in standard and poor's has dropped america's ranking to a plus this comes after a last minute deal earlier this week narrowly risky of the country for default some spending cuts agreed by congress so one of the whole truth. and if it's not changed could plummet further in the coming years the obama administration says the analysis is. in the recovery auntie's we should all know who is in washington force . well it really is more than anything a huge a symbolic and unprecedented blow to the united states to its status as a safe investment basically what this credit rating lowering does that it is it really raises questions about the validity of the united states and the ability of the u.s. politically to get its financial house in order so to speak the record here for the american people for the u.s. government could be severe now while this only takes it down from a aaa to double a plus with
12:02 pm
a negative outlook threatening in fact that the rating could get lowered even more in the next two years what it does is it potentially is that is the message that the united states is a risky investment that could send interest rates going up for the federal government and because other borrowing costs are tied to that that means mortgage payments could go up mortgage interest rates go up car interest rates can go up and really the rest of the u.s. economy could be severely affected now one thing that we do have to keep in mind here is that the obama administration had pointed out that the s. and p. had made an error of about two trillion dollars in. projections in releasing that information now the s. and p. doesn't make these decisions based on any sort of special information they really it really is a political reaction based on facts that are available to just anyone and so the other thing we have to keep in mind here is that these same credit ratings agencies essentially allowed top ratings to continue in the united states at a time when. we were investing
12:03 pm
a lot of money in these mortgage securities that essentially ended upon lapsing and pulling down the u.s. economy with it so they don't really have all of that much credibility in the eyes of the world market still however we don't know what will happen come monday when the markets will open and if those interest rates do rise there could be a root ball at this very unstable economic time here in the united states with the passage of this debt deal the u.s. government's hands are essentially tied in terms of stimulating the economy in terms of any sort of new spending that could boost growth we saw g.d.p. growth stalled to almost a crawl in the second half of the year we saw on top of that the jobs report that came out on friday for the united states while it was somewhat positive but actually showed negative growth because it means that more people here in america have given up looking for work so politically there's really not that will in washington to do what's needed to stimulate growth and financially they simply do not have the tools in their possession in order to improve things here and so while
12:04 pm
these credit rating agencies may sometimes be accused by some financial experts of having missed the mark long ago these small tiny effects in terms of higher interest rates could really really cripple what's already seems to be a worsening recession here in the united states. come home america door to us as the rest of the world is now realizing that america is losing its financial who get money. the reality is our economy is in terrible shape and the government's actions are actually counterproductive as number of men nobel prize winning economists and other top economists is the focus now should not be on deficit should be on getting the economy moving in creating jobs unfortunate government is going in the opposite direction focusing on deficit now there's really choke the money supply even more is the lack of prosecution of wall street executives for a collapse in the economy showed
12:05 pm
a real spinelessness even more bad policy decisions the the regulation of wall street which was led by the guys who caused the problem who work now for obama actually was inadequate i think people see them mr action of our economy and recognize that the days of the u.s. edge of money on the economy are coming to an end. and renowned economist richard wolfe told us that many are waking up to the reality that the u.s. economy is crippled we've had twenty years of being told that a private enterprise economy is the royal road to success and prosperity forever then we had a crash of that system now we've had a recovery by a government that took care of the banks and insurance companies first and the short of us it would trickle down it's not trickling down that's what these unemployment numbers mean that's what the increasing foreclosure of people being thrown out of their homes means and so on the stock market is finally the
12:06 pm
investment community itself realizing that this system is broken and that there is nothing on the horizon to take it out and the anxiety that used to be among all the average people the vanishing middle class and all the people worried about government spending that anxiety is now spreading even to the top of the economy as they realize they've gone way too far and may have killed the goose that is laying the golden egg at least for them. john of the you know it is holder of u.s. debt has immediately reacted to the news of the downgrade saying washington needs to cure its debt addiction beijing also cool for a new stable reserve currency instead of the dollar it concerns are also rising a nation's third largest economy india where the finance minister called the situation grave auntie's reports now from new delhi asian markets are tumbling they were tumbling on friday obviously we don't know what's going to
12:07 pm
happen on monday in specific reaction to this news but many analysts many financial analysts here predicted this especially after the u.s. debt ceiling debate that took so long and in many ways is what people are saying led to these lower approval ratings they guess you could say so the markets have tumbled here people are losing confidence in the american economy obviously there are things that soaring there is think a lot since decisions not specifically being made when it comes to that two point four trillion dollars and cause a lot of people are wondering if it told the u.s. this along to come to a decision just to raise the debt ceiling how much longer could it take to actually figure out but typically where it occurred in asia has a very vested interest in this if you think about what these ratings actually means that means that the united states won't be able to repay a lot of their loans in asia actually hold three trillion dollars in the united states alone so people here are watching what's happening in the united states very closely. well the downgrade came too late to hit europe's stock markets which have
12:08 pm
already taken a hammering this week being battered by the eurozone and america's debt difficulties meanwhile the e.u. leaders criticized the u.s. rating agencies blaming them of double standard saying they will create a european one in response and dotty's daniel bushell has more now for us from brussels. downgraded the rating agencies to junk. polls the agency admitted a two trillion dollar miscalculation when deciding this downgrade they claim to have the world's best minds working for them hasn't really surprised people here because most know that's emerged as had unsustainable that for many years now well everyone apart from the rating agencies it seems and the day before firms collapsed in the credit crunch they still had aaa ratings on those companies now that made the agencies lose their reputation but people lost their whole savings and triggered the world recession that followed. the rules of furious about s.
