view. is like the really of the really important part is that catholics have a moral objection to using birth control because for any reason you cannot you should not force by law because it is against the constitution you are not forced by law people to pay into a system that will pay for birth control just period that's that's just the law but you know you should not be you should not be able to do that i just wonder though how many things you know that people are forced to pay into that they might be morally or they might morally object to but those just don't count because you're not a catholic right because your religion might not be big enough or something and i'm worley i object to finding wars that we fight how come i don't have a lot of your taxpayer money is that actually going to problem with your logic i have a problem with handy logic which i think is a big take away from all those. are you saying to himself and hannity could you make the show tonight so you're not you know. where the many hannity even for

the evening and that's. ok i totally get it back and. let's move on to the next two items are there a lot of people who are morally objected to this as well we know that of course new york now is legalized gay marriage and now it's changed or it has asked for a petition to allow bert and ernie from sesame street to be married to you in case you're not familiar with bernie but it's my cute little clip. what are you doing with those cookies and. cookies and just wondering first or third if you cookies before going to sleep any. cookies while you're. you know there are actually some really dirty clips that i know we're live here later today that people created just to play up the burden or anything but whatever if you watch this mystery it's pretty obvious bernie are gay and i kind of think if . i kind of think that it's a fun idea it's not your own what are you talking about ok i'll never forget

a show that's not already politically contentious it's on p.b.s. like this gives republicans i hate to say oh this is liberal government funded media and to you know sesame street off the air they make but i'm not i just think a fact that sesame street is governor excuse me politically contentious is. he would make it would make plenty of money on its own if it were private eyes show he would do fine and that's just privatized and then make the now forget it is now all right not a sale sale doctrine eating our children to raise not just the fact that paying for it's indoctrinating their children supposedly with taxpayer money. westboro baptist nothing about them not speaking of indoctrination exactly we're talking about them a lot on the show too but let's just show you a very minor again of what they like to go out. and say. but as soon. as march. those.

are so these people are sick right i mean they often go they go and they protest. of soldiers because they think that the death of our soldiers a punishment for our acceptance of homosexuality in this country and now they're actually going to norway and they're going to protest at the funeral of the victims of the terrorist attack by anders breivik from last week which is this was horrible but there is one maybe a light at the end of the title of all this which people are saying is that they're hoping that maybe when the west are about to go to norway that actually get arrested because they don't have quite as much free speech when it comes to be being allowed to pick at the funerals yeah you know that is probably is our lining and i didn't think that you know when this was the first brush with terrorism in norway that they never you know realize that as a result of that they would get their first brush with like the crazy part about this you we see all over the ring the of them and yet there's like five of them that was how did they take to norway how did they have this you know tour all over

the country well i think the lesson that i was draw from the westboro baptist church is that this is of course the most the most horrible speech right this is the thing that we really can't stand it we want to we want to create laws or whatever to try to protect prevent but it's but it's never these things that are that are difficult to decide right it's always political speech that's the sort of the difficult thing to figure out whether or not it's ok for for certain people speak and others not to so what i would what i would just say is like i love that i live in a country where we kind of just go oh it's really awful it's absolutely terrible but you know fine they'll do their thing and we don't have to worry about you know i don't really think i'm totally with you there and you know i'm sorry if the laws are not as relaxed in norway but maybe the rest of it is a little happy golden the way to get out of the wrong find it's wrong with a little bit of happy ok this is a spoof but everybody is a very you trade baby had a reaction to the stock market. i sponsor stocks. just