12:09 pm
and p's double standards they held with the white house before all this decision they briefed them about it when it would take place what would happen and that's allowed the white house to prepare a smooth response to the media and even question the the agency's judgment none of the happened last week when the agencies graded the european union countries and their ratings now that suggests that the agencies are saying the very least and as a result the european union is creating its own agencies. for americans who will see themselves having to pay more more interest on their loans and having to pay more on that is bad really for everyone around the world who lend money to america because it raises the risk of not getting that money back. one small debt for a man one giant a black hole for a government coming your way next we're in new york to ask what's the difference between our debt and those of our leaders. much worse for government to be and
12:10 pm
why because we trust the government to do the right thing and they're doing absolutely the opposite of that do you trust yourself to do the right thing and live within your means i do dat so that i can pay it off. thirty one u.s. special forces personnel and seven afghan soldiers have been killed in a helicopter crash in the eastern province according to president karzai his office the incident marks the biggest single loss of life for american forces in the country well for more on this i'm now joined live from kabul by political analyst dr thanks very much indeed for joining us now president obama says that these deaths show the extraordinary cost of the war but at the same time the u.s. of course is talking about withdrawing the troops in the country and leaving it to a stable future does this realistic to you after this attack.
12:11 pm
of course the united states wants to reduce the number of its troops in afghanistan but i think the future will be dependent on that. reality on the ground in afghanistan i think the united states will not withdraw all the air forces by. fourteen from from afghanistan because it would be costly father your right to sit in for the international community and afford the government and a third of the people of afghanistan as well but of course. the united states and that you are me. pays war casualties in afghanistan particularly in this attack. which happened and lot of that province. afghanistan this is the first time you is army. losses. to one of its soldiers and special soldiers in afghanistan and it is the
12:12 pm
highest peak of american casualties in afghanistan but i think it will not effect. on the government of america to with draw all of its forces from afghanistan but they knew that there will be more in afghanistan in the war against the taliban and al qaeda because al qaeda and the taliban are getting are gaining ground in afghanistan and becoming stronger and stronger. day. as you say in july you're saying how strong the al qaeda and the taliban are getting as we know in july ahmed wali karzai the brother the afghan president was killed we're not too sure what the cause of this helicopter crash was but the taliban of course are claiming responsibility for it i mean this is an indication as you're saying that the taliban is gaining strength and you're saying that maybe the troops won't go by twenty fourteen does that mean that the afghan security
12:13 pm
services won't be ready to handle it. by twenty fourteen and they will need that backup from foreign forces. yes when the taliban announced the or start teaching for this. confrontation with american and nato soldiers in afghanistan the main point of. view was to target. the key. of the government on afghanistan in the taliban actually and the past three four months d.d. it india implemented this point of the saudis in afghanistan and they killed a number of afghan officials political and military officers. in afghanistan into the taliban. that they well. are off attacks against foreign troops and and after afghan troops because the taliban are gaining ground and they
12:14 pm
are they are becoming stronger and stronger in afghanistan just really just a quick sorry to interrupt but you are talking about the taliban gaining strength all day in afghanistan in kabul tell us what life is like there how it's changed over the past ten years and what is the overall sentiment of the older people there in terms of the results of the foreign occupation and indeed the strength of the taliban what is the feeling there just briefly. at this region has changed to money extent in afghanistan particularly in the big cities in afghanistan and. if we compare the situation to the taliban in afghanistan it is bitter now but. it is. a worsening situation is worsening in afghanistan because the taliban came in more strong and they can attack targets and everywhere in afghanistan in many parts of the country even in big cities which is more secure today in. areas.
12:15 pm
then remote areas in afghanistan because the taliban conducting suicide attacks and car bombing attacks such as attacks it is not possible for. foreign troops to confront it because of this the people of afghanistan pays debian all for war in. afghanistan which is going on same stew two thousand and one and. the taliban. to expand the activity in active military activities in many parts of the country because of there's the number of civilian casualties is increasing in afghanistan besides all afghan military forces and foreign troops. will have to leave it there thank you so much for your time there live from kabul political analyst dr hakim thank you very much indeed.
12:16 pm
a fresh wave of massive anti-government protests is due to sweep across israel this saturday night activists are hoping up to two hundred thousand will take part in the third weekend of rallies due to start in a couple of hours from now one tel aviv street has already been renamed by some as israeli tough here after the square where the egypt uprising took place and. has this report places today saturday tens of thousands of protesters will be taking to the streets here in tel aviv as well as in several other cities around the country where they'll be holding mass rallies against the government there hoping to top of the one hundred fifty thousand mason white who took to the streets last weekend this is the third saturday in a row that protests are being held they are united under the banner that the government has abandoned the people and the central message coming from organizes is that the people are taking the country back now the plan tonight is for demonstrators to march from the last time we have ali wait for the basic model we
12:17 pm
came to so. has been established the final destination is not far from here at the curia disclaims compound and there they'll be holding a mass rally because into a number of demands on the government of the civil speakers several popular singers also praise and in the last week there have been a number of smaller demonstrations that have been held for several hours earlier this week taxi drivers block told a number of main roads they were protesting against the high cost of result there was also another protest among teachers university professors and students and they were united under the banner of free education for all and another demonstration just yesterday we hundreds of parents with strollers took to the streets and they were protesting against the whys and cost and behind costs of having children families well the israeli prime minister. has been surprised by the massive support for these demonstrations and his government is still struggling terms of how to
12:18 pm
deal with them essentially what you can hear some people here in israel saying is that in the time the offer was so obsessed with gathering intelligence for the for telephone from the mediterranean that he missed the opportunity to see what was happening here under his eyes. to see television. well let's get some more insight on the situation from this. should say one of the tent number forty eight an organization campaigning for equal rights for israel's jewish and arab citizens thanks very much indeed for joining us sharon archies sharon we've seen calls for. over the last three weeks or so but your organization is raising political issues so what do you actually protesting about. the. nationality and the political situation of palestinians inside and outside of israel as applied to these protests we don't believe that there can be. socially
12:19 pm
change. addressing this issue of palestinians in israel it's a core issue and it has to do with economics with housing and with actually every government government decision or do you think that any reaction will be raised just to ask you do you think you'll get any reaction from the government over those issues you will campaigning about. we're hoping the but we're not sure because we're calling for major change we're calling for a policy change and this is something that i'm not sure the government is willing to talk about in this stage anyway some are calling a brutal vote in tel aviv where the campsite is they're actually calling it a march i think you're right at the moment they're calling it the israeli time here referring of course to the revolutionary square in egypt where of course their
12:20 pm
revolution started you think that's a fair comparison. and actually no i don't think this is their evolution. and i think that the fact that this protest chooses to focus only on social issues and to be only jewish and zionist but this is actually the. route towards really political change like. the one that happened in egypt for example and yes it is similar in that regard. young people are joining that but this people are coming out to the streets which is very blessed but this is not enough and i don't think the way this struggle is now. being managed it's going to really. cause serious change of course many issues being raised there as you say many social
12:21 pm
issues but getting back to your core school. the israeli arab relationship i'm one of the interesting thing is the israeli arab citizens are also of course experiencing housing shortages and facing eviction and all we actually seeing a van on the streets and campaigning for the cause. of very problematic situation because that first of all we do see. some arab citizens palestinians citizens of israel joining the protest but we are not seeing major change in the. palestinian population in israel i think because exactly this point that this. is not yet. a real political struggle that addresses the palestinian issues and outside of israel and just briefly a little bit about a short time ago of course a lot of pressure from the u.s. and a lot of countries in the settlements issue and other courses one of your main initiatives
12:22 pm
to do do you think there is any song whatsoever we see the israeli government backtracking on the settlement issue just briefly. what you talking about the government policy i didn't hear about the settlement issue obviously something which israel's been very much criticized the government can criticize every settlement policy of the moment obviously something that you are concerned about do you see any backtracking there toll from the government standing down any compromise at all. no not to. see any talks about settlements and not yet anyway the settlers joining this protest and. protesting for better housing they get a lot of budgets from the government and they are a part of the patient and that comforts that fixation of the land from palestinians but. i don't see any movement in the government in this direction ok and i don't. i
12:23 pm
think that the protest. just finished thank you. very obviously a bit of a communication problem that thank you very much and. there's going to be anticipated turn out to a massive turnout tonight some of the nights of course we'll be keeping. an eye on the developments there thank you very much indeed one of the founders of ten forty eight. campaigning for equal rights for israel's jewish and arab citizens joining us live in tel aviv and as i say we'll keep you up to date with the developments there. of course paula she's our correspondent she's in tel aviv and she's posting comments on our twitter account it's underscore calm on what's actually happening the so-called israeli ahead of those mass rallies which we're talking about which if you would. one of the latest tweets says the protesters pledge continue their rallies until prime minister netanyahu meets demands you can log on to underscore. the latest on this and other developing stories we're covering here on.
